What are you doing to continue your weight loss/ health journey in your new normal?

We are a very large, diverse group from all over the world. Yet we now share two things in common. We are all somewhere on our journey of weight loss and now we are experiencing significant changes in our life due to the pandemic. I believe that other people's experience and knowledge can be one of the best resources. So, I thought I'd start a thread collecting tips and ideas you are using during this time. Any suggestion is welcome. You never know how much you can help and inspire someone.

I'll start.

  1. For low impact cardio I like Leslie Sansone videos. They are walking based videos 15,20, 30 and 45 minutes in length available on Youtube and Amazon Prime. I'd say these are good for folks who can't do super jumpy or complex choreography type work outs.

  2. To keep up on achieving step goals I simply walk around my house while I'm making some phone calls. I may not be moving at a fast pace but I can be pleasantly surprised at how many steps I get in during some regular conversations/check ins with my older loved ones.

  3. To get some movement and to elevate my mood, I get my playlists going and do an old fashion dance party locked in my bedroom where no one can see me make a fool of myself.

  4. Finally, I plan out and log my food in my preferred app (MFP) for the day as I eat breakfast. Seeing what I can eat helps me from over indulging.

Please share. I'd love to hear what you are doing during this new phase of our lives? Thanks!

A new life

I've posted in here before, but I want to put this accomplishment in here as it's really something I didnt think was possible for me back in early December. I had totally lost my way over the last few years (in my 30s now). I was always into sports and social activities. I have a demanding desk job but those things used to keep me in a decent weight range. Without noticing, i kept gaining weight and the sports and wanting to do anything with anyone started to exponetially decrease. I found myself on Dec 10, 2019 with some results from the doctor that floored me. I'm a grown man who likes to think of himself as strong but I cried and felt bad for myself and wanted to blame so many things. I was sitting there at 315 pounds and thought hope was lost. I took that week to truly figure out where I had gone wrong. There were plenty of answers but 1 stuck out to me. I had given up on myself. I quit caring. I didnt think anyone in my life cared about me because I didnt have any respect for myself. That all changed on December 15th, 2019.

There are a lot of people who try a lot of different diets. I am here to encourage you with one very simple fact. I didnt follow any of that bullshit. I set some parameters for myself which was I would not drink one calorie (I drink diet soda still and while I know that's notngreay for now its necessary for me), I'd cut down on almost all sugar (never had a huge sweet tooth anyway), and I'd keep my daily calorie range between 1,800 and 2,200 (IF utilized loosely I generally eat from 12 to 8). Other than that, I didnt really limit myself. I am not an great cook, so I ate a lot of chipolte bowls, fruit, steak, chicken, brown rice, and Turkey. There have been days where I've had pizza or other normal foods but they key was instead of crushing 5 or 6 slices on had 3 and then a sensible dinner. I want to say that most days from December 15th to now have not left me feeling starving or unable to maintain this. I've adjusted to my new way of eating. My friends and family always accommodate me as I'm very italian so Sunday dinners are usually carb fests but they always have some protein on the ready for me. I also always have a pack of strawberries on hand and may have eaten more strawberries in the last 3 months than any human ever has. In 3 months time, I'm now down 55 pounds. I'm right at the 260 mark, and consistenly losing. I have hit some plateau but you can let these negatively effect you. If you know your calories like Joel Embiid said "Trust the process"

Also I implore you to find some sort of exercise you love. I found basketball again and it has definitely sped up my weight loss. I also do HIIT training on the elliptical for 35 minutes at least 3 times a week. When you start sweating again, it releases a different feeling in you. Start slow, but you will be surprised what your body can actually handle.

Overall, I remember there was a time where putting on my shoes or standing to long hurt my back. Those days are long gone. As I lose the weight I tell myself the weights I just passed I will never see again. My mood is so much better and my energy is through the roof. I will be on this journey the rest of my life. I am here to say there is a lot of talk about Keto or other fad diets is by no means the only way (I eat carbs daily just whole grains). If you have any questions please reach out. Some people on here reached out to me and it really inspired me and I'd love to do the same. WE GOT THIS EVERYBODY!!

Day 1? Starting your weight loss journey on Wednesday, 18 March 2020? Start here!

Today is your Day 1?

Welcome to r/Loseit!

So you aren’t sure of how to start? Don’t worry! “How do I get started?” is our most asked question. r/Loseit has helped our users lose over 1,000,000 recorded pounds and these are the steps that we’ve found most useful for getting started.

Why you’re overweight

Our bodies are amazing (yes, yours too!). In order to survive before supermarkets, we had to be able to store energy to get us through lean times, we store this energy as adipose fat tissue. If you put more energy into your body than it needs, it stores it, for (potential) later use. When you put in less than it needs, it uses the stored energy. The more energy you have stored, the more overweight you are. The trick is to get your body to use the stored energy, which can only be done if you give it less energy than it needs, consistently.

Before You Start

The very first step is calculating your calorie needs. You can do that HERE. This will give you an approximation of your calorie needs for the day. The next step is to figure how quickly you want to lose the fat. One pound of fat is equal to 3500 calories. So to lose 1 pound of fat per week you will need to consume 500 calories less than your TDEE (daily calorie needs from the link above). 750 calories less will result in 1.5 pounds and 1000 calories is an aggressive 2 pounds per week.

Tracking

Here is where it begins to resemble work. The most efficient way to lose the weight you desire is to track your calorie intake. This has gotten much simpler over the years and today it can be done right from your smartphone or computer. r/loseit recommends an app like MyFitnessPal, Loseit! (unaffiliated), or Cronometer. Create an account and be honest with it about your current stats, activities, and goals. This is your tracker and no one else needs to see it so don’t cheat the numbers. You’ll find large user created databases that make logging and tracking your food and drinks easy with just the tap of the screen or the push of a button. We also highly recommend the use of a digital kitchen scale for accuracy. Knowing how much of what you're eating is more important than what you're eating. Why? This may explain it.

Creating Your Deficit

How do you create a deficit? This is up to you. r/loseit has a few recommendations but ultimately that decision is yours. There is no perfect diet for everyone. There is a perfect diet for you and you can create it. You can eat less of exactly what you eat now. If you like pizza you can have pizza. Have 2 slices instead of 4. You can try lower calorie replacements for calorie dense foods. Some of the communities favorites are cauliflower rice, zucchini noodles, spaghetti squash in place of their more calorie rich cousins. If it appeals to you an entire dietary change like Keto, Paleo, Vegetarian.

The most important thing to remember is that this selection of foods works for you. Sustainability is the key to long term weight management success. If you hate what you’re eating you won’t stick to it.

Exercise

Is NOT mandatory. You can lose fat and create a deficit through diet alone. There is no requirement of exercise to lose weight.

It has it’s own benefits though. You will burn extra calories. Exercise is shown to be beneficial to mental health and creates an endorphin rush as well. It makes people feel awesome and has been linked to higher rates of long term success when physical activity is included in lifestyle changes.

Crawl, Walk, Run

It can seem like one needs to make a 180 degree course correction to find success. That isn’t necessarily true. Many of our users find that creating small initial changes that build a foundation allows them to progress forward in even, sustained, increments.

Acceptance

You will struggle. We have all struggled. This is natural. There is no tip or trick to get through this though. We encourage you to recognize why you are struggling and forgive yourself for whatever reason that may be. If you overindulged at your last meal that is ok. You can resolve to make the next meal better.

Do not let the pursuit of perfect get in the way of progress. We don’t need perfect. We just want better.

Additional resources

Now you’re ready to do this. Here are more details, that may help you refine your plan.

I have the perfect chance to restart my weight loss journey, but I don't know how to take it.

For context, I started my weight loss in summer. My start weight was 150lbs, my current weight is 125lbs, and my goal weight was 115lbs. I'm 5'4 and female. I started in July and I thought I would be done by November. I quit at around September, 10 lbs above my goal weight.

I had really low self esteem, and I had this idea that my life would be perfect once I was thinner. That was absolutely wrong. Some things improved and some declined. I now have more time for hobbies and I feel comfortable with being seen in public. But, in the process, I broke up with my ex and now I don't have any friends, as that relationship took up most of my time.

I'm at a healthy weight for my height, and I've been maintaining without trying, so I completely lost motivation. I don't want to be 115lbs anymore. At the same time, I'm not comfortable with the way that I look. When I was on a diet, all I knew was that I needed to eat a limited amount of calories. My "diet" consisted of 1400-1200 calories worth of protein bars and tv dinners. I don't know anything about protein and what types of nutrients I need to be getting. My hair is thin, I'm nauseous all the time, and I need it to stop. My period is always late.

I planned to continue my diet next summer. My idea is that I'd be able to go back to school as a happier person and it'd be better to make progress during a period where I wouldn't be seen. However, I got a month off of school due to the coronavirus. I don't know if I believe in fate, but this just feels like a giant sign.

I don't want to be any specific number. I just want to build muscle, be happy with myself, and be confident enough to approach people. I want my hair to be thick enough to bleach and dye.

I don't know what foods to eat or how much I should exercise. What should I do?

Lamenting on things

Hi, I'm a 17 yr. old Male, 5'10 and 260.

this first part will sort of be like a vent.

I started my weight loss journey about a month ago, and then, the corona quarantine hits. I lost about 10 pounds within that month and I gained them back. I've just been really unmotivated to workout at home because I can't seem to find any benefit as I did when I was hitting the gym. I also can't diet properly since I snack way too much now since I'm at home. I want to hit my goal of 160 before college and I was in a fairly good place. Not I've lost progress because I can't do things how I want to.

Tl:Dr

What are some ways that i can work out at home that will be efficient? I'm trying to do HIIT at home, with no equipment.

What are the ways that I can stop myself from overeating/diet properly? I get urges to just eat and I don't know what I could do about them.

Allergic to nuts and hate Yogurt, what can I replace them with?

Hey all.

When I was in college, I gained a good 40 lbs and never really got them off. Likewise, I've been dealing with issues (Never been diagnosed, but my friends say it sounds like depression) for close to 10 years and I'd like to shake myself out of my funk, or at the very least do as much as I can to better myself.

I listed five things I wanted to do in three months, and one of those things is lose 30lbs. I've never really set goals before so I'm not sure if this is in the ballpark of healthy or not, but what I do know is that cutting out the 2L of Mtn Dew I drink daily is good for at least 10 of those lbs, so I figured it was more akin to 20lbs to lose. I've also got a newfound appreciation for vegetables since I stopped eating them Steamed, Steamed, Steamed and only Steamed.

The problem is, as the title states, a bunch of websites I'm looking at are saying to eat Chicken (That's fine), Nuts (That's a problem), and Yogurt (Blegh) as my primary weight loss foods among others. I'm allergic to nuts, not deathly (I can still eat them, it's just.... painful) and I detest Yogurt to it's core. What can I replace them with? I'm in the biggest city in my state and have access to an Asian market and a Middle Eastern market as well, if that helps narrow down a replacement.

I'm not too big on actually losing the 30lbs if that much in three months is unhealthy, it was a goal and I want to meet it.

Something that made my day!

Today was a bad day for me. I'm going through a lot of crap in my life, and it was really hitting me hard today. I usually rely on my job as a barista to keep my mind busy and make me feel needed, but with the corona stuff happening, it was really slow. There were also less coworkers there, so overall, it was just a sad, blah sort of day.

However, one customer came through that really made me feel good. She was talking about the calories in the drink she was getting, and mentioned she was trying to cut back and lose a few pounds. She looked at me and said, "you're already fit, so you might not worry about this stuff." Lol! I told her I'd recently lost almost 100 lbs, and she was shocked! I told her my Starbucks go-tos, because we have some pretty good food choices that I've been eating all along during my weight loss.

It was really validating to hear that. I've been obese for much of my adult life, and in my mind I still feel like a fat girl a lot of the time. I don't know what people see when they see me. It made me feel great! This incident, and the guy who yelled at me in traffic the other day and called me an effing c-word, but not a FAT effing c-word, drove it home that I'm not fat anymore. Lol 😊
