Had my weight loss acknowledged in the most far fetched way today

So for a bit of context, I've steadily lost quite a bit of weight over the last three years or so (down ~115lbs). I've definitely noticed a lot of changes, but this is one outcome that I wasnt expecting...

I am not a very well travelled person, but over the last few months I have had the opportunity to fly 4-5 times. My first time going through TSA since I was a child ended with me being searched by the agent. I figured just bad luck for my first time. But in all my other flights, literally, and I mean, literally every time I go through security I have been getting searched. Obviously this is annoying, and kind of embarrassing to go through, but I haven't really thought much about why this could be happening, aside from me having some kind of implant that I don't know about.

Anyways, after going through security today, sure enough I lit up on two spots after going through the scanner. I was lucky to have a nice agent "handle" me, and so I made a comment to him on how I literally always have to be searched. And he asked me if I had lost a lot of weight. I was kind of surprised at first, but I told him yes I had, and he said that was why. Turns out all the extra skin that you get from huge weight loss triggers the machine because it thinks you have some kind of hidden body cavity, or something. Needless to say, although its annoying, I'll take that tradeoff. What an odd validation of my change!

Has anyone else experienced this?

TLDR: I literally always set off the scanner at airport security, and turns out the reason why is because of all the excess skin from losing a large amount of weight.

Day 1? Starting your weight loss journey on Thursday, 21 March 2019? Start here!

Today is your Day 1?

Welcome to r/Loseit!

So you aren’t sure of how to start? Don’t worry! “How do I get started?” is our most asked question. r/Loseit has helped our users lose over 1,000,000 recorded pounds and these are the steps that we’ve found most useful for getting started.

Why you’re overweight

Our bodies are amazing (yes, yours too!). In order to survive before supermarkets, we had to be able to store energy to get us through lean times, we store this energy as adipose fat tissue. If you put more energy into your body than it needs, it stores it, for (potential) later use. When you put in less than it needs, it uses the stored energy. The more energy you have stored, the more overweight you are. The trick is to get your body to use the stored energy, which can only be done if you give it less energy than it needs, consistently.

Before You Start

The very first step is calculating your calorie needs. You can do that HERE. This will give you an approximation of your calorie needs for the day. The next step is to figure how quickly you want to lose the fat. One pound of fat is equal to 3500 calories. So to lose 1 pound of fat per week you will need to consume 500 calories less than your TDEE (daily calorie needs from the link above). 750 calories less will result in 1.5 pounds and 1000 calories is an aggressive 2 pounds per week.

Tracking

Here is where it begins to resemble work. The most efficient way to lose the weight you desire is to track your calorie intake. This has gotten much simpler over the years and today it can be done right from your smartphone or computer. r/loseit recommends an app like MyFitnessPal, Loseit! (unaffiliated), or Cronometer. Create an account and be honest with it about your current stats, activities, and goals. This is your tracker and no one else needs to see it so don’t cheat the numbers. You’ll find large user created databases that make logging and tracking your food and drinks easy with just the tap of the screen or the push of a button. We also highly recommend the use of a digital kitchen scale for accuracy. Knowing how much of what you're eating is more important than what you're eating. Why? This may explain it.

Creating Your Deficit

How do you create a deficit? This is up to you. r/loseit has a few recommendations but ultimately that decision is yours. There is no perfect diet for everyone. There is a perfect diet for you and you can create it. You can eat less of exactly what you eat now. If you like pizza you can have pizza. Have 2 slices instead of 4. You can try lower calorie replacements for calorie dense foods. Some of the communities favorites are cauliflower rice, zucchini noodles, spaghetti squash in place of their more calorie rich cousins. If it appeals to you an entire dietary change like Keto, Paleo, Vegetarian.

The most important thing to remember is that this selection of foods works for you. Sustainability is the key to long term weight management success. If you hate what you’re eating you won’t stick to it.

Exercise

Is NOT mandatory. You can lose fat and create a deficit through diet alone. There is no requirement of exercise to lose weight.

It has it’s own benefits though. You will burn extra calories. Exercise is shown to be beneficial to mental health and creates an endorphin rush as well. It makes people feel awesome and has been linked to higher rates of long term success when physical activity is included in lifestyle changes.

Crawl, Walk, Run

It can seem like one needs to make a 180 degree course correction to find success. That isn’t necessarily true. Many of our users find that creating small initial changes that build a foundation allows them to progress forward in even, sustained, increments.

Acceptance

You will struggle. We have all struggled. This is natural. There is no tip or trick to get through this though. We encourage you to recognize why you are struggling and forgive yourself for whatever reason that may be. If you overindulged at your last meal that is ok. You can resolve to make the next meal better.

Do not let the pursuit of perfect get in the way of progress. We don’t need perfect. We just want better.

Additional resources

Now you’re ready to do this. Here are more details, that may help you refine your plan.

Eating While Mourning

[ 5'3, down to 163 from 235, for reference]

I've been great about my weight loss for the past nine months or so, I've felt better and looked better, worked out more, but I've always been an emotional eater. The past few times my feelings have flared I've been able to suppress the urge to go to food, but....today it got bad.

Today I brought my cat to the vet, thinking she may have a cold, or maybe allergies. I'd only had her four months (I'd gotten her on a recommendation from my therapist to seek an emotional support animal for panic attacks), and she was only three years old. When I left, with very little warning of what was really wrong and with nothing I could do to help, she was gone and an entire month of my rent was gone to the vet.

I live hours away from any family and I'm single, and the time of day meant my friends and family were all at work and I had no one to call. I walked in thinking she just had a kitty cold and I'd buy her a teeth cleaning after her appointment and walked out trying not to ugly cry in front of the vet techs. Afterwards, after months of clean and healthy eating I went to the grocery store in a zombie-like state, bought entirely too much crappy food and ate until I felt sick. Like...enough food to feed 2-3 grown adults sick.

I feel disgusted with myself. I'm trying to better manage my 'addiction', but its hard not to slip into old comforts when the unexpected arises. The weird thing is, I didn't enjoy the food like I had in the past. Everything just tasted too sweet, or too salty or just like nothing at all, and I hope in the future it'll be easier to remember that stuffing myself to feel better isn't quite as satisfying as I'm imagining it.

I'm still debating whether or not to check the scale tomorrow, or to wait half a week or so to undo the damage to look again. Either way, tomorrow its back to taking control of my health. Sorry for ranting, I just needed to get this off my chest, and I feel it'll help me be accountable to post here and not say 'to heck with it I'm sad' again tomorrow. Anyway, my coworkers are getting some boxes of cookies tomorrow.

Why is it that we can't tell difference in weight loss when looking at mirror? (for people starting their journey)

I started at around 295-300, I weight this morning and I am finally in the 260s (269.6) that is about 25 pounds weight loss. Yesterday my sister came over and complimented how much my belly has shrunk, but I look myself at the mirror and I still feel like I look the same as before, this doesn't discourage me since I know the scale doesn't lie, I been taking pictures with a t shirt that I hope to be able to wear confidently when I lose another 25-50 pounds and the difference in the stomach area is insane.

Front and side pictures wearing the same top look completely different. I am in no rush I been losing 2~3 pounds a week doing moderately basic stuff (1000 calorie deficit, 5.2 km walk, etc)

If you guys feeling the same thing, knowing you been losing weight but not seeing it in the mirror I suggest you start taking pictures wearing something, it will show.

Feeling Thankful for this community

I just wanted to say thank you from everyone on this subreddit. I've been coming to this subreddit for the past few months looking at weight loss tips and hearing other peoples success stories, they all give me motivation to keep going.

At the end of my senior year of high school i weighed 280 Lbs(June 2017).When i first started i did not change my eating habits but lost some weight and went down to about 265 in one year. I always wanted to lose weight but was afraid of how much work i had to put in.

Beginning 5 months ago i hit the gym 5 times a week and started to count my calories and start on a caloric deficit . I've lost 45 pounds and i feel amazing. I also began to start seeing changes in my body that i never noticed before.

Anyways this is just a small post to everyone who is on the same boat as me and just a reminder to keep going! You'll see progress before you know it!

P.S- Went from almost a XXXL to a L and a 42 waist to a 36 :)
