Tattoos and weight loss

I have been debating getting a tattoo for a very long time, and have also been overweight for all of that time too. I have repeatedly told myself that I would get a tattoo when I am 'thinner' but I have never really got that much thinner, and not getting it feels like a kind of punishment to myself for not being thin. So I am thinking of just going ahead of getting it in the new year. I wouldn't be the only fat person with a tattoo.

But! I do worry about if ever manage to lose the weight, and what affect it would have on the tattoo. Can anyone share any stories and pictures of their own tattoos from their weight loss journey, and what impact it had on them?

Aiding Weight loss by finding natural and healthier alternatives to refined sugar, especially useful in the festive season

I'm really careful with my sugar intake as not only do my family have a history with diabetes, but I recognise its importance in my health and weight. In recent years, I've spent time trying to find natural substitutes for refined sugar, including doing research for the benefits of each alternative. I wanted to share some I've found to be the best both for taste and nutrition, something I hope can help people in their own weight loss journey and living a healthier lifestyle.

Here's a video version, though I've added a summary below for those who prefer to read: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IyqB3auF5pk

We all know that processed sugar is not only unhealthy, but contains little to no nutritional value in our diets. Therefore, as many people aim to reduce the sugar intake, we look at 5 alternatives to sugar in your diet...

1. Birch Sugar

- Birch Sugar, also called Xylitol, is a sugar alcohol which is used as a sugar substitute

- It is a natural constituent of some vegetables and fruits such as cauliflower, berries and plums, though birch sugar is most often produced from corn cobs these days

- Birch sugar has about 40% less calories than refined sugar and does not cause your blood sugar level to rise as high after eating

- In addition, birch sugar doesn’t cause cavities and as a substitute has the same sweetness as regular processed sugar

2. Honey

- A personal favourite of mine is just natural honey as a substitute for sugar

- Honey contains a lot of valuable nutrients and is considered one of the the oldest sweeteners in the world, as bees break down flower nectar into simple sugar

- Honey has numerous health properties and has long been used as a healing agent in natural medicine, as it has anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antiseptic properties and when paired with ginger, can be used to fight colds

3. Jaggery

- Jaggery is an unrefined sugar product made in Asia and Africa and is sometimes referred to as a "non-centrifugal sugar," because it's not spun during processing to remove the nutritious molasses

- This makes it more nutritious than refined sugar as jaggery may also contain small amounts of B vitamins and minerals, including calcium, zinc, phosphorus and copper

- However, it's worth noting that while jaggery is more nutritious than refined sugar, it still has a relatively high calorific content, meaning that other substitutes can offer a healthier alternative

4. Stevia

- Steviol glycoside, or Stevia as it's commonly known, is a sugar substitute that is extracted from the South American plant species stevia rebaundiana

- It has been an approved food additive in the EU since 2011 and was actually previously known as a bath additive

- Stevia has no calories and does not damage the teeth, and additionally has no effect on your blood sugar level, so stevia can also be used by diabetics

- However, it's worth having a sample taste of Stevia before using it, as it can come with a slight bitterness

5. Coconut Sugar

- Coconut sugar is a substitute is made from the nectar of the flower buds of the coconut palm and tastes a lot like caramel

- Coconut sugar is said to contain many vitamins and minerals, including magnesium, iron and zinc and its sweetness is comparable to ordinary granulated sugar

- It's extracted by hand so can often come at a premium price, being considered a luxury item, but one which can be an excellent substitute to refined sugar

- However, it is quite a pure form of sugar, and so should be used in moderation from sufferers of Type 2 Diabetes

I’ve really gotta take weight loss serious...

Little long...

I’ve been overweight since I was around 14. Part of it is due to my PCOS, but I’ve struggled with eating and portions. (I’m from and live in Mississippi.)

I’ve tried so many diets. Keto has been the only thing that was super effective but the 60lbs I lost in the 7 months I was on it came back in 2 months after I had my gallbladder removed and I switched jobs as well.

I was going to try to do WLS, but apparently MS Medicaid is one of the two states in the US that won’t cover it. (Montana is the other state, fyi.)

I’ve been having high blood pressure and my HR suddenly increased the last couple months. I had an echo and stress test done and thankfully they came back okay. I also had my PCP run yearly bloodwork and she also checked my vitamins to see if I had any deficiency. My cholesterol is all high. My potassium has gone up, likely due to taking lisinopril. But I apparently have a severe vitamin D deficiency which would explain a lot honestly. My depression and anxiety have been really bad lately. Also the blood pressure increase and my body just feeling like shit...it makes sense. So I’m on some hefty vitamins D3 to bring it up.

But all of this recently has made me realize despite how hard it will be for me to even lose weight, I’ve got to make changes. I’m 5’2” and was 258.8 the other day at the doctors office. I’m hoping some new medication and the vitamin D3 will help pull me out of such a negative space and stop feeling so worthless. (This is a chronic problem with me since childhood btw.)

I don’t know what I’m going to do honestly. I still want to pursue WLS, but it may have to wait till we move to another state next year. Until then I’ve still gotta make changes so I don’t get any worse. Counting calories stresses me, but I did redownload MFP and try to do my best to keep up with it. I’ve already cut out sweets thanks to lisinopril changing my tastes buds. (I only want salty or spicy.) Portions are my biggest fallback. Living in a southern state and my grandmother living with us and cooking...she makes comments and acts offended if you don’t eat a lot. (Like last night with fried catfish...I had two and she seemingly got annoyed I didn’t have more...)

So...is there is a discord for weight loss...?

Day 1? Starting your weight loss journey on Saturday, 21 December 2019? Start here!

Today is your Day 1?

Welcome to r/Loseit!

So you aren’t sure of how to start? Don’t worry! “How do I get started?” is our most asked question. r/Loseit has helped our users lose over 1,000,000 recorded pounds and these are the steps that we’ve found most useful for getting started.

Why you’re overweight

Our bodies are amazing (yes, yours too!). In order to survive before supermarkets, we had to be able to store energy to get us through lean times, we store this energy as adipose fat tissue. If you put more energy into your body than it needs, it stores it, for (potential) later use. When you put in less than it needs, it uses the stored energy. The more energy you have stored, the more overweight you are. The trick is to get your body to use the stored energy, which can only be done if you give it less energy than it needs, consistently.

Before You Start

The very first step is calculating your calorie needs. You can do that HERE. This will give you an approximation of your calorie needs for the day. The next step is to figure how quickly you want to lose the fat. One pound of fat is equal to 3500 calories. So to lose 1 pound of fat per week you will need to consume 500 calories less than your TDEE (daily calorie needs from the link above). 750 calories less will result in 1.5 pounds and 1000 calories is an aggressive 2 pounds per week.

Tracking

Here is where it begins to resemble work. The most efficient way to lose the weight you desire is to track your calorie intake. This has gotten much simpler over the years and today it can be done right from your smartphone or computer. r/loseit recommends an app like MyFitnessPal, Loseit! (unaffiliated), or Cronometer. Create an account and be honest with it about your current stats, activities, and goals. This is your tracker and no one else needs to see it so don’t cheat the numbers. You’ll find large user created databases that make logging and tracking your food and drinks easy with just the tap of the screen or the push of a button. We also highly recommend the use of a digital kitchen scale for accuracy. Knowing how much of what you're eating is more important than what you're eating. Why? This may explain it.

Creating Your Deficit

How do you create a deficit? This is up to you. r/loseit has a few recommendations but ultimately that decision is yours. There is no perfect diet for everyone. There is a perfect diet for you and you can create it. You can eat less of exactly what you eat now. If you like pizza you can have pizza. Have 2 slices instead of 4. You can try lower calorie replacements for calorie dense foods. Some of the communities favorites are cauliflower rice, zucchini noodles, spaghetti squash in place of their more calorie rich cousins. If it appeals to you an entire dietary change like Keto, Paleo, Vegetarian.

The most important thing to remember is that this selection of foods works for you. Sustainability is the key to long term weight management success. If you hate what you’re eating you won’t stick to it.

Exercise

Is NOT mandatory. You can lose fat and create a deficit through diet alone. There is no requirement of exercise to lose weight.

It has it’s own benefits though. You will burn extra calories. Exercise is shown to be beneficial to mental health and creates an endorphin rush as well. It makes people feel awesome and has been linked to higher rates of long term success when physical activity is included in lifestyle changes.

Crawl, Walk, Run

It can seem like one needs to make a 180 degree course correction to find success. That isn’t necessarily true. Many of our users find that creating small initial changes that build a foundation allows them to progress forward in even, sustained, increments.

Acceptance

You will struggle. We have all struggled. This is natural. There is no tip or trick to get through this though. We encourage you to recognize why you are struggling and forgive yourself for whatever reason that may be. If you overindulged at your last meal that is ok. You can resolve to make the next meal better.

Do not let the pursuit of perfect get in the way of progress. We don’t need perfect. We just want better.

Additional resources

Now you’re ready to do this. Here are more details, that may help you refine your plan.

I’m on my way

I’m excited. I’m excited for the next year. I’m excited to go to the gym n work out as a routine after school. I’m excited to look better and feel better.

For the most part of my life I’ve been overweight. Never morbidly obese or anything, but on the heavier side of overweight. Thankfully, I don’t look as heavy as I am n my fat kinda goes to the right places (other than my thighs >:(... ) but I’m ready to fit into n look good in clothes I like.

I’m a theatre junkie. N im ready to love my body n self more. To be more connected to my body. And I hope that helps on the stage.

I’m setting some rules for myself. Recently I read a weight loss book (not sure which one) but it was all about rules. So I’m setting my own:

  1. No motherfucking sugar.

sis has a sweet tooth n we all know that that DoEs NOt heLp. but really. No processed sugar. Sugar has 31 different names so I gotta look out for those ingredients. Natural sugars are fine. Like sugars from fruit or vegetables.

  1. No processed food.

There is SO MUCH processed food everywhere n I’m frankly sick of it. This includes noodles n white rice... (cries in asian) but it’ll be worth it. Processed food upsets my stomach too n it’ll just be better if I avoid it.

  1. No dairy.

talking about my upset stomach. I’m lactose intolerant! n dairy makes my toilet cry. If I avoid it, it’ll be better for my system n my toilet n my skin!

  1. Work for those big meals.

I’ve been doing this for a while. everytime I know I’ve got a big meal coming up I try to hit the gym extra hard. Maybe I’ll do it more often now.

  1. Don’t eat from 7pm - 10am.

The 10am part isn’t that bad. I’m always late for school so I just skip it. The problem is 7pm. I’m a sucker for late night snacking and I’ve got to stop!

I can do this. I deserve to be healthy. I deserve to love myself and feel confident.

Brown rice bad for weight loss?

In my research I am seeing the usual mixed results, you know, "oh yeah brown rice helps you lose weight!" but then I read "oh no no no, brown rice is high on the glycemic index and as a result, it spikes insulin which leads to fat storage!"

Which is it?

Words beyond this point are meaningless, they are just filler to satisfy the subs stupid requirement for word count. This post wont make it to the main page, I'm only looking for a final opinion from a few people on the matter at hand and then my post will disappear into obscurity. Hopefully this is enough words by now, thanks for reading this far if you did.
