Huel - Does anyone have any experiences?

I am sorry if this is not the right place for this - I am very new! Please let me know if there is another place.

I (F, 20s, UK) have recently been seeing a lot of adverts for Huel, a powder which you blend into a drink that is 'intended to provide all of the body's nutritional needs'. The reviews all seem very positive, apart from the odd one saying that it tastes of chalk.

I was just wondering if anyone has any experience with Huel at all, especially in relation to weight loss? I am starting a new job in a big city soon, and am worried about sabotaging weight loss efforts with lack of time/a long commute/a stressful new environment. If I run out of time in the morning, there is a shop near where I will work that sells a bacon sandwich and hot drink for only £2.45, which I may well be tempted by.... I'm thinking that having a drink already blended and ready to go might help to prevent that.

The idea of having a whole meal in a drink does seem really appealing. And I have heard reports that it can help you lose weight, as it is nutritionally rounded enough to curb hunger/cravings/etc. If anyone has any experience with it, I would love to know.

(It goes without saying that my lunch/dinner would be nutritious, full meals - I have no interest in giving up food completely any time soon! This is literally just for convenience sake).

TLDR: I am starting a new job soon in a big city, and will have very little time for breakfast. I am considering 'Huel', and wondered if anyone had any experiences with it?

I had a shift in my mindset today...

So I go out to eat A LOT. My social and work life seems to revolve around “let’s grab lunch” or “let’s meet up for dinner”. I had got myself into a mindset of “I’m out for food..this is a treat..I can order whatever I want”. Which has been so detrimental to my weight loss. Sure it’s great to go out and order what you want if you’re only going out AS A TREAT like once a month etc. But I had this epiphany that if I want to continue to enjoy my social life and go out for food as much as I am I need to start making much better choices.

Just thought I’d share in case anyone else has experienced similar!

Day 1? Starting your weight loss journey on Sunday, 27 January 2019? Start here!

Today is your Day 1?

Welcome to r/Loseit!

So you aren’t sure of how to start? Don’t worry! “How do I get started?” is our most asked question. r/Loseit has helped our users lose over 1,000,000 recorded pounds and these are the steps that we’ve found most useful for getting started.

Why you’re overweight

Our bodies are amazing (yes, yours too!). In order to survive before supermarkets, we had to be able to store energy to get us through lean times, we store this energy as adipose fat tissue. If you put more energy into your body than it needs, it stores it, for (potential) later use. When you put in less than it needs, it uses the stored energy. The more energy you have stored, the more overweight you are. The trick is to get your body to use the stored energy, which can only be done if you give it less energy than it needs, consistently.

Before You Start

The very first step is calculating your calorie needs. You can do that HERE. This will give you an approximation of your calorie needs for the day. The next step is to figure how quickly you want to lose the fat. One pound of fat is equal to 3500 calories. So to lose 1 pound of fat per week you will need to consume 500 calories less than your TDEE (daily calorie needs from the link above). 750 calories less will result in 1.5 pounds and 1000 calories is an aggressive 2 pounds per week.

Tracking

Here is where it begins to resemble work. The most efficient way to lose the weight you desire is to track your calorie intake. This has gotten much simpler over the years and today it can be done right from your smartphone or computer. r/loseit recommends an app like MyFitnessPal, Loseit! (unaffiliated), or Cronometer. Create an account and be honest with it about your current stats, activities, and goals. This is your tracker and no one else needs to see it so don’t cheat the numbers. You’ll find large user created databases that make logging and tracking your food and drinks easy with just the tap of the screen or the push of a button. We also highly recommend the use of a digital kitchen scale for accuracy. Knowing how much of what you're eating is more important than what you're eating. Why? This may explain it.

Creating Your Deficit

How do you create a deficit? This is up to you. r/loseit has a few recommendations but ultimately that decision is yours. There is no perfect diet for everyone. There is a perfect diet for you and you can create it. You can eat less of exactly what you eat now. If you like pizza you can have pizza. Have 2 slices instead of 4. You can try lower calorie replacements for calorie dense foods. Some of the communities favorites are cauliflower rice, zucchini noodles, spaghetti squash in place of their more calorie rich cousins. If it appeals to you an entire dietary change like Keto, Paleo, Vegetarian.

The most important thing to remember is that this selection of foods works for you. Sustainability is the key to long term weight management success. If you hate what you’re eating you won’t stick to it.

Exercise

Is NOT mandatory. You can lose fat and create a deficit through diet alone. There is no requirement of exercise to lose weight.

It has it’s own benefits though. You will burn extra calories. Exercise is shown to be beneficial to mental health and creates an endorphin rush as well. It makes people feel awesome and has been linked to higher rates of long term success when physical activity is included in lifestyle changes.

Crawl, Walk, Run

It can seem like one needs to make a 180 degree course correction to find success. That isn’t necessarily true. Many of our users find that creating small initial changes that build a foundation allows them to progress forward in even, sustained, increments.

Acceptance

You will struggle. We have all struggled. This is natural. There is no tip or trick to get through this though. We encourage you to recognize why you are struggling and forgive yourself for whatever reason that may be. If you overindulged at your last meal that is ok. You can resolve to make the next meal better.

Do not let the pursuit of perfect get in the way of progress. We don’t need perfect. We just want better.

Additional resources

Now you’re ready to do this. Here are more details, that may help you refine your plan.

Blood sugar had gotten high and into what my doctor says is the pre diabetic category. Even though I’m losing weight and eating healthier? I’m confused?

Been on my weight loss journey for little over a month. Before starting I weighed 440lbs. I’ve gotten myself down to 425lbs. I use my fitness pal and have replaced some of my side dishes with veggies. I don’t eat fruit. I quit regular soda and only drink diet or water. At 440 my sugars were 90 (5 on my machine measuring in Canada lol) and have since gone up to 180 (10). My doctor says I’m now prediabetic and is worried. I have PCOS however I’ve never had this issue until now. I actually used to severely low blood sugars even at my high weight which made no sense. I’m now feeling dizzy sweaty thirsty... I’m so discouraged. Please excuse if my conversion is wrong I had to use a google converter because what my machine measures is different than what I see on Reddit.

Help - How do you deal with weight loss while on your period?

Sorry for being so up front with the issue, but I'm at my wits end. I am 5'3" (around 230 lbs currently, but I'm also bloated to heck) and eat 1600-1800 calories a day, and spent the last year working on my mental health so I can go about my weight loss in a healthier way (mentally) this time. I've conquered almost everything.. except my periods.

TMI incoming!

My periods are regular and all that, but they're harsh. I spend about two days practically bedridden from the pain per month on average. I'm talking full on fetal position ugly crying pain. When I'm not in that much pain, I get what my husband and I call "period brain." I basically lose the ability to think on any meaningful level. Birth control has only made this worse in the past, among other details I'll save you from, so that's not a good option for me. The most I have is CBD, pain killers, a heating pad, and my husband's support.

End TMI!

During my period I eat 1900-3000 calories on my worst days. Between the pain and my period brain, I lose all complex thought and self control. I don't even enjoy eating that much normally! I go from being full on an apple and a serving of raisins (I'm a nibbler at heart, I love snacking so I make all my meals smaller and have more of them) to eating four slices of pizza and two brats.

How can I stop nullifying and undoing my progress? Does anyone have anything that's helped them? For those who also have harsh periods, what's helped you? I'm grasping at straws on this topic, and don't know where else to go for help.

MFP gives me far different calorie goal difference than FitBit

If I’m posting this incorrectly, please let me know. This is my first time posting here.

I’m very new to making a conscious effort to weight loss. I’ve been trying to do a lot of reading online, but there’s so much information out there that it’s getting a bit overwhelming and discouraging.

I’m a 5’8 212 lb male. I want to get to around 180 pounds if I can.

MFP calculates me daily calorie intake to be about 2200 while Fitbit asks for around 1500. Both same goal for a pound a week, same activity level, etc. It seems like a big difference to me. If you have any experience at all with CICO tracking, I’d love to talk to you.
