Increased my steps and still no weight loss

I’m 27/F, 5’4, 210lbs. I gained ~16lbs over the duration of covid lockdowns. I was fighting to lose weight at 194 lbs in beginning of 2020….

I’ve always struggled with my weight. I was always heavier than my classmates even as a middle schooler.

All my life I’ve tried to lose. The only time I’ve ever been successful was in college because I wasn’t eating… I lost weight the first few weeks of school BC the food was so foul and I was struggling being away from home for the first time in my life.

Once I got comfortable at school the weight stayed off mostly because of all the walking I did around campus.

I graduated in 2016 and have only ever gained weight from there. I’ve had blood work done, nothing is ever wrong. My blood pressure is fine.

I exercise 4-6 days a week. Even during covid I used the equipment I had access to to workout. Lots of walks, lots of kettlebell training, jumprope, etc. but other than my hour long workouts I was sedentary.

I decided to cut the crap and watch what I was eating better. I cook 99% of my own food. I focus on lean meats, veggies, fruit, lowfat dairy, and colllex carbs with occasional drinks/treats.

I don’t drink alcohol during the week, but I’ll have a few drinks with friends on the weekends.

I lift for about an hour 4-5 days a week, and I just started a new job where I’m getting 8-10k steps a day 4 days of the week. This is a MAJOR increase from the barely 4K I was taking before.

TDEE calculators have me at 2500cals for maintenance because I’m moderately active.

I eat anywhere from 1700-2100 (depending on the day- I tend to sit around 1800 on average) Either way they’re both within my deficit range and I’ve had ZERO weight loss. I bounce between 208-212lbs consistently. Even if my maintenance was only 2000, eating at 1800 is a deficit along with my activity level …..

I cannot add any more activity, doing so would just be unsustainable for me. I want to be realistic in how much time I spend at the gym. But I’m getting frustrated.

I am really going to give up. If I only ate 1500 Cals a day I’d be STARVING. I don’t think weight loss is gonna happen for me

Edit: for anyone who will say I should cut the alcohol completely, I literally see my friends once a month. Being able to go out and have a few drinks is something everyone should be able to do in a balanced way. I’m not going to sit there drinking water because I want to lose weight that badly. My efforts the other 29 days of the month SHOULD be providing me some success

Had a mini epiphany

So about mid-October I seriously committed to losing weight and bettering my health. Since then I’ve lost 20 lbs. so far, it’s been pretty easy. I mainly do CICO, with no major restriction of foods (I’ve been vegetarian for years and I cut out any beverages except coffee, tea, and water, but other than that I eat whatever I want within my calorie budget). It’s been surprisingly easy to stick to. I still eat delicious food and haven’t pressured myself to work out, so it feels doable and sustainable.

However, I noticed that this week for the first time I’ve been really struggling. When I got off work, despite having healthy meals prepped in my fridge, I’ve found myself ordering takeout and eating quite a bit more than I should. My mental health has also taken a hit this week, despite doing extremely well lately.

At first I thought it was just an inevitable pitfall of weight loss (it can’t always be a breeze, right? Lol). But suddenly today I realized something: my sleep schedule has been abysmal this week. I’ve gotten only about 5 hours each night. This is mainly due to staying up late to read a new book series I’ve gotten really into so it’s definitely my fault and easily correctable, fortunately.

I know they always talk about how important sleep is for weight loss, and I’ve certainly learned that firsthand this week.

Get enough sleep, everyone!

Weight Loss Help

I was losing a little bit of weight here and there before Thanksgiving but I had fallen off the wagon a little bit and gained some weight back. I was mainly counting calories to lose weight. I’m trying to get back on track I was wondering if smoothies weren’t a good way to lose weight? If smoothies aren’t, I was wondering if there was any other drinks to substitute meals that would be good for weight loss.

What is your opinion on cardio during weight loss but also strength building?

So, I have been losing weight for about 6 months. I'm a 30 year old 6'6"/M and went from 385lbs to 340lbs so far. I am a naturally large guy, and even at heavy weight have been pretty athletic. My whole time while dieting I have also been working out 4 days a week. I do a decent amount of strength training, but start every workout with a mile on a treadmill or olyptical.

The past week my fiance hasn't felt well so we skipped cardio and just did the normal lifting sessions. For example, 6 bench press sets scaling to heavy, shoulder press, chest flys, back flys, lat pull downs, then rows. That is a normal Monday for me. What I noticed was I felt so much better lifting when I didn't start with cardio. I wasn't as out of breath when recovering, I felt strong, and wasn't huffing and puffing through it.

After some more research I've discovered a lot of research about cardio not being as beneficial to weight loss when lifting is involved because of cardio wearing you out before your lifts, and causing you to lift less. I know as far as fat loss goes building muscle is great because you burn calories during a workout as well as after you are done.

All in all, I'm curious what some people think. Is cardio held on too high of a pedestal when it comes to weight loss? Should you just do cardio on certain days, or maybe as filler? Or is cardio the answer in your eyes?

What exercise do you guys prefer to lose maximum amount of weight and fat in a week?

So I’ve been pedalling twice a day first in the morning after work and next at night around 6pm after getting some sleep.

I’m losing around 1300-1400 calories a day but I’ve that pedalling is not to good to lose body fat and weight?? It’s one of those pedalling machines where you stand and pedal. I do that for an 65minutes = 700 calories down

I’ve been doing this for a week now and I’m still thinking if this is the best exercise that I should do everyday.

Please go ahead ask any question you may have.

I was 283pds but now I’m 261pds from working out for 2 months. Ps this weight loss is not from pedalling I’m just trying to find more exercise to maximize my weight loss

Losing weight without giving up alcohol?

Is it possible?

I’m currently eating 1,300 calories a day, it’s going fine, except that I enjoy drinking with my friends at least one night a week.

I’ve accepted I’m going to have to reduce my alcohol intake, I can easily drink half a litre of vodka if I’m not careful and if I’m right that’s about 1000 calories, which isn’t acceptable. But having a drink is a big part of my social life.

a bottle of my favourite wine is 594 calories, so if I account for that in my daily intake and make sure I only have the one bottle, it won’t affect my weight loss super negatively, will it?

I’m pretty good at self control when it comes to alcohol (as long as I’m not drinking vodka lol)

Susan lost over 7 stone and dropped from a size 22 to a size 12

I have been overweight since my early twenties with various stints on diets over the years. The first diet was at age 23, and subsequently each weight loss attempt thereafter having a higher start weight and lower loss achievement before I jacked it in.

The last time I was a reasonable weight was in 2009, when I first joined WLR in the build up to my wedding... I lost three stone and got to 14st 4lb. Still overweight but better than I was.

Of course, as soon as the wedding was over, normal service resumed. Then I got a new job and moved to a new town..

My husband and I have a good social life which usually involves visiting pubs as well which doesn’t help matters. This, and general laziness, resulted in my weight steadily increasing over the last 10 years and I put on all the weight I had lost previously plus another stone for good measure.

How I've tried to lose weight in the past...

I have tried Slimming World on and off for about 20 years and had had some success previously but, in recent years, I struggled to adjust to the new ‘extra easy’ system and would lose a stone and then fall off the wagon again.

Having done calorie counting on WLR in 2009, I felt that nothing was really ‘free’ since everything I eat/drink has calories and I was not properly exercising portion control. I was using the ‘it’s free’ mantra to kid myself I could eat as much as my husband.

I have always enjoyed the slimming world recipes though and the healthy eating it promotes, I just now put the recipes into WLR and ensure I stick to the correct portions.

I also tried the 5:2 Fast diet at 500 calories per day and, whilst some of the principles suited me, I found it very difficult.

However, when this changed to a 5:2 based on 800 calories and, with the greater awareness of a Mediterranean diet together with lower carbs, I found a way of eating that does suit me so I have been using some of these principles together with WLR and counting calories.

How my weight affected me...

I wouldn’t say that my weight significantly affected my health but I was very aware that I was pushing my luck with being obese.

I used to get nervous before flights in case the seatbelt wasn’t long enough. I had started to notice that my knees were getting achy as well with carrying all the extra weight.

It was the small things that bothered me...

"huffing and puffing when cutting my toe nails and struggling to reach them"

...and not having much choice clothes wise.

Mentally, whilst I would have preferred to be slim, I have been accepting of my weight since, having lost weight before, I knew my weight was in my control and therefore it was my choice to be overweight.

I was not happy with my weight and how I looked but I accepted responsibility for it.

My motivation to lose weight...

There are so many reasons why I wanted to lose weight, I was so fed up with myself and unhappy about my weight and in October 2018, I went for a pre-op assessment for a minor op and the nurse queried if I had sleep apnoea since I had all the indicators for it.

I didn’t have it but the hospital ran a number of tests to be sure but it did ‘wake’ me up as to what the future may hold if I did not take control of my weight and the daily food/drink decisions I was making.

So the main motivation for losing weight was and still is my health.

The wlr tools that helped me the most...

Initially, I used the food diary only ensuring I was in calorie deficit but as time has progressed, I have become more interested in nutrition, ensuring I have enough fibre, F&V etc.

I feel that my knowledge is increasing all the time without it being ‘gimmicky’ and when, as time went on or I felt a bit stagnated, I browse recipes, the food plans available, and the forums to get more ideas.

I also like the variety of forums since there is something for everyone. I have been inspired by other people’s achievements and learned a lot about different techniques that have helped me stay on course.

One of the big habits for me to break was with regard to my alcohol intake since I had got into a habit of daily ‘wine o’clock’ drinking which I knew was very unhealthy for my body and mind. I particularly followed the ‘Stay off the Booze’ thread which inspired me and kept me going as I incorporated more and more alcohol free days into my life.

How my life has changed since losing weight

Since losing the weight, random aches and pains that I put down to getting older have gone, I have loads more energy and I don’t snore anymore!

Susan after weight loss in red dress

"words can’t describe how good I felt in my size 14 red dress!"

I still can’t believe that I have nearly done it and I am still adjusting to not being overweight.

"I have rediscovered an interest in clothes and fashion."

I have been quite strict not to buy too many new clothes on my way since I am determined to get to goal and don’t want to discard clothes I love. Luckily, a good friend of mine lost weight and donated a lot of clothes to me which has seen me through, but I am now enjoying restocking my wardrobe with clothes I like as opposed to clothes that fit.

How exercise has helped my weight loss

I did not want to join a gym or start a significant exercise regime when I started since I was worried that if I failed at the exercise, I would also fail at losing weight too so I just steadily increased my walking and tried to incorporate more walking and movement in my day.

I got myself a fitbit for my 4.5 stone loss reward (7 months in) and it inspired me to increase my walking and ensure I got my steps in every day.
