Spiraling out of my mind - what's really healthy and what isn't?

Am I the only one who keeps flip flopping with diets because I'm trying to figure out what's the healthiest way to lose weight? So far, I've been keto dieting and I am 21 pounds down, balanced my insulin hormone (have pcos), but have been stalled for about 2 months now. I have 30 more pounds to lose, and mostly eat meats, avocado, protein shakes, and nuts. However, I greatly miss fruits, rice cakes, rice, sweet potato, etc. I have heard that more plants is better overall for the human body, but honestly I am part of both the vegan and keto subreddits and both groups seem to hate each other. It seems the only thing most diets agree on is to eliminate artificial sugar, and I agree. I just want to be healthy, lose weight, have balanced hormones, and not spiral out of control with mounds of nutrition information. End of rant, thanks for reading all.

If you have a favorite wellness/weight loss youtuber, please comment below. I love YouTube, but again, there's so much content out there that it's easy to get lost.

Looking pregnant

I’m 24F and have gained ~30 pounds during the past 2 years. I’m up to 157 lbs which is my highest weight ever. Problem is, my body carries weight horribly. It mostly all goes to my stomach? And I didn’t realize how big my stomach had gotten until the IT guy at my job confidently asked me “how far along are you?” before realizing I wasn’t pregnant and playing it off as a joke. Now lately I feel so self-conscious any time I’m in public, and usually wear long pants and sleeves to hide my body, but my stomach is always still noticeable. It’s so embarrassing and I’m trying to start losing weight to fix it, but my emotional eating got worse during Covid and it’s really hard to stop when eating is a big source of happiness some days. Does anyone else deal with this kind of weight distribution? On a more positive note, I’m excited to start my weight loss journey!

I’m not obese anymore! No calorie counting required

F/38, 5’-7”, SW 224 in May, hit 190 today, making my BMI 29.9 for the first time in a decade.

This post is a celebration of something I can’t share publicly IRL because I wouldn’t admit to others that I was “obese” in the first place. The shame of that label has been heavier than my body ever was.

What really helped me was having a specific non weight goal (indeed I’ve never actually set a goal weight) and changing my mindset. This is not a diet, it’s my diet, for good. There is no end date, because when my body decides it’s at the weight my diet supports, that’s when I’m finished losing but the changes in my habits will continue. Because my real goal has been reducing my blood sugar, I tested glucose several times a day for a few weeks to determine what carb levels I could eat, landing at 70-100 carbs per day, plus an average of 60 minutes of exercise per day. I’ve not counted calories at all, and only counted carbs for the first month, though I’m open to checking in on that periodically if my glucose ever starts to creep up again. I allow myself to splurge a couple of times a week but want to be clear that’s neither a cheat (it’s totally allowed! And I think necessary for my mental health), nor a binge—it just means if I’m out with a friend and we’re somewhere known for their pastries, I’ll order the damn pastry and enjoy the heck out of it. Nothing is off limits, it’s just scaled to its proper frequency.

This all sounds so obvious typing it out, but it’s taken me so long to get here. I explained it to my husband this way: is hiking good for me? What about strength training? Eating cauliflower instead of bread, or pomegranates instead of ice cream? Ok, so if I woke up tomorrow and I was the perfect weight, whatever you think that means, should I stop doing those things and eat a pie, because I’m done right? No? Ok, what about from the other direction… if I did all these things that we agree are healthy, but they don’t lead to weight loss, should I stop doing them because they’re “not working,” so I may as well treat my body like crap? Also no. So this is for good then. No quitting

Having trouble eating healthy without cooking

Hi All, I'm a 6'1 ~240lb male. I lost around 70 lbs in 2019 (275-205), and have gained a lot back during the pandemic because of stress, lack of activity etc. I had planned to get back on the weight loss journey this summer/ fall, but I just started a Masters program and I'm having a tough time balancing my life, in general and in terms of taking care of my health. I work full-time at a pretty intense job and am going to school part-time, so I have very little time for exercise and cooking. I'm hoping to find ways to eat healthy and varied foods, while not doing a lot of cooking, but so far have defaulted to all my "favorites" when it comes to takeout and delivery. I'm eating tons of burritos, pizza, wings, essentially all of the high fat meats and cheeses, and not getting a lot of veggies, fruites, fiber etc.

I'm just wondering if anyone has any "hacks" or strategies they use when they just don't have time to cook for themselves but still want to keep it healthy and continue losing weight? When I cook, I cook really healthy. I tend to use chicken or a non-meat protein as a base, and then I love cooking things like zucchini, eggplant, carrots, peppers, sweet potato, broccoli and cauliflower etc in various sauces or roasted. But, when I'm not cooking I'm making the worst decisions ever. Now, I'm in a cycle of overeating every night, feeling full most of every day and so not eating that much, then getting really hungry again at night and bingeing.

Any advice would be super helpful!

holy crap I’m down 80 pounds and hit my goal weight

Today, I hit 120 pounds (54.5 kilograms). And close to my 16th birthday too, woohoo! That’s 80lbs (36.3kg) down from my starting weight of 200lbs (90.7kg) back in January 2021 and the lower part of my goal range of 120-125lbs. I’m aware that weight fluctuates, which is why I went with a range instead of just one number. Now my goal is maintenance… which feels weird to think about. I’ve been overweight/obese since elementary school, so the fact that I no longer need to lose weight is new to me. Not complaining though!

Portion control was always what I struggled the most. I loved food… just a little too much. Doctors told me to just cut out sugary drinks and sauces/dressings to lose weight - but I hated sugary drinks and always liked everything plain. I was confused until I realized just how much I was eating before. Also realized that a daily heaping peanut butter and jelly sandwich with a devil dog might not be the healthiest lunch. Had to work on my habit of snacking out of boredom as well. Now, I’m satisfied with smaller portions and less snacking! If I want a snack, I reach for something like fruit instead. I’ve also found out I like to cook and bake, so that’s helped with portion control and keeping meals healthier + interesting. I try to add vegetables to each meal. Food can be relatively healthy and tasty!

Ever since going back to school, I’ve had at least 5 people comment on my weight loss. Others have noticed too. Feels good but wow those conversations can get awkward fast.

Honestly the only downside is that absolutely nothing in my closet fits anymore. I had been borrowing some of my mom’s old clothes… until those got too big as well. But hey, that means it’s time to go clothes shopping!

also quick thanks to this subreddit, you guys are amazing! I posted here a couple times before moving to this account, and I might not have started trying to lose weight if I didn’t find this. Or if I did, I might have gone about it in an unhealthier way. So, thanks for being a helpful, supportive community!

Fighting your brain/thoughts

I’ve been losing weight in a healthy, gradual, sustained way. I’m down about 40 pounds since April. I’ve gone off the rails a few times, but have been able to redirect myself back to what I was doing and it wasn’t complete “I’ve effed it up so may as well quit” moments. I think I’m the most proud of that actually. But…

I do however have a history of not so healthy weight loss and oftentimes extreme calorie reduction or an insane unsustainable exercise regime. I’m aware of this and actively work against it.

I find myself sometimes thinking “this thing is happening in X weeks, I bet I could lose Y amount of weight by then.” It is almost always something totally unrealistic (like 5 pounds/week), but even if it is something kind of realistic like I’ve been losing at a consistent 1.5 pounds a week and to achieve whatever arbitrary goal I’d have to lose 2 pounds/week. It’s like the INSTANT (even if it’s super brief) the thought crosses my mind my brain is like “guess what….now you’re starving 100% of the time”. So that relatively ‘easy’ to maintain 1.5 pounds a week that I’ve been successful at becomes super duper ridiculously hard.

I wish I could stop my brain from having those thoughts, but I was curious if anyone else has that struggle sometimes and what you might do to help yourself through it.

5 Fun Fall Activities to Burn Major Calories

Cooler weather and outdoor activities are part of what make fall fantastic. But this can also be a great opportunity to up the ante on your calorie burning potential. Getting outside and moving more automatically puts you at a major advantage to sitting indoors in front of a computer or TV. After all, being sedentary is one of the biggest downfalls to healthy living. But when you add in some fun fall activities to help keep you on your feet and moving around, you can really make a difference in your health.

Don’t let those beautiful and crisp fall days slip away without spending some time outside! We’ve rounded up some of the fall activities that are not only fun to do but can help you get fit in the process.

Here are five fun fall activities to help you get fit this autumn season:

1. Go Pumpkin Picking

fall activities

Nothing is more quintessentially “fall” than visiting a pumpkin patch and picking out that perfect pumpkin. But this fun activity can also burn calories. Squatting to pick the pumpkin up and carrying it around helps build muscle mass. And the more you hike around the patch—particularly while holding a heavy pumpkin—the more calories you’ll blast. So, take your time and enjoy that fresh autumn air. You’ll make memories and contribute to a healthier lifestyle, too.

2. Pick Apples, Too!

apple picking

Similar to pumpkin picking, walking around an orchard and reaching up to pick apples can also burn calories. Reach, stretch, twist and pick! It’s like a yoga sequence. Again, the more time you spend walking around (and on your feet), the more calories you’ll torch. Plus, think of all the healthy apple snacks you’ll be able to make—helping with your plan to eat better, too. Apples are a superfood which are fat, sodium and cholesterol free, plus they’re high in vitamin C and fiber.

3. Get Lost in a Corn Maze

fall activities

Getting lost on purpose is not something we’re accustomed to when we have navigation apps at our fingertips these days! But chasing your kids—or maybe your date—through a corn maze is another way to take in some fall fun while burning calories. You’ll easily get in your daily steps if you choose a tough maze and you’ll have found a fun way to do it! Maybe make it an ongoing activity by trying out some different mazes in your area and determining which you like best.

 4. Do Some Fall Foliage Hikes

fall activities

If the fall foliage is one of your favorite aspects of the season, then plan some solo or family hikes to truly take it all in. You’ll certainly get in plenty of steps and if you choose a more challenging terrain, you’ll blast away even more calories. Look for hikes that include some areas of incline to build and define those leg muscles. The cooler and crisp autumn air often makes it less taxing to go long distances. Plus, you’ll be able to fully take in all of nature’s beauty as you go. It’s a great way to spend a weekend day.

5. Rake the Leaves

fall activities

So, it’s not exactly fun, but if you have a lot of trees on your property, raking needs to get done and it just so happens that it’s a killer arm and core workout! In general, getting outside and performing some fall yard cleanup is a great calorie-torching activity. According to Harvard Health Publishing, raking the lawn can burn around 149 calories in a 155-pound person. It has the benefit of not only keeping your body in top shape but your lawn, too! If you truly want to summon your inner child and make this activity more fun, take some running jumps into your leaf piles before hauling them away.
