Seasonal Depression and Weightloss

I’ve had a few great things happen in terms of my weight loss and I had to share them with you all because no one in my life is actively losing and i feel like they don’t quite get my excitement. Aside from my husband, the rest feel like my weight loss is judging them for not losing.

Last year was the first time in 10 years that I really decided to commit and lose weight. And i did I lost 30 lbs. Not enough to get to my goal(SW 260) but also better than not losing at all. But I lost the motivation over Christmas. At first i thought this was because I’m self employed and my busy season goes from Black Friday through Valentine’s Day and i was just too busy to eat well. And this is definitely part of it. But not the whole story

But then this week the sun came out. It has been sunny and in the 50’s for almost 2 weeks and i feel like I’m on speed. Happiness is easier. And suddenly getting on the scale, and seeing my post holiday weight gain wasn’t terrifying. And making the re-commitment to get healthy was easier.

This gave me the revelation that instead of trying to fight the seasonal increase in my depression I need to work with it. So like an animal that hibernates I’m going to bust ass through the fall to lose weight and work towards my goals. But then come fall I’m going to relax my rules. I’ll focus on maintenance and keeping activity levels up.

I just wanted to pop in and remind you all to give yourself space to be human. And work with what you can accomplish. If your depression messed up your weight loss goals that is absolutely NOT a moral judgement on you.

The other bit of exciting news i have is that i bought an elliptical trainer on FB marketplace. This is my #1 favorite piece of gym equipment. I HATE treadmills. I got ACL and meniscus surgery a few years ago and I like walking but never enough to buy a treadmill. I always end up getting gym memberships just to use elliptical. But COVID changed that. Now going to the gym is the last thing I want.

I never thought I’d be the kind of person to wake up and be excited to work out. but like i’m so thrilled. This might be my favorite purchase of 2021. And it feels like a game changer. Because now I can get the cardio i need to get healthy from my living room. I could only do 10 minutes this morning but I’m going to try and do 10 minutes 2-3x a day until i can get through a whole 30 at once.
