Day 1? Starting your weight loss journey on Friday, 06 March 2020? Start here!

Today is your Day 1?

Welcome to r/Loseit!

So you aren’t sure of how to start? Don’t worry! “How do I get started?” is our most asked question. r/Loseit has helped our users lose over 1,000,000 recorded pounds and these are the steps that we’ve found most useful for getting started.

Why you’re overweight

Our bodies are amazing (yes, yours too!). In order to survive before supermarkets, we had to be able to store energy to get us through lean times, we store this energy as adipose fat tissue. If you put more energy into your body than it needs, it stores it, for (potential) later use. When you put in less than it needs, it uses the stored energy. The more energy you have stored, the more overweight you are. The trick is to get your body to use the stored energy, which can only be done if you give it less energy than it needs, consistently.

Before You Start

The very first step is calculating your calorie needs. You can do that HERE. This will give you an approximation of your calorie needs for the day. The next step is to figure how quickly you want to lose the fat. One pound of fat is equal to 3500 calories. So to lose 1 pound of fat per week you will need to consume 500 calories less than your TDEE (daily calorie needs from the link above). 750 calories less will result in 1.5 pounds and 1000 calories is an aggressive 2 pounds per week.

Tracking

Here is where it begins to resemble work. The most efficient way to lose the weight you desire is to track your calorie intake. This has gotten much simpler over the years and today it can be done right from your smartphone or computer. r/loseit recommends an app like MyFitnessPal, Loseit! (unaffiliated), or Cronometer. Create an account and be honest with it about your current stats, activities, and goals. This is your tracker and no one else needs to see it so don’t cheat the numbers. You’ll find large user created databases that make logging and tracking your food and drinks easy with just the tap of the screen or the push of a button. We also highly recommend the use of a digital kitchen scale for accuracy. Knowing how much of what you're eating is more important than what you're eating. Why? This may explain it.

Creating Your Deficit

How do you create a deficit? This is up to you. r/loseit has a few recommendations but ultimately that decision is yours. There is no perfect diet for everyone. There is a perfect diet for you and you can create it. You can eat less of exactly what you eat now. If you like pizza you can have pizza. Have 2 slices instead of 4. You can try lower calorie replacements for calorie dense foods. Some of the communities favorites are cauliflower rice, zucchini noodles, spaghetti squash in place of their more calorie rich cousins. If it appeals to you an entire dietary change like Keto, Paleo, Vegetarian.

The most important thing to remember is that this selection of foods works for you. Sustainability is the key to long term weight management success. If you hate what you’re eating you won’t stick to it.

Exercise

Is NOT mandatory. You can lose fat and create a deficit through diet alone. There is no requirement of exercise to lose weight.

It has it’s own benefits though. You will burn extra calories. Exercise is shown to be beneficial to mental health and creates an endorphin rush as well. It makes people feel awesome and has been linked to higher rates of long term success when physical activity is included in lifestyle changes.

Crawl, Walk, Run

It can seem like one needs to make a 180 degree course correction to find success. That isn’t necessarily true. Many of our users find that creating small initial changes that build a foundation allows them to progress forward in even, sustained, increments.

Acceptance

You will struggle. We have all struggled. This is natural. There is no tip or trick to get through this though. We encourage you to recognize why you are struggling and forgive yourself for whatever reason that may be. If you overindulged at your last meal that is ok. You can resolve to make the next meal better.

Do not let the pursuit of perfect get in the way of progress. We don’t need perfect. We just want better.

Additional resources

Now you’re ready to do this. Here are more details, that may help you refine your plan.

No matter what kind of day you’re having, stick to you tracking habits.

I’ve noticed an uptick of posts from people wondering why they’re plateauing. The best way to know what’s up with your body is by knowing what’s going into it, even when you’re not panning to stick to your defict

Unless you’re confident in your estimates, just track the cals so when the scale is doing funky things you have an idea what’s up.

I say this as a person who is horrible at guessing my calories when I’m eating out. I keep track of my cals for weight maintenance and to monitor how it impacts my running.

One or two day’s here or there being a bit over or under doesn’t really matter in terms of weight loss so please don’t feel guilt for occasionally eating something not in line with your deficit, moderation and a overall deficit is what’s required to lose weight.

It’s been very exciting to see the progress that everyone is making. I’m so proud of how everyone is doing!!! But please please please try not to beat yourselves up if things don’t go according to plan.

TL;DR If you overeat get back on track the following day. If you have a planned day where your not going to stick to your deficit I encourage you to keep tracking so you have the data to know what’s up with your body.

I’m losing weight for no reason and it’s starting to concern me

18 yo, M, 5’ 10 and currently at 140lbs even. Over the last 3-4 months my weight has dropped from 155lbs to what it’s is now. Last month I was around the high 140s, and now since I’ve started this new job I’ve dropped to low 140s (sometimes weighing in even lower than that in the mornings). I can even notice the weight loss in the mirror with my ribs being more pronounced. I don’t typically eat breakfast, but my lunch and dinner are always massive which should make me hit my necessary caloric intake for a given day. I have hyperthyroidism, but my numbers have been stable for a while now so I don’t know if it’s related to that. With the kind of food I eat, I really should weigh a lot more. But for some reason I’m continuing to lose weight and it’s concerning me. What is going on here? What can I do to start gaining weight back?

Finally lost 10lbs today and had to tell someone

Just wanted to tell someone I finally hit 140lbs (technically 140.8/9 ish), but still!

Sorry for the long post it's all over the place.

My weight started at 150lbs and I've been so ashamed of myself for letting my weight gain 30lbs over the span of 4 years ish. I don't tell people because I am so ashamed of myself, clothes didn't fit good and people kept thinking I was pregnant sure didn't help.

I've been at it since October and the first 5 lbs were easy since I just became more aware of my eating habits but I was stuck at 145 for a long time then I finally hit 143, after numerous ups and downs on the scale. That got me really happy, until I got stuck there for weeks. My eating would be really good when I go to work, but on the weekends, it's bad because I might have carbs 2x a day.

Each time I could tell it was trending downwards eg. 143.8, 143.4, 142, 141, weekend comes, and it trends back up to 143 right when I was so close to hitting 140. Then the cycle repeats until today!

That's my beef with weight loss! 1 day of enjoying food (not excessively) and the weight jumps up by maybe 2 lbs, eating good only drops 0.5-1lbs a day for me.

I haven't given up foods. I still eat whatever I want during dinners but for my lunches at work, I grind it out. I have to have some normalcy.

Just this week, I increased my weights for my leg exercises and I wonder if that helped since I'm so sore and I haven't been for a while.

How to Stop Drinking All Soda?

This is my second time on the weight loss roller coaster. I started in 2018 and lost 35lbs before gaining it slowly back plus 20 extra lbs since. I’m officially down 5lb already and super proud of myself. Finding LoseIt and becoming more aware of calorie counting makes life so much easier.

So I’ve never been a fan of full fat sodas but my habit of sugar free sodas has become an issue that I don’t know how to face.

Overcoming sugar addiction has been hard on me but I’m getting more consistent. I’m regularly stopping myself from eating crap and rewarding myself with tasty, protein rich foods. That being said I’ve stopped using food as a “reward” for things. Food is essential to life, not a reward. In the other hand trying to give up soda is so much worse for me.

I love the carbonation, which is the problem. The acidity is affecting my teeth and I’m sick of it. However, my impulse control is so weak to buying or consuming soda. Anyone got advice on how to kick it? The best method to do so? I’ve tried doing it having smaller portions but I simply consume more once I start.

Honestly at the beginning of my weight loss journey I would have never of thoughts of the negatives of sugar free soda cos it’s sugar free!! It’s “””health””” haha s/

A reminder to celebrate small victories!

Like everyone, I get so inspired and am in love with people's huge weight loss transformations. But at the same time, it can be discouraging when you seem to be doing everything correctly, but the scale isn't moving.

Of course, not all progress reflects on what you see the scale, but nothing beats seeing the number smaller than previously. For myself, I've been teetering between 199-200 pounds for about 2 months and it was really frustrating to not see the scale move.

Today, I finally weighed myself and am at 195 lb. Not much, I know, but for the first time in 20 years, I am finally going back on the scale instead of forward and damn, it feels good.

My point is, as long as you're moving in the right direction, you're still moving, no matter how long it takes. Don't rely on the scale too much as weight loss can reflect in how your clothes fit, how you feel, energy levels, etc.

Although I still have a long way to go and it's important to focus on your goal, it's important to congratulate yourselves on what you have achieved, not chastising yourself for what you haven't. You and your mental health will appreciate it.

Keep going, we got this!

Little update just wanted to say it since seeing other people’s on here motivates myself to keep going.

Im finally seeing results. After working out for the last few months, to be honest I didn’t see a lot in the beginning got disappointed but it’s coming in now . I’ve been watching what I eat not really counting my calories exactly which probably would help a lot more but I don’t eat junk food don’t drink pop don’t eat late at night(my hardest issue to overcome). 5/6 days a week I go to the gym and train even when I have to work on that day whatever I go. I think that’s the biggest thing is the consistency if you don’t for a few days you are going to be screwed my opinion. Anyways I don’t care about all those fancy diets in my own personal opinion I care about one thing that’s going to get my weight loss journey done and it’s hard work (I’m sorry if I sound like an idiot it’s just true). Not bashing any diets cause they obviously work from reading tons of stories and watching tons of videos that we all have done I’m just doing it different. Old school European immigrant way hard work that’s it.

Anyways here my results I’ve seen nothing to crazy but great for me. Sweaters/shirts/pants that didn’t fit me months ago are starting to become a lot more loose and have a much better fit. I went to school today wearing some roots pants I got them tied up and they were still falling down a little felt like a gangster cause my pants were low. Also other cloths that fit me nice are starting to become loose. Especially around my waist, I need new belts cause the belts I got don’t go tight enough to keep my pants up (I did make some of my own in holes in some). Also I always keep a cleaned shaved face and my face 100% I’m seeing it less full and even a little jawline popping out. Again I’m still overweight still big still need to put a lot more work in but today I realized this shit is motha fucking working. Thx for listening and let’s all get to work!

Just a little edit to this I’ve been trying on all my clothes see how they fit 😂😂😂😂, just so in a few more months when I knock more lbs off I can remember how they fit when heavier.

I also have a small feeling I’m about to see a lot of results the next few months but I’m not getting my hopes to much I’m just thinking it’s coming soon.
