Ideas Please

I will start this post by sharing some information about myself. I am a 39 year old male. Fourteen months ago I was 348 lbs. I decided to change my life and have since dumped 109lbs. I am posting this because I feel like I know how to lose weight. I would say that I am pretty good at it. However, for the last three weeks I have been unable to move the scale. It really doesn't make sense to me. On average the last three weeks I am burning 3222, 3496, and 3315 calories daily and only taking in 1600-1900 daily. I drink more than a gallon of water daily. I workout five times a week and cardio the same. I am at a loss. I have seen these posts on this sub and I would just say they aren't working hard enough or they aren't counting their calories but now that it is me I know I have been. So if you please, give me any hints or advice to kick my weight loss back in gear. I am sick of seeing this number. Thanks.

Please help. I'm gaining the weight back and I can't stop binging.

I've lost 60 lbs in a year, it was the third time that I lost the weight I gained before- it was also the most difficult weight loss attempt of all three times. As soon as I hit my target, I felt pretty confident about my body so I gave myself a cheat day.

That day turned into two weeks of 3000-6000 calorie binges on Nutella biscuits, mac and cheese, cheesy fries and cereal.

Every time I get hungry, I freak out. I'm so scared of being hungry and I'm scared of eating, because when I eat the wrong type of food, I can't make myself stop. So I have zero willpower... my family keep bringing in junk food and if I see chips or sweets in front of me, I can't tell myself not to have it. I have to either throw it away or make someone hide it from me.

I eat a lot, then I try to force myself to vomit and it just doesn't work. I can't get myself to do it. So I promise myself to do better the next day. I can do it for a day or two before I sabotage myself again.

I feel terrible about my body, absolutely disgusting. I've also gained seven lbs.

I've quit my antidepressants cold turkey and I haven't taken them in two days now... because they were giving me cravings and making me retain water. I feel so anxious and irritable without them, but I'm scared they're making me gain weight. I'm scared I'll start binging and become fat again. Please help. I dont want to do this anymore and I dont know how to stop.

I really need some advice or suggestions that I can stick to that will help me overcome this problems. I'm so upset and ashamed of myself.

7 Easy Tips for Natural Stress Relief

Even before there was a worldwide pandemic, you were probably stressed: According to the American Psychological Association’s 2017 “Stress in America” report, more than 60 percent of adults felt stress about money, work and the future of the nation.1 With the COVID-19 pandemic, stress numbers have grown: The same report in 2020 found that 67 percent of Americans have felt an increase in stress over the course of the pandemic.2

A little stress—rushing to catch a bus, worrying how that job interview went—is unavoidable. But constant stress can increase your risk of mental health conditions like depression,3 as well as physical ones like heart disease.4 And it can take a toll on your relationships, too. In the 2020 “Stress in America” study, 20 percent of adults reported “snapping” or getting angry quickly, and 17 percent admitted to yelling or screaming at a loved one due to stress.2

It can also affect our weight loss success: Our ability to make healthy food choices is compromised when we’re stressed.5

All these risk factors of stress may be causing you more stress, so we’ll stop—and offer these seven easy and natural ways to relieve stress and reduce your risks, improve your relationships and stay on track to your weight loss goals.

1. Take a five-minute break to play a casual video game.

a woman and child playing video games together

With their constant access to current events updates and the FOMO of social media, our phones are usually a cause of stress. But used correctly, your miracle gadget can also help reduce stress. In a study of 66 undergraduate students suffering from computer-based “cognitive fatigue,” researchers had the groups take one of three types of five-minute breaks: One group sat in a room without phone or computer, doing nothing. Another group participated in a guided relaxation activity. And a third group played five minutes of a casual video game. The video game group saw similar reductions in distress as the guided relaxation group. However, they were also the only group to say they felt better after the break.6

What’s a “casual video game”? In the study, the authors describe them as “recreational games that are simple to play, easy to learn and designed to be played in short intervals.” The authors specifically mention Candy Crush and Angry Birds. But for a new one, try the game the study participants played: Sushi Cat 2, a simple game where players navigate a cat around to collect and eat sushi.6 Just the description of that game may provide some stress relief!

2. Spend 10 minutes in nature.

a man going on a hike on a sunny day for stress relief

Scientists have long known that time in nature provides natural stress relief. However, in 2020, scientists found the minimum effective dose: Just 10 minutes spent away from the stresses of civilization was enough to improve mood and focus while reducing blood pressure and heart rate. And you don’t even have to do anything in nature: Those benefits occurred while sitting or walking.7

If you have 15 minutes and can sit in a forest, even better: “Forest bathing,” a Japanese pastime where people recharge by sitting among the trees, has been shown to improve your immune system and cancer prevention,8 as well as a reduction in cortisol, a hormone associated with stress.9

3. Get moving.

Sitting in the forest is great, but sometimes you’ve got to move your body to bust that stress. Scientists believe that one way exercise helps with natural stress relief is by increasing a brain protein called galanin.10 Whatever the reason, it works: Walking for 30 minutes at lunch has been found to make walkers feel more enthusiastic, less nervous and more relaxed at work.11 And strength training has been shown to reduce overall fatigue, reduce depression symptoms in people diagnosed with clinical depression and reduce anxiety symptoms in healthy adults.12

Why not both? Combo your daily walk with one of these 10 workouts you can do right in your living room! >

4. Pet a dog or cat for 10 minutes:

Looking at pictures of cute animals might make you feel less stressed. However, it ain’t nothing like the real thing! When participants in one adorable study were given 10 minutes to pet cats or dogs, their levels of cortisol, a stress hormone, dropped significantly more than it did for participant groups who just viewed slideshows of animals.13

Don’t have a cuddly friend of your own? If you can safely visit a friend and social distance, pet their pet—or make plans to volunteer at your local shelter when you feel safe to do so.

5. Order a shrimp cocktail.

When you think of “stress eating,” luxurious, calorie-dense foods probably come to mind. This makes sense: As mentioned above, stress can compromise our ability to make healthy food choices.

But one seemingly decadent food is good for stress relief and is surprisingly good for your calorie control: Shellfish. Mussels, clams, oysters and shrimp are high in an amino acid called taurine,14 which has been shown to have antidepressant properties.15 They also contain zinc,16 a mineral found to boost mood.17

When prepared without buttery sauces, these crustaceans and bivalves can help you stay on plan, too: A three-ounce serving of shrimp (depending on the size, 8 or 9 shrimp) is just one PowerFuel on Nutrisystem! Looking for another delicious and easy way to prepare shrimp? Try this Cajun Sheet Pan Shrimp Boil Recipe! >

6. Drink (or eat) some matcha.

matcha cookies with white chocolate on a plate with milk

Among its many health benefits, green tea has long been shown to reduce stress. It’s no wonder then that its super-concentrated form, finely ground matcha powder, has been shown to do the same. And it works whether you drink this green powder18 or even if you eat it: In one study of 36 people, those who ate matcha-infused cookies for two weeks had lower levels of a stress marker compared to a group that were green-powder-free.19 What a delicious method for natural stress relief!

Get a packet of your own and try it in these Nutrisystem-approved Matcha Blueberry Muffins, in this surprisingly sweet Matcha Melon Smoothie or in your very own, homemade, Guilt-free Iced Matcha Latte.

7. Do a simple body scan meditation.

a woman resting on a gray couch with her headphones on for stress relief

You don’t have to be a master of mindfulness to get stress-busting benefits from meditation: Scientists have found that even one of the most basic meditation practices, a body scan, has natural stress-relieving effects.20

In a body scan, meditators put intentional focus on each area of the body, one by one, trying to really experience that segment of the body—how your back is in contact with the chair you’re sitting in, for instance, and how the chair feels against your back. You can find short, guided body scans on YouTube or in your favorite podcast app.

The doctor told me to rest exercise for one week. I am scared that I will regain weight during the rest and the anxiety is almost giving me a mental breakdown. Need advice on how to cope with this feeling.

It’s been about two months since my weight loss journey started and I was doing so great. I lost about 25 pounds since I started. I first did CICO then, added exercise to my journey. It was first walking and cycling and then adding home training (Youtube). I felt great. I still have to lose 31 pounds more to reach my goal weight. Recently my weight loss has been slow or stagnant but it hasn’t discouraged me.

However, today I went to an orthopedist because my right knee has been sort of in pain these past two weeks. It started hurting when I accidentally stomped on my right foot when I lost balance. It wasn’t serious but everytime the pain bothered me, I just went to get acupuncture and continued to do cardio, HIIT, etc. When the pain was bit noticeable, I would decrease the intensity of my exercise and when it felt better I would do more intense workouts.

After two weeks, I finally decided that I should do something about my knee before it gets worse and I don’t have to keep worrying about it in middle of my workouts. So I went to the orthopedist and did had my knees for x-rays. The doctor said I show early signs of osteoarthritis which is early for my age (30F). It can be many factors, maybe obesity or hereditary. I was told to lose weight and put off exercise for 1~2 weeks. Being told no exercise was the biggest discouragement that I felt since I started my weight loss.

I can’t lower my calorie intake with my current diet because it would be unrealistic. Only way right now is to exercise but I can’t. I am scared that I will regain the weight I lost by taking a break from exercise and fall into my old habits of being sedentary. What scares me is even more is that my knee will never be the same and I can’t do intensive workouts anymore. I don’t want to go back to my old self where I was gaslighted about my weight from my family, especially my mom. Or mean store employees being rude to me about shopping for clothes when I go into stores. I like the feeling of being able to wear my old clothes before gaining weight. I want to continue to lose weight to reach my goal weight.

How do I deal with this fear and anxiety? Does anyone have advice or been in a similar situation? I need help.

Sharing my Weight loss journey.

Hey all, Sorry for bad english but I'll do my best. Just wanna share something i went through since January 2021, it's about being insanely obese at 150kg which is (330lbs) to overweight 90kg (almost 200lbs) in just 5 months!! and continuing my journey, just wanna share the disadvantages and the advantages of loosing this big number in just 5 months,. So i started in January 2021 with my first visit to the ER for suffering a high blood pressure visiting a Cardiologist at the age 21 is terrifying, i hated my self my body everything i went through depression for 1 months i didn't ate never got out of my room never moved from my bed, suicidal thoughts, too emotional, all that during quarantine days, i thought my life is done here, i went through hardest days in my life, i needed some help but i was too embarrassed/afraid to talk about it,. Quarantine ends, my brother told me that i need to lose weight and alot, and for the first time in my life i followed a diet that i made my self unfortunately, i googled "daily calories need" to find out how much calories do i eat per day to lose certain amount of weight in a week, i started to ear less cutting out sugar, replaced sugar by honey to my coffees, eating a banana if i was sugar hungry instead of a cake or a donut, etc.., i did walk every single day 10km per day for 3 months straight, i didn't struggle at all cuz' i loved it, i loved everything that i did, the problem is with my diet i didn't reach a nutrition docs., i did focus on lean protein and fiber, i did try to cut down carbs but i couldn't, after a while i started eating a day (half a chicken almost 500grams skinless and 500grams raw potato) all cooked in air fryer, i did follow this diet for almost 4 months, everyday exactly same food skinless chickens and potato, now in 25 oct 2021, since January 2021 i lost total 60kg, didn't eat any junk food at all, i can't and I'm afraid of eating any food that i don't made, i feel guilty when i eat other foods or eating any food high in fat, i can't stand seeing and smelling any junk food, i know i have a problem but kinda like it, cuz' it changed my personality this diet changed my life, i feel more happy about my body i can socialise with people more i can find clothes i like that fits me i can go out more without being embarrassed about my body and how i look, i can feel and live the life that i wanted for many years but i couldn't follow any diets due to ppl saying it's hard to do it, i felt i will still obese for the rest of my life, i can talk to people i can do stuff i couldn't do before, I'm so happy for loosing this weight and continuing loosing more, some days i forget to make food so i just eat frozen berries, i feel joy of starving my self, but now i don't feel hungry anymore when i forget eating i start having headache all day, i started loosing my hair and taking supplements, i don't have energy if i didn't drink my coffee, i feel my body is still shocked after loosing this weight and changing my diet after being addicted to food and junk food back in the day, i feel happy in my life now but in the other hand i still lost something, many people asked me how is my diet, how i lost this much weight in just 5 months!, and here me telling what i won and what i lost, i don't feel old me anymore, i feel like I'm another person,.

the purpose of me sharing this is: Loosing weight fast is not good for your health as many people want, my advice is go to doctor let the doctors tell you what to eat and how to eat and how much, don't do anything by yourself,. I won alot by doing this diet but also i lost alot, You can do better and win without loosing by visiting doctors, At the end i won my mental health and i lost some physical health, hair, nails, dizzy all day, don't have enough energy anymore, feeling nauseous when smelling food i don't eat anymore, Now I'm currently 90kg and i will reach my goal to 70kg this is the hardest 20kgs, cuz' i don't have the energy to workout anymore like i used too, don't be like me and reach to doctor they will help you.

Thanks for reading, much love. MON-OCT-2021

Day 1? Starting your weight loss journey on Tuesday, 26 October 2021? Start here!

Today is your Day 1?

Welcome to r/Loseit!

So you aren’t sure of how to start? Don’t worry! “How do I get started?” is our most asked question. r/Loseit has helped our users lose over 1,000,000 recorded pounds and these are the steps that we’ve found most useful for getting started.

Why you’re overweight

Our bodies are amazing (yes, yours too!). In order to survive before supermarkets, we had to be able to store energy to get us through lean times, we store this energy as adipose fat tissue. If you put more energy into your body than it needs, it stores it, for (potential) later use. When you put in less than it needs, it uses the stored energy. The more energy you have stored, the more overweight you are. The trick is to get your body to use the stored energy, which can only be done if you give it less energy than it needs, consistently.

Before You Start

The very first step is calculating your calorie needs. You can do that HERE. This will give you an approximation of your calorie needs for the day. The next step is to figure how quickly you want to lose the fat. One pound of fat is equal to 3500 calories. So to lose 1 pound of fat per week you will need to consume 500 calories less than your TDEE (daily calorie needs from the link above). 750 calories less will result in 1.5 pounds and 1000 calories is an aggressive 2 pounds per week.

Tracking

Here is where it begins to resemble work. The most efficient way to lose the weight you desire is to track your calorie intake. This has gotten much simpler over the years and today it can be done right from your smartphone or computer. r/loseit recommends an app like MyFitnessPal, Loseit! (unaffiliated), or Cronometer. Create an account and be honest with it about your current stats, activities, and goals. This is your tracker and no one else needs to see it so don’t cheat the numbers. You’ll find large user created databases that make logging and tracking your food and drinks easy with just the tap of the screen or the push of a button. We also highly recommend the use of a digital kitchen scale for accuracy. Knowing how much of what you're eating is more important than what you're eating. Why? This may explain it.

Creating Your Deficit

How do you create a deficit? This is up to you. r/loseit has a few recommendations but ultimately that decision is yours. There is no perfect diet for everyone. There is a perfect diet for you and you can create it. You can eat less of exactly what you eat now. If you like pizza you can have pizza. Have 2 slices instead of 4. You can try lower calorie replacements for calorie dense foods. Some of the communities favorites are cauliflower rice, zucchini noodles, spaghetti squash in place of their more calorie rich cousins. If it appeals to you an entire dietary change like Keto, Paleo, Vegetarian.

The most important thing to remember is that this selection of foods works for you. Sustainability is the key to long term weight management success. If you hate what you’re eating you won’t stick to it.

Exercise

Is NOT mandatory. You can lose fat and create a deficit through diet alone. There is no requirement of exercise to lose weight.

It has it’s own benefits though. You will burn extra calories. Exercise is shown to be beneficial to mental health and creates an endorphin rush as well. It makes people feel *awesome* and has been linked to higher rates of long term success when physical activity is included in lifestyle changes.

Crawl, Walk, Run

It can seem like one needs to make a 180 degree course correction to find success. That isn’t necessarily true. Many of our users find that creating small initial changes that build a foundation allows them to progress forward in even, sustained, increments.

Acceptance

You will struggle. We have all struggled. This is natural. There is no tip or trick to get through this though. We encourage you to recognize why you are struggling and forgive yourself for whatever reason that may be. If you overindulged at your last meal that is ok. You can resolve to make the next meal better.

Do not let the pursuit of perfect get in the way of progress. We don’t need perfect. We just want better.
