The Illusion of Weight Loss
There once was was a lonely unhappy fat woman who used to cry in the mirror whenever she saw herself. One day a magician found the fat ugly whale shaped female audience member and puts them inside a box, they are still panting from the stairs up to the stage. Then with a poof of smoke some dazzling lights and suspenseful music a scream is heard. "Gosh" the audience gasped but then the door is opened. What comes out is the most beautiful fitness model the audience has ever seen she runs from one side of the stage to the other. She catches herself in the mirror and cries this time not with sadness but with joy that she's finally beautiful and free to do what she likes. As she makes her way back to her seat the whole audience swoon over her wanting to be her friend, her partner even offering her a job. Her life is better because she is now thin.
Want this dream to be a reality? Well let me start by saying losing weight is nothing like that.
The Reality
The woman took years just to find the confidence to go outside. She went to many fake magicians who had fake boxes which didn't do the trick and even when she found the right magician the whole audience was holding her back from walking up. You will find this too when you start trying to lose weight.
There will be voices inside your head saying "your going to die anyway why prolong the pain longer", "your ugly anyway", "nobody likes you anyway", "it's not possible to be like that girl on Instagram" and for many reasons those voices will be right. There is no magic box. The journey takes pain and effort which is ultimately a pointless waist of time. Except we both know your reading this because your curious about what future, what body, what opportunities await you inside that box. You won't know unless you step inside.
But then there will be other voices online, your family and friends also leading you astray. "This one simple trick will help you lose weight" as you click only to find information about a product or worse a drug which is neither safe nor effective. Your friends and family may be misdiagnosing your unhappiness for something else. They mean well but ultimately they expect you to stay as the same person they know and if you change it threatens them in some way.
Inside the Box
So lets say you beat all the odds and got inside the box and are on your journey to losing weight. Well let me tell you this. The box doesn't work, you do.
So I used to follow loads of weight loss transformation instagrams expecting that the inspiration to lose weight and the knowledge gained from those pages would make me thin. It didn't. Your going to need to learn from scratch about how to eat right, how to exercise right, how much to exercise, what exercises to do, what foods to eat etc etc. The more research you do the more questions you'll have. I can tell you from my experience you won't find definitive answers to all those questions. You'll find conflicting answers and your whole body will have to become a lab experiment taking in chemicals in the form of food and burning them with the bunsen burner of exercise.
The box wasn't made for you. In fact it wasn't made for anyone in the audience. What I mean by that is someone who is 300lbs is going to need to just get moving and create a calorie deficit to lose weight. Whereas you being just a little bit overweight with areas of stubborn fat are going to need to work out how to gain some muscle too while also losing fat. Someone older will struggle with more intense exercises and someone younger will struggle with the confidence and maturity needed to lose weight healthily.
Now What?
Ok so you got in the box, you did the research and you found a way of losing weight which works for you. Great. But for you to get in shape your going to need to stay in there for as long as it takes. That could be 6 months, or a year, or two or 5 or 10. Your going to need to get out the box for Christmas, or to go to work or to socialise and those breaks from being inside the box on the journey might mean your starting from square 1 again. Other people are going to persuade you to get out "Your not doing this exercise right", "Your looking too thin" or worse yet they may not even notice you've been inside at all. Your going to feel immense pain, exhaustion like you've never felt before. You'll have days where your starvingly hungry but not sure if its ok for you to eat another calorie. There will be other days when you eat way too much and feel immense guilt about it. This is all of course assuming you stay in it and complete the journey.
Beautiful Butterfly
So your done. You spent the whole year or so in the box and endured all the pain and lack of motivation to come out thinner.
But do you look like a fitness model yet? The answer is probably not because you still need to learn how to do more exercises and lose more fat.
Do you look beautiful? Again the answer is probably dependent on how you see yourself and how your friends and family see you. If your self esteem is low you may never look good when you look in the mirror.
Will everyone swoon over you now? Again probably not if your confidence is low and you haven't worked on your social skills.
The magician will turn to you and say there is no escaping the box now. If you want to stay thinner you need it for the rest of your life. You feel doomed for eternity.
So what was the point?
As you step out the box you will realise the audience will have left and in reality nobody cares about being fit except you. You will think about the better times you had while inside the box. How you still tried to live a life outside the box. How that life is now easier because you kept getting inside the box. How you can climb an extra flight of stairs, how your feel you can achieve anything, how you can play with your son or daughter without getting tired, how you can make healthier cheaper food taste great now, how you can make gruelling physical exercise feel fun. Your life will be considerably brighter because you decided to confront those darker experiences and one day just maybe you'll learn how to be the beautiful person you always dreamed of being.
