Been a lurker for a while and deciding to post on here! I’ve lost 61 pounds since April!

M 5’7 SW: 281 CW: 220 GW: 150

The most amazing thing is that this isn’t the first time I’ve done a weight loss journey. The first time, I started at 261 and went down to 205 (56lbs lost at that time!!) before I got lazy and stopped going to the gym. I gained all that weight back plus and extra 20 pounds and I had enough of it and decided to go for it again, but this time to not give up!

Now I basically lost the most weight ever had in my life and I’m continuing until I get down to 150lbs! Some people don’t know I’m losing weight because I don’t go out as much. I’ve told some people online but either we haven’t met or we haven’t seen each other in a long time. I’m going to post a progress pic when I lose a significant amount of weight.

As of now, I notice have face gains compared to when I started and better breathing with being down 61lbs, but I know I’m still a work in progress and I must continue on my metamorphosis!

Day 1? Starting your weight loss journey on Thursday, 23 September 2021? Start here!

Today is your Day 1?

Welcome to r/Loseit!

So you aren’t sure of how to start? Don’t worry! “How do I get started?” is our most asked question. r/Loseit has helped our users lose over 1,000,000 recorded pounds and these are the steps that we’ve found most useful for getting started.

Why you’re overweight

Our bodies are amazing (yes, yours too!). In order to survive before supermarkets, we had to be able to store energy to get us through lean times, we store this energy as adipose fat tissue. If you put more energy into your body than it needs, it stores it, for (potential) later use. When you put in less than it needs, it uses the stored energy. The more energy you have stored, the more overweight you are. The trick is to get your body to use the stored energy, which can only be done if you give it less energy than it needs, consistently.

Before You Start

The very first step is calculating your calorie needs. You can do that HERE. This will give you an approximation of your calorie needs for the day. The next step is to figure how quickly you want to lose the fat. One pound of fat is equal to 3500 calories. So to lose 1 pound of fat per week you will need to consume 500 calories less than your TDEE (daily calorie needs from the link above). 750 calories less will result in 1.5 pounds and 1000 calories is an aggressive 2 pounds per week.

Tracking

Here is where it begins to resemble work. The most efficient way to lose the weight you desire is to track your calorie intake. This has gotten much simpler over the years and today it can be done right from your smartphone or computer. r/loseit recommends an app like MyFitnessPal, Loseit! (unaffiliated), or Cronometer. Create an account and be honest with it about your current stats, activities, and goals. This is your tracker and no one else needs to see it so don’t cheat the numbers. You’ll find large user created databases that make logging and tracking your food and drinks easy with just the tap of the screen or the push of a button. We also highly recommend the use of a digital kitchen scale for accuracy. Knowing how much of what you're eating is more important than what you're eating. Why? This may explain it.

Creating Your Deficit

How do you create a deficit? This is up to you. r/loseit has a few recommendations but ultimately that decision is yours. There is no perfect diet for everyone. There is a perfect diet for you and you can create it. You can eat less of exactly what you eat now. If you like pizza you can have pizza. Have 2 slices instead of 4. You can try lower calorie replacements for calorie dense foods. Some of the communities favorites are cauliflower rice, zucchini noodles, spaghetti squash in place of their more calorie rich cousins. If it appeals to you an entire dietary change like Keto, Paleo, Vegetarian.

The most important thing to remember is that this selection of foods works for you. Sustainability is the key to long term weight management success. If you hate what you’re eating you won’t stick to it.

Exercise

Is NOT mandatory. You can lose fat and create a deficit through diet alone. There is no requirement of exercise to lose weight.

It has it’s own benefits though. You will burn extra calories. Exercise is shown to be beneficial to mental health and creates an endorphin rush as well. It makes people feel *awesome* and has been linked to higher rates of long term success when physical activity is included in lifestyle changes.

Crawl, Walk, Run

It can seem like one needs to make a 180 degree course correction to find success. That isn’t necessarily true. Many of our users find that creating small initial changes that build a foundation allows them to progress forward in even, sustained, increments.

Acceptance

You will struggle. We have all struggled. This is natural. There is no tip or trick to get through this though. We encourage you to recognize why you are struggling and forgive yourself for whatever reason that may be. If you overindulged at your last meal that is ok. You can resolve to make the next meal better.

Do not let the pursuit of perfect get in the way of progress. We don’t need perfect. We just want better.

I went on a diet two months ago, lost 18 lbs, and now I’m seemingly losing weight out of nowhere?

Anyone else experiencing this? I’m a woman, whose been a wide variety of weights. I went on a diet two months ago, and changed my habits somewhat. I went from 188 lbs to 170.

I’ve maintained 170 for the past while, not really making an effort to lose weight, but moreso watching it like a hawk. I work a pretty physical job, and average about 10,000 steps a day, which is not extreme, but I’d call it maybe semi active.

In the past few days I’ve seemingly gone from 170 to 167 out of nowhere, and I’m a bit concerned.

I’m feeling fine, I definitely welcome the weight loss, but I’m a bit freaked out. Has anyone else had this happen?

I hope I don’t continue losing a lot of weight every day, because then I should probably see a doctor. Currently I’m feeling good but I don’t know if this is normal or not. Like, I literally had takeout last night and my scale shows a pound down from yesterday????

I’ll add that I have normal thirst/hunger. I constantly pee but that’s how I’ve always been and my mom is the same way. I feel completely fine otherwise. It’s just, losing 3 lbs in 2-3 days is slightly….concerning.

Anyone else relate here?

Don’t comment on someone’s food/drink choices unless asked directly

A little backstory: I’ve been struggling with weight since my twins were born — eating less than 1200 calories, two years of going to the gym without missing a day, cutting sugar and everything. Even my doctors aren’t sure why I’m not losing weight and have been stuck.

I went to a new stylist today and the girl next to us was talking about about her job, where they do cool sculpting. I’d mentioned that I was interested in it, because I’ve tried so much else and really need some sort of boost. My stylist took this as a signal to talk about how you can achieve weight loss easier with other methods, like cutting cokes out (pointedly staring at the little mini coke in my hand they’d given me).

I hadn’t had a coke in weeks and when offered, accepted it because I had a caffeine headache for lack of coffee this morning.

I shut up about it after, but let me tell you that it stuck with me all day today. I’ve agonized over that fucking mini coke that I shouldn’t have drank. Why? Because of a point look and silence from the chairs next to us when mentioned.

Guys, when someone mentions their struggles with weight loss or whatever, don’t point out how they’re failing right in front of you. She’s likely forgotten all about our conversation, likely didn’t see my face pale or that I didn’t finish drinking it. But I haven’t forgotten and it makes me angry.

What's this deal with water weight?

48M, 5'7", SW250 CW202 GW<175

So, I hit a plateau during the past 7-10 days where I was at 207lbs.

Starting two days ago, I stated peeing like crazy. Clear urine, none to very little color. Not exaggerating, I've probably peed out 2-5 lbs... or at least it's felt that way and thats what the scale says. Every 15-30 minutes at a time, full bladder, good chunk of the day.

I'm not taking supplements, I don't eat processed foods that would be a source of sodium. I do drink a cup of black coffee in the morning, about six ounces, but that's less than the 20oz coffee I used to drink daily with lots of cream and sugar.

I'm not doing anything differently than I've done over the past few months. Hitting the gym 3x a week, walking for cardio.

I have noticed that my weight loss does come in "spurts" where I plateau, for a week, then I lose like 4-5 lbs, then I plateau again.

Because of my bad thyroid, I have blood work done every three months, so I know my blood chemistry is good

What gives?

That in between stage of weight loss

I'm at a point where I have lost a good amount of weight but bot enough to fit in my "goal" clothes. In two years I've gone from 246 to 221, just with diet and now I'm trying to focus on exercise to get under 200. My journey has been super positive so far but now...

My old clothes are just loose enough that they don't look the same. My favorite shirts, jeans, coats ect aren't as cozy, or fall strangely. I pulled put some fall sweaters and they are just baggy enough to make me feel like I'm swimming. My favorite leather jacket doesn't hug my body anymore but shifts annoyingly. All this would be great if I fit in my "goal" clothes yet.

But the pieces I've collected because they were cute but didn't come in my size, mostly thrift store finds, are still to snug to wear comfortably. Most are only a size smaller than my "normal" size but I guess I'm in a weird middle ground rn.

So my question is if anyone has had this problem? Hit this point in weight loss where clothes are just uncomfortable. I need a bit of advice on how to get pass this negative aspect. I speaking emotionally/mentally how to see this as positive instead of "I'm uncomfortable in my favorite clothes all the time".

Advice on losing arm fat?

I recently lost almost 80 pounds and am pretty satisfied with how the weight loss turned out. My stomach is flat, lost weight on my legs, back fat has disappeared as well as my double chin. I'm around a size 4 now from a size 14. The only thing that is still bothering me is my arms. I feel like they're still very fat and large, and it looks weird and disproportionate to how the rest of my body looks. People I know have told me that I'm exaggerating and I have lost weight on my arms, and I definitely can see from comparison photos that they have absolutely gotten smaller, but they still look much bigger than the rest of my body now and it looks so weird to me. I've tried lifting weights, I Jog and take walks, my diet is extremely low carb and low in salt - and like I said the exercising has worked for literally EVERY part of my body except my arms. Does anyone have any advice???
