Dealing with idiots

Okay... The term "idiot" is being harsh.

I just had a frustrating conversation with someone who firmly believes you can only lose weight by increasing your exercise.

Now let's be honest here, it bloody helps. The more you burn, the better your weight loss will be assuming you are consuming an appropriate amount of calories. However no matter how I phrased it, how much I tried to explain the laws of thermodynamics, cal in vs cal out, "you can't out run your fork" I was met with, "yeah but unless you start doing cardio and getting out of breath you won't lose weight".

The person in question has lost 10kg since taking a warehouse job over the last 4 months. Previously they had a moderately active job as a joiner and shop fitter. The major change has been that they now work a night shift and eat 2 small meals during their shift instead of a large pizza and 2 side (and many beers) every night, on top of whatever crappy food they got from the food wagon each day.

I let their diatribe go on for a while, then questioned how, if they were correct, how they had lost 10kg in 4 months through "only increased exercise" vs my 6kg loss over 2 months purely by diet changes.

There was a moments peace. Bliss.

Then they took a minor backtrack and said I'd only see "real results" if I also upped my exercise.

Le sigh.

Carry on with what works for you my fellow losers. Ignore the "idiots". We have got this and will win the war!

(I ended the convo by telling him that a "well done" would be better and if he expected me to still be willing to marry him he should stfu and let me get on with my own damn business!)

A new goal in mind - anyone want to join?

Hey there everyone!

Back in 2017/2018 I went from being a UK size 14/16 to a UKsize 8. I went from about 83kg to now maintaining at approx 60-62kg depending on the week. The effect the weight loss had for me really did change my life for the better. However after keeping my weight steady since, I find I'm still not where I want to be. I still struggle with some troublesome areas that I'd like to try shift a bit more.

Ideally I'd like to get down to 58kg and then see how I feel. I do worry though that I'll just never be satisfied. I'm trying to focus less on the number now and more how my body changes visually but when you're so used to stepping on the scales it's hard.

I want to continue to improve my relationship with myself and learn to love the way I look. I want to find myself sexy and not hate myself for wanting that. The first time I lost weight I did it completely on my own in this weird tunnel vision state. It's a bit of a blur if I'm honest. This time around it would be nice to have people going through the same thing. I think it'll be harder this time around since there's less to lose. I worry I'm more likely to continue to maintain because I'm not fat anymore, just looking to shape up a bit.

Anyone else out there in the same boat?

I wish you all the best with your goals!

(for stats reference I'm female, about 5'7 and 21)

30 pounds weight loss

First time sharing on reddit! But I always get so inspired when I seen everyone posting their weight loss success and maybe this post will do the same! Since quarantine (Mid May) I have dropped 30 pounds. From 250 to 219. I’ve always struggled with my weight and tried working out dieting etc. it never seemed to become a habit for me. I’d go back to eating like crap a few days later, but after this Covid-19 scare, I suddenly became determined.I’ve never been a sick person, nor am I diabetic or anything like that but hearing how it effects people who are obese, it flipped a switch in me. I watched a bunch of Thomas DeLauer, & pretty much anything online that would give me the right direction to head in. I started doing keto and lost a few pounds and then I started watching Dr. Berg and learned about IF in more depth and just the way he explains it helped me really understand how it works. That’s when the weight really started to fall off. Since May of this year til now, I’m the lowest I’ve been in many years! I do a mix of OMAD and 2MAD and eat keto. Some days it’s hard to eat the exact amount of calories I need, as I don’t really get too hungry anymore, so I have to switch it up. Just wanted to let anyone know who’s struggling to lose weight or stay consistent that it doesn’t have to be perfect, and if I’m being completely honest when the weekends come I have tended to go a little crazy (drinking, eating carbs etc). But I kept the consistency Mon-Fri and it’s helped lose these 30 pounds. Now, I’m planning to really stay consistent (especially on the weekends), start working out and really give it my all so I can hit the Onederland! I don’t have a specific goal weight in mind, but just hoping to start feeling better, having more energy and pretty much feeling better about how I look. If you’ve made it this far in the post, thank you for taking the time to read this. Wishing you all stay safe and healthy :)

UPDATE: I'm losing weight at a reasonable rate, but things just keep getting worse

Original here if you want to read it: tldr, felt like my life was falling apart despite my weight loss

I cannot thank all of the commenters for all of the kind things they said last night. I was in a bit of a panic because I was feeling a bit sick with some covid symptoms, but after reaching out over the fears of my life falling to pieces despite losing 45lbs I had some very empathetic people reach out with truly kind words. I was more inspired by the level of empathy received than by the actual words them-self.

Thank you, all of you for your kind words. Waking up this morning I was reminded that the bad days are just that: bad days. You can push past them to the better days in front of you, and the failures of the past and be the success stories of your future. Much love to this community and best of luck to you on your journey.

Also, I highly highly HIGHLY recommend a physical journal listing your weight whenever you weigh yourself. I would have had 0 idea how well I progressed if not for the notes I made in "The Players Handbook" that I scribbled in black sharpie on black paper that can only be read when the light reflects just right off the ink lol.

Love yourself, tomorrow is a new day where you can do better than yesterday!

Anyone have any idea what’s going on?

I need some help, I‘m desperate

I need some advice because I feel like I’m losing my mind. Background: I gained 20 pounds in about a month and a half during summer of 2018; I was 131 pounds and the end of May and by the beginning of July I was 151. I’ve never in my life gained weight that fast, so I attributed it to stress, seeing as I was about to move cross country. I thought the weight would come off after I got all settled in, but it didn’t. At the start of summer 2019 I decided to get really serious and I got a personal trainer and started being even more careful about what I eat. No weight loss. Now it’s been two years, and I haven’t lost any weight. I’ve actually gained some. I’m 164 now, and I feel like I’m going crazy. I weight lift and do cardio 5 days a week, I eat well (chicken breasts, black beans, fruit, veggies, etc), I don’t drink alcohol, and I drink a ton of water everyday. I’ve had my thyroid tested (mom, sister, and two aunts have hypothyroidism) and the results were normal. I just got tested for PCOS, and those results were normal too. I had my dose of lexapro lowered and added in Wellbutrin, but that hasn’t helped at all. I feel so discouraged. I’ve never had this much fat on my abdomen in my life. I don’t care so much about the number on the scale as how I look/feel and how my clothes fit. But I look and feel terrible and my clothes don’t fit like they should. I truly don’t know what caused the initial weight gain and I have no clue why I can’t drop any of it. I’m feeling kind of hopeless right now to be honest. I have no idea what I did/am doing wrong.

Mini workout advice? (32M)

I’m 5’8” and 230lbs. I recently started doing mini workouts throughout the day because I can’t find time for dedicated workout sessions and also I hate exercising. Right now I’m just doing push-ups because I have a big gut and skinny arms and my wife told me she wants to see some muscles on me. So I’m doing reps of 25 pushups throughout the day, every time I go to the bathroom (hoping to establish a Pavlovian response and also need privacy at the office). I did over 100 on Sunday (forgot to count), 200 on Monday, 100 on Tuesday, and on track for at least 100 today/Wednesday.

What kind of goals should I be setting to start seeing real results and what kind of pitfalls do I need to avoid? Not looking for a miracle weight loss plan but I do want to make sure what I’m doing is actually going to have a significant result. TIA
