So you aren’t sure of how to start? Don’t worry! “How do I get started?” is our most asked question. r/Loseit has helped our users lose over 1,000,000 recorded pounds and these are the steps that we’ve found most useful for getting started.

Why you’re overweight

Our bodies are amazing (yes, yours too!). In order to survive before supermarkets, we had to be able to store energy to get us through lean times, we store this energy as adipose fat tissue. If you put more energy into your body than it needs, it stores it, for (potential) later use. When you put in less than it needs, it uses the stored energy. The more energy you have stored, the more overweight you are. The trick is to get your body to use the stored energy, which can only be done if you give it less energy than it needs, consistently.

Before You Start

The very first step is calculating your calorie needs. You can do that HERE. This will give you an approximation of your calorie needs for the day. The next step is to figure how quickly you want to lose the fat. One pound of fat is equal to 3500 calories. So to lose 1 pound of fat per week you will need to consume 500 calories less than your TDEE (daily calorie needs from the link above). 750 calories less will result in 1.5 pounds and 1000 calories is an aggressive 2 pounds per week.

Tracking

Here is where it begins to resemble work. The most efficient way to lose the weight you desire is to track your calorie intake. This has gotten much simpler over the years and today it can be done right from your smartphone or computer. r/loseit recommends an app like MyFitnessPal, Loseit! (unaffiliated), or Cronometer. Create an account and be honest with it about your current stats, activities, and goals. This is your tracker and no one else needs to see it so don’t cheat the numbers. You’ll find large user created databases that make logging and tracking your food and drinks easy with just the tap of the screen or the push of a button. We also highly recommend the use of a digital kitchen scale for accuracy. Knowing how much of what you're eating is more important than what you're eating. Why? This may explain it.

Creating Your Deficit

How do you create a deficit? This is up to you. r/loseit has a few recommendations but ultimately that decision is yours. There is no perfect diet for everyone. There is a perfect diet for you and you can create it. You can eat less of exactly what you eat now. If you like pizza you can have pizza. Have 2 slices instead of 4. You can try lower calorie replacements for calorie dense foods. Some of the communities favorites are cauliflower rice, zucchini noodles, spaghetti squash in place of their more calorie rich cousins. If it appeals to you an entire dietary change like Keto, Paleo, Vegetarian.

The most important thing to remember is that this selection of foods works for you. Sustainability is the key to long term weight management success. If you hate what you’re eating you won’t stick to it.

Exercise

Is NOT mandatory. You can lose fat and create a deficit through diet alone. There is no requirement of exercise to lose weight.

It has it’s own benefits though. You will burn extra calories. Exercise is shown to be beneficial to mental health and creates an endorphin rush as well. It makes people feel awesome and has been linked to higher rates of long term success when physical activity is included in lifestyle changes.

Crawl, Walk, Run

It can seem like one needs to make a 180 degree course correction to find success. That isn’t necessarily true. Many of our users find that creating small initial changes that build a foundation allows them to progress forward in even, sustained, increments.

Acceptance

You will struggle. We have all struggled. This is natural. There is no tip or trick to get through this though. We encourage you to recognize why you are struggling and forgive yourself for whatever reason that may be. If you overindulged at your last meal that is ok. You can resolve to make the next meal better.

Do not let the pursuit of perfect get in the way of progress. We don’t need perfect. We just want better.

What were/are the most frustrating aspects of losing weight for you, and how did/do you overcome them?

I am really curious about this question — it seems like everyone is struggling with slightly different aspects of weight loss. Sharing our frustrations with one another does a few things in my opinion:

  1. Different people have different solutions to the same problems from which we can learn from.

  2. Being aware of potential pitfalls and challenges makes it easier to overcome them once we’ll face them.

  3. Writing about your challenges forces you to think through and verbalise the challenge and if you dig a little deeper, the root of the problem. Take it one step further and you can think about creative ways how to solve it.

For me, gaining momentum is the most frustrating part. Once I hit my macros, ditched the sugar etc. for a couple of days it is smooth sailing but getting there is always a bit of a struggle. I haven’t found a great solution for this yet (streak apps don’t work). I might try rewarding myself disproportionally for getting the first week right, knowing that afterwards I won’t need a reward as big anymore as I identify the value of staying on track.

Besides this, spontaneity is a bit of a frustration for me. Sometimes I won’t be home in time or leave to a social gathering or so after work and I’m out of food. Not having snacks with me at all times that I can track from a calorie standpoint sometimes throws me off.

Experiencing disordered eating

Since Labor Day, I have lost 18.2 lbs. Initially, I really felt like I was just making better, healthier choices. However, some things have happened since then and I'm now eating in a very disordered way.

I tend to eat once or twice per day, maybe not what normal people would consider proper meals. A couple times in the last month, I've gone over 24 hours without eating.

I recognize that my weight loss progress is technically coming at a safe pace (less than 2lbs/week), but I don't want my weight to go into freefall.

I want to feel like I'm not alone in this, so I hope this is a safe space to discuss such topics.

SV? More like life victory. Thank you r/loseit

Firstly, please remove this post if i've messed it up accidentally, just as I had been under the impression that I had somehow 'accidentally' made it to 81kg (178lbs) by my 22nd year (portion control and I did not see eye to eye). I thought I was succeeding to be healthier and lose weight for years, eating vegetables and drinking vodka (rather than sugary premixes) and steering clear of wheat and dairy due to IBS (still sadly a non-negotiable).

Thirty days ago, feeling heavy and unhappy, I saw an r/loseit post make it to r/all. Rather cynically, I checked the sidebar information and questioned how someone could sanely count calories. Thirty days later, I am counting calories daily - I have become one of the 'crazy' people that I used to shake my head at. Why? Because at 8kg lighter (-17lbs) I can see that I can eat what I want (within my calorie limit) and still lose weight. Because now I am "no longer "bulimic (30 days of not forcing myself to throw up 'bad' foods, even though I accept this illness will be a continual burden), and I believe I am on my way to mending my relationship with food (as well as my body).

Overall, spending 5 mins a day to input my food into myfitnesspal has already put me in a better mental and physical state. Funnily enough, my IBS has not flared up the entire time, which was almost unfathomable to me thirty days ago. Also, for anyone out there justifying their bulimia - please seek help. You deserve to have peace. I've still got some way to go with my weight loss, but I feel free knowing this change is more of a longterm lifestyle one that can only make me healthier. Good luck!

How to deal with comments from immediate family about looking "too thin"

I'm having trouble dealing with comments from my family about my weight loss. I know they come from a place of care and concern, but they are starting to affect me emotionally.

I'm a busy person and I've basically just adopted the habit of stopping snacking. I counted my calories, learned about how weight loss worked and lost some pounds. I am 5'4" and went from 118 lbs to 110/111 lbs so it is moderately noticeable on my frame. I've done blood work and everything is fine. Every time I see my family I get asked if I'm eating enough, I get told I need to put some mass on, that if I get any thinner my organs will stop working, and it is starting to get to my head. I feel like I look healthy and feel healthy. However, these comments make me question whether I look emaciated or something. I've questioned getting back up to 115 lbs, but I'm not sure if this is just a developing insecurity from the comments.

My family consists of people who are thin, so this isn't one of those things where everyone is overweight and a healthy and/or slim body is something rare and so it looks more dramatic. My family members are all very fit and slim, so this leaves me questioning whether I need to make some changes or if they are just being paranoid.

Need guidance with stuck weight loss.

Hi all. I started dieting seriously about a month or two ago. Since then, I started counting calories and eating around 1400 calories a day.

My starting weight was 282. I am 5’9, Male, 21

I currently weigh 259. But i’ve been stuck at this weight for almost a week plus now. I eat like 1400 calories a day. I’m frustrated, as my weight loss was going so well until the last week and now it’s stopped.

I’m a good bit overweight so i’m confused how i could be hitting a platue already... Any help would be appreciated.... I’m greatful I’ve been able to shed 20 pounds but when you’re this much overweight it doesn’t seem to make s difference tbh.
