Day 1? Starting your weight loss journey on Monday, 07 December 2020? Start here!

Today is your Day 1?

Welcome to r/Loseit!

So you aren’t sure of how to start? Don’t worry! “How do I get started?” is our most asked question. r/Loseit has helped our users lose over 1,000,000 recorded pounds and these are the steps that we’ve found most useful for getting started.

Why you’re overweight

Our bodies are amazing (yes, yours too!). In order to survive before supermarkets, we had to be able to store energy to get us through lean times, we store this energy as adipose fat tissue. If you put more energy into your body than it needs, it stores it, for (potential) later use. When you put in less than it needs, it uses the stored energy. The more energy you have stored, the more overweight you are. The trick is to get your body to use the stored energy, which can only be done if you give it less energy than it needs, consistently.

Before You Start

The very first step is calculating your calorie needs. You can do that HERE. This will give you an approximation of your calorie needs for the day. The next step is to figure how quickly you want to lose the fat. One pound of fat is equal to 3500 calories. So to lose 1 pound of fat per week you will need to consume 500 calories less than your TDEE (daily calorie needs from the link above). 750 calories less will result in 1.5 pounds and 1000 calories is an aggressive 2 pounds per week.

Tracking

Here is where it begins to resemble work. The most efficient way to lose the weight you desire is to track your calorie intake. This has gotten much simpler over the years and today it can be done right from your smartphone or computer. r/loseit recommends an app like MyFitnessPal, Loseit! (unaffiliated), or Cronometer. Create an account and be honest with it about your current stats, activities, and goals. This is your tracker and no one else needs to see it so don’t cheat the numbers. You’ll find large user created databases that make logging and tracking your food and drinks easy with just the tap of the screen or the push of a button. We also highly recommend the use of a digital kitchen scale for accuracy. Knowing how much of what you're eating is more important than what you're eating. Why? This may explain it.

Creating Your Deficit

How do you create a deficit? This is up to you. r/loseit has a few recommendations but ultimately that decision is yours. There is no perfect diet for everyone. There is a perfect diet for you and you can create it. You can eat less of exactly what you eat now. If you like pizza you can have pizza. Have 2 slices instead of 4. You can try lower calorie replacements for calorie dense foods. Some of the communities favorites are cauliflower rice, zucchini noodles, spaghetti squash in place of their more calorie rich cousins. If it appeals to you an entire dietary change like Keto, Paleo, Vegetarian.

The most important thing to remember is that this selection of foods works for you. Sustainability is the key to long term weight management success. If you hate what you’re eating you won’t stick to it.

Exercise

Is NOT mandatory. You can lose fat and create a deficit through diet alone. There is no requirement of exercise to lose weight.

It has it’s own benefits though. You will burn extra calories. Exercise is shown to be beneficial to mental health and creates an endorphin rush as well. It makes people feel awesome and has been linked to higher rates of long term success when physical activity is included in lifestyle changes.

Crawl, Walk, Run

It can seem like one needs to make a 180 degree course correction to find success. That isn’t necessarily true. Many of our users find that creating small initial changes that build a foundation allows them to progress forward in even, sustained, increments.

Acceptance

You will struggle. We have all struggled. This is natural. There is no tip or trick to get through this though. We encourage you to recognize why you are struggling and forgive yourself for whatever reason that may be. If you overindulged at your last meal that is ok. You can resolve to make the next meal better.

Do not let the pursuit of perfect get in the way of progress. We don’t need perfect. We just want better.

Additional resources

Now you’re ready to do this. Here are more details, that may help you refine your plan.

Realizing what has happened

So in my current relationship I gained 10kg over a year and I really hated myself for it. This was a year ago. At the beginning of quarantine in March I figured I've had enough and started another weight loss journey.... Everything went great and up until June I lost 6kg. Then my finals came and I just couldn't focus on the weight loss any more. I said to myself that It's no big deal and I could just eat normal until the finals were over. I did and manage to maintain the weight but in July everything went down hill again. I changed my birth control and I just couldn't stop eating. I told myself so much that I'd start the weight loss again but up Until now it never happened.

Now I just tried on a new pair of jeans I ordered. I got the size that always fitted me and I never had a problem with this size. But now I couldn't fit in it. I could barely get them to my thighs. I couldn't believe it and tried on another pair from the same brand. I know I could wear them comfortably in September but now I can barely get them to close and I'm just really devastated right now. I know I need to change but idk how to start anymore.

How do you get back on track after losing sight if your goals? Any tips are very appreciated

Postpartum and quarantine weight finally gone!

I had my baby in February right before shut downs and quarantine hit. The mixture of postpartum depression, isolation depression, and not working as a line cook where I routinely got 15k+ steps a day, undid a lot of my previous weight loss journey (5'3" 165 to 135.4 back up to 147).

One of my life goals has been to hike the Grand Canyon rim to rim and I decided I'm going to finally make that happen for myself. I got serious about CICO and started pilates twice a week and a 3 mile hike or walk whenever I could fit it in. Yesterday I finally hit 135.4, the last weight I was before getting pregnant and I'm so excited! I'm starting a new line cook job tomorrow and plan to keep up the exercise and increasing the hiking distance. I want to now set a new goal of at least 130 and work more on toning muscles and stamina for the Canyon. But I feel healthy and good about myself, and that's 10+ lbs already I won't be carrying around with me on hikes.

Recovering from stomach bug - how long before under-eating is a concern?

My partner in weight loss and I managed to catch a stomach flu together, which has been all kinds of fun! Our appetites and ability to keep food down have gone through the floor. Neither of us is hitting 1200kcal/day just yet, though we are trying.

We were doing OK with gradual weight loss before this, but it's been falling off faster than recommended for the last week or two.

The question: Is under-eating OK for up to a few weeks while we recover? Pushing our stomachs past their shaky comfort zone has not gone well so far. I'd add one of those vomit emojis for illustration but seeing it might trigger a real-life demo.

Is it bad to work out twice a day and eat only fruit, vegetables and meat for 7 weeks then go back to working out once a day and continue eating grains and stuff after the 7 weeks (at the start of a weight loss journey)

i hope it’s okay to post this here but is it bad to work out twice a day and eat only fruit, vegetables and meat for 7 weeks then go back to working out once a day and continue eating grains and stuff after the 7 weeks (at the start of a weight loss journey)

I have an event to go to in 7 weeks (that I only found out about a couple of days ago) and I’m stressing out because I’ve put on a lot of weight. I would like to lose as much as possible which I know shouldn’t be the goal but it’s only for 7 weeks. BUT

  1. I don’t want to harm my body or mess up anything

  2. I don’t want to stop losing weight when I continue after the 7th week. I want to continue losing weight as I have a fair bit to lose.

Thanks in advance!

Eating a certain number of calories vs. listening to your body?

I am 23 F, SW 154, CW: 146.5, started focusing on weight loss about 2.5-ish weeks ago. My technique has been to set a goal to eat around 1200 calories, but I will adjust based on how I feel. In the first 1.5 weeks, I ate all over the place, sometimes 800, sometimes 1600, sometimes 2100, sometimes 1200, etc depending on how hungry I get. This past week has been more like: M:1200, T:1200, W: 1700, Th: 1700, F: 800, S: 800, Su: 800...I eat until I feel full and don't feel restricted at all.

The main thing that has changed between last week and this week is that I stopped working out for the past week and I am working on transitioning to dairy free, no meat, sugar free, and gluten free (elimination diet to figure out triggers for my acne, this likely wont be permanent for me).

I don't think I will indefinitely eat at 800 calories per day, but if I eat that little calories for a week or two, is there any negative effect? I do want to emphasize that I am not starving myself, lol I love food so I will eat when I am hungry.

5'8. Down from 176lbs to 142lbs and disappointed.

I still have so much fat in my face! Like my body has thinned out while my face had stayed the same. I look almost obese from my face still tbh. (Male btw)

Any other people around my height? Both males and females? Share your experience with weight loss, when did your face start thinning out and becoming more attractive?

Idk how much more weight I should lose at this point.

Its like I've lost all this weight and Idk where it came off from but mostly not my face I suppose but if I look at it im a healthy weight according to most charts and in the lower end of BMI healthy range. I'm around 17% bodyfat I guess. I have to add some extra stuff so you can ignore this para, I really dk what to say.

It took 1 year (with diet breaks) to lose the weight and retain my metabolism. I can eat a lot without gaining anything back still.
