Starting to lose hope.

(Marking as NSFW for the subject matter)

I’m 17 years old, 5’7 and weigh 188 lbs. People wouldn’t exactly call me fat, but I’m still a bit overweight and absolutely NOT happy with my body. Never have been.

I’ve looked up all the advice I could get. Tried eating less, eating healthier. Recently I started counting calories. I actually do exercise a lot, but of course it doesn’t do anything since my diet sucks.

The problem is my mom. She doesn’t allow me to get far anywhere. All the food in our house is extremely unhealthy and not good for my weight loss, and she refuses to buy anything that I actually can eat. This often results in me binge eating out of stress, or starving myself for the day.

It doesn’t help that recently my depression has been acting up this past week specifically because of my body. I often think about getting surgery to reduce my weight. I’m always beating myself up, both physically and mentally, because I can’t even stand looking at myself anymore. At one point I’ve considered suicide about it. It’s becoming a big problem because now I’m trying to lose tons of weight in mere weeks, why? ….To impress a friend/crush I haven’t seen in 3 years.

It’s not that I haven’t made progress. It’s that it isn’t enough in the slightest. I used to be a little over 200 lbs, but why even care? Every time I take a shot at losing weight I’m only ever fluctuating between 180 and 200 lbs. The results aren’t visible and I still want to vomit at the sight of myself.

So what do I do? How can I possibly make make progress when my mother’s always trying to inhibit it? I’m running out of options.

weight loss help for new person

I am helping a female friend with her diet and weight loss. She saw me eating recently and asked how I keep a relatively low weight, 92 lbs 5"1'. She knows I dont really count my calories closely and have some sugary drinks but somehow I've been able to keep my weight around 93 consistently minus my pregnancy.

I told her I eat a large 500 calorie bowl of oatmeal mixed in with several kinds of veggies, teaspoon brown sugar, a small scoop of pumpkin pie, and a tablespoon of sweet n sour sauce. I eat out of that 1 bowl throughout the day and make it last breakfast lunch and dinner. Then for my desserts/sweets I have around 400 calories worth of vanilla ensure drink (bad sweet tooth) and try for Mild to moderate exercise depending on my workload. Try that one meal each and every day. Boring but its consistent at least for me and easy to make.

She complains though that my "diet" doesnt work for her and she still is somehow "gaining weight". She is around 5"3' and 135 lbs.

I am not sure.... am I doing something wrong. Why would my diet work for me and not for her. My weight rarely fluctuates with that diet. I've been eating it straight for 4 years with a few treats sprinkled in only couple times a year (quesedillas, pad thai, currey, or cake). Its boring but works for me somehow.

Am I wrong or maybe is she sneaking food in that I dont know about. Thanks

Day 1? Starting your weight loss journey on Thursday, 07 October 2021? Start here!

Today is your Day 1?

Welcome to r/Loseit!

So you aren’t sure of how to start? Don’t worry! “How do I get started?” is our most asked question. r/Loseit has helped our users lose over 1,000,000 recorded pounds and these are the steps that we’ve found most useful for getting started.

Why you’re overweight

Our bodies are amazing (yes, yours too!). In order to survive before supermarkets, we had to be able to store energy to get us through lean times, we store this energy as adipose fat tissue. If you put more energy into your body than it needs, it stores it, for (potential) later use. When you put in less than it needs, it uses the stored energy. The more energy you have stored, the more overweight you are. The trick is to get your body to use the stored energy, which can only be done if you give it less energy than it needs, consistently.

Before You Start

The very first step is calculating your calorie needs. You can do that HERE. This will give you an approximation of your calorie needs for the day. The next step is to figure how quickly you want to lose the fat. One pound of fat is equal to 3500 calories. So to lose 1 pound of fat per week you will need to consume 500 calories less than your TDEE (daily calorie needs from the link above). 750 calories less will result in 1.5 pounds and 1000 calories is an aggressive 2 pounds per week.

Tracking

Here is where it begins to resemble work. The most efficient way to lose the weight you desire is to track your calorie intake. This has gotten much simpler over the years and today it can be done right from your smartphone or computer. r/loseit recommends an app like MyFitnessPal, Loseit! (unaffiliated), or Cronometer. Create an account and be honest with it about your current stats, activities, and goals. This is your tracker and no one else needs to see it so don’t cheat the numbers. You’ll find large user created databases that make logging and tracking your food and drinks easy with just the tap of the screen or the push of a button. We also highly recommend the use of a digital kitchen scale for accuracy. Knowing how much of what you're eating is more important than what you're eating. Why? This may explain it.

Creating Your Deficit

How do you create a deficit? This is up to you. r/loseit has a few recommendations but ultimately that decision is yours. There is no perfect diet for everyone. There is a perfect diet for you and you can create it. You can eat less of exactly what you eat now. If you like pizza you can have pizza. Have 2 slices instead of 4. You can try lower calorie replacements for calorie dense foods. Some of the communities favorites are cauliflower rice, zucchini noodles, spaghetti squash in place of their more calorie rich cousins. If it appeals to you an entire dietary change like Keto, Paleo, Vegetarian.

The most important thing to remember is that this selection of foods works for you. Sustainability is the key to long term weight management success. If you hate what you’re eating you won’t stick to it.

Exercise

Is NOT mandatory. You can lose fat and create a deficit through diet alone. There is no requirement of exercise to lose weight.

It has it’s own benefits though. You will burn extra calories. Exercise is shown to be beneficial to mental health and creates an endorphin rush as well. It makes people feel *awesome* and has been linked to higher rates of long term success when physical activity is included in lifestyle changes.

Crawl, Walk, Run

It can seem like one needs to make a 180 degree course correction to find success. That isn’t necessarily true. Many of our users find that creating small initial changes that build a foundation allows them to progress forward in even, sustained, increments.

Acceptance

You will struggle. We have all struggled. This is natural. There is no tip or trick to get through this though. We encourage you to recognize why you are struggling and forgive yourself for whatever reason that may be. If you overindulged at your last meal that is ok. You can resolve to make the next meal better.

Do not let the pursuit of perfect get in the way of progress. We don’t need perfect. We just want better.

Emotional response to a normal weight comment

Hey all. 26F.

I used to weigh 350, got down to 225, and now I’m back at 285. Obviously I’m not happy about it and I’ve been in a bit of a rut. My mom has always been supportive and kind to me until today, I was telling her that I was struggling with my weight loss again, and she said “well, it’s your responsibility. Only you can do something about it.”

I don’t know why that comment made me feel super sad, I honestly felt hurt and sad. Maybe because it’s the truth? But I genuinely don’t know why I’ve fallen so far off the wagon and I guess it hurt to hear that.

I understand that I can choose to be pitiful or powerful, and it that moment I guess I was pitiful and she was over it. Idk. I’m overthinking it but I just feel sad right now.

If you don’t realize your weight loss, take a bath!!

Not calling you dirty. Hear me out.

SW 306 in Feb. CW 242 GW under 200. Trying to figure it out. Haven’t been under 200 in 16 years.

I love taking baths! We have a deeper soaker tub. Not a fancy free standing one and not the old metal ones that are only a foot deep.

I have a height I always knew to draw the water to to be able to go in and be fully submersed. When I was at my highest it would be 1/2”-1” below the top line. And I even spun my top drain spout around to let me be fully submersed without it draining on me. But even then at my top weight it would be draining from the top.

Today I took a bath. Ran it to the same level I normally would. And when I was all in with my knees crossed. It was over 4” below the top of the ledge! Don’t know why but it felt amazing. I know I’m losing the weight but sometimes don’t really notice it.

If you’re not feeling the difference in your weight loss and I’m not all the time. If you’re not doing the measuring of all your body parts. Take a bath!!!

(M) How losing 86lbs has influenced and changed my life!

I ended highschool as an 18yo 6'2 330lb football player. After that I fell into a binge eating depression. I would sit around work at the fast food restaurant I was in and eat because it is all I knew. I was self conscious, depressed and just tired of the non stop self pity I had for myself which has no good rewards when you want to find a girlfriend at some point. I changed, I woke up one day after a year of constant eating and working my way up to 382lbs. I had taken a gap year from school and was starting college next fall. I started my weight loss journey in May 2019. I cut soda out of my diet which corresponded to the first 20lbs lost. Then it was the other unnecessary calories, less mayo on a sandwich, cut out some more carbs, increase protein. Eat until satisfied not until I was completely bloated and felt like I had a thanksgiving meal and needed to loosen my belt. I took baby steps into my weight loss journey learning upon the way what things could help me continue losing. I carried on these baby steps implementing walks or occasional visits to the gym for added exercise which was much needed in my very inactive days. I hit bumps in the road and I feel a lot of people do when on a large weightloss journey. Constant plateaus in weight loss that meant I needed to change things again. I haven't been as consistent as I used to be while I fluctuate between 295lbs-315lbs. Even said anything lighter than I used to be is better in my eyes. 2 years after starting this journey I am now 6'4.5(yeah idk how I grew a few inches after high school but it happened) 296lbs and working towards my end goal of 235lbs. I found more motivation recently and have been hitting the gym more than I used to. The idea of weightloss might be intimidating but once I realized that I was just living life under a rock and understood that what I did was excessive it has made things so much easier. I've learned so much across these 2 years that I am excited and motivated to push for that end goal.

Cheers fellow redditors.

How did you figure out what exercises and diets were for you?

Hey friends,

I hope this is the right subreddit to post this...I'm wondering how y'all started your weight loss? I don't mean like what made you want to start or what broke the camel's back but like how did you figure out what exercises to do and what diet and foods would work for you? What was your first step? Did you just search for the exercises that'd best fit you, the foods that would stick best with your diet, or just everything one at a time and see what worked? I'm trying to start exercising but I don't even know where to start I only know the basic stretches from elementary.

I'm 5'2" 160lb if anyone has the same proportions and could suggest anything specific. Any help or support is appreciated! Thanks :)
