In the early stages of my journey, but feeling good!

I'm a longtime lurker who's spent a lot of time putting off my weight loss/fitness journey, but I recently hit a milestone: first 15lbs lost!

I've been solidly in the "overweight" BMI range for as long as I can remember, but this is the first time I've really decided to do something about it. Over the years, I inched my way up to 5'8" 191lbs and stayed there for a pretty long time. Didn't help that I used to run in a "diets always fail so you should never try to lose weight" crowd that also encouraged my binge eating. Thankfully, I finally decided to do something about it when I got winded and had significant knee pain walking up and down a single flight of stairs—not ideal for a 22 year old.

Besides all this, I've struggled with depression/OCD for a long time and finally decided to really, truly work on it. In the past, I'd tuned out every therapist who told me to get more active and fix my diet, and now I'm kicking myself for it—they were right! I'd say my conditions got 30% more manageable once I stopped eating like garbage and moving around. The rest improved with a fairly low dose of medication and talk therapy.

Today, after six weeks of CICO/HIIT/yoga, I hit 176lbs! I've stopped craving sugary and salty snacks, haven't binged since starting CICO, and I feel so much better. Actually looking at nutritional information made me realize how little protein I was getting in my former diet. I basically lived off buttered bagels for breakfast and boxed macaroni and cheese for lunch. Nowadays, I eat oatmeal and Greek yogurt in the morning and chicken lettuce wraps in the afternoon. My HIIT workouts and yoga cooldowns are something I look forward to every day, and I have so much more energy than I used to.

I have 30lbs left before I hit my goal, and it's now looking much more attainable than it ever has before! Even though I haven't posted before, this community has really influenced my decision to start bettering myself and looking out for my wellbeing, so thank you!

Starting over again

Hi All!

I had reached my goal weight (5' 4" 135lbs) back in 2015 in time for my wedding and then slowly let myself go back to my old habits and have gone up to 185lbs. My wedding rings won't fit on my finger anymore and I am sick of the status quo in my health and fitness.

I am hoping by joining you here that I will be able to hold myself accountable to my new goals and also have support when I have days where I fail to live up to my goals.

I am a very all or nothing type of person. Where I allow one bad day, one skipped workout, and one binge to push me off my path. It gets stuck in my head that well "you failed, you can't do it, you are meant to be fat forever just accept it"

  • My weight loss goals are incremental where losing 1/2 to 1 pound a week would be a win
  • My fitness goals are simply to walk every day.....neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night will keep me from at least some exercise.
  • My self-care goal is to forgive myself for making poor decisions sometimes due to social, emotional, or other situations.
  • My tools are my fitbit to track calories in/out and r/loseit to help with my accountability and struggles

  • My challenges are my mindset of already being defeated, so why bother. Fuck that! I can do this!
  • My challenges are the depression that tells me to stay in bed. Fuck that! Exercise will help with depression.
  • My challenges are that I love to bake and end up licking the bowl and then eating more than I should. Moderation! I can have only one and then move on. I don't have to lick the bowl to be happy.

If you've made it this far thank you for reading! Today I take my health back into my hands. I can do this and so can you!

Weight Loss Causing Acne?

Hi there! Normally I have pretty manageable acne. A pimple here and there that goes away relatively fast.

However, I’ve been getting tons of cystic acne all over my face the last month and it’s weirding me out.

Im down 35 pounds and it only really started October. I eat whole food plant based vegan so I don’t think it’s my diet because I don’t eat dairy, meat, refined sugar, white bread or oil. I’m really getting worried I’m going to get scaring and or that the weight loss itself is causing it. I’m going to see a dermatologist but it’s hard getting an appointment because of COVID.

Does anyone have experience or advice with this?

Day 1? Starting your weight loss journey on Friday, 23 October 2020? Start here!

Today is your Day 1?

Welcome to r/Loseit!

So you aren’t sure of how to start? Don’t worry! “How do I get started?” is our most asked question. r/Loseit has helped our users lose over 1,000,000 recorded pounds and these are the steps that we’ve found most useful for getting started.

Why you’re overweight

Our bodies are amazing (yes, yours too!). In order to survive before supermarkets, we had to be able to store energy to get us through lean times, we store this energy as adipose fat tissue. If you put more energy into your body than it needs, it stores it, for (potential) later use. When you put in less than it needs, it uses the stored energy. The more energy you have stored, the more overweight you are. The trick is to get your body to use the stored energy, which can only be done if you give it less energy than it needs, consistently.

Before You Start

The very first step is calculating your calorie needs. You can do that HERE. This will give you an approximation of your calorie needs for the day. The next step is to figure how quickly you want to lose the fat. One pound of fat is equal to 3500 calories. So to lose 1 pound of fat per week you will need to consume 500 calories less than your TDEE (daily calorie needs from the link above). 750 calories less will result in 1.5 pounds and 1000 calories is an aggressive 2 pounds per week.

Tracking

Here is where it begins to resemble work. The most efficient way to lose the weight you desire is to track your calorie intake. This has gotten much simpler over the years and today it can be done right from your smartphone or computer. r/loseit recommends an app like MyFitnessPal, Loseit! (unaffiliated), or Cronometer. Create an account and be honest with it about your current stats, activities, and goals. This is your tracker and no one else needs to see it so don’t cheat the numbers. You’ll find large user created databases that make logging and tracking your food and drinks easy with just the tap of the screen or the push of a button. We also highly recommend the use of a digital kitchen scale for accuracy. Knowing how much of what you're eating is more important than what you're eating. Why? This may explain it.

Creating Your Deficit

How do you create a deficit? This is up to you. r/loseit has a few recommendations but ultimately that decision is yours. There is no perfect diet for everyone. There is a perfect diet for you and you can create it. You can eat less of exactly what you eat now. If you like pizza you can have pizza. Have 2 slices instead of 4. You can try lower calorie replacements for calorie dense foods. Some of the communities favorites are cauliflower rice, zucchini noodles, spaghetti squash in place of their more calorie rich cousins. If it appeals to you an entire dietary change like Keto, Paleo, Vegetarian.

The most important thing to remember is that this selection of foods works for you. Sustainability is the key to long term weight management success. If you hate what you’re eating you won’t stick to it.

Exercise

Is NOT mandatory. You can lose fat and create a deficit through diet alone. There is no requirement of exercise to lose weight.

It has it’s own benefits though. You will burn extra calories. Exercise is shown to be beneficial to mental health and creates an endorphin rush as well. It makes people feel awesome and has been linked to higher rates of long term success when physical activity is included in lifestyle changes.

Crawl, Walk, Run

It can seem like one needs to make a 180 degree course correction to find success. That isn’t necessarily true. Many of our users find that creating small initial changes that build a foundation allows them to progress forward in even, sustained, increments.

Acceptance

You will struggle. We have all struggled. This is natural. There is no tip or trick to get through this though. We encourage you to recognize why you are struggling and forgive yourself for whatever reason that may be. If you overindulged at your last meal that is ok. You can resolve to make the next meal better.

Do not let the pursuit of perfect get in the way of progress. We don’t need perfect. We just want better.

Additional resources

Now you’re ready to do this. Here are more details, that may help you refine your plan.

I've lost 6lbs in 4 and a half weeks!!

I'm very excited so I had to share this somewhere. I had been gradually gaining weight since I hit my 20s and after the lockdown added another 30lbs out of seemingly no where, I decided enough was enough.

My starting weight was 13st 6lbs (I am 23F standing at 5'7"). I set my goal to 9st 0lbs because if I'm going to do this, let's aim high!!

My technique is a gradual one, exercise at least once a week at the gym, with a few shorter workouts sprinkled through the weekdays (sit ups, skipping rope, etc). My main weight loss technique is simply cutting down my calories - my meals are generally balanced and healthy, my portion sizes and snacking is not. So I got an app called MyFitnessPal and set up my account: start weight, goal, rate of weight loss desired (1-2lbs a week) and age/height. It calculated that I should eat no more than 1,550 kcal a day and it's very easy to enter and save food items and the kcals so that you can select them for a meal quickly.

Keeping my breakfast and work lunches pretty much the same everyday means the main variable is my snacks and evening meal. I even looked up portion sizes for an idea of how much I should be eating (turns out I need double the veggies I normally make and about half the hot chips).

I wasn't eating very much before because this calorie cut hasn't really left me too hungry. I've just stopped snacking all the time! I've cut all soft drinks and my only liquids are water, a glass of wine as a treat or a cup of tea.

I started this routine 4 and a half weeks ago and this morning I hit 13st 0lbs!!!

I'm so happy that this is working and it's incredible to see the consistent shedding of the pounds!!
