Day 1? Starting your weight loss journey on Saturday, 03 April 2021? Start here!

Today is your Day 1?

Welcome to r/Loseit!

So you aren’t sure of how to start? Don’t worry! “How do I get started?” is our most asked question. r/Loseit has helped our users lose over 1,000,000 recorded pounds and these are the steps that we’ve found most useful for getting started.

Why you’re overweight

Our bodies are amazing (yes, yours too!). In order to survive before supermarkets, we had to be able to store energy to get us through lean times, we store this energy as adipose fat tissue. If you put more energy into your body than it needs, it stores it, for (potential) later use. When you put in less than it needs, it uses the stored energy. The more energy you have stored, the more overweight you are. The trick is to get your body to use the stored energy, which can only be done if you give it less energy than it needs, consistently.

Before You Start

The very first step is calculating your calorie needs. You can do that HERE. This will give you an approximation of your calorie needs for the day. The next step is to figure how quickly you want to lose the fat. One pound of fat is equal to 3500 calories. So to lose 1 pound of fat per week you will need to consume 500 calories less than your TDEE (daily calorie needs from the link above). 750 calories less will result in 1.5 pounds and 1000 calories is an aggressive 2 pounds per week.

Tracking

Here is where it begins to resemble work. The most efficient way to lose the weight you desire is to track your calorie intake. This has gotten much simpler over the years and today it can be done right from your smartphone or computer. r/loseit recommends an app like MyFitnessPal, Loseit! (unaffiliated), or Cronometer. Create an account and be honest with it about your current stats, activities, and goals. This is your tracker and no one else needs to see it so don’t cheat the numbers. You’ll find large user created databases that make logging and tracking your food and drinks easy with just the tap of the screen or the push of a button. We also highly recommend the use of a digital kitchen scale for accuracy. Knowing how much of what you're eating is more important than what you're eating. Why? This may explain it.

Creating Your Deficit

How do you create a deficit? This is up to you. r/loseit has a few recommendations but ultimately that decision is yours. There is no perfect diet for everyone. There is a perfect diet for you and you can create it. You can eat less of exactly what you eat now. If you like pizza you can have pizza. Have 2 slices instead of 4. You can try lower calorie replacements for calorie dense foods. Some of the communities favorites are cauliflower rice, zucchini noodles, spaghetti squash in place of their more calorie rich cousins. If it appeals to you an entire dietary change like Keto, Paleo, Vegetarian.

The most important thing to remember is that this selection of foods works for you. Sustainability is the key to long term weight management success. If you hate what you’re eating you won’t stick to it.

Exercise

Is NOT mandatory. You can lose fat and create a deficit through diet alone. There is no requirement of exercise to lose weight.

It has it’s own benefits though. You will burn extra calories. Exercise is shown to be beneficial to mental health and creates an endorphin rush as well. It makes people feel *awesome* and has been linked to higher rates of long term success when physical activity is included in lifestyle changes.

Crawl, Walk, Run

It can seem like one needs to make a 180 degree course correction to find success. That isn’t necessarily true. Many of our users find that creating small initial changes that build a foundation allows them to progress forward in even, sustained, increments.

Acceptance

You will struggle. We have all struggled. This is natural. There is no tip or trick to get through this though. We encourage you to recognize why you are struggling and forgive yourself for whatever reason that may be. If you overindulged at your last meal that is ok. You can resolve to make the next meal better.

Do not let the pursuit of perfect get in the way of progress. We don’t need perfect. We just want better.

(Vent) I struggle to like the way my breasts look after weight loss.

I’m 18F 5’7, SW156lbs/70.7kg, CW 128lbs/58kg

Over about 1.5 year period through small healthy lifestyle changes, I managed to lose close to 30lbs and am the fittest and smallest I’ve ever been. I am so proud of myself that I not only was able to lose weight in a healthy way without dieting (just TDEE and exercise), but also thoroughly educating myself on nutrition and how to properly nourish my body. I did it in a manner where I’ve set myself up for success in terms of sustainability, which I’m so proud of especially considering I have a bad habit of an “all or nothing” mindset. I am so proud of the way I look not because I fit a beauty standard but rather it’s physical evidence to the effort I’ve put in to living healthily.

That being said however, most of my fat loss came from my stomach and chest. When I was close to overweight by bmi standards (was not fat by any means just lived very unhealthily), I had a really REALLY large chest, being a 34G cup. To be honest, I strongly disliked them simply because they were disproportionate to my body and made me appear larger if I wasn’t wearing a tight shirt. I also embarrassingly believed a lot of my worth from the eyes of men, which I don’t subscribe to now, was based on my chest size. When I lost weight, I dropped 4 cup sizes, which I find somewhat astounding for only a little under 30lbs.

My body looks great, and I love my new chest size and looks fantastic in a bra, but my boobs are a little saggy now due to extra skin (shallow top and full bottom) and it has sparked some insecurity. I’m barely out of my teens (and still technically a teenager), and I have boobs that make me look like a mom post-breastfeeding. It doesn’t matter that much because it’s only really an issue when I’m not wearing a bra which is before sleeping or entering the shower, but I find it embarrassing that they just flop around? I don’t know how to explain it. The insecurity also makes intimacy with my partner in the future very anxiety inducing. Has anyone else faced this problem?

Getting over a bad patch!

I was feeling invincible in my weight loss until recently. I’m a short woman so I was under no illusion that my weight would drop really fast, but I still managed to achieve a 10lb weight loss in as many weeks. It didn’t feel challenging, I was in a really good routine and had even broken the sugar habit.

Then I moved house and with the stress, the bad habits came RIGHT back. Chocolate all day long, sugar for breakfast, barely drinking enough water and getting takeaways all the time. I fell off the wagon and I fell hard. The past few days I’ve noticed my weight loss has totally stalled since I moved and it’s been quite depressing - I felt like giving up. I was getting quite cocky before but it just goes to show how easy it is for things to derail.

But I decided to have a read of r/loseit tonight and I guess the stories, motivation and encouragement from you all has been infectious. I’ve just put in an order for a healthy online food shop so I’ll be stocked up for the week, planned my meals and am going to finally start exercising again. I have space, a nice new area for running and even some new workout gear, so no excuses! The house is clear of junk food (because I ate it lol, but at least it’s gone now!) and I feel ready to start again. Once this Easter weekend has gone, I’ll be back on it.

Looking to hit the one stone mark (14lbs) by the end of April. Let’s go!! Thanks everyone for being such a positive community - you’re keeping me going!

No weight loss after 3 months, birth control issue?

I'm so frustrated. I've been going to the gym for about two months now. I've been counting calories for three months, I was at a 1200 calorie budget until I recently went up to 1400 because I was told it wasn't healthy. In these 3 months, I've lost 2 pounds. Well, it seems like I lost 2 pounds, my weight fluctuates so much I could just as well have lost 0.

For some background, I got on birth control nearly a year ago went from 160 lbs to 175 lbs. Late January I was told that my old birth control pills were no longer covered and had to switch and deal with all of the hormone changes in that.

I'm wondering if anyone here has dealt with no real weight loss because of their birth control to see if that's what is causing me to be stuck. I've been going to the gym at least 3 days a week and am consistently under the calorie count without including workout calories burnt. It's been very discouraging and I want to find out what's holding me back before I give up.

phentermine?

I am a 22 yr, 5ft 5in, 1170 CW with a goal of around 130-145. I have always been chubby my entire life, and really want to lose the 30 pounds I have gained as a result of that solid college life, pandemic, and sprinkle of depression. I most likely have PCOS, as other women in my family have it. I went to a weight loss clinic and was prescribed phentermine. As someone in the medical profession, I have done the healthy lifestyle before, but it never stuck because it came from a place of self hatred and parental pressure. I started taking half a 37.5 dose for 4 days now and have noticed a huge decreases in appetite, but feel winded frequently and have had issues with sweating and trouble sleeping.

I am consuming sub 1200 calories easily, and I meet twice a week with a trainer to workout and lift, as well as walk lots and eat most non-processed foods. I have only lost 1 pound am a worried that either my metabolism is shot or I need to cut more food out, which is pretty impossible. How can I , while using phentermine lose the most weight and not ruin my metabolism? Should I even continue taking it? I am honestly a bit clueless and any advice or personal anecdotes would be great.

Calorie deficit

19F Height: 5’4 Current weight: 202 lbs Goal weight: 150 lbs I’m 202lbs and 5’4 Slightly active like housework and I go for short walks maybe 1-3 times a week. My calorie deficit is 1500 calories. Does this seem too low? I feel like I’m still hungry a lot. Idk if it’s bc I used to snack all day so now my body just wants snacks all the time. I’ve been keeping my calorie deficit for 5 days now. If I have like 1 cheat day a week where I go slightly over my deficit will that hinder weight loss? Any tips on healthy things to eat that will also keep my full longer? I use my fitness pal and Lose it just to compare apps and lose it gives me 1500 calories but MFP gives me 1800. I’m not sure which one to follow.

I think it’s finally starting to hit me...

5,5 16F SW: 176lbs CW:152lbs GW: 140lbs

Hey again guys!

As some of you may know I’ve been quite active on this community for a while now. It’s been a crazy journey since I started losing weight at the end of October last year. I’ve lost 24 pounds since then, but I’ve been pretty vocal on here about how I have barely seen a change in myself physically aside from my face looking slimmer. Today I had lost a pound and looked in the mirror and I thought my stomach was actually looking a little slimmer. Anyways, I had bought some new jeans for my self as a nice treat (I don’t want to buy loads of new clothes as I’m losing weight they are gonna end up being too big so it’s a waste of money) and they are UK 12, a US 8 I think? So I wore these jeans and I bought them when I was 153 pounds and they fit perfect, like not too big not too small they fit just right. I just got home and I’ve ate so I’m bloated but I’ve noticed that these jeans are like a bit loser. Lose enough that I can fit a few of my fingers in there, and that was all in 1 pound????? Plus I was bloated at this time. Anyways, the point is I think I’m at that time where weight loss is getting way more noticeable and I’m gonna lose more dress sizes now that I’m only 2 pounds away from a healthy bmi. For those who don’t know what the paper towel effect, it’s basically where weight-loss becomes way more visible when you get closer to your goal weight, like at the end of a paper towel, the last few sheets make it look much smaller, same goes for weight-loss. I don’t really know why I’m posting about this but I think it’s insane that each pound seems to be making such a difference already. I’ve also seem to have lost another inch around my waist within like 1-2 pounds? I’m so excited but also kinda overwhelmed! Hope this was encouraging for those who haven’t seen much change yet even after losing a lot of weight.
