People who've succeeded in maintaining a long term significant weight loss, how did your beliefs change?

I'm fascinated how much our own beliefs affect our daily lives and our abilities to reach our goals. I've found that just by challenging my current beliefs and adopting a new belief, big changes are possible. I've applied this to relationships especially and seen a big improvement (for example, I would change my belief from good relationships are rare to good relationships are common etc.). But with relationship beliefs I had a lot of people with great relationships around me to observe to come up with new beliefs and more importantly evidence for those new beliefs. I haven't really encountered that many people who've had successful weight loss so I thought I'd ask here.

TLDR: if you've succeeded & maintained a big weight loss, how did your beliefs about weight and weight loss change and what are your beliefs about weight and weight loss now?

20 year old bloke who needs help

I’m gonna skip the bull shit and just come out saying I’m in my 140 kgs currently, maybe just below. I was on this weight loss program where I had two meal shakes a day and then dinner but was turned off them after someone told me they just make it easier to gain weight after you stop them. While I like to think my fitness is good for my weight I’m just after some basics exercises or what not to help boost my motivation and shit. Also where to look for the right and wrong food to eat, was actually on a Keto diet for a couple months which I dropped 10 kilos, but I became a uni student and some of the Keto replacement products i were using in my meals were just too much for a student (with my finances anyways). I get I might get told to go somewhere and seek help from professionals but I’d thought I might try my hand here.

Time to improve my life so I can love myself.

I'm so depressed because of how I look after weight loss and I don't know how to start accepting myself...

I'm a 22 year old female who has lost 75 lbs (34 kg) since November 2019, I weigh 76 kg (167 lbs) now. I have been overweight my whole life and became clinically obese 3 years before I decided to lose weight in 2019. Growing up watching shows like the biggest loser, I never knew that people get loose skin after they lose weight. Even the girls at my high school who lost a lot of weight never really mentioned having loose skin, so it just never occurred to me. As for me, I have 46 more pounds (21 kg) to lose and I already have so much loose skin, my body literally looks like it's melting...

When I lay on my back and put my feet up, the skin pools at the top of my thighs and covers a small portion of my stomach. I used to have really pronounced hip dips (that I used to love) when I was 100 kg but now they're just flaps of skin with little fat that look really weird, even my mom and my sister say so. My boobs literally sag down to my belly button since they deflated so much, I expect them to sag, even more, when I lose the 46 pounds I still have to lose. I lost most of the fat in my upper back but I still have rolls there... And it's all just skin. Heck, even my face and my neck have loose skin on them.

When I tell people how upset this makes me feel and how I wish I never gained so much weight they just tell me to accept my reality and try to accept myself. But, I don't know how?! I was always told I'd be prettier and more confident if I lost weight but now I feel like I only have more insecurities to worry about. Being fat masked how huge my head is for my body, now I look like a bobblehead. I have an hourglass figure (41-inch bust, 29-inch waist, 42-inch hips) that you can't even see because of how much loose skin I have and how low my boobs sag!! People would always say "Oh you already have such a nice body it would look even better if you lost weight" but I think it looks worse now. I know how vain this sounds and I know I shouldn't focus on how I look and rather how much healthier I'm becoming but I just can't help but think of how disgusting my body looks when I see myself naked... It has gotten to the point where I am constantly thinking what's the point of losing the last 46 pounds if my body is gonna look even more disgusting in the end anyway.

I don't know what to do, I have been so depressed about this ever since noticing it a few months ago. I want to follow other people's advice and accept myself but every time I look at myself all I feel is shame, disgust, and frustration at myself for getting so damn fat and ruining my body like this.

Day 1? Starting your weight loss journey on Monday, 28 December 2020? Start here!

Today is your Day 1?

Welcome to r/Loseit!

So you aren’t sure of how to start? Don’t worry! “How do I get started?” is our most asked question. r/Loseit has helped our users lose over 1,000,000 recorded pounds and these are the steps that we’ve found most useful for getting started.

Why you’re overweight

Our bodies are amazing (yes, yours too!). In order to survive before supermarkets, we had to be able to store energy to get us through lean times, we store this energy as adipose fat tissue. If you put more energy into your body than it needs, it stores it, for (potential) later use. When you put in less than it needs, it uses the stored energy. The more energy you have stored, the more overweight you are. The trick is to get your body to use the stored energy, which can only be done if you give it less energy than it needs, consistently.

Before You Start

The very first step is calculating your calorie needs. You can do that HERE. This will give you an approximation of your calorie needs for the day. The next step is to figure how quickly you want to lose the fat. One pound of fat is equal to 3500 calories. So to lose 1 pound of fat per week you will need to consume 500 calories less than your TDEE (daily calorie needs from the link above). 750 calories less will result in 1.5 pounds and 1000 calories is an aggressive 2 pounds per week.

Tracking

Here is where it begins to resemble work. The most efficient way to lose the weight you desire is to track your calorie intake. This has gotten much simpler over the years and today it can be done right from your smartphone or computer. r/loseit recommends an app like MyFitnessPal, Loseit! (unaffiliated), or Cronometer. Create an account and be honest with it about your current stats, activities, and goals. This is your tracker and no one else needs to see it so don’t cheat the numbers. You’ll find large user created databases that make logging and tracking your food and drinks easy with just the tap of the screen or the push of a button. We also highly recommend the use of a digital kitchen scale for accuracy. Knowing how much of what you're eating is more important than what you're eating. Why? This may explain it.

Creating Your Deficit

How do you create a deficit? This is up to you. r/loseit has a few recommendations but ultimately that decision is yours. There is no perfect diet for everyone. There is a perfect diet for you and you can create it. You can eat less of exactly what you eat now. If you like pizza you can have pizza. Have 2 slices instead of 4. You can try lower calorie replacements for calorie dense foods. Some of the communities favorites are cauliflower rice, zucchini noodles, spaghetti squash in place of their more calorie rich cousins. If it appeals to you an entire dietary change like Keto, Paleo, Vegetarian.

The most important thing to remember is that this selection of foods works for you. Sustainability is the key to long term weight management success. If you hate what you’re eating you won’t stick to it.

Exercise

Is NOT mandatory. You can lose fat and create a deficit through diet alone. There is no requirement of exercise to lose weight.

It has it’s own benefits though. You will burn extra calories. Exercise is shown to be beneficial to mental health and creates an endorphin rush as well. It makes people feel awesome and has been linked to higher rates of long term success when physical activity is included in lifestyle changes.

Crawl, Walk, Run

It can seem like one needs to make a 180 degree course correction to find success. That isn’t necessarily true. Many of our users find that creating small initial changes that build a foundation allows them to progress forward in even, sustained, increments.

Acceptance

You will struggle. We have all struggled. This is natural. There is no tip or trick to get through this though. We encourage you to recognize why you are struggling and forgive yourself for whatever reason that may be. If you overindulged at your last meal that is ok. You can resolve to make the next meal better.

Do not let the pursuit of perfect get in the way of progress. We don’t need perfect. We just want better.

Additional resources

Now you’re ready to do this. Here are more details, that may help you refine your plan.

Need desperate help

So I’ve been losing weight since January 6, 2020. By this time of the year I had expected to lose all my weight but I’m only halfway to my goal. Don’t get me wrong, I’m grateful for having lost the weight I have.

I keep plateauing and it’s annoying. I started out at 270 pounds. I first plateaued at 240 ibs and then again at 230 and now at 220. Unfortunately, over this past month with finals and the holidays, I’ve gained weight and the scale is putting me between 224-229.

I should’ve done research on caloric deficits when I began but I didn’t. After putting in my stats (18M, 5”8, 225ib) I found I need to consume around 2000 calories a day. I’ve been consuming way less than that since I began and now I feel like my body has adapted to very low calories to maintain weight to the point where lowering calories is detrimental. Am I screwed for weight loss? I’m feeling very depressed.

Wisdom teeth extraction worries

I have two wisdom teeth that have to be extracted in a few weeks. I started my weight loss journey in October and have successfully lost 15 pounds. I have stayed extremely dedicated to exercising and CICO.

Now for my worries, When I was 17 I had two teeth filled that had cavities. Little did I know, they were wisdom teeth. Idk why my parents chose to get them filled and not pulled. So, story short, I have to get the top two wisdom teeth pulled while I’m put to sleep. I’m scared that since I won’t be able to exercise for a few days, I will completely fall off and ruin all my progress. I’m not so worried about the diet, just losing the motivation. I had a tooth extracted as a teenager and remembered being in so much pain that all I wanted to do was cry or sleep.

Sorry for rambling. I just have so many emotions involving this entire thing.
