I recently finished The Dorito Effect by Mark Schatzker. Let me preface this by saying that this book doesn't offer advice regarding weightloss nor is it solely about the obesity epidemic. But what it does do is discuss something that is near and dear to many of our hearts: flavor.
A podcast (SYSK) host I admire mentioned this book more than once, and I was intrigued. He promised that this book would discuss the impacts of mass farming on the flavors of our food. I found this concept interesting, but I never thought the book could lead me to thinking about my methods of weight loss.
The book is dense, especially so with data from peer-reviewed studies and anecdotes from experts in everything from spices to goats to obese rats. Honestly, if you can't stand scientific language or have nightmares from o-chemistry, this book might get to you. But it's also incredibly well written and narrative while being clearly anchored in scientific facts.
Basically, our healthy foods have rapidly been diluted to have less flavor than ever before, and manufactured foods have been pumped with both natural and artificial flavors to taste like things they aren't. This new reality of food doesn't combine well with our centuries upon centuries built "nutritional wisdom" we are born with. The book touches on why we binge certain foods, never reach satiety, and why even our healthy foods don't taste as good.
This book won't give you a road map to how to lose weight quickly or to build muscle, but it doesn't make those promises. What it did do for me is make me think about what I'm putting in my body. Not in the scare tactic ways that many fads can do, but one based in science and a conversation none of us are having. I'd love to have this discussion with any of you.

I listened to this on an audiobook from my local library. If you have a library card, you likely have access to thousands of books on Libby, Overdrive, or Hoopla. Use it!
