How to ease into losing weight?

I’m 5’4” and around 170lbs, and I want to drop down to 130-135 over the next year or so. The main culprits are pandemic overeating/snacking and drinking pop and alcohol. I know I’m not good with drastic change - it works for some people, but never has for me. Now that I’ve got my procrastination habits in other areas down, I’m ready to focus on eating and exercise. The catch is - due to existing health issues (heart/lung, born with it) I have to be very careful with exercise and work up to it slowly.

I’m thinking of going in steps, like this:

Step 1: Walk everywhere. I’m already doing this as I live in an urban centre, and only take transit or Uber if there’s a compelling reason (like I have something super heavy or there’s a time constraint). For now, that’s all the exercise I’m doing. I speedwalk a little on each walk, unless it’s very icy.

Step 2: I am here. Cut out all caloried drinks. Especially pop and alcohol. Switch to sparkling water if I want to feel fancy, or tea. Thinking I will do this starting from tomorrow.

Step 3: Reduce snacking between meals. Only if very very hungry, not just bored.

Step 4: Cut down size of meals by 1/4ish. I tend to make big portions.

Step 5: Do some gentle yoga a few times a week.

Step 6: Experiment with ways to incorporate healthier foods into meals - more veggies, fewer grains.

I’m thinking if I add a step every few weeks, this might be doable. Is this realistic for the weight loss timeline of 40ish pounds over a year? Has anyone had success with the same method?
