weight loss apps?

hey! i (18f, 5'6, 144lbs) am looking to lose some weight and burn the body fat i gained during quarantine. i need to fix my poor eating habits in order to do this. i had a rigorous workout + eating routine for about a month, lost 5 lbs, and then quit. i need something to hold me accountable. what apps do you guys recommend that dont cost an arm and a leg? i wanted to try noom, but i simply dont have the $150 to do it. has anyone on here had any success with something like weight watchers? im not looking to spend more than $10-$15 a month.

Should I see a dietitian?

For context, I'm 5'9", 24F, started at 310lb, lost about 35lb in 9 months, and then in the last 5 months have gained about 10lb back. I think a big part of why I'm not losing weight anymore is that I'm drinking and eating out more (my exercise has remained about the same). When I started trying to lose weight, I was living in an area where I was very socially isolated, and that was back when everyone was more locked down due to covid, so it was very easy for me to not drink (I drink alcohol socially, but not much if I'm just by myself) or eat out. Since then, I've moved to an area where there are more things to do and I have more friends, hence the worse dietary habits. For more context- when I eat in, I regularly use a food scale and plan the meals I cook based on calories/macros.

Anyway, I recently saw my primary care physician (first time seeing him, as I moved recently). Based on bloodwork and such, I am healthy (I've always been concerned about diabetes as it runs in the family- my glucose is on the higher end of the range, but still considered normal), but I'm obviously obese. The doctor said he was impressed at the weight loss I was able to do on my own, and then mentioned if I wanted to, I could go see a dietitian as well. He kind of framed it as, if I want to, I could, but also wasn't pushing it hard. I said I'd be interested to see one so he gave me a referral. Unfortunately, however, my insurance only pays for dietitians if I have a medical diagnosis- diabetes being the main thing (just for weight loss was explicitly said not to be a reason for insurance to cover).

Because insurance won't cover it, I'm not sure if it'll be worth it for me. It would be $450 for an initial visit and $150 for followup visits. I could afford it (depending on how many followup visits are necessary), but it would put a squeeze on my budget. Because I don't have any outstanding metabolic problems (that my doctor or I know of) besides my obesity, part of me is wondering if a dietitian will just say that I need to eat out and drink less. Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

Currently I'm thinking I'll put in the effort to eat out and drink less for a few months and see if that helps- and if not, then go see a dietitian. I'm going to ask my primary care doctor about this and see what he thinks, but also was curious if anyone here had some insight as well.

How can I get back on track into losing more weight??

17M - 373lbs - 6’2”

Hi! I started my fat loss journey in April and have lost about 45lbs. I started going to the gym every other day and it then a little later I started going daily. I made sure to split the week for different muscle groups so I can make sure I hit all of them. I did that because I wanted to minimize loose skin. I also did about 50 minutes of cardio daily. The cardio I do was on the treadmill 3mph for ~50 minutes, %5 incline.

2 week ago I started using a supplement called creatine. I did a loading phase by taking 5 grams 4 time a day for a week. Then I started taking 5 grams once daily as recommended and per usual I started gaining water weight. A few days and later for some odd reason my weight loss just halted. I only eat about 1800-2200 calories a day. I really need some suggestions on what I should do. Should I stop taking creatine? Or should I lower my calories even more.

lost 115kg and feeling great for it

So I have always been over weight from as long as I can remember. I have lived a very unhealthy lifestyle for the last 10 years which got me up to 225kg. I was ok with that untill I went to see my doctor and they told me I was pre diabetic, that scared me alot as I have seen a close family member also go into a diabetic coma and that's not something I wanted for myself. So I started my weight loss journey, I started by cutting my carbs back and not drinking anything but water, then I got the cheapest exercise bike I could find and tried to cycle for 10 minutes it took me about 20 minutes to cycle the 10, but the feeling of accomplishment that I got for not leaving the room untill the 10 minutes of exercise was done was so rewarding. I now use exercise as stress relief and look forward to my daily bike ride or walk. I'm at my lightest now in years 110kg and it really dose feel like I have my life back.

Multiple things can be true at once!

Just wanted to share some thoughts on my fitness journey over the last decade. Maybe some of you can relate.

Long rambles ahead…

For the longest time, I thought I was predisposed to a certain body type. At 5’7” and 185ish lbs I never felt obese, but I certainly wasn’t fit or happy either. It wasn’t until I moved from Phoenix to San Diego that I became inspired to lose weight. I got breast implants to address a long held insecurity and to finally be proportionate. I lost 35 lbs the hard way—counting calories and working out consistently. I ran my first half marathon. And a few more after that. I felt great! Sex was better, mood was better, everything was better. I felt like a woman instead of chubby, flat chested girl. But guess what? I found new things to dislike. I kinda missed my bigger booty (hadn’t found strength training yet) and thick thighs. I even felt self conscious about my chest!

That was nearly 10 years ago. I’ve never lost my love for fitness. I always picked it back up. But I wasn’t consistent. And I wanted to learn how to love myself at any size. I slowly stopped following fitness accounts on IG and started following people who preached self love/body positivity. I went to therapy. Last year I removed my toxic breast implants. It’s been a long road. I slowly gained all the weight back, horrified by each new milestone. I recently hit 193 on the scale. Enough.

So I’m back to basics. It’s really hard having been on both sides of the spectrum. But I finally realized that multiple things can be true.

You can love yourself while trying to change your body.

Intentional weight loss is not inherently fatphobic.

Health is everything. It’s also relative.

For the longest time I felt that intentional weight loss was a betrayal of my values. If we should love ourselves at any size, why did I care so much about 10 extra lbs? Or 20? Where was the line? Should there be a line?

It’s complicated y’all. Ultimately I realized I am not ok approaching 200 lbs. Is some of that internalized fatphobia? Sure. But I miss the confidence. I miss 10 mile runs. I miss showing up for myself in the gym after a hard day. I miss simple things I took for granted—more flexibility, easier breathing, better sleep.

I fucking hate counting calories but you know what? It works for me. It might not be sustainable. But neither is this lifestyle.

Multiple things can be true at once.

Edit: deleted my comment about fat folks being physically unwell and thin folks being mentally unwell. Words are hard. I’m just trying to say that body size alone is not the best indicator of health!

Is does exercise helps expedite weight loss or only necessary for health?

Hi! So I've been losing weight for over a month now just with a calorie deficit, some days I will do some cardio if I feel like, otherwise not much. I started doing some research about incorporating exercise and I've seen SO much conflicting info. You have one half saying exercise isn't necessary to lose weight but is good for your health like heart etc. Then you have the other half that says it expedites weight loss. Where do you stand? What benefits or cons you've found with working out and losing weight.

Thank you!

Maintenance Calories For One Day Is Okay, Right?

Look away if you can’t read about women’s troubles.

I’m PMSing hardcore. I just want snacks. I feel like I’m doing good things for myself. I wanted a day of going overboard where I could just eat what I want or have a meal I want. I originally wanted to eat an entire box of Cheez It’s and just move forward. Instead, I went and got some snack portioned bags so I can have them and not feel deprived but also control myself. Or I wanted to have Chinese takeout.

I’m very snacky today and decided to find a compromise where I just eat at maintenance calories today. I will go back to my 2lb/weight loss calories tomorrow, but today, it’s totally okay to do maintenance cals, right? One day isn’t going to make a huge difference.

  1. I think it’ll be healthy for me to do this and witness myself going back to my original boundaries to reach my goals. I have 150+ lbs to lose.

  2. It’s just one day.

I’m just scared of myself, but maybe I need to stop and trust myself. I’ve been doing great for over a month. Even if I do maintenance cals for one day and go back that will still be me doing great, right? I wish I didn’t need reassurance, but I’m insecure and working on it. Maybe this will help me to stop being so insecure.

I’m planning on either making a homemade Big Mac or just indulging in a bowl of 3 cups of spaghetti with Rao’s sauce and lots of grated Parm cheese.

So far today I have eaten: morning iced coffee and scone. Cheez it’s. Lentil and rice sour cream and onion rings from Trader Joe’s. Watermelon. And I have about 1,300 cals left to have the burger or spaghetti.

This isn’t the worst thing, right?
