Question regarding not losing anything

Hi everyone!

I've been trying to lose weight now for about 6 weeks using a certain diet: I eat nothing after 20:00 and don't start until 12:00. I heard somewhere that your body will start using fat reserves in the morning (I'd like some confirmation because if it doesn't do anything special, why do it?).

For lunch I always eat balanced like boiled eggs or occasionally scrambled with olive oil, and some vegetables. I stay away from sweets. Sometimes a cracker slips through, but not often. Dinner is usually mixed potatoes, veggies and meat in 1:2:1 mix. I don't have control over that so that's not something I can fix. I also take vitamins.

Now according to various sources my recommended calorie intake is 2091 (175cm, 73.4kg). Everyday I eat 1700, usually less. So technically I should lose weight right? In these 6 weeks not even a decimal has changed on the scale. I know weight loss doesn't happen overnight, but this seems a little weird.

Am I missing something? I don't really exersise but I do move ( delivery guy 2-3 days a week, 3 hours, plus I can't sit still :) ). So am I missing something important? Something essential that I don't do? Is there anything I can do to help myself?

TL;DR: 175cm 73.4kg, can't lose weight even after 6 weeks, eat healthy, slighty active.

Thanks in advance !

Day 1? Starting your weight loss journey on Saturday, 22 February 2020? Start here!

Today is your Day 1?

Welcome to r/Loseit!

So you aren’t sure of how to start? Don’t worry! “How do I get started?” is our most asked question. r/Loseit has helped our users lose over 1,000,000 recorded pounds and these are the steps that we’ve found most useful for getting started.

Why you’re overweight

Our bodies are amazing (yes, yours too!). In order to survive before supermarkets, we had to be able to store energy to get us through lean times, we store this energy as adipose fat tissue. If you put more energy into your body than it needs, it stores it, for (potential) later use. When you put in less than it needs, it uses the stored energy. The more energy you have stored, the more overweight you are. The trick is to get your body to use the stored energy, which can only be done if you give it less energy than it needs, consistently.

Before You Start

The very first step is calculating your calorie needs. You can do that HERE. This will give you an approximation of your calorie needs for the day. The next step is to figure how quickly you want to lose the fat. One pound of fat is equal to 3500 calories. So to lose 1 pound of fat per week you will need to consume 500 calories less than your TDEE (daily calorie needs from the link above). 750 calories less will result in 1.5 pounds and 1000 calories is an aggressive 2 pounds per week.

Tracking

Here is where it begins to resemble work. The most efficient way to lose the weight you desire is to track your calorie intake. This has gotten much simpler over the years and today it can be done right from your smartphone or computer. r/loseit recommends an app like MyFitnessPal, Loseit! (unaffiliated), or Cronometer. Create an account and be honest with it about your current stats, activities, and goals. This is your tracker and no one else needs to see it so don’t cheat the numbers. You’ll find large user created databases that make logging and tracking your food and drinks easy with just the tap of the screen or the push of a button. We also highly recommend the use of a digital kitchen scale for accuracy. Knowing how much of what you're eating is more important than what you're eating. Why? This may explain it.

Creating Your Deficit

How do you create a deficit? This is up to you. r/loseit has a few recommendations but ultimately that decision is yours. There is no perfect diet for everyone. There is a perfect diet for you and you can create it. You can eat less of exactly what you eat now. If you like pizza you can have pizza. Have 2 slices instead of 4. You can try lower calorie replacements for calorie dense foods. Some of the communities favorites are cauliflower rice, zucchini noodles, spaghetti squash in place of their more calorie rich cousins. If it appeals to you an entire dietary change like Keto, Paleo, Vegetarian.

The most important thing to remember is that this selection of foods works for you. Sustainability is the key to long term weight management success. If you hate what you’re eating you won’t stick to it.

Exercise

Is NOT mandatory. You can lose fat and create a deficit through diet alone. There is no requirement of exercise to lose weight.

It has it’s own benefits though. You will burn extra calories. Exercise is shown to be beneficial to mental health and creates an endorphin rush as well. It makes people feel awesome and has been linked to higher rates of long term success when physical activity is included in lifestyle changes.

Crawl, Walk, Run

It can seem like one needs to make a 180 degree course correction to find success. That isn’t necessarily true. Many of our users find that creating small initial changes that build a foundation allows them to progress forward in even, sustained, increments.

Acceptance

You will struggle. We have all struggled. This is natural. There is no tip or trick to get through this though. We encourage you to recognize why you are struggling and forgive yourself for whatever reason that may be. If you overindulged at your last meal that is ok. You can resolve to make the next meal better.

Do not let the pursuit of perfect get in the way of progress. We don’t need perfect. We just want better.

Additional resources

Now you’re ready to do this. Here are more details, that may help you refine your plan.

“You’re too skinny”

So I’m probably within about 15-20 lbs to the finish line. Been doing keto Omad and it’s been working extremely well. Maybe it’s just my mom being my mom but when I am cooking a healthy low carb dinner or just talking about keto recipes or weight loss she starts saying “oh you don’t need to lose anymore weight” and “you’re gonna start looking unhealthy if you keep this up” “you’re already too skinny” - when the fact of the matter is I dress in baggy clothes to hide my mid profile because I’m insecure, but when I take off my Shirt it is VERY clear that I still have a a 1-2 month sprint to the finish line. I have flabby hips, my stomach hangs over my pants, a tiny bit of face weight to lose. Muffin top.

Anyways it frustrates me, because she’s implying in negative connotation that I look unhealthy.

But yet there’s all these skinny people with flat stomachs, regular size hips, no muffin top, skinny face, and it’s not like she or anyone else is about to walk up to them and call them unhealthy.

Also I’ve lost weight before and gotten skinny around 6 years ago to the point of a flat stomach, I was finally happy with the way I looked in the mirror and my brother starts telling me I look like a skeleton, cousin tells me I look like a crackhead. (A few years later I had gained the weight back)

I want to be clear that I am very aware of what too skinny is, it’s not like my rib cage was showing I just had barely any fat on me, I thought I looked good. I was just thin, so it felt like the last time I did this that there was no winning. When I had talked to guys that I was interested in though they would describe me as normal looking and some would say that I was actually super hot xD

Also I know some people might think because I’m on keto omad that might be a bad thing, for one people might think it’s borderline starving yourself but it’s not, my body has adjusted and I eat smack dab in the middle of the day so I’m kept satisfied at night and I’m not all that hungry in the morning. For two people might think it’s an unsustainable diet, but I still have cheat days and I treat myself, I don’t want to get rid of carbs but I keep them to as minimal as possible and when I want a burger and some cider on an odd day I do it. And when I reach my goal weight I plan on maintaining, and balancing things.

Anyways does anyone else relate to this? Feels frustrating like I can’t win and I’m actively being discouraged to do what had taken a lot of courage and strength to stick with, and I know my body.

Much love - cleey

Period changes

I'm 22F, started at 240 lbs, now at 197 lbs. My periods are usually pretty light. The cramps suck, but the bleeding was no big deal. I'd bleed a normal-ish amount for the first day or two, then spot for another day or two. Over in three days usually, sometimes four. I wouldn't have to change my pad more than twice a day, usually once in the morning and once at night, and even then it was because it'd feel gross to wear one for longer than that, not because it was full and couldn't hold any more blood.

This month is different. I've had to change my pad or tampon every 2 hours, and even then I still leak everywhere. I'm on day 4 and while the bleeding is slowing down, it's still heavier than usual. My cramps have gotten better, which is nice. They used to leave me in bed in too much pain to move or think about anything else, but that hasn't happened in months. But I could really live without the heavier flow. I know it's probably because of the weight loss, but will my body learn to chill and go back to normal on its own eventually, or is it a thing I'd need to consider birth control to fix? If it matters, I put on the weight pretty quickly, and they were pretty light before that, when I was at a normal weight.

How to not feel guilty for vacation unhealthy eating?

Hi all,

A brief background of my weight loss journey. I am a Male (6'0" - 25yr) who started losing January 2019. I started at 295 lbs and as of today, am weighing in at 205 lbs. I am very thankful for my journey so far, but I still have a ways to go. My end goal is somewhere around 180 with muscle definition. Previously, last year, I was losing by exercise and caloric deficit, with a few 'cheat days' a month. However, after my Christmas holiday binge, I decided to buckle down for the first few months. I haven't had a single 'cheat day' or even 'cheat meal' since Jan. 2nd 2020. I am going on vacation starting tomorrow, and have decided that I don't really want to hold back. I want to experience all the new foods that I can, and drink some new beers, since I will be out of state.

Basically, what I am struggling with now, is the guilt attached to this feeling of letting go. In the past year, I never really had an issue with this feeling because it was usually an every few week occurrence where I would go off of my diet for a few days for certain events and holidays. Historically, my body holds a lot of water weight, and I bloat up pretty big if I go off the rails for a couple of days. I am finally feeling comfortable in my own body and am down several shirt and pants sizes. I'm scared that my new clothes I just bought won't fit anymore. I'm also scared that I'm going to be noticeably bigger when I return to work in a week. I think that being so healthy for the past 2 months has negatively affected my thoughts on food, and it makes me nervous.

I'm wondering if anyone who has gone through such a drastic weight loss journey has encountered anything similar, and how they have overcome the guilt surrounding it. Or, if I'm stressing about nothing, please tell me.

Thank you all for the time, and my apologies for the long post.

TL;DR: I lost 90 lbs and want to go wild for ~10 days, but am feeling guilty. How do I not feel bad about it?

What was the spark that started your weight loss journey?

I keep getting what I think is a 'spark':

  • Not recognizing myself in photos
  • Embarrassingly breaking a chair
  • Not fitting comfortably on a rollercoaster
  • Being told by a child that I have "fat knees"
  • Overeating Twinkies when we all thought the world would be Twinkie-less soon...

The list can go on and on. At every instance, I think, "This is it! This is the spark that will finally get my butt in gear!" But the spark eventually fails and I tell myself that:

  • I should take less photos and simply live in the moment
  • The chair had dry-rot
  • The rollercoaster wasn't that fun anyway
  • Children are stupid
  • Some other corporation will start making Twinkie's again - I can relax

Have any of your sparks actually stuck?
