So you aren’t sure of how to start? Don’t worry! “How do I get started?” is our most asked question. r/Loseit has helped our users lose over 1,000,000 recorded pounds and these are the steps that we’ve found most useful for getting started.

Why you’re overweight

Our bodies are amazing (yes, yours too!). In order to survive before supermarkets, we had to be able to store energy to get us through lean times, we store this energy as adipose fat tissue. If you put more energy into your body than it needs, it stores it, for (potential) later use. When you put in less than it needs, it uses the stored energy. The more energy you have stored, the more overweight you are. The trick is to get your body to use the stored energy, which can only be done if you give it less energy than it needs, consistently.

Before You Start

The very first step is calculating your calorie needs. You can do that HERE. This will give you an approximation of your calorie needs for the day. The next step is to figure how quickly you want to lose the fat. One pound of fat is equal to 3500 calories. So to lose 1 pound of fat per week you will need to consume 500 calories less than your TDEE (daily calorie needs from the link above). 750 calories less will result in 1.5 pounds and 1000 calories is an aggressive 2 pounds per week.

Tracking

Here is where it begins to resemble work. The most efficient way to lose the weight you desire is to track your calorie intake. This has gotten much simpler over the years and today it can be done right from your smartphone or computer. r/loseit recommends an app like MyFitnessPal, Loseit! (unaffiliated), or Cronometer. Create an account and be honest with it about your current stats, activities, and goals. This is your tracker and no one else needs to see it so don’t cheat the numbers. You’ll find large user created databases that make logging and tracking your food and drinks easy with just the tap of the screen or the push of a button. We also highly recommend the use of a digital kitchen scale for accuracy. Knowing how much of what you're eating is more important than what you're eating. Why? This may explain it.

Creating Your Deficit

How do you create a deficit? This is up to you. r/loseit has a few recommendations but ultimately that decision is yours. There is no perfect diet for everyone. There is a perfect diet for you and you can create it. You can eat less of exactly what you eat now. If you like pizza you can have pizza. Have 2 slices instead of 4. You can try lower calorie replacements for calorie dense foods. Some of the communities favorites are cauliflower rice, zucchini noodles, spaghetti squash in place of their more calorie rich cousins. If it appeals to you an entire dietary change like Keto, Paleo, Vegetarian.

The most important thing to remember is that this selection of foods works for you. Sustainability is the key to long term weight management success. If you hate what you’re eating you won’t stick to it.

Exercise

Is NOT mandatory. You can lose fat and create a deficit through diet alone. There is no requirement of exercise to lose weight.

It has it’s own benefits though. You will burn extra calories. Exercise is shown to be beneficial to mental health and creates an endorphin rush as well. It makes people feel awesome and has been linked to higher rates of long term success when physical activity is included in lifestyle changes.

Crawl, Walk, Run

It can seem like one needs to make a 180 degree course correction to find success. That isn’t necessarily true. Many of our users find that creating small initial changes that build a foundation allows them to progress forward in even, sustained, increments.

Acceptance

You will struggle. We have all struggled. This is natural. There is no tip or trick to get through this though. We encourage you to recognize why you are struggling and forgive yourself for whatever reason that may be. If you overindulged at your last meal that is ok. You can resolve to make the next meal better.

Do not let the pursuit of perfect get in the way of progress. We don’t need perfect. We just want better.

Overcoming jealousy towards friends weight loss

We're on a weight loss/get fit/get healthier journey with my friend. She is the kindest, sweetest, strongest and one of the most inspirational people I have ever met in my life.

We started this journey of ours around the same time. In the last six months she's had unbelievable success and has nearly gotten to her goal, while I'm struggling really hard. I've been getting to it, but she's losing weight around 3x faster than I am. We have a similar gym routine, eat clean and healthy, etc.

My problem lies in my feelings. I've noticed I've started to feel jealous of her weight loss. Everything just seems so easy for her, while I'm really struggling with the process even though I'm getting consistent results. Every time we're in any group function the topic is always her weight loss, how great she looks or how far she's come and she rarely mentions any struggles. It's gotten really frustrating for me, so much that I'm starting to resent her in some ways, secretly hoping that she gains weight back or binges on chocolate.

These thoughts are absolutely destroying me. I love her to death and am so proud of her, I wish I could just stop and focus on myself and all the good stuff. I've never ever compared myself to anyone or have gotten jealous of anyone's weight loss, I don't understand how she can get under my skin like that.

I also understand the facts. I have a different body type, height, genetics, past trauma, which all affects my progress, but my feelings aren't listening to logic. I'm afraid I'll end up resenting her completely and ruining our friendship because of my stupidity.

Has anyone been in a similar position and gotten over it somehow? I'd seek out help from therapy, but it's very expensive here, so a luxury I cannot afford right now. Thank you in advance to all the replies!

How long would I have to use a stationary bike to lose weight? Recommendations on disabled exercise?

for reference, i’ve already lost 32lbs from a calorie deficit (i’m 5”7, CW:158 GW:135). i’ve completely plateaued, and haven’t lost a pound in almost two months despite my horribly restrictive 1200 cal diet (and i haven’t been cheating or anything, i am true to weighing out foods and recording everything). i know to expect weight loss to be slower the closer you get to your goal, so i’m looking to add in some exercise to speed along the process. i’m super frustrated with not seeing any changes.

my only issue is that i have a heart condition and cannot run, walk more than like a block, or use a real bike. i have a small at home cycler, and until my health improves i can’t do much else. i know using the cycler regularly would probably make my legs stronger, but would anyone know how much i’d have to do every day or to what extent it could potentially affect weight loss? i feel like i’m out of options. i considered intermittent fasting, but with my health condition my doctors have told me not to.

I lost 20 pounds last year and then fell off the wagon. I'm jumping back on in hopes of losing 15-20 more by my wedding in October.

Like the title said, I lost 20 pounds of my 35-40 pound weight loss goal last Summer and then just....stopped. I'm not even really sure why. Thankfully, I've maintained over the last year, but now my wedding is 5 months away and I've realized it's now or never.

My biggest difficulty is excercising regularly, so even with my relatively small weight loss, I've got some loose skin on my arms that I'm going to try hard to tone up.

So tell me, what are your tips/tricks to kickstarting a weightloss and excercise routine to help keep me motivated over the next few weeks as I get back into it?

First time in my life I am proud of myself. I lost 21 pounds...the right way.

January 1st of this year I decided to take my life back. I was the heaviest I have ever been: 228 pounds. I’m a 31 year old five foot six female. I WAS SICK AND TIRED OF BEING SICK AND TIRED. I took control of my mental health with the correct meds. I cut Xanax out of my life. I have been attending therapy once a week. And I ended my vicious cycle of binge eating and then starving myself. I lost 21 pounds so far and am the happiest I have ever been in my life. No fad diet or crazy new weight loss pill. This is all me working my ass off on my mind, body, and soul. I have been eating clean and I stop when I’m full. Even joined class pass and I do whatever class sparks my fancy that day! I just wanted to share. Thank you all so much for this community!

Untagged Facebook Photos

Just spent a little time scrolling through the "Timeline Review" section of Facebook. There are so, so many photos of myself that I was too ashamed to be tagged in over the last 2 years. It makes me really sad. Lots of big life events like weddings, holidays and vacations that I would have loved to share publicly if it weren't for my weight. Not to mention the countless undocumented photo ops that I sneakily avoided altogether.

Though scrolling through those "hidden" photos makes me sad, it truly reaffirms the fact that this weight loss journey is worth my time and effort. I want to take photos with my friends and family. I want to be able to share them. I want to look at them years down the road and feel happiness instead of sadness over the hard truth of how big I've gotten.

I saved all the photos to my phone in a folder called "untaggables." I'm keeping them. And in time, I'll post them... as my "before" photos!
