DAE feel like calorie counting is bad for their eating habits?

Just posting here for some validation and to let anyone else out there who feels the same know you're not alone in hating calorie counting. I'm autistic so a part of me cares an unreasonable amount about accuracy and precision which makes guesstimating quantities really stressful but I don't want to weigh everything either for fear my housemates will ask questions or judge. This stress makes me more prone to either restrict to avoid having to calorie count or overeat either because of the stress or hunger. I then feel compelled to further restrict after overeating to "make up" for the calorie surplus the day before... You can see where this is going.

I guess I'm putting this all out there because I feel like whenever I discuss weight loss with doctors, they push calorie counting or programs like Noom. My current goal is ~16 hr intermittent fasting, boosting my fiber and protein and minimizing my ultra processed food intake, making tea/flavored water when I get sugar or snack cravings, staying hydrated, keeping dessert and alcohol to one day/week each and, the hardest, working on eating slower and getting more sleep. I'm still experimenting with what I need to do to support these habits and working on getting them down so I'm hoping that's why I haven't meaningfully lost weight for the past 6 months. I guess I just am hoping for some reassurance I'm not doomed to fail even though I'm not calorie counting like my doctor says?

Btw, any tips on eating slower? I'm a terrible snarfer and I'm not making much progress on consistently slowing down.

For those with extra skin after weight loss: is your skin stretchy or just loose?

Curious if you’re able to pull your skin into a stretched position or if it just hangs loose.

I gained & lost 50 pounds and was left with skin that doesn’t necessarily look loose, but is quite stretchy.

People keep saying I might have Ehler’s Danlos Syndrome, but my skin was never like this before (not that I noticed, anyway.)

Has anyone noticed this on themselves? My stomach, thighs, chest, neck, and face all have significant stretch when pulling on the skin. I can even do it on my forearms/backs of my hands.

Weight and grief.

Hi guys, I’m 24m in California and I’m here for both advice and guidance. I lost my younger brother in May of this year and since he’s left I gained a lot of weight. I always struggled with weight gain and loss, but I’m the heaviest I’ve been. I’m open to any tips, suggestions, recommendations, etc for foods, exercises, drinks, and more! To start my weight loss process I’m going to go on walks and start eating better. Things have been so hard lately and I would love to see and hear how others have struggled with weight issues and grief. I do struggle with binge eating disorder amongst other mental health issues, but I’m trying to not let that get in the way of doing what’s best for me. Cheers!!

Lost 154 lbs (started around 368, now 214) while managing epilepsy + recovering from two brain surgeries — happy to share what worked

Stats: down 154 lbs, now at 214. Not a straight line, and not fast — this happened alongside years of epilepsy treatment, including a 2017 brain surgery (temporal lobectomy) and a 2022 deep brain stimulation implant.

A few things that mattered for me specifically, since my situation had some unusual constraints (seizure risk, surgery recovery, medication side effects, depression that didn't fully lift until DBS settings were tuned in early 2026):

  • I couldn't rely on high-intensity everything, so I built consistency around low-impact stuff first (walking, then a weighted vest, then eventually running).
  • I had to plan around "what if a seizure happens right now" for every workout — so solo, isolated workouts were out for a long time.
  • Mental health treatment (in my case, DBS finally being tuned correctly) mattered as much as diet/exercise. I didn't have the bandwidth to sustain habit changes until the depression eased.
  • I stopped trying to fix everything at once. Weight loss, seizure management, and mental health got worked on in sequence, not all simultaneously.

Now I'm training for the LA Marathon (March 2027) which felt like a joke a few years ago.

Happy to answer anything about training around a chronic neurological condition, or just the slow/nonlinear parts of the process nobody posts about.

Another update on my progress. (Down 73lbs)

I’m pretty high while writing this on my phone, so sorry if it isn’t as detailed as my last posts. Also sorry for the late update, I just didn’t really think there was much to talk about, so I hadn’t mentioned it till now.

I’m now down to 264lbs from 337lbs since the end of February this year (when I really decided to make changes). The highest I’ve ever weighed was 360 something pounds ~3ish years ago. For the most part I feel better physically, I don’t get abdominal pains nearly as much as I used to. I don’t have an update on the fibrosis, but I do plan to ask my doctor about scheduling a fibroscan during my next visit.

I’ve been a lot better mentally (when it comes to my physical health). I’m still eating about the same as I have been (although sometimes I eat more than I should when with friends).

If I had anything to say about my progress so far, is that although I’m happy and proud of my weight loss, I’d probably not advise others to do what I did (shocking I know). My diet could use a lot of work, I’m just lazy when it has to do with preparing food and I should exercise more consistently.

Something I’ve learned that really stuck with me, is that your nutrients are vital. Yes you may be dropping weight, but if your nutrient intake is way off, you’re going to have problems. Make sure you drink plenty of water, roughly a gallon a day (which I often don’t achieve).

That’s about all I have to say. Cya!

I can’t stop binge eating

I feel like such a freaking loser. I’ve been trying to lose weight but I CAN’T control my eating. I have no self discipline and when my family buys junk food, I can’t stop thinking about it until I binge eat. I want to lose 30 pounds but my diet is getting in the way of my goals.

I don’t know how to fight the food noise, to prioritize my weight loss goal over the short term relief of food. Does anybody have any tips? I’m desperate and have a horrible relationship with food. (Adding extra text so I can post this.)

Plateau advice

I’ve lost 40 lbs over the past 14 months (F 5’8” CW 158, age 58). I have always been muscular with a larger frame, so I don’t plan to lose more than 5-10 lbs. I’d be content at my current weight.

I track calories and work out 5-6 days per week, strength training and 30 min cardio. My current daily calorie goal is 1470, which is a 500 cal deficit. Thus far, weight loss has been pretty effortless. However, over the past 8 weeks I’ve hit a stubborn plateau. And over the past week or so, I’ve been unusually hungry. I’ve tried eating an extra 100-200 cals, but it’s persistent. I’ve been at a 500 cal deficit for the past 14 months.

Is my calorie count too low? Should I eat at maintenance for a while? Any advice is appreciated!

Did anyone else lose weight in/throughout their relationship?

Struggling to find any other Reddit posts about this anywhere. I used to weigh 160lbs as a 5’4 woman but after 2 years I finally got down to 120. When I first got into my relationship, I maintained between 120-125, jumping up to 130 around thanksgiving, Christmas, and new years, and then as the relationship progressed, I ended up actually hitting my lowest weight ever in my entire adult life even lower than I was ever in highschool, at about 113lbs.

I maintained 113lbs for about 8 months until we eventually broke up for other reasons. Since the breakup I have gone back up in weight and now swing between 125-130lbs. However, I have been eating fairly clean, making an effort to eat protein as I was trying to grow my glutes back, and I still workout 5 days a week. I do have more of a sweet tooth nowadays and will let myself indulge, but I simply cannot understand why it was so easy for me to maintain such a low weight when I was in this relationship? And it’s worth mentioning that when I was weighing 113lbs I was drinking alcohol almost every day, eating out often, and working out farrrrr less than I do now. I know the obvious answer would be to blame the relationship causing the weight loss but the relationship was fairly healthy too?

The reason I ask this question is because I am still trying to solve the puzzle or get back to the mindset I had when in this relationship. The mindset or state of being where I didn’t crave sweets and chocolate all the time, where I didn’t think of my next meal all the time, and could essentially eat/drink whatever I wanted in moderation and still weigh between 113-116lbs. Like it was sooooo easy back then. I barely ever felt hungry and when I did eat, it was to fuel my body rather than for enjoyment. I barely thought about the snacks I ate or how calorie-dense my dinner would be that night because it always balanced out somehow. And nowadays food and calories is all I think about, and I fear I keep gaining more and more weight and I can’t stop it. Any advice is welcome or any insight as to why this happened/why it was so easy to lose and maintain a low weight in a relationship, when most people gain weight in relationships?

Back on the weight loss journey!

Hey everyone, it’s been awhile since I’ve been on here but I lost about 25 pounds going from 150-125lb from late march-august of 2025. I was really happy and proud of myself yet I ended up losing too much and lost my appetite. Overtime as my freshman year of college ended I got it back and gained weight again and I am at 140ish rn maybe 145 right now. I’m feeling a bit discouraged about my weight again and it’s hard to start my deficit again even though I know it is possible, it’s just annoying losing the weight you previously lost once again. I’m happy that my mental health has gotten better as I am not going crazy over the fact that I gained weight again. Does anyone have any tips? Unfortunately im in my second year of college so eating is kind of hard when you live on campus and I have no clue what to eat besides just grilled chicken lol. I’m trying to find motivation to stay consistent but it’s hard :( thank you all. I’ll start my deficit Monday and continue to post about it so that way I can have something to motivate me. Realistically could I lose 10 pounds before Halloween as a 5’3 F? The good thing is I can get my 10k steps in more easily now!

Weight loss while recovering from Lipo 360

Hi guys, I got lipo 360 3 weeks ago and am currently in recovery for the next few months. Pre surgery I was 156 lbs, my waist was 37 inches, and my biggest area of insecurity has always been the area of my upper abdomen immediately below my bra line and around my ribs because even when I’m a healthy weight I tend to carry a stubborn fat roll around that area.

I have been a million weights and sizes and tried a million different things for weight loss, most effectively I started Wegovy in September 2024-September 2025 and went from 240 to 150 lbs. then insurance stopped covering it and I gained up to 175 lbs, so when I got coverage back in April 2026 and started back on it I was starting from 175, and weight loss has been much much slower.

Prior to me weighing 240 lbs, I had been 110 lbs, with a 23.5-24 inch waist and wore xs or xxs clothing. I felt good at that weight/size, and ideally I would like to get back to or get very close to that now. That was the only time in my life I didn’t have that upper abdominal spare tire of fat I hate so much, and I’m hoping me having the Lipo 360 will make it easier to eliminate that, but I know that I’m still needing to lose some weight to get back to the silhouette and proportions I feel best at.

Currently with all the post op swelling and edema my bra line is at 34 inches, waist at 36 inches, and I’m about to switch to a stage 2 size medium faja.

All this to say, when I was 110 before I was doing a lot of water fasting, OMAD, did 60-90 min cardio daily, and walked a trail with decent incline that was about 2 miles daily. Right now obviously I’m still recovering and not able to exercise as much as that, but I want to work my way up to that.

My question is, if I do a 60 min walk daily, do a water fasting 2x a week, and eat in a deficit could I realistically lose 35ish lbs by Christmas? I’m 152 lbs right now and ideally would like to be around 118-120 by then. Also, I had to stop Wegovy a month before my surgery but I’m starting back on it now so that will definitely help as far as appetite and with my hormones since I have PCOS. But I’m looking for tips to be able to reach 118-120 by Christmas working from where I am now and with me not able to do much weighted or strength training.

Be Honest (permanent weight loss in 30s after kids)

Hi all - I am 34F and 5 months postpartum. I currently weigh 185 lbs and I’m 5’5”.

I want to lose around 30-40 pounds and keep it off permanently. It seems like everyone I know who loses 30+ pounds always just ends up gaining it back later. I myself have yo-yoed a few times, even before kids.

It seems like once people gain weight, our bodies just want to default back to that no matter what. Especially women after pregnancies. And of course it’s going to be even harder now that I’m in my 30s vs when I was younger.

Has anyone in here successfully lost 30+ pounds AND kept it off for 5+ years? Does it eventually get easier to keep yourself at the lower weight?

I know that either way I need to be more active and try to lose the weight, but it just feels hopeless to be able to keep the weight off.

Crazy how much water affects progress

I admittedly don’t drink much water during the week, because my job quite simply doesn’t allow for frequent bathroom breaks and hydrating too much after work wrecks my sleep for obvious reasons. I’m 6 weeks deep in the weight loss process, and the following pattern has emerged:

Weekdays: scale stays the same, bathroom visits infrequent.

Saturday: drink a bunch of water and enjoy a leisurely pot of tea. Have to use the bathroom a ton of times for both reasons.

Sunday morning: miraculous scale drop that was hiding under all that water retention and constipation.

The moral of this story? If you can manage it in your daily life, stay hydrated! (If you’re a nurse or a teacher, I understand your pain.)

SW:186 lbs., CW 174 lbs. GW 150 lbs. Though the starting weight might be a tad affected by water retention as well.

I lost weight but I feel like I look bigger somehow

About two weeks ago I was feeling GREAT I looked amazing and I felt amazing and I felt like my body was finally getting to the point where I wanted my body to be,fast forward to now I’ve lost about five pounds and I feel like I look bigger.

I don’t know why this is happening and I feel like I look pudgier than I did two weeks ago even though I’ve dropped weight and I’ve been working on building muscles. I was 160 at the beginning of my weight loss journey, 123 two weeks ago, and I’m currently 118 but I feel like I look bigger than I did at 123 and I don’t know how that’s even possible. Does anyone know why this happens and how to fix it? I’ve been exercising and trying to tone up but I feel like my stomach has just gotten bigger and I looked better two weeks ago. Any help is appreciated <3

My weight loss journey is driving me crazy.

Current stats: f22, 5”4, 170lbs.

I started my weight loss journey 3 months ago and started at 185.9lbs.

In 3 months i’ve lost 16lbs which i’m really happy about. That’s a substantial amount of weight and i’m proud that i’ve actually stuck to this for so long.

Problem 1

Every day I have to make such a conscious effort around food. Being mindful is something that I just don’t want to live with. I mean that’s kind of what losing weight is but it’s not easy for me at all.

Problem 2

The scale fluctuates so much I don’t trust myself. Thinking logically, i’ve lost a decent amount of weight to know that I must be doing something right. But here’s the thing. I don’t eat the same amount of calories every day. On average I eat between 1400-1700 cals a day and I never go over 1700. I only notice the scale drop after eating at the lower end a few days in a row (1000 cals) . So it’s just a mind fuck because I keep thinking that I eat too much when the scale stays the same or increases for 2 weeks straight. Only when I have a small appetite for a few days the scale likes to drop.

Problem 3

I don’t feel like i’ve lost weight. The scale has dropped, my pants fit me better. But, I genuinely feel like I look the exact same. I don’t know why but that’s just how I feel.

Problem 4

I hate exercise. I work in an office full time so i’m very sedentary without exercise. I go to the gym 2-3 times a week. I try my best but I don’t think I work out hard enough. I’m just so exhausted and really don’t enjoy it but I guess it’s better than nothing.

Problem 5

Why does it take so long! I understand that it’s a full lifestyle change but, I feel like for all the hell I put myself through I wish that I could see faster results.

On a positive note…

Something that has changed for me is that I don’t crave as much junk anymore. My appetite has reduced and i’m not as tempted. I’m used to eating less now.

I’m posting this in the hopes to feel less alone in this. If anyone else has related to any of the points i’ve made I’d really love to hear your story. Or any advice.

I feel discouraged because I'm afraid of gaining weight due to the medication I'm on , can you relate?

So this year I lost a total of 50 lbs. i did a lot of cooking, tracker my calories, planned my meals ahead, and did a lot of walking. I lost weight very slowly and planned to do that. I want to keep the weight off and continue to lose more weight.

I had been on 5 mg of zyprexa for depression and have managed to lose weight on it. But recently my doctor increased the dosage to 7.5 mg of zyprexa. And my appetite has increased. I get the munchies and feel so hungry m. Even when I eat I don't feel full and continue to eat.

Has anyone had this trouble while on zyprexa or another antidepressant. Has anyone been able to lose weight on this antidepressant. What had been your experience with weight loss on these medications?

I will continue to walk, plan my meals, and track my calories. But it's difficult to curb my hunger on this medication. It sucks because the medication is helping my mood but I can't afford the weight gain. I won't feel good about myself if I gain all the weight back and will feel like my weight lose will be for nothing. What do you guys think ? Any encouragement or advice for me?

Any advice for a chronically ill girl??

For some context, I’m 23 years old suffering with chronic fatigue and chronic pain, I’m coming towards the end of my weight loss journey with only about 9 kilos to go and I’ve hit a bit of a situation.

I’m 165cm (5’5~) and seem to be stuck between 66-67kg (145-147) which puts me roughly bmi 24 and a bit, the reasoning for my goal weight being 58kgs is that was my weight prior to a medication I was put on which I’m slowly coming off of

Now my situation is:

- I’m very limited mobility at the moment, knee and foot pain is stopping me from walking anything above 5-6k steps a day

- Resistance training of any form, including body weight causes me to flare up.

- a 500 calorie deficit puts me just above 1200 which has been making me feel absolutely dreadful and caused me to be bed bound

I’ve been taught how to calorie count and log everything down to small bites, oils and any sauces and extras on my food.

Any tips on how I can just get this last little bit off?? Or is it worth just going extra slow?? ☺️☺️

How much has your current weight loss journey made you finally face your insecurities?

It took me a while but after chatting with a friend I finally came to a realization. I understood that my strong emotions of feeling like I will never be adequate enough for my husband but also others was not because the medication and weight loss. It is because I am finally having to face my own insecurities. Finally having to learn to love myself for who I am and not for who I will never be.

All these years of gaining weight steadily and not taking care of myself it was easier to hide within myself and not face my own realities. I had insecurities before and I chose to shove them down and pretend there wasn't a problem. Now I'm being forced to face them and come to a peace within myself. I haven't gotten there yet but hell if I'm not trying!

For those that have dealt with this as well how have you navigated and come out the other end? Some days it's incredibly hard and other days not as much. The bad days can be really bad though and I hope to learn to cope with those more. I haven't even considered giving up because of these feelings but I'd like to manage the stress better so I can continue on my journey in a healthy way!

Vent/Advice Wanted

25M. Early last year, I embarked on a pretty successful weight loss journey. I was counting calories, lifting and rucking 3 times a week, and it was working. My food noise was manageable, and I wasn't finding it hard to keep to my deficit. I got to the point where people were noticing the weight loss and making positive comments, something I've never experienced before.

After switching out rucking for running in my workout schedule, I developed pain in my knees. Patellar tendonitis, or something similar. I saw a PT specialist and was given exercises, but that setback completely destroyed my motivation. I neglected my PT exercises, and then I lost access to the gym I used. I became discouraged, probably depressed too, and I've wallowed in that for the better part of a year now, undoing all the progress I had made. I'm extremely upset at myself.

Now, I've fallen into a miserable cycle: Try to get back into a deficit, keep to it for a couple of days, binge, give up until next week. I want out. I want to return to where I was, making progress and feeling genuinely good about it, but I'm stuck. The upshot is I've started regularly doing the PT exercises that I should've been doing all along, but I'm really struggling to get the other pieces to fall into place.

weight loss help plssss

i am a 18yr old female who weighs 182lbs and 5ft5 who needs help on weight loss tips. I struggle sticking to calorie deficits due to sometimes eating too little calories causing me to eat over my deficit. However when add more calories i feel guilty almost like i am eating too many and overall just struggle with a calorie deficit.

I have struggled for years with my body image and feel as-if this time in my life is the worst i have felt and want to make a change but the motivation and discipline are hard to keep up with. I no longer want to let my weight consume me as all that is on my mind all day every day is the way i look and it becomes draining. I decide to starve myself but then become soo hungry and i binge and it’s just a vicious cycle.

please can somebody help out with their tips as it is all really starting to take a toll on me and my mental health.

Low Fat Diet

currently, i’m on a low fat diet due to being diagnosed with gallstones from rapid weight loss.

all im eating at the moment is plain pasta, plain chicken breasts and apples also ketchup to make things taste ok lol. but it’s just so boring and i would like to expand what i consume since i literally have to go out shopping every 3 days because i only eat 3 things.

also to mention im not the best cook, so if possible could you guys help me with low fat meal/snack options. around 5g fat meals and then 1-2g fat snack options. i know that might sound low or maybe it is im not sure ive never really dieted until now, ive just had eating disorders all my life lol. anyways i just dont want pain, its excruciating. i tried adding a chocolate protein drink into my diet the other day and it just made my tummy really uncomfortable every time i drank half of it. damn it was so good though, but 5g fat in a full bottle.

ANYWAYS, any help is appreciated! i go to see my surgeon on the 1st of october so hopefully after my surgery i can eat normally. also if i didnt mention already… im very picky and have sensory issues with mushy/gritty food. dont know how to explain it but i just dont like certain weird textures. i know it doesnt matter saying that since everyone’s mouths are different and what i might find mushy u might find normal or something. but yeah just wanted to put that out there. ok thank you!1!1!1!!!

Is it supposed to feel this hard?

So for context, I've been at a average 500 cal deficit, this is week 5.

I made an assumption that my maintenance is 2500 (5"5, 160lbs)

I've had 2 binge episodes so far, driving my average intake to 2100.

My average protein: 145g

My average step count is 9000, because I don't have as much activity in the weekends, my weekday count is more like 12,000.

I weight train 4 times a week, train grapppling 4-5 times a week (1hr 30min ish)

My weight progression so far has been very fluctuating, I started off at 161, I've seen 153, 157, 163, 158, my average weekly weight loss is around 0.7 pounds. (I know scale weight =/= fat loss)

I adhere to high volume diets and whole foods to keep my calorie counting accurate.

My carb sources: potatoes, squash, oatmeal

Protein (I avoid any super fatty meats to ensure accuracy): canned tuna, egg (mostly egg whites), chicken breasts, greek yogurt.

Fats: yolks, omega 3s, fats from oats.

Fiber: oats, onions, carrots, cucumbers, tomatos, strawberries.

Overall I feel absolutely horrible.

My sleep quality is non-existant, I keep waking up in the middle of the night and struggle to fall asleep (I take omega 3, melatonin, magnesium to help)

Everytime I eat I'm trembling physically a little bit from fear the meal won't make me feel full, and after I eat often times I enter in a "trance" where my body is screaming at me to binge.

I'm losing a lot of hair and eyebrow hair weirdly enough.

I often get the advice to up my fat intake, and which I experimented with, which just drives my appetite through the roof and makes my cut harder triggers my binges harder and any hormonal problems don't get resolved.

I try to go high volume - did a lot of soups, oats, veggie stirfry but doesn't seem to help much.

It's getting worse I can't concentrate on anything I do.

I just have to ask is it always this hard? Does it get any better from here? I don't understand how some people adhere to this. Any advice I'm open to, thanks.

My 11‑Year Weight Loss Journey

In 2015, my life changed in a way I never expected. A ruptured appendix landed me in the hospital, scared, exhausted, and weighing 352.8 pounds. Standing there in that gown, hooked up to machines, I felt like my body was shutting down and my denial was finally catching up with me. That moment became the dividing line between the life I had been living and the life I knew I needed to fight for.

What followed wasn’t a straight line. It wasn’t a dramatic transformation montage. It was eleven years of ups and downs, victories and setbacks, and more frustration than I ever thought I could handle. I tried everything, diets, programs, routines, promises. I showed up with commitment, discipline, and hope. And still, there were long stretches where nothing worked. The scale didn’t move. My body felt stuck. I felt stuck.

Those were the hardest moments. Not because I wasn’t trying, but because I was, fully, honestly, desperately. And it still felt like my body was fighting me every step of the way.

But I kept going.

There were times I made progress and felt lighter, stronger, and more connected to myself. And there were times I slipped backward, regained weight, lost motivation, or felt like I was starting from scratch. It wasn’t pretty. It wasn’t perfect. But it was real.

And I didn’t do it alone.

If it weren’t for the love of my family, my friends, and my incredible husband, I don’t think I would have made it to where I am today. They didn’t judge me. They didn’t push me. They didn’t love the “after” more than the “before.” They loved me, through every version, every setback, every restart. Their support kept me standing when I felt like collapsing. Their belief in me carried me through the moments when I didn’t believe in myself.

Today, in 2026, I stand at 190.2 pounds. That number represents far more than weight. It represents survival. It represents every tear, every restart, every morning I chose to try again. It represents the man who walked into a hospital in 2015 and decided, maybe without even realizing it, that he wasn’t done yet.

This journey wasn’t about perfection. It was about persistence. It was about love. It was about refusing to give up on myself, even when the world felt heavy.

And now, I finally get to live in the body I fought so hard for.

5 weeks in, 18.4 lbs down. Proud of myself and just getting started!

28M | 6’1” | SW: 346 lbs | CW: 327.6 lbs
Just wanted to share a little milestone because I’m genuinely proud of myself and the progress I’ve made so far.
I’m officially 5 weeks into my weight loss journey and down 18.4 pounds!
I’ve been using ChatGPT to help organize my workouts, track my weight increases at the gym, and come up with recipes so I’m not eating the same boring meals every day. I’ve also been using MyFitnessPal religiously to track everything I eat.
Currently averaging around 1,800–1,900 calories a day and hitting the gym 5 days a week. I’m focusing on losing fat while building muscle and getting stronger along the way.
I know 5 weeks isn’t a long time in the grand scheme of things, and I’ve still got a LONG way to go, but I’m really proud of what I’ve managed to accomplish in such a short period of time.
The biggest thing for me has been finding a routine I can actually stick to rather than trying to change everything overnight. Seeing the number on the scale go down while watching the weights I lift go up has been incredibly motivating.
Still a long road ahead, but for the first time in a while, I’m genuinely excited to see where I’ll be in another 5 weeks, 3 months, or even a year.
Just wanted to share a little win with people who understand the journey. Here’s to staying consistent!

Loose skin after moderate weight loss?

Hello! When speaking about loose skin, it’s almost always about people who were on the heavier side. It’s hard for me to find someone who had moderate fat loss to see how their skin behaved. For people who lost 25-35 kg, what were your results? Have you ever needed or wanted surgery?

I'm a bit anxious about it. I know I probably won't end up with a heavy apron belly, and even if I do, it'll be infinitely better than being overweight, especially at a young age when you usually care more about your body.

My stats: 24M, 190 cm (6'2-6'3), starting at 108 kg (240 lbs). CW:104kg GW:80-85 kg. People also say it's important how long the weight has been carried. I've been over 200 lbs for about 3 years now.

why does it seem like i defy the laws of thermodynamics

I am F:28 Height:5’7 (170cm) and my starting weight was 138kg (302lbs) now I am down 4-5 kg. I started my calorie deficit September 10 and I lost 6kg the first six days. I know it was mostly water weight but I was delighted to see the extreme weight loss on the scale and seeing that my efforts are working. Well, ever since September 16, my weight went back up to 134kg and the past 6 days it hasn’t been budging. It doesnt go up or down, it’s at 134 and it’s discouraging me from my weight loss journey. I am not on glp medications because my insurance doesn’t cover it so I am trying to do this on my own and I am showing immense resistance towards fast food and simple carbs and heavy amount of cheese like I was addicted to in my binge eating days, and it’s especially infuriating being away from my addiction and not even seeing results from it. The reason why my diets have always failed is because I get to this phase of the scale not budging and I have a fuck it mindset and start binging again because it angers me to be away from food I like but not reaping the benefits from it. On top of that I am insulin resistant and have pcos, so my body shape is hideous with weight on it because I don’t have fat “in all the right places” I have a big apron belly, fat neck and no butt. Some people are bigger than me but they accumulate the fat in a way where it looks flattering but it looks BAD on me and so that’s why I’m in a panic mode trying to change things but not being able to reap the benefits of my efforts. It is RIDICULOUS how I’m eating 1300-1600 calories a day and walking and seeing the number go up, or not move. I am angered right now and thinking of binging.

My new weight loss plan!! 2026-2027.

F31, SW: 320. CW: 256. GW: 210/200.

So my first goal weights would be to get down to 210/200 lbs!!

Then I would like to get under 200 lbs NEXT year!! Definitely. I would even like to be at 180/160 lbs before next summer as well. Then eventually 150-120 lbs. I don’t necessarily want to be too underweight, But is the main goal here. I’m so tired of being this fat. I really don’t like myself just yet for letting myself go this far. I know that it’s not entirely my fault though, Nobody was there to say “That’s enough.” But it’s also no one’s at fault, Either. If you know what I mean.

I just really want to lose all of this weight and I really feel like the end of this year towards 2027 will be my year!!

So, I plan to start working out more in my bedroom, To workout more on the gym machines downstairs, As we do have an at home treadmill and a bike, I also try to go for daily walks but I would like to start doing that on my own again as well. I also plan to go to the YMCA gym twice a week, Until they can approve of my going 4 times a week again, I’m still working on that and I got a meeting coming up soon so I will definitely be mentioning that as well.

I mostly do my workouts on YouTube, For now. I just really need to start waking up earlier in the morning and every morning to do them.

I’m also trying to do other healthy habits such as reading daily again, & Maybe more journaling & Drinking more water.

That’s all. Wish me luck & Positive vibes only! Happy Monday! ☕️🍵

What do you do to keep things fun?

Hey!

So I just met with my wellness coach and we came up with a few ways to keep things "fun." Examples include:

  • Listen to a podcast and run
  • Listen to a podcast and stretch
  • Walk and read
  • Read outside on my lunch break instead of circle the vending machine at work
  • meditate and stretch
  • come up with realistic goals. Right now, I have "do one pull up or dip before January first."

We came up with this after talking about how weight loss should not be "miserable" and things should be "fun."

Question: What do you do to keep things fun?

Finally down to 60kgs, after being stuck at 64kilos for several months 🥹

41F, SW- 76, Cw-60, GW: 58.
Medical history: Hypothyroidism
Insulin Resistance, PCOS.

I finally reached 60 Kgs in just two months. While I don’t track calories, I maintain a detailed list of factors that contribute to bloating, weight gain, and other issues. I occasionally walk, but my weight loss primarily stems from my low carb, high protein diet.

I hit a plateau between 64 and kgs for over 5 to 6 months, and I was curious about the reasons behind it. Then, I incorporated intermittent fasting into my routine. I finish dinner by 7 p.m. and break my fast the next day at around 11 a.m. Occasionally, if I’m feeling particularly hungry, I have a cup of tea and a fiber rich, low glycemic fruit early in the morning and then head straight to lunch. I also indulge in a few cashews and dried grapes when I feel like snacking, but that’s only once a day.
I drink two cups of tea a day. No sweets whatsoever.

It’s funny how you have to devise different strategies, essentially tricking your body by making minor adjustments to your routine. For instance, I’ve increased my afternoon intake since I skip breakfast, but that empty stomach in the morning was all my body needed to cause the scale to move.

Scale Stuck at 150; Help!

Hi all! I (20F) started my weight loss journey this year. I started at 188lbs in January, and am currently down to 150lbs. I'm super happy about the weight I've lost, but I would be overjoyed if I could be around 130lbs by the end of this year.

Since June, I've been in a calorie deficit, and not a small one. Most days, I'm usually at -1000 to -800 calories; I track my food very closely by doing about 90% of my cooking at home, and I track my calories burned with my Garmin (I have a Lily 2.) I've been making steady progress since June (170 --> 150) by tracking and going to the gym, and for the month of August, took a break from working out/lifting since I came back to college. I was still losing weight, and decided to go back to working out.

I've been working out consistently since the start of September, consistently going 6x a week; I acknowledge that some people may say that's too much, but I genuinely love going to the gym and it's usually the highlight of my day. I don't just go to lose weight. I've found it's impacted my mental health more positively than anything else I've tried (I've struggled with depression for the last several years), I like being able to go and get stronger, and overall I enjoy feeling healthier. However, since going, the scale hasn't tipped at all-- in fact, it's gone up, from 147lbs on the 1st of September to 151 today. I love going, but it's so frustrating (and confusing) to not see the number budge despite the extra effort I'm putting in.

Some extra things to note: I've been taking creatine lately, which I know can affect weight. For working out, I generally do light cardio, 4-5 lifts, and I tend to hit 10K steps a day. I know weight loss is a long haul, not a short trek, but before this month, I was seeing my weight go down at least 1-2 pounds a week.

Does anyone have advice, words of solace, or anything in between? Thank you!

Feeling dizzy and nauseous during my calorie deficit

I’m currently trying to lose ~10 kg and I’m a little unsure whether I’m doing something wrong with my calorie deficit.

I was on vacation for a week about two weeks ago. After coming home, I started my diet on September 9th. I had quite a lot of water retention from the vacation, especially in my feet, so I know that some of the weight loss is probably just water.
Since starting my deficit, I’ve lost around 2.5 kg in total. I currently weigh 79.9 kg at 1.69 m.

I’m not completely sure about my maintenance calories, but I would estimate that my normal daily expenditure is somewhere around 2,300–2,400 calories. Over the last two weeks it was probably even lower because I’ve still been off work and spending most of my time at home.

For activity, I currently:
● Go to the gym 3x per week and do strength training
● Average around 4,000 steps per day

The thing I’m concerned about is that since around Tuesday this week, I’ve been feeling really bad. I’m constantly nauseous and have basically no appetite. Whenever I stand up, my vision goes completely black for a moment and I feel really strange/dizzy.
I also currently can’t really be a passenger in a car because I get extremely nauseous and feel really weird while riding.

I’m wondering if this could be related to my calorie deficit. Maybe I’m not drinking enough, maybe my deficit is too large, or maybe I’m missing something else.

Has anyone experienced something similar while dieting? I’d especially appreciate advice on whether these symptoms could be caused by an aggressive deficit, dehydration, electrolytes, etc., and whether I should increase my calories for a while.

I know the initial 2.5 kg loss is probably partly water weight, so I’m not expecting that rate of loss to continue.

Edit:
Current macros are mostly around 1800-2000 cal, 100g protein and 70g fat

I think it's maintenance time

We're coming up on the year anniversary of starting my serious weight loss journey.

I've been eating between 1200 and 1300 calories a day for nearly a year, but I'm at my goal size, just a few pounds shy of my goal weight. And today I treated myself, ate nearly 1600 calories. I'm half terrified that I've opened a door that I can't close, and half excited that I might be able to ease up on such an extreme CICO.

Anyone who is in maintenance, how do you transfer safely from losing to maintaining? Without accidentally going too far and gaining again? Right now I weigh myself in the morning before I leave or in the evening when I come home, trying to find my normal or average weight range now. I know it fluctuates a bit.

For context, I'm 33F 146lbs and mostly sedentary but I do pilates 3x a week for strength and mobility.

Question about rules :)

Hey everyone, I myself am currently on a weight loss journey after years of eating disordered weight gain. I’ve gotten much further than I had anticipated before, but I’ve noticed that my motivation is dwindling and my will to keep going is getting smaller

I’ve had the idea of posting weekly weight updates to a public space to keep me motivated. Somehow the thought of others getting to judge me if I don’t continue on my journey will surely motivate me.

I am, however, unsure if such a thing is permitted in this subreddit. If anyone knows the rules better than me (English isn’t my first language so I often misinterpret written language more frequently) and is reading this then I would appreciate a nice response

Thank you in advantage and a good evening tk anyone reading :)

Help & Advice? - 5'6F, 150lbs to 125lbs

Hello,
I'm currently fluctuating 148-152lbs, but I am hoping to lose 25lbs before my sister's wedding. I've always been on the heavier side, and although I know it is largely self image, all of the other bridesmaids are extremely skinny so I do not want to be standing out as I'm sure these photos I'll continue to see throughout my life. Before the summer I had been able to get down to 145lbs, but unfortunately due to summer activities such as a cruise I am back where I started. Food has always been a reward or emotional comfort tool for me, I remember within my childhood often if I was sad the answer was here's a nice homecooked meal and sugar.

For those who love food is there any recipes you suggest/how do you overcome this? Any general weight loss advice for this would be greatly appreciated. In addition any suggestions on incoporating exercise would be amazing, as I struggle to find exercise I enjoy & stick to--I have an open basketball on fridays, but outside of that I'm very inactive.

20lbs down

I (34 5’5” 258lbs) have a long history of weight loss and weight gain. At 16 I weight between 220/230, by 19 I was 130, so a total loss of 100lbs in three years. I developed an eating disorder at the 130 mark and worked to normalize at a healthy weight range of 160-75, I have a muscular and curvy build and was unhealthy at 130.

For years I managed the healthy range, sometimes dipping a little higher but mostly keeping it off and progressing my exercise. For health/medication reason I ended up gaining a fair amount of weight after age 30.

Fast forward, I just had a baby. I conceived of my daughter at 225, but a very healthy and muscular 225. Still, too high. By the time I was nursing her, my weight crept to 278, an unfathomably difficult and high number for me to reconcile.

I have finally lost 20lbs from there due in most part to diet and exercise. I’m so happy to have finally achieved this and am hoping I can make it back to 200. I can’t imagine I’ll ever get back to 160/75 but if I did that would be an incredible accomplishment. Excited and motivated to keep going!

I just gotta complain about this stupid weight loss.

So some boring but somewhat important stuff: Male, 30, 5'10 (178cm) going for a more feminine appearance and thus trying to get to 150 (68kg) pounds.

I started at 200 pounds (90kg)

Currently at 170. (77kg)

Now, I was more focused on getting my diet right with a nutritionist, way more than weight because I knew I'd take it too far. (body image issues, you all know how it is.) We worked out a good diet and I'm the type of guy who works well with a "Eat this, this, and this, and nothing but." type of diet. So two protein shakes, a high fiber cereal, two yogurts, some chia seeds, some fish oil pills, a good mixed salad, and occasionally a fiber bar to round it all at out and I was hitting like, 1500 calories eaten a day. Great! Not the point but great!

Months passed, got down to 170 pounds. I was overjoyed. All I needed was 20 more pounds to get to my goal and then really start the refinement process of turning my body into a more athletic feminine build.

Then the progress stalled out, hard. No more going down. In fact, I noticed it even went up a pound or two (in a more permanent way).

Then I did mathhhhh. Fucking mathhh. So according to the TDEE calculator, at 200 pounds, I was burning 2200 calories by breathing. Accordingly, at 170, apparently, I'm burning 1700 calories by breathing. Which means with my daily calorie intake of 1500 or so, went from a 700 deficit, to a 200 deficit. Except of course, some days I eat that 600 calorie burrito on top of my diet... which sets me back three days in total. Awesome.

Then I did so much more math. It takes, according to some general science, roughly 3500 calories of burn to equal 1 pound of permanent loss. That means it would take me 18 days (roughly) to loss 1 pound if I never cheated on my diet or 360 days (basically a year) to lose 20 pounds. Awesome. Unacceptable.

So then I of course, figured out a workout routine. I like walking. Walking is fine. Walking to the local gym and back takes roughly 3 hours total. My plan was, and is, to walk from here to gym, 4 days out of the week. (The other three days I have prior obligations so I can't do it every day). Okay sure. Ah, but wait, I did more math. After calculating my walking speed, distance, time, age, height, and all that nonsense in a calculator, it spat out that I burned roughly 600 calories from walking 3 hours. Times 4, thats 2400 calories for a week. Times 4, thats (roughly), 9600. Add in the 200 per day being burnt from diet and you get 15,600 burn. Divided by 3500 and you get 4.4 pounds per month. Or roughly 1 pound a week of fat loss. Or 5 months to lose 20 pounds if I walk 12 hours a week, 48 hours a month, and never cheat on my diet. Ughhhhh.

And before anyone is like "ah man, what about [this exercise instead]" I like walking. I can't guarantee I'll do [insert exercise] 4 times a week for even an hour but I can guarantee I can at least theoretically do the walking through a trail or in the woods for three a day.

Then comes the worry post my weight target. Like at 150, I'll be burning like 1650. The plan was always to stick to this diet permanently considering it A. tastes good and B. hits a lot of my nutrition and then add another meal on top. Because 'Everyone burns 2000 calories a day'. How foolish I was to think so. So if I do that, I'll suddenly undo all the progress I spent working towards my athletic goal. Which means I can either A. Really take up exercise as a hobby, like, really really take it up as a hobby or B. Get really used to eating my current diet and not anything else ever again if I want to maintain my ideal aesthetic figure.

What an annoyance.

(Yes I know all the math could be wrong, the calculators seem to want to give me different information for no reason, but it really painted a picture to me that this is going to take forever.)

Have I been too severe with my weight loss?

Hey all,

Just hoping to get some outsider perspective on what I’ve been doing and whether my progress has been healthy. Sorry if the title isn’t great, I wasn’t sure what to put. I’ve gotten a lot of conflicting information from different sources throughout the process so far, and I figure people on this sub might have a more concrete answer.

Stats:
23 year old male
6’2
Currently 195lbs
“Lightly Active” lifestyle — 50-60 hours of work per week requiring light activity, as well as strength training when I can fit it in, typically 2 hours per week. The core of my strength training is high weight low reps, so short bursts.

Progress so far:
I have been seriously dieting for just about 2 months now. I did not have a scale until 6 weeks ago, and at that point I was ~210. This puts me at 15 lbs lost in 6 weeks, above the “healthy limit”.

Now that I’ve written out all that info, my absolute biggest issue is that I think I may be taking it too aggressively. I practice a 21:3 fast as it is suitable to my lifestyle, and I have also found that I have a persistent hunger craving between meals if I eat multiple smaller ones throughout the day. I eat the bulk of my calories at the beginning of the window, and then I consume a protein shake at the end of the window.

My daily caloric intake is ~1800. This is where I think I may have gone wrong. For whatever reason I was under the impression that my maintenance calories were ~2300, and as such was maintaining a 500 calorie deficit. Today I used the Mayo Clinic calorie calculator to see if I needed to slightly lower my intake to account for the 15 lbs lost, and was shocked to see that the estimate for my current stats is 2750 calories per day maintenance? This would seem to suggest that I have been maintaining a deficit of 1000 calories every day for 2 months.

If this is true, I would say that I have been fine on the deficit. My energy has been fine, my hunger cravings have been extremely limited (possibly hidden by an unrelated medication), and I haven’t had any issues until now.

My biggest concern at this point is that I haven’t lost any meaningful weight in a week. I have bounced +/- 0.5 lbs, which is unusual for me. During the journey I have been able to see consistent weight loss throughout the week. I do not know enough about weight loss to assess this, but I am worried I may have accidentally overdone it and ended up plummeting my metabolism. The only other major change has been that my biceps and triceps suddenly got wayyyy bigger, so maybe the water retention in my muscles has skyrocketed? Not sure what that would indicate.

I’m sorry for the long post, but to summarize my questions into a TLDR of sorts:
- What seems to be the accurate maintenance calories?
- Was my deficit too aggressive up to this point?
- Why has my weight loss seemingly stopped, even while maintaining the same diet?
- Is my metabolism shot? If so, what are the steps to repair it?
- Why are my biceps suddenly way bigger and firmer?

Thank you all so much for your time and consideration. If there is any other information I can give that would help, please let me know :)

Update!

I made a post a while back (Maybe a month or two) about getting into a calorie deficit and cutting out meat. Since then I've lost 13 pounds!

I did have a week in there where I started over eating again, but I got myself back on track. I've avoided meat almost entirely since I last posted!

I'm so so so proud of myself and I've learned a few things as well:

1: The current cultural obsession with protein is kind of unnecessary.

The fact that every product has little text bubbles on it bragging about how much protein it has, led me to believe that it must be REALLY hard to get enough protein. I was super worried about how I was going to get enough protein without meat. Well it turns out that nearly everything has at least a little protein in it (avocados, pasta, ect.) and I only really need like 70 grams a day based on body weight. As long as I remember to a eat a good amount of eggs, beans, or a fake burger I'm usually fine. I was counting grams of protein for probably the first two weeks or so but now that I know how much protein is in most of the foods I eat I just eyeball it.

2: Eating a big breakfast because it's the most important meal of the day is such a scam lol.

Ok so this one is my opinion and it probably doesn't apply to everyone BUT I find that I'm much more hungry after like 4pm. Eating a bunch before that leaves me with very few calories for dinner or dessert, which is when I want to eat the most.

3: Giving up on the whole day because you over ate is a trap.

I know this one will be obvious to a lot of people but I when I tried to lose weight in the past I had a horrible issue with overeating and then just giving up and eating whatever I wanted for the rest of the day. I heard someone online explain weight loss in terms of weekly deficits rather than daily and it really helped me. Essentially what matters is generally eating less, one day won't have that big of an effect on your weekly weight loss. However if you eat like 4000 calories that day it probably will throw you off lol, so just set a different goal for that day (like 2000 instead of 1700) and just move on with your life. All is not lost, one day of overeating won't ruin your week, but binging will.

Struggling to lose weight

I am 193 pounds 5”3 20F. When I started my weight loss journey two years ago I started at 195 pounds in about five months I lost 30 pounds taking me down to 165 pounds. since then, I’ve mostly maintained that usually weighing in around 170 pounds but in May, I went through a really hard break up and I stopped going to the gym and looking after what I ate. I ended up deciding to get things back on track and I re-weighed in at 187 pounds and since then I’ve been in a calorie deficit and aiming for going to the gym around three times a week however I weighed in today at 193 pounds. I’m feeling really defeated and like nothing I’m doing is working.

Tips for weight loss as a picky eater?

Hello…

I’m 28F, 5’6”, and right around 200lbs. I want to lose weight and I count calories, but I tend to fall off with that quite often. My main issue is that I’m a pretty picky eater and don’t really eat many foods that are considered healthy. In addition to weight loss, I am of course concerned about my health (cholesterol, blood sugar, etc.) but so many foods are a turn off.

Does anyone who is a very picky eater have any suggestions? I think it’s a texture thing mostly.

The only fruit I like is bananas and apples, but I will suffer through grapes.

I don’t really like raw veggies at all… except spinach.

I like broccoli, Brussels sprouts, potatoes, corn, peas, carrots, green beans, bell peppers (kinda), most bean varieties… and I think that’s it.

I don’t eat seafood.

As you can tell, I’m very much a meat and carbs kind of person. I also have a hard time with veggies because if they aren’t cooked perfectly I don’t like them. If anyone has any suggestions, please tell me! I’m so tired of going on a grocery shopping spree, but getting tired of the “healthy food” after a week.

I've tried being healthier/more active many times and always lose motivation a couple of weeks in. How to build a weight-loss/exercise routine without losing motivation?

Okay, so I (26f) am very short (152cm/4'10), so even a bit of weight gain really shows up in my physique. Despite this, Ive always been somewhat healthy and had around 52kg (115 pounds) all my adult life. This year, however, was a rough one and I gained 7kg (16 pounds). Now, I know this might not sound a lot but I feel awful, this is the heaviest Ive ever been and I want to change this.

About me: Im very good at wanting to change my life, downloading fitness apps, getting a gym membership, going for 2 runs in a week, counting calories for 3 days, and then giving up and not caring for the rest of the year. What Im terrible at is actually keeping up with this hobby/routine for more than 2 weeks. I dont even know why I quit, I just do, and it's very frustrating.

Today, I again decided to change my life and do better. I went for a run for the first time in months (5km/3miles, so not a lot, but better than nothing). I downloaded a calorie counting app but Im probably terrible at logging the food (will I get better with time?) because it says I ate 1000 calories all day, which I dont believe to be true at all. I got a gym subscription which starts in the weekend. But now, I need help in actually keeping this up.

There's that saying that to build a habit you need to do it for 21 days. I have some habits that I forced myself to do for weeks and now I cant imagine not doing (reading every night, washing my face, doing skincare...). But with diets/exercise, I just always seem to fail and its so frustrating, cause I obviously have no one to blame but myself.

So my questions are:

  1. How did you build your habit and how do you keep it up, even in bad days/periods of your life?

  2. When dieting, how do you ensure you dont lose the necessary nutrients and only cut on more useless nutrients? Im not an expert and I have no money to go to a nutritionist, so I dont know what foods I can cut or do in smaller portions.

  3. What apps do you use that helped? I love goodreads or letterboxd for tracking books and movies and in my perfect world an app like this exists for weight loss. But Ive tried a few and they just dont motivate me, theyre too complicated or all the cool things are beyond a paywall.

Thanks!

Want to see a transformation in a month… need advice

So I’m 20F, want to just get kickstarted for motivation on my weight loss journey. I weigh 80kgs rn, even though I don’t look it too obviously (maybe because of my anti anxiety meds, it affects the water retention etc). I want to just look slimmer and healthier overall. I have a clear jawline waist n all, just my lower body needs work.

I joined the gym and planning to do:
2 days of hyrox training
2 days of strength
2 days of kickboxing or Zumba

Calories consumed everyday will be around 1500-1600

Will also be walking 10k steps 3 days a week minimum

Any advice or help you can give or suggestions on how to make my plan better? Thanks.

Edit: goal is to reach atleast 76-75 kgs by 30 days. Starting tomorrow. Wish me luck

Realizing that cake is just not worth it

I started my weight loss journey in July by cutting most added sugar and junk food and it had already helped a lot (before I could easily eat a package of cookies in a day). But sometimes I would eat a bit of chocolate or cake, it's fine, whatever.

I don't always count calories because I'm lazy af, I just try to be mindful of calorie-dense foods, eat a lot of salads and protein. Today, however, I logged in my breakfast (unsalted cottage cheese with a banana, a teaspoon of cocoa powder and a bit of vanilla extract) — 237 calories, pretty filling and dessert-adjacent.

Then at work my colleague, who is going on maternity leave, brought a cake and I decided to eat a small slice. 60 gram, 235 calories, very tasty but gone in less than a minute. And now I just want more cake. So pointless lmao and not satisfying at all.

Of course I knew cake is basically empty calories. But it was insightful to eat who meals with equal calories back to back and observe how they make me feel.

Is the slimmer in the morning effect a good sign?

Currently I am at the start of week 4 of my calorie deficit, as well as working out at the gym (5 days a week). I weigh myself weekly, so at the end of week 3 I went from 239.7lb to 230.8lb. The end of my week 3 progress photo showed me barley slimmer than I was at the start, which is perfectly fine cause I know weight loss takes an extremely long time. However the next morning for the first time ever I was noticably slimmer in the morning before returning to my normal appearance. I know that its a result of loss of water overnight, and an empty stomach, etc. But this has happend consistently for two days now, so I was wondering if that was possibly a good sign that my calorie deficit and my new exercise routine is working. Since im an overthinker and keep wondering if what I am doing is working or not.

1 step forward, 2 steps back

29 Y/O Male 6’1” 275lbs for reference.

Looking for advice

I’ve practiced the art of calorie tracking for roughly 11 years. I’ve had success and I acknowledge it works however I have never managed to stick to a calorie deficit for longer than 3-4 months. I’ve never leaned out to the point where I’ve revealed my ab muscles but I’ve been in above average shape in my early 20s as a result of weight training and tracking calories.

I’ve tried all the fads and exercises. I’ve kept it stupid simple as well. 2-3 times a year I make an attempt at weight loss but it seems that I never manage to sustain this as a lifestyle. This has been going on for years and although I plan to keep trying, I’m starting to feel hopeless. I feel as if I may never reach my goal. I’ve even started to gain interest in GLP-1s because I’ve heard others share stories of their success after struggling for years. Am I making a mistake by even considering these medications? Or should I take the leap and give it a try? Does anyone have any wisdom or similar experiences that might resonate with me?

Frustrated with the last 15 lbs

I (39F) lost 20 lbs earlier this year by weighing all my food, logging it in my fitness pal, walking every day, and drinking tons of water. I plateaued for a couple weeks so decided to take a break from weight loss and get comfortable with a maintenance diet for a while.

Fast forward 4 months later. I was able to keep all that weight off so I decided to start up the diet again to lose the last 15 lbs. I’ve been doing everything EXACTLY the same- same routine, same daily calories, the only difference is I’m now working out 4x per week. It’s been three weeks and I have not lost a single pound. I can’t wrap my head around it and I’m getting so discouraged! Does anyone have suggestions or a possible explanation for what’s going on??

Dancing Queen

Hellooooo everyone

In February I weighed 102 kg (225 lb). I’m now around 76 kg (168 lb) at 172 cm (5’8”) so I’ve lost about 26 kg/57 lb in roughly 6 months.

The problem is that I lost the weight in a particularly unhealthy or unsustainable way.

Over the past several months I got heavily into the techno/party scene. At my peak I was going out 2–3 times a week sometimes dancing for 6–7+ hours straight and sometimes going to afterparties until 10 or 11 AM. There were periods where I was probably dancing for 18+ hours per week.
At the same time I started using drugs including Molly/MDMA, ketamine and other substances and I was also smoking a lot of cigarettes.

I wasn’t intentionally starving myself. In fact I used to be someone who ate quite a lot especially when stressed or angry. But my appetite basically disappeared. Even foods I used to LOVE especially fast food stopped appealing to me.

So obviously the combination of much more physical activity, partying, substances and having very little appetite resulted in a huge amount of weight loss.
I also suspect I’ve lost some muscle along the way. My legs are relatively muscular from all the dancing but otherwise I feel like I’ve lost a lot of muscle as well as fat.

I’m trying to slow everything down now. I’ve gone from partying several times a week to roughly once a month over the last few months. I’m also trying to reduce my drug use although I’m struggling with that part because I find it very difficult to say no when I’m in that environment.

My biggest fear now is what happens when my appetite comes back and I stop partying/drug use?

I’m currently very close to what I consider my goal weight. At 172 cm and 76 kg, my BMI is around 25.7. I’d need to lose roughly 2–3 kg to get below the standard BMI “overweight” cutoff. Ideally I’d like to eventually be around 70 kg but I’m much more concerned about maintaining a healthy weight than getting there as quickly as possible.

I also realized how dramatic the change has been because my parents live in Canada and I only see them about twice a year. My mom saw me in March and then again in July and she was genuinely shocked by how different I looked because I’d lost so much weight.

So I have a few questions:

Has anyone here experienced significant weight loss because of substance use, loss of appetite or an extremely active lifestyle and then stopped/reduced the substances or lifestyle that caused it?

Did your appetite come back?
Did you gain weight afterward?
If you did how much?
Were you able to maintain most of the weight loss?
How did you rebuild your appetite and eating habits?
Did you need to follow a specific diet or exercise routine?
And did you regain muscle after getting back to a more normal lifestyle?

I’m not looking for advice on how to continue losing weight through drugs or partying quite the opposite. I know that this isn’t a healthy way to lose weight and I’m trying to move away from it.

I’m mainly scared that I’ve accidentally lost a huge amount of weight through a lifestyle that I can’t/shouldn’t maintain and that once my appetite and normal routine return I’ll immediately gain everything back.
I’d really appreciate hearing from anyone who has been through something similar.
Be safe ! Love you all 🫶

What’s a weight-loss “rule” you believed for years that turned out to be BS?

Mine was thinking one bad meal meant I already “ruined the day” 😂
I’d eat something off plan and basically say screw it, I’ll start again tomorrow. Then one meal would turn into a whole day of eating whatever because I felt like the damage was already done.
Eventually I realized one meal barely matters compared with what I do the rest of the week. Getting back to normal at the next meal helped me way more than trying to be perfect all the time.
I’ve also changed my mind on a lot of the little rules people repeat around weight loss. Stuff like certain foods being automatically bad, having to eat at certain times, or thinking every day has to be perfect.
What’s one weight-loss rule you used to believe that you completely changed your mind about?

Weight loss advice

I am a 20 year old women , 206 pounds, 5’7. I have let myself go these past couple of months. I want to lock in and be consistent and disciplined. I have so much good noise. I have 23 days to lose weight/fat for a family get together. I just want to feel more confident and look a little slimmer. I want to lose at least 10 pounds. I know it probably won’t be sustainable in the long run but I just need it for this vacation. Has anyone done this before does it seem possible? Thanks in advance and if you have nothing helpful to say pls….dont. lol.

Thermodynamics is real, and you can’t argue with it

Today I’m down 90lbs from my heaviest weight. I’m 7lbs from just being “overweight”. I’ve been obese for over 30 years. I’ve tried so many “diets” it’s not even funny. There were a lot of fad diets in the early 90s that my parents put me on. Since becoming an adult I’ve tried hcG, Atkins, keto, vegetarian diets, and at least half a dozen more random ones. I always gave up because I hated what I had to eat. People talk about how hard it is restricting what you eat. I agree, it really is.

I’ve learned in the last two years that what you eat matters less than how much you eat. I see all kinds of garbage about “clean eating” (whatever the hell that means, I blame Panera) or only eating whole foods. That’s garbage. You can do those things and still not lose weight if you are not in a deficit. You can also eat whatever you like (within reason) and still lose weight, as long as you are in a deficit. I eat out, I eat fast food, I enjoy desserts. I just set myself a weekly calorie goal and cycle my intake to not exceed that and I lose weight. I do prioritize protein because I’m also building muscle, but the key is knowing what you’re putting in your body and how much of it.

The other saying is also true: most weight loss is in the kitchen, not the gym. I do strength training 2-3 times a week, max. I don’t spend more than an hour each session. I also walk 1.5-2.5 miles 3-5 times a week. But that’s it. I don’t kill myself. I don’t spend 3-4 hours a day.

You can’t do it if you don’t know how much you consume. And you can’t guess. I am fairly meticulous with my calorie tracking, but it is definitely harder when you eat out (can’t really break out the scale at Black Angus). But it can be done.

Also one side note: GLP-1s can help, but that’s it. They can’t do it for you. I actually got to my heaviest while on a GLP-1 (I’m diabetic). I’ve been on them for 7 years. I’ve lost the vast majority of my weight in the last 18 months. But only because I decided what was important and knuckled down. I’ve still got probably 30lbs until I’m happy, but I feel better than I have for decades.

One other caveat: medications can mess with your progress. At suggestion of my doctor I removed one of my medications and my insulin resistance went up and I plateaued for almost six months, despite being in a deficit. Once that was resolved I started losing again.

I didn't even lose that much weight and the life changes have been crazy

I don't think it's entirely down to weight loss, as my starting weight wasn't that high, but, I lost ~2 dress sizes (solid size 10 to largeish size 6), so it's not insignificant. But I think the bigger changes came from eating better and getting fit. I no longer feel tired from opening heavy doors. Yesterday I made whipped cream by hand and my arms aren't even sore today. I have way more mental energy, so I've been picking up hobbies that I wouldn't engage in before (brain games, world news, language learning). Walking and exercising a lot has had a huge positive impact on my mood (and cutting out added sugars), so I feel way more calm and happy all the time. Having better mood made me more motivated to work on myself, so I started looking for self-help materials and I am much better at advocating for myself now. It probably doesn't hurt that people do treat you a bit nicer when you're down 2 dress sizes. The positive transformation of my life has been wild.

There are a few downsides too - I kind of lost a close friend in this process because I was getting much healthier and they were not, and while part of it is I got fit and they did not (and they have a lot of barriers preventing them from getting healthier so I'm not blaming them), I think the bigger part is my mental landscape just looks so different compared with how it was a year ago.

So, I sort of just want people to know if you stick with it - eating better and getting more fit, it can really transform your life. People talk a lot about the outside changes, but if you change your outsides the insides can also change a lot as well.

Cheat meals?

I started my weight loss journey earlier this year, I started at 262 lbs and now weigh 202. Im 5'7, 25, male, and have been eating 1500 calories a day for 5 months.

I dont do cheat days. But, its starting to mentally wear on me and id like to be able to go out to eat with my spouse, friends, family and not worry about tracking, or if I do track, how much is it acceptable to go over my 1500? I dont know.

How often do you have a cheat day? Cheat meal? Do you allocate calories so you can eat more on the weekends?

Tell me what you do or what you suggest.

Why is nobody noticing my weight loss?

I’m not looking for compliments. I promise I’m not. I’m just surprised that no one has said anything at all. I’m down 54 pounds since April. I’m a woman who went from 278 pounds to 224 pounds. I’ve been doing calorie counting, cardio, weight lifting, doing this the healthy way. I went from a size 20-22 to currently in a size 14. I’ve even lost a shoe size!

I’m just baffled that no one has said a word. Even a negative word! Just some type of acknowledgement. Is this weird? Am I being odd for asking this. I’ve lost weight in the past and people have said things, both positive and negative. But at least they saw it. I’m just wondering if people even see it on me now.
