Put on ~50 lb and looking to make a change. Anyone in a similar boat?

Hey:)

I put on 50 lb, possibly more, in the last half year due to emotional eating.

I was being abused by someone who had started to abuse me since I was a child and I used food as a way to numb the feelings of fear, hopelessness, and sadness. I know that this was the wrong way to deal with it, and two of my friends said I look disgusting now and that I should have had some self respect and not let myself go, but at the time, food distracted me from getting beaten up and choked regularly and told i was going to be killed.

I was able to get out of that situation over a week ago and am staying at a friend’s and Monday I’m going abroad to live and be with my partner. He accepts my weight because he understands what caused me to eat so much.

After being at my friend’s I initially experienced and still do experience fear because my abuser called and also I’m scared of going outside but overall I feel much better and for the past two days I ate in moderation.

I ordered a scale and when I get it I’ll be able to tell how much I need to lose but I’d estimate I’m around 20 lb overweight.

I could use some supportive friends in my weight loss journey going forward so if any of this resonates please write to me:)

Just cant seem to drop weight

I started at 213 lb with the goal of reaching 130lb. I am female 5ft 2in. I lost 13 lb in the first 3 to 4 months but now for the last 2 months. My weight has been stuck at 200lb. I have joined kickboxing it is intense and I usually burn over 600 calories in the session ( Fitbit). I dont not eat to compensate for that. But I still haven't seen a loss.

I have lost a lot of weight in the past (but gained it all back while I was in a bad relationship) but this time it seems like it wont budge. I am starting to panic. It's been 6 months in all since I started weight loss. I am 28 years old I wanna lose weight soon. So that I dont I have lose skin. (Elasticity will decrease with age)

Any ideas on what to do or why this is happening?

Rant: Getting comments about my weight loss ALL THE TIME

26F 170cm SW:105kg CW:85kg GW: ~65kg

So I started seriously trying to lose weight some time in march and in the beginning I did really well with intermittent fasting 16:8, exercise about 2/3 times a week and counting calories using an app that tells me with my cw and gw how many calories I should consume.

However, lately I've been really struggling finding my motivation and discipline. I'm still making progress, but it's decidedly slower. But I'm not where I want to be yet and so I try.

But today at work, a colleague I haven't seen in a while saw me and told me how much weight I've lost and how good I look, which I hear a lot from co-workers I don't see that often, but then she suddenly tells me I shouldn't lose any more weight please, that I look perfect. What? I didn't even know how to react.

First of all, I'm still obviously overweight, so it's not like I'm losing an unhealthy amount. And second, why does everyone feel like they have to comment about my weight all the time. Even the compliments get weird really quickly, but I understand why people say it, to encourage me. Yet this was so out of line.

I don't know, I just wanted to vent a little. I'm sure everyone has had comments like this, but let's persevere!

Resources for gettin yo' mind right in relation to weight loss and a healthy mindset

Resources for gettin yo' mind right in relation to weight loss and a healthy mindset

Does anyone have any suggested resources for those of us wanting to work through an unhealthy mindset in relation to eating and weight loss?

For me, I am looking for some help regarding losing weight in a healthy way (not severe restriction) and with losing weight in a non self-hating way. I've tried the tried and true ideas like CICO but I just end up restricting severely and I think it is my relationship with food as a comfort/stress device that is the issue.

I am a 23 year old woman that is approximately 30 kilos overweight, with my ideal weight being 64kg according to BMI calculators.
I have tried to lose weight for years (basically since I was 12) but it has always been in a negative way and I end up failing after less than a week whilst starving myself.

By resources I mean books, workbooks, youtubers, podcasts etc.

Day 1? Starting your weight loss journey on Wednesday, 18 September 2019? Start here!

Today is your Day 1?

Welcome to r/Loseit!

So you aren’t sure of how to start? Don’t worry! “How do I get started?” is our most asked question. r/Loseit has helped our users lose over 1,000,000 recorded pounds and these are the steps that we’ve found most useful for getting started.

Why you’re overweight

Our bodies are amazing (yes, yours too!). In order to survive before supermarkets, we had to be able to store energy to get us through lean times, we store this energy as adipose fat tissue. If you put more energy into your body than it needs, it stores it, for (potential) later use. When you put in less than it needs, it uses the stored energy. The more energy you have stored, the more overweight you are. The trick is to get your body to use the stored energy, which can only be done if you give it less energy than it needs, consistently.

Before You Start

The very first step is calculating your calorie needs. You can do that HERE. This will give you an approximation of your calorie needs for the day. The next step is to figure how quickly you want to lose the fat. One pound of fat is equal to 3500 calories. So to lose 1 pound of fat per week you will need to consume 500 calories less than your TDEE (daily calorie needs from the link above). 750 calories less will result in 1.5 pounds and 1000 calories is an aggressive 2 pounds per week.

Tracking

Here is where it begins to resemble work. The most efficient way to lose the weight you desire is to track your calorie intake. This has gotten much simpler over the years and today it can be done right from your smartphone or computer. r/loseit recommends an app like MyFitnessPal, Loseit! (unaffiliated), or Cronometer. Create an account and be honest with it about your current stats, activities, and goals. This is your tracker and no one else needs to see it so don’t cheat the numbers. You’ll find large user created databases that make logging and tracking your food and drinks easy with just the tap of the screen or the push of a button. We also highly recommend the use of a digital kitchen scale for accuracy. Knowing how much of what you're eating is more important than what you're eating. Why? This may explain it.

Creating Your Deficit

How do you create a deficit? This is up to you. r/loseit has a few recommendations but ultimately that decision is yours. There is no perfect diet for everyone. There is a perfect diet for you and you can create it. You can eat less of exactly what you eat now. If you like pizza you can have pizza. Have 2 slices instead of 4. You can try lower calorie replacements for calorie dense foods. Some of the communities favorites are cauliflower rice, zucchini noodles, spaghetti squash in place of their more calorie rich cousins. If it appeals to you an entire dietary change like Keto, Paleo, Vegetarian.

The most important thing to remember is that this selection of foods works for you. Sustainability is the key to long term weight management success. If you hate what you’re eating you won’t stick to it.

Exercise

Is NOT mandatory. You can lose fat and create a deficit through diet alone. There is no requirement of exercise to lose weight.

It has it’s own benefits though. You will burn extra calories. Exercise is shown to be beneficial to mental health and creates an endorphin rush as well. It makes people feel awesome and has been linked to higher rates of long term success when physical activity is included in lifestyle changes.

Crawl, Walk, Run

It can seem like one needs to make a 180 degree course correction to find success. That isn’t necessarily true. Many of our users find that creating small initial changes that build a foundation allows them to progress forward in even, sustained, increments.

Acceptance

You will struggle. We have all struggled. This is natural. There is no tip or trick to get through this though. We encourage you to recognize why you are struggling and forgive yourself for whatever reason that may be. If you overindulged at your last meal that is ok. You can resolve to make the next meal better.

Do not let the pursuit of perfect get in the way of progress. We don’t need perfect. We just want better.

Additional resources

Now you’re ready to do this. Here are more details, that may help you refine your plan.

70 lbs down in just shy of one year!

Hit a huge mile stone 2 days ago but I wanted to make sure it took before I was too excited. However 3 days in a row I am still 146! Which is 70 pounds lost since I started January 4th of last year! I still have some more vanity pounds I would like to lose (10-20 depending how I look and feel) but I'm excited to officially be in a healthy weight range. I really want to thank this sub for all the motivation. I'm not a huge poster or commenter but I check in every day. Reading people's successes and failure really helped keep my head in the right space to not give up like I have so many times before.

I don't want to drag on but the basic gist of how I lost it is the same as most of you: CICO. I use MyFitnessPal and log every single thing I put in my body even on a gross cheat day. I knew I ate badly pre weight loss start but you don't really realize how badly until you start logging it 😬 I also really had to stop drinking my calories. I still indulge occasionally but no more 4 beers after work almost every day, no more soda at all, and my Starbucks order went from a chai tea latte to an iced unsweetened green tea. I also started paying attention to what I actually like: I don't love spaghetti, I love spaghetti SAUCE so now I put it over veggies! I love Mexican food, but the tortilla is my least favorite part so why not make a burrito bowl instead.

I did workout through the entire process, but weight loss is 💯 about diet. I worked out to: keep me accountable, have some extra cushion in case my calorie count was off, build muscle so my maintenance calories were higher, help with loose skin, and honestly just to give myself a hobby that wasn't drinking and eating while watching Netflix. I never made it a point to eat back my exercise calories though, the tracking is just too unreliable and they were supposed to be my safety net against bad labeling (we all know it's legally allowed to be off by a certain amount)

I'm happy to answer questions if anyone has any! I'm also a vegetarian (started WAY pre weighloss) if anyone else is and finds that helpful. And my workouts of choice were: pilates on a reformer, aerial yoga, wall yoga, hot yoga, pure barre.

Here are my progress pics if anyone is interested. Thanks for reading my story.

I started a weight loss challenge at my gym, and I have 7 weeks left.

I’m female, 43 years old, 5’10, 250 lbs, 43% body fat. Obviously not feeling too good about myself. I thought doing this challenge would help motivate me a bit. It’s been a week and a half and I’ve exercised about every other day. I’ve been counting calories on my phone. My whole body hurts. I started a new job about 6 months ago and I hardly move from my desk. I’ve put on 20 pounds. My legs and feet are starting to swell at the end of the day. It goes down at night when I sleep, but it’s very alarming. I don’t sleep very well...maybe 4 hours a night during the week, then I catch up on the weekends...not good. I just want to feel healthy. Thanks all ❤️
