I finally got under 160!

Okay, so this is perhaps NOT a huge milestone, but here it goes!

I started my weight loss journey on November 11th, 2020 after gaining 30+ pounds abroad last year and being the heaviest I’ve ever been.

I’m 5’4” and was about 168 lbs at my heaviest, which I have never been- I’ve usually hovered around 125-135 and used to be quite active.

Well, after time abroad, not being as active and eating delicious food and then coming back to a pandemic, I decided I didn’t want to gain any more weight and figured I should start down the path. My goal is 140 lbs, and then seeing how I feel from there!

Now, to the victory! I’ve been doing CICO and 10:14 IF to start, going for walks/doing RingFit 5 out of 7 days in the week. It’s been a struggle - I kept flip flopping between 161 - 162 - 163 - back to 162. It was hard to make habits stick, but today, today: I’m finally under 160!

This is such an exciting moment because to me, it signifies that I’ve actually done something right, and now that I’m under 160, I’m determined to not let myself get back over, so it’s solidified my resolve to keep going!

I need advice and comments on how to keep on making progress.

So I started my weight loss process in Febuary this year. My initial weight was 128 kg (282lb) and I reached 98 kg (216lb) in October. I've lost 30 kg so far (66lb). I'm really happy with this since it's something I never though possible. However, I'm finding it hard for a variety of reasons. First, I'm not working with the nutritionist I was working with at the beginning anymore. He used to gave me some pills to manage my anxiety. This is something I didn't like so much but I did it since it was really hard for me at the beginning. But now I've decided that I do not want to depend on them to keep on losing weight so I've stopped taking them. I'm trying to switch to a more mindful approach to eating but it hasn't been that easy, after having been dieting for 9 months aprox. I also want to learn and experiment more in the kitchen, like making healthy meals and stuff. I exercise every day. I used to do it at home (with YouTube videos) but I started going to a gym a month ago. I used to do more cardio but now I'm focusing on strenght training. Also, I started going to therapy and it's helped me soooooo much. I'm still working on managing my emotional eating, which I think might be the reason why I haven't been able to lose any weight in around 6 weeks. If you've taking the time to read all of this, thank you very much! And feel free to leave any comments you think might be helpful for me. This community is very uplifting and inspiring. Welcome to r/Loseit!

So you aren’t sure of how to start? Don’t worry! “How do I get started?” is our most asked question. r/Loseit has helped our users lose over 1,000,000 recorded pounds and these are the steps that we’ve found most useful for getting started.

Why you’re overweight

Our bodies are amazing (yes, yours too!). In order to survive before supermarkets, we had to be able to store energy to get us through lean times, we store this energy as adipose fat tissue. If you put more energy into your body than it needs, it stores it, for (potential) later use. When you put in less than it needs, it uses the stored energy. The more energy you have stored, the more overweight you are. The trick is to get your body to use the stored energy, which can only be done if you give it less energy than it needs, consistently.

Before You Start

The very first step is calculating your calorie needs. You can do that HERE. This will give you an approximation of your calorie needs for the day. The next step is to figure how quickly you want to lose the fat. One pound of fat is equal to 3500 calories. So to lose 1 pound of fat per week you will need to consume 500 calories less than your TDEE (daily calorie needs from the link above). 750 calories less will result in 1.5 pounds and 1000 calories is an aggressive 2 pounds per week.

Tracking

Here is where it begins to resemble work. The most efficient way to lose the weight you desire is to track your calorie intake. This has gotten much simpler over the years and today it can be done right from your smartphone or computer. r/loseit recommends an app like MyFitnessPal, Loseit! (unaffiliated), or Cronometer. Create an account and be honest with it about your current stats, activities, and goals. This is your tracker and no one else needs to see it so don’t cheat the numbers. You’ll find large user created databases that make logging and tracking your food and drinks easy with just the tap of the screen or the push of a button. We also highly recommend the use of a digital kitchen scale for accuracy. Knowing how much of what you're eating is more important than what you're eating. Why? This may explain it.

Creating Your Deficit

How do you create a deficit? This is up to you. r/loseit has a few recommendations but ultimately that decision is yours. There is no perfect diet for everyone. There is a perfect diet for you and you can create it. You can eat less of exactly what you eat now. If you like pizza you can have pizza. Have 2 slices instead of 4. You can try lower calorie replacements for calorie dense foods. Some of the communities favorites are cauliflower rice, zucchini noodles, spaghetti squash in place of their more calorie rich cousins. If it appeals to you an entire dietary change like Keto, Paleo, Vegetarian.

The most important thing to remember is that this selection of foods works for you. Sustainability is the key to long term weight management success. If you hate what you’re eating you won’t stick to it.

Exercise

Is NOT mandatory. You can lose fat and create a deficit through diet alone. There is no requirement of exercise to lose weight.

It has it’s own benefits though. You will burn extra calories. Exercise is shown to be beneficial to mental health and creates an endorphin rush as well. It makes people feel awesome and has been linked to higher rates of long term success when physical activity is included in lifestyle changes.

Crawl, Walk, Run

It can seem like one needs to make a 180 degree course correction to find success. That isn’t necessarily true. Many of our users find that creating small initial changes that build a foundation allows them to progress forward in even, sustained, increments.

Acceptance

You will struggle. We have all struggled. This is natural. There is no tip or trick to get through this though. We encourage you to recognize why you are struggling and forgive yourself for whatever reason that may be. If you overindulged at your last meal that is ok. You can resolve to make the next meal better.

Do not let the pursuit of perfect get in the way of progress. We don’t need perfect. We just want better.

When did you start noticing your progress on your body?

Context: I've recently started CICO again for the first time in several years after moving into my own apartment. Last time I did it, I was weighing myself weekly, and I could see the progress as I went. Problem is that now, I don't own a scale. While I probably could have just bought one, I thought I'd experiment with not checking in all the time and waiting it out until Christmas because my parents are getting me a bunch of random household things this year, a scale included.

So, the problem now is that I'm starting to get really scared nothing is happening. I'm within 50-100 calories of my goal pretty much every day (I weigh everything meticulously), and it's been close to three months of daily tracking on MyFitnessPal with the setting at "lose one pound a week." I know my intake is way down from the previous several months, and I'm at least 50 pounds heavier than last time I did CICO, so in theory, I should be losing weight.

I don't see anything happening, though. I look and feel the same, my clothes fit the same, and the only real progress I've noticed is that it's way easier to stick to my calorie goals. I'm just so worried that I'm not actually losing weight, and I honestly don't know how my mental health would survive that hit if the past few months were all for nothing.

So, really, my question is: when did you start to notice your weight loss? Was it weeks? Months? I'm just feeling so discouraged right now.

Finding out things you thought were healthy actually aren't is one of the most discouraging things

People need to stop talking like all veggies are equal, and 'free food', cos i just found out parsnips are one of the most high carb veggies so actually not that great for weight loss. Same as how people act like you can eat as much fruit as you like when actually it's still full of sugar, natural or not.

Plus i've been eating a lot of rice pudding/custard, which i know aren't healthy exactly, but if i want a treat it seemed more healthy than, say, chocolate cake as a dessert. They often label cans of rice pud and custard as "low fat" but when i actually checked the nutritional info, they actually have more fat and sugar than my fave choc bar!!!

So just needed a rant as that pissed me off.
