"Clean" Eating Challenge - Seeking Accountability

Hola, losers of Reddit.

I have been postponing giving weight loss a real try for awhile now. I keep waiting for things to be just right to try, and the second I find an excuse - I jump on it. More or less just engaging in self-sabotage. Like many, the pandemic has not been good to me and I have been eating poorly during it all.

Time to stop.

I want to challenge myself to eat clean for 100 days. And I KNOW that eating "clean" can be seen as a debated thing, as there are many different ways to eat healthy. And I know that ultimately weight loss is a result of CICO. However, diligently counting calories isn't something that works well for me, mentally. I just want to try to eat 2-3 healthy meals a day that are composed of whole foods. YES, I know that you can lose weight and eat McDonald's. But personally, I can't just eat small amounts of unhealthy food. I always overdo it.

So what am I looking for? Just some support and accountability, I suppose. I have been using the Ate app to take a photo log of my meals. And I was thinking about creating a public instagram where I could share that daily. Would anyone be willing to try this with me?

My stats:

F/31/SW: 156 (which is my highest ever weight, not counting the peak of pregnancy. Of which I have done twice). GW: 120

Seasonal Depression and Weightloss

I’ve had a few great things happen in terms of my weight loss and I had to share them with you all because no one in my life is actively losing and i feel like they don’t quite get my excitement. Aside from my husband, the rest feel like my weight loss is judging them for not losing.

Last year was the first time in 10 years that I really decided to commit and lose weight. And i did I lost 30 lbs. Not enough to get to my goal(SW 260) but also better than not losing at all. But I lost the motivation over Christmas. At first i thought this was because I’m self employed and my busy season goes from Black Friday through Valentine’s Day and i was just too busy to eat well. And this is definitely part of it. But not the whole story

But then this week the sun came out. It has been sunny and in the 50’s for almost 2 weeks and i feel like I’m on speed. Happiness is easier. And suddenly getting on the scale, and seeing my post holiday weight gain wasn’t terrifying. And making the re-commitment to get healthy was easier.

This gave me the revelation that instead of trying to fight the seasonal increase in my depression I need to work with it. So like an animal that hibernates I’m going to bust ass through the fall to lose weight and work towards my goals. But then come fall I’m going to relax my rules. I’ll focus on maintenance and keeping activity levels up.

I just wanted to pop in and remind you all to give yourself space to be human. And work with what you can accomplish. If your depression messed up your weight loss goals that is absolutely NOT a moral judgement on you.

The other bit of exciting news i have is that i bought an elliptical trainer on FB marketplace. This is my #1 favorite piece of gym equipment. I HATE treadmills. I got ACL and meniscus surgery a few years ago and I like walking but never enough to buy a treadmill. I always end up getting gym memberships just to use elliptical. But COVID changed that. Now going to the gym is the last thing I want.

I never thought I’d be the kind of person to wake up and be excited to work out. but like i’m so thrilled. This might be my favorite purchase of 2021. And it feels like a game changer. Because now I can get the cardio i need to get healthy from my living room. I could only do 10 minutes this morning but I’m going to try and do 10 minutes 2-3x a day until i can get through a whole 30 at once.

Just hit my first goal !! Here’s what I did :)

Hi there!! I’m excited to say that after getting on the scale today, after four weeks of hard work, I hit my first goal and I’ve lost over 10 pounds!! There’s no noticeable differences in my body yet, other than some muscle gain, but I’m happy that I’m on the right track.

I thought I’d share what exactly I did. This is coming from a complete beginner, so take everything I say with a grain of salt!!

Exercise!! I exercise usually 6 times a week. However, if I’m not feeling well or I’m busy then I’ll skip a day! I actually skipped 3 days this past week!! (Don’t be afraid to skip a day if you’re really not feeling it.)

Here’s my routine! I walk about 1.5 miles. After my walk I usually take a quick break and have some water. Then I do about 45 minutes of exercise videos!! Almost all of the videos I watch are free on YouTube from the creator Koboko Fitness. She is super beginner friendly, and I’m certain you’ll be able to find some videos that work well for you on her channel. Her videos are great because you get a small break in between each exercise and a 60 second break in the middle of the video. I highly recommend her to anyone who is just starting out.

Food!! Food was the hardest part for me in all of this. I love food. And I love junk food. It was hard to cut it out, but I managed to do it. I pretty much did it cold turkey. I went one night eating fast food for dinner to the next night eating healthier. Now, I wouldn’t say that everything I eat is super, super healthy. But it’s better than fast food. I typically eat one snack of fruit after my workout, and then one meal for dinner. I honestly wouldn’t recommend this, because I’m probably not consuming as many calories as I should. If you do want to do this, please make sure you’re eating enough!! Food is just a difficult thing for me, so I’ve found this works best. As for the food I eat... I typically go for easy stuff I can cook at home like sandwiches with some fruit. But if I’m doing take out, I’ll make sure to grab something a bit healthier off the menu. I also try to make sure I’m not doing take out multiple nights in a row. And, I also eat some frozen healthier meals. You can get low calorie frozen chicken nuggets that taste great!! I also don’t track my calories through an app. When I started doing that I realized it was messing with my head and hurting my mental health. If you’re someone who tracking calories works well for, great! But it’s not for me. I just keep a mental note in my head of how many I’ve eaten and what all I’ve eaten that day.

Another note regarding food. Please remember that it is totally okay to indulge in your favorite food sometimes!! For me, I let myself eat whatever I want on special occasions while still eating moderately. Literally, yesterday, I had fast food and a small thing of ice cream for dinner, since it was a special occasion. And I still managed to meet my goal on my weigh in day!!

And my last note. If you’re wanting to lose weight, do it for yourself, not for anyone else. If you feel happy in your body already, then rock it!! Plus sized people who are comfortable in their bodies are genuinely so beautiful, and just radiate confidence!! Also remember that weight loss doesn’t have to be what helps you find self love. Mental health plays a big part in learning to love your body. Just remember, no matter what size you are, you are gorgeous! But if you want to lose a bit of weight for yourself, go for it!! I believe in you :)

If you read this far, thanks!! I hope you have a lovely day!! Eat something and stay hydrated :)

Injuries, COVID-19, & Losing Weight with limited Hand Usage

Like many people on this sub, 2020 has been a difficult year for my (26F) weight. I got COVID-19 due to being deemed essential & while I never went to the hospital, I did spend almost 2 months in quarantine in a studio apartment as my partner & I both went through weeks of fatigue & symptoms in March & April. This resulted in several lbs of weight gain.

I was trying to get back on track when I was hit with intense daily hand pain that makes it difficult to do chores & perform my job on a daily basis. I met with an orthopedist & completed 6 weeks in the fall of physical therapy with some improvements towards pain, but I have been following up trying to receive a diagnosis ever since. In addition to monitoring calories, I also started working out 2x per week & walking 30-40 min per day yet I continued to gain weight. I also stopped receiving my period around this time.

Cut to today, I am swimming in doctors appointments & currently taking prednisone (unrelated to the hand pain) which has caused me to pack on more pounds. Recently, a specialist identified a VitaminD deficiency which I have been working towards correcting. Overall, I have gained over 30lbs over the last year.

I have had difficulty with workouts & cooking because cooking especially can be agonizing for my hands, and I need my hands for my job. I’ve considered trying to pick up pre-made meals regularly at the grocery store, however, I live in a largely anti-mask area so with my immune system suppressed on steroids, I have been struggling to manage the anxiety of getting COVID again & prefer to avoid indoor interactions as much as possible.

I am looking for advice on workouts, meals, anything weight loss related for those struggling with hand pain & a post COVID slump. I have recently struggled with a relapse on exercise & diet consistency alongside steroid usage which has resulted in my weight creeping up again.

Sharing some positive updates :)

Hello!

I usually only post on here when I'm having major freak-outs over minor things like water retention, but I wanted to come here to share some positive things that I've seen since i lost weight. At my heaviest I was 314 pounds at 21 - I lost a little weight through a really unhealthy and unmaintainable calorie deficit. About a year later, after I graduated college and moved to the city of my dreams, I was ready to try again.

My starting weight was 292 pounds in November of 2020. Through a healthy calorie deficit and exercise, I've been able to lose 64 pounds so far. Here are some things I've noticed:

  • I am swimming in my old clothes. Shirts that were too tight for me to wear without being embarrassed are now too large on me and I've dropped from a size 42 waist to a size 34, and I dropped from almost 3XL to XL ( soon to be large I hope... ;) )
  • I'm able to be more active - near my heaviest weight I remember I tried to jog with a friend once and was actually only able to run for 10 seconds. Now I jog in central park 5 days a week and I'm pushing myself every time!
  • I've become a really good chef! Something that helped me the most on my weight loss journey was cooking at home. I used to only really be able to cook eggs, but now I find myself trying new and exciting recipes every week.
  • I'm more willing to be spontaneous.
  • I was able to quit smoking cigarettes because my determination to be more active outweighed my need to smoke.
  • This one may be a little TMI but I used to have a COMICALLY large butt for a guy. And not like a toned one like a big ginormous embarrassingly large butt. Now my butt kind of looks normal. I love it!

I still have a long way to go and there are a lot of battles I'm still fighting. I find it hard to not weigh myself every day and find myself body checking constantly. Body dysmorphia is very real and I'm trying to combat it but for now it still has the best of me. But I'm tired of only posting on this thread when I'm having freak-outs and wanted to share a little happiness with you guys. Thank you to everyone who's helped me along the way - here's to the rest of the journey!

So confused! Stuck and discouraged

Okay, female, sw 235, cw 208, gw 180 (ish?)

Last 2 weeks I'm stuck. I saw a post about calculating body fat % to get a more accurate BMR. I did that, holy cow, its only 1450 cals. (Without body fat % it was 1750) But my fitbit says, on my laziest day, I burn 1875. Most days I burn an average of 2400. I spend about 45 minutes a day on the treadmill running/walking or uphill, a variety to get my heart rate UP.

I eat about a weekly average of 1650 cals a day...

My weight loss was steady, and I know plateau is normal. But now... Am I eating too much? Doing too much cardio? I feel really confused. I did start out low carb (50-75 g) and have gone to moderate carb (80-110 g).

I just realized this is more a rant of confusion
