Fitness Journey

Hey everyone, I've never posted anything on reddit before but I thought it might be time to share what I'm planning to do (since I don't really talk about things like weight loss with friends and family).

Currently: absolutely hate how I look (I'm 5'8, about 70-72kg), constantly getting ubereats and turning to food whenever there's pressure in life (habit I've had since I was a kid), weight constantly going up and down because cooking and working out are not part of routine, lethargic, night owl, always late for work, frequently shitty moods

Routines I want to have down:

1) Intermittent fasting: eating between 8:30 - 6:30 for a 14 hour fast; I actually just want to sustain this for the rest of my life since I've grown up watching everyone in my family eats breakfast, lunch, and dinner at regular times. Having a regular eating schedule set in my mind instead of eating randomly and binging late night is going to really help.

2) Working out in the morning: having the energy and self esteem to kick off my day. would influence my food choices positively and force me to sleep early and get to work on time. my local gym opens at 5am on weekdays but I'm going to be doing 6am workouts (gonna forget about being part of 4:30am wake up gang for now because that is just intangible to me if I'm getting up at 8:30 right now)

3) In bed by 9:30 and wake up by 5:30: this has always been super hard because I have anxiety but with meditation, magnesium/melatonin for sleep and having an organized home (clutter really fucks with anxiety as well) I believe I can do it. I'm very unproductive after 9 and tend to watch tv/snack - when it gets too late I have to fall asleep to a movie because my brain in the late night is not a fun place. Sleeping around 9-9:30 would help me feel less alone and calm since it's now summer and the sun sets pretty late and rises earlier. I ordered an extra alarm clock so I can put it in the bathroom so I'd be forced to get up and maybe attach an encouragement post-it note beside the alarm.

4) Make fitness part of my lifestyle: I don't really have a group of people to gym with so I'm hoping to make this journey more sustainable by getting involved with run clubs and going to races. I did my first 5k race this month and it was a lot of fun - I find the social aspect pretty motivating. It pretty much helped me curb smoking.

Motivation (might add to this later):

  • Mental health - I've struggled with anxiety and depression for almost 10 years since grade 9. I'm a pretty outgoing and social person but I almost constantly am so self aware and anxious. I get depressed and my place becomes a mess if I don't feel like I have a handle on my lifestyle
  • Professional Confidence - I'm a pretty ambitious person and I get involved with a lot of work presentations and community leadership/volunteering and I'm working on becoming an entrepreneur. I can come across as assertive and confident but in the back of my mind is always a nagging voice reminding me I'm not my best self because of my body image and it sucks. It's so unnecessary to be in my own way like that when there are actual obstacles to focus on. Self confidence in how I'm perceived is something I have control over and I will overcome.
  • Love life - obvious one for many of us. There are so many times where I just don't want to hang out with people because I feel fat and ugly. Even if they're interested I'll tell myself they're not serious about me because they can do better. I feel way more judgemental because I project my sense of inadequacy onto others and it's not cool.
  • Human potential - I've never looked at myself in a swimsuit picture and have been proud of it. I've never been photographed at the beach. If it's within my capacity to get there, why would I spend my twenties wondering what if? I'm turning 25 in a month and even though I spent a large portion of my early 20s feeling uncomfortable in my body doesn't mean I can't achieve freedom from this pain in my late twenties.

There's thousands of people here and this was just intended for me to get out there and refer to, but I don't want to just keep it to myself. I want to be held accountable and do check-ins and eventually show others that they can do it too.

Anyone else feel sad getting rid of old, bigger clothes after losing weight?

Some background - I started an earnest push to lose weight about 7 months ago when I just decided I couldn't keep living the way I was at my heaviest. I didn't buy a scale until a few months in, but estimate I was probably at 430lbs wearing men's 4XL/52 waist when I started. Today I'm at 260lbs and finally bought a ton of new clothes since the old were literally just parachutes on me at this point.

In general I'm beyond ecstatic about my weight loss and just earlier today thought that this is the happiest I've been in years. However, when I was packing up a ton of my old clothes tonight to be donated or thrown away - I just started to feel really sad about it. I'm not sure if it's just because I have a tendency to be overly sentimental with things at times or I'm looking at how big these are and can't believe I let myself live that way for so long - probably a bit of both.

This happen to anyone else? It's entirely possible this is just a weird thing of mine.

I’m addicted to sweets and it’s really making it difficult for me to lose weight.

Sorry for any formatting errors, I’m on mobile. I’m a 5’3, 141 lbs, 21 year old female. I started my weight loss journey at 152 lbs. Nothing worked for me at first, as I have hypothyroidism, but I came across the keto diet and decided to give it a shot. I lost about 7 pounds in just a week and a half. This was huge for me, as nothing else has ever worked. I had a cheat day and didn’t gain any weight back, so I decided that maybe I should just stay off keto, maybe my metabolism wasn’t as sluggish anymore. Luckily, I kept the weight off, but I have been losing and gaining two pounds weekly ever since then (it’s been about three months). I’ve realized the source of my problem is sugar. Im addicted to sweets and have come to the conclusion that I always break my diets because of my sugar craving. I don’t know why this is, I’m sure if I were able to give up sugar that I’d be losing weight so easily, yet it is coming off so slowly despite what I do. I tried working out and counting calories, but I always dedicated at least 200 calories to some sort of sweet treat, however I didn’t think it would be an issue since I was still at a caloric deficit. It seems that there’s nothing else I can do to get rid of these last 10 pounds other than cutting out sugar, but I can’t do it. Im literally addicted. I crave it all the time. Does anyone know how to kick this habit or why I even have this habit to begin with? Living with my boyfriend now, I’ve realized that always wanting sugar isn’t a common thing. Up til now, I thought it was normal but I’m learning that it’s not. I do have hypothyroidism and my insulin levels have always been in the prediabetic range, however I am not diabetic. I asked my doctor if I was insulin resistant, as I had the symptoms that correspond with it, but she assured me that I do not. So I have no idea where these cravings are coming from.

Edit: I also tried keto again a few weeks ago, and I only lost one pound in a full two weeks so i felt that it stopped working for me for some reason. When I do keto, I satisfy my sugar cravings by eating Atkin’s chocolate that are extremely low in carbs.

I've been lacking discipline

Hey all,

I've been subscribed to this sub for a little over a year. I started out at 146 lbs and got down to 119 ( I am 5' 1" for reference), following others on here and getting involved with weight loss challenges. I was working nights at the time, and I feel like my hunger was a lot less overall when I did. I switched to days at the end of October and immediately the weight started coming back. On March 1st I ordered my wedding dress. I've still been active since then, and I even ran a 10k this morning. My diet has been AWFUL. I feel like I am so much more hungry when I get home from work than I used to be. I will even disregard portion sizes and eat until I'm mentally satisfied. I weighed in after I got home from my 10k today and I'm 5 lbs heavier than I was when I ordered the dress. Now I'm stressing! So needless to say, I need some words of encouragement and some advice from those of you who may be have been in my shoes from changing work schedules. What are some foods that keep you full for a long time? When I worked nights, I'd usually eat in reverse and have a dinner meal as my "breakfast", and basically eat lighter and ultimately when I got home in the mornings just eat a hard-boiled egg and some toast and felt satisfied. Now I'll eat two hard boiled eggs and a hash brown patty baked in the oven for breakfast and my stomach will be growling two hours later. So now I am stressing that I will not fit in my dress. It won't be in until July, so I know I can lose at least the 5 lbs needed to get back to the weight I was when I ordered it. I just need help staying full! I was eating a 1200 calorie in a 24 hour period diet on nights. Ideally I'd like to do that on days. I work Noon-10 PM now and try not to eat breakfast until right before I leave for work so I can stay full (unsuccessfully). Any advice? Any extra motivation and discipline you can lend me? 😁

Post-partum weight loss plateau

Hi everyone,

First time posting to this sub and I am six months post-partum.

I have 4lbs left to lose and, as tends to be the case with the final 5-10, they will not budge.

I do Tabata once a week (just a beginner for now but am feeling more confident to ramp it up starting next month) and on the days I do not do those workouts (I take professional classes, so we have done the cardo ones, as well as bands and weights) I run an hour each day with only one day of rest from it, plus stroller walks with baby everyday for 45 minutes to an hour, lift weights every other day and do band exercises (so Pilates-type videos) on days I don't do weights.

My current diet is almost entirely vegetarian, no sugar, no alcohol.

Here's the issue. I don't purposely mean to do this, but because I am home with baby all day while SO works full-time, depending on what is going on with baby, I have found that for a lot of days (over the past month especially) I might not even be eating 1200 calories. It's not on purpose, but I have to meet baby's needs before my own, so then it's not until I am going to bed that I realize, "Oh crap, I don't think I ate enough today."

Here's the other kicker- maybe it's just because I am distracted by taking care of baby, but on the days I haven't eaten enough, I genuinely do not feel hungry and I find it hard to force-feed myself if I just am not hungry. On days I have Tabata, i am super hungry and so I eat a big meal while baby naps and before I do anything else as a just in case, then have dinner when SO is home. On days where I am not as super active I find it harder to make myself eat if I am not hungry (even though I run quite a lot).

Have I screwed up my system, and that is why I am not losing the last few pounds? Or is it just going to take a lot of time? Should I force-feed myself if I am truly not hungry?

[NSV/SV] 45 lbs lost + exercise = posture/height gains (1”!)

Hey everyone! I’m in the Harry Potter challenge (Go Team Herbology and Hufflepuffs!), and was kind of faffing about my weight loss journey for the past year, cutting 30 lbs from removing full sugar sodas but little else. I decided to cut the shit and get serious for the new year.

I started exercising in January, but the diet component was hit or miss for a while. For some reason, despite having a fucking degree in Math, having 1200-2000+ of something to track was just fucking with my brain too much. I wanted the flexibility of calorie count (and of course CICO is what makes every other plan work), but smaller numbers to track.

So I started WW on April 15th and tweaked my lower back at my first meeting right after weighing in. If that’s not a wake-up call, I don’t know what is.

I’ve been swimming for the past few months (about 3x/week), and lifting weights with Starting Strength (2-3x/week), with some bicycling thrown in (about 30 minutes a week, 9 mph) Being more mindful of my food intake (and making smarter choices, by extension) was enough to see some real gains.

Apparently, even height.

I have a slouching problem, which is probably why I fucked up my back. I was using the scale at the gym, one of those doctor’s scales with the retractable height rod and the level on top. I was curious because I was noticing small things, like my pants becoming more capri length and the rest of my clothes fitting differently.

I went from a little over 5’7 to 5’8.25”. :)

23F -> 24F

HW: 365 lbs (June/July 2018)

SW: 331.6 lbs (April 15, 2019, with clothes and shoes on because we don’t condone nudity in public)

CW: 319.8 lbs (Reducing sodium rocks, who would have thought?) at home, 324 with clothes on at the gym. (A 7.6 lbs drop from last Monday!)

~5’7” -> 5’8.25”

Swim: 3:51/100 yd (freestyle, only 100 yd) -> 2:59/100 yd (set during a 200 yd swim, half freestyle/half backstroke)

Bench: 45 lbs x 5 -> 115 lbs x 5 (135 lbs 1RM)

Squat: 45 lbs x 5 -> 135 lbs x 5 (155 lbs 1RM)

Deadlift: 95 lbs x 5 -> 165 lbs x 5 (185 lbs 1RM)

Now, to make some adjustments to my BMI based mini goals. :)

You all have been wonderful! Thank you. I hope to update when I cross out of the 300s!
