Why and how I lost weight with Paleo but will never to do it again!

I am sorry for the clickbaity title.

I am f(33, 5'7", 215 lbs). Just sharing my own experience. It may not be everyone else's. There is obviously no one size fits all for health and fitness.

Bit of ( what I think is ) relevant backstory:

Fall of 2013:

I was an overweight 25 year old ( was 170 lbs at 5'7") trying to lose some weight through exercise, rookie mistake I know. My boyfriend and I liked exploring new places to eat and I was gaining steady weight.

By year end, I was up to 185 lbs and my boyfriend moved to USA. I was alone in my home country and LDR is tough. I stopped exercising and leaned on food for comfort :(

Summer of 2014:

I finally moved to USA to be with my boyfriend. I was ecstatic but I had reached 200 lbs by then. I read a book about CICO and was convinced I had to eat 1400 to lose weight. In theory that's true but it's not easy to do without changing eating habits. I was still eating out all the time , snacking on chips, cookies, brownies.

When you eat like that , 1400 calories look so little. I stuck to it but was hungry and miserable all the time. I lost 15 lbs in about 4 months.

Then life hit me with a ton of bricks. I lost a family member. I was devastated and crying all the time. I stopped calorie counting.

Winter of 2015:

I had gained almost all my weight back and then some . I was also getting married to my boyfriend. I tried CICO again and had a small weight loss again.

I stopped after my wedding. I wanted to enjoy my newly wedded bliss. And I did. I was happy and content. But also Obese . I didn't realize until the photos from our Anniversary trip jolted me awake . I weighed myself. I was 215 lbs.

New Year 2017:

I didn't want to get back to CICO because that made me miserable and obsessed with calories and my scale. I discoved Paleo. I was Paleo for most of 2017. I lost a ton of weight and I actually felt healthier. I wasn't hungry ,I didn't have constant headaches.I reached 180 lbs. I was feeling pretty good.

But Paleo is very restrictive. No grains , no dairy, no legumes or lentils,no alcohol. It's difficult to have a social life . Also as someone whose culture has a lot of rice and lentils , I missed my homemade traditional food. I also didn't like the amount of meat I was having.

Inspite of all this , I stuck to atleast a loose definition of Paleo when I could. But I was eating too much of healthy stuff and weight started creeping back. Very slowly.

By the end of 2019 I was almost 200 lbs

Then came 2020 and the pandemic. I was stuck at home. I again went back to food for comfort. I gained 29 pounds between March 2020 to June 2021.

That brings me to my latest stint with weight loss.

I decided on not doing Paleo. But 3 years of following it had altered my eating habits for good and I am finding it easy to eat at a deficit . I eat everything but most of the time it's veggies and some protein. I have also learnt to love a lot of low calorie swaps. Cauliflower rice and zoodles are my friends now :). I still eat whatever is offered at social events but in moderation. Eating adequate fiber, protein and healthy fats really helps with satiety.

I have lost about ~15 lbs in two months!

I will never go back to Paleo but I am thankful to it for teaching me these healthy eating habits.

I think the moral of this long , rambling post is that while calorie is a calorie, getting those calories from healthy sources makes CICO sustainable.

I am hoping it will stick this time!

7 Mouthwatering Ways to Enjoy Watermelon

Watermelon is so sweet, juicy, and refreshing on hot summer days you almost forget how nutritious it is. But like other SmartCarbs, watermelon is packed with vitamins, fiber, and other key nutrients, yet it’s low in calories.

watermelonThe sticky red flesh is 92 percent fluid, so eating watermelon helps you stay hydrated. The color comes from lycopene, a nutrient also found in tomatoes and pink grapefruit that may help prevent heart disease and certain cancers. A cup of watermelon also provides 15 percent of your RDA for vitamin A and 12 percent of vitamin C, and it’s a healthy source of potassium, a mineral essential for healthy metabolism. While a cup of watermelon has just 40 calories, its high sugar content means that if you’re on a Nutrisystem weight loss plan you should limit yourself to one cup per day. Eating slices of watermelon on the porch as the sun goes down is one of the most fun ways to savor summer, but here are seven other delicious ideas for enjoying watermelon this season.

1. Salad:

Caprese salad is a summertime classic made with tomatoes, basil and fresh mozzarella. For a delicious variation, substitute watermelon, arugula and feta cheese, to make a sweet and spicy side dish. Here’s a recipe for a similar (and delicious!) salad! >

2. Grilled:

Thick slabs of watermelon can take the heat of the grill, which caramelizes the natural sugars and makes the fruit even tastier. Cut the pieces at least a half-inch thick, brush lightly with olive oil, and add a pinch of salt and pepper to each. Grill for a minute on each side, then serve warm with a dab of chevre (or other soft) cheese, a slice of prosciutto (if desired), and a sprig of basil.

3. Stir-fry:

Slice watermelon flesh into sticks about two inches long and wide. After stir-frying beef or shrimp, sugar snap peas, onions, and ginger turn off the heat and then mix in the watermelon to give the dish a sweet flavor.

4. Jerky:

Watermelon dried in strips—like jerky—is a tasty and convenient snack. To make your own, cut fruit into six- to eight-inch strips that are at least a half-inch thick. If you have a food dehydrator, dry the jerky for about eight hours. Or you can spread the strips out on a lightly oiled baking sheet and put it in your oven at about 200 degrees F for about 12 hours.

5. Skewers:

Make a delicious snack or dessert on a skewer with fresh watermelon, cantaloupe and honeydew. Use a melon baller to scoop out each fruit, then slide six balls onto a wooden skewer, alternating types of fruit.

6. Popsicles:

Watermelon becomes an even more refreshing treat on a sweltering day when you chill it in the freezer. Simply puree watermelon chunks (with the seeds removed, if there are any) in a blender or food processor. Pour the puree into popsicle containers or into small paper cups with a popsicle stick inserted. Freeze for about four hours. If you used paper cups, peel them away from the popsicle and enjoy.

7. Booze-Free Beverage:

Blend watermelon with a few simple ingredients for a lighter take on a summer spritzer you’ll love. Get the recipe right here! >

Exercise vs. diet when you don’t have that much to lose

This subreddit is supposed to be for people who have a lot or a little weight to lose, either way, so let’s test that out.

You often see people say things like “weight loss happens in the kitchen” and stress the importance of cutting calories, even to shorter women who don’t have that much room in their TDEE to cut anyways.

As a 5’4” woman, I haven’t found that to be true. I’ve tracked my calories, accurately, and at most I only eat like 1600 calories a day max, which is actually within my TDEE. Any type of cutting below 1500 has just give me migraines and not led to weight loss.

What has worked has been getting into a regular exercise routine. It’s not rapid eight loss, but burning 200-300 extra calories is similar to the extra amount I would have to cut, and actually sustainable.

Have any other shorter ladies had this experience?

I lost 5 more kg in this month and 16.2kg in total!

Hi guys!

This is a new update regarding my weight loss journey and I can tell you it was brutal.
While loosing weight I had to fight the urge to eat junk food. There were some moments
where I gave in and put things like Hamburgers or Pizza in my body. However after each Junkfood my gym stairs were waiting happily for me. As for now I lost 16.2 kg in total! I am so happy!! :D :D

My journey is only just beginning. I have to loose more than 20kg to reach my final destination. I hope that my update can help/motivate you to start loosing weight. I don't see myself as someone who is crazy about sports or eating healthy just someone that likes to loose weight.

My stats for now:

height: 185cm

weight: 110.9kg as for now

goal: 88-90kg

Stay safe everyone and thank you for motivating me.

I wish you all only the best and my next update regarding my journey comes next month.

Greetings and stay hydrated ;)

8 month weightloss update - 35lbs

I just realised it'd been a LONG time since my last post showing my weight loss. I won't lie; I have not done any exercise routine. I haven't finally found a love of HIIT or become a 6 am 10k run person. Chances are, I never will. HOWEVER, I have found ways to exercise are not always miserable and that running actually isn't bad, and I am physically capable of a 5k. That's a pretty big change in mindset.

More importantly, though, is the fact today I woke up and saw that I haven't changed at all in 8 months. That sounds terrible, doesn't it? But it's not! I have maintained my weight loss for 3/4 of a year after believing it would never be possible at all. And despite the horrible, horrible year we've had and added stress, it's been easy! The techniques I learned through losing weight really did make maintaining better, I haven't calorie counted at all the last 2 months, and I'm the same weight. I know portions now and how to eat well, and I genuinely understand my hunger cues, from not ever getting them and stuffing my face every chance I could now if I've eaten a huge amount at a restaurant, I'm quite content to eat when I want rather than eating again at the next meal time and being miserable.

Weight loss was simple but not easy, and I don't believe maintenance will always be easy, but it's such a relief to realise that I am capable of it. I'm sure this sounds like an unbelievably irritating, arrogant post, but I started this journey over a year ago now feeling miserable and not thinking anything would change. Then it started to change, and it was WORK, and I was starting to get terrified that when life started back up, and I had to go to work and school, I would just end up back where I was. That I could never eat a pizza again or the work canteen chips would cause a downfall never seen before. So I can happily announce that that hasn't happened and that looking after myself mentally and physically is the best possible thing I could have done to let everything else in my life fall into place.

I really hope everyone out there who's where I was knows that a) it's possible, b) small healthy habits are the key c) maintenance is really weird. It feels like you're eating loads d) please love yourself for everything you do. I know 35lbs wasn't much to lose in the grand scheme of things, but as a petite woman, it SHOWED. I won't lie; I now feel like my body looks like a trash bag filled with water draped over a garden chair, I have no ass, and my boobs have found a home in my armpits. But I don't care; I definitely like how I look more than I did, PLUS I can run for the bus if I need to. I can carry all my groceries home, and my addiction to food = happiness is gone. There was a point in weight loss where I reached my goal and was miserable because I wasn't suddenly perfect, but 8 months on, I feel pretty great.
