1 year 84lbs (6stone) down.

https://imgur.com/a/yPL4JQh - progress pic.

I still can’t believe how far I have came, I have tried this so many times and failed each time.

I feel so much better in myself, I actually have some confidence, my friends have commented about how I used to be so quiet and would sit in the background but now you can tell I have confidence and I talk way more now than I ever did.

It’s the small things like having the confidence to go get my nails done by myself, I would always take someone with me before.

I feel healthier, I spend more time on self care than I ever did before.

But my favourite part of all is no longer having to sit sweating in the summer wearing black leggings and long tops fully covered up.

Admittedly I haven’t done a lot of exercise the majority of my weight loss was down to food, I do try to make sure I get 10k steps in a day and plan to start working out and hopefully join the gym, which is also something I feel like I could do by myself now.

I only have 11lbs to go until I reach my target weight, it feels crazy to me that I’m so close to the end, it makes me emotional.

Day 1? Starting your weight loss journey on Wednesday, 28 July 2021? Start here!

Today is your Day 1?

Welcome to r/Loseit!

So you aren’t sure of how to start? Don’t worry! “How do I get started?” is our most asked question. r/Loseit has helped our users lose over 1,000,000 recorded pounds and these are the steps that we’ve found most useful for getting started.

Why you’re overweight

Our bodies are amazing (yes, yours too!). In order to survive before supermarkets, we had to be able to store energy to get us through lean times, we store this energy as adipose fat tissue. If you put more energy into your body than it needs, it stores it, for (potential) later use. When you put in less than it needs, it uses the stored energy. The more energy you have stored, the more overweight you are. The trick is to get your body to use the stored energy, which can only be done if you give it less energy than it needs, consistently.

Before You Start

The very first step is calculating your calorie needs. You can do that HERE. This will give you an approximation of your calorie needs for the day. The next step is to figure how quickly you want to lose the fat. One pound of fat is equal to 3500 calories. So to lose 1 pound of fat per week you will need to consume 500 calories less than your TDEE (daily calorie needs from the link above). 750 calories less will result in 1.5 pounds and 1000 calories is an aggressive 2 pounds per week.

Tracking

Here is where it begins to resemble work. The most efficient way to lose the weight you desire is to track your calorie intake. This has gotten much simpler over the years and today it can be done right from your smartphone or computer. r/loseit recommends an app like MyFitnessPal, Loseit! (unaffiliated), or Cronometer. Create an account and be honest with it about your current stats, activities, and goals. This is your tracker and no one else needs to see it so don’t cheat the numbers. You’ll find large user created databases that make logging and tracking your food and drinks easy with just the tap of the screen or the push of a button. We also highly recommend the use of a digital kitchen scale for accuracy. Knowing how much of what you're eating is more important than what you're eating. Why? This may explain it.

Creating Your Deficit

How do you create a deficit? This is up to you. r/loseit has a few recommendations but ultimately that decision is yours. There is no perfect diet for everyone. There is a perfect diet for you and you can create it. You can eat less of exactly what you eat now. If you like pizza you can have pizza. Have 2 slices instead of 4. You can try lower calorie replacements for calorie dense foods. Some of the communities favorites are cauliflower rice, zucchini noodles, spaghetti squash in place of their more calorie rich cousins. If it appeals to you an entire dietary change like Keto, Paleo, Vegetarian.

The most important thing to remember is that this selection of foods works for you. Sustainability is the key to long term weight management success. If you hate what you’re eating you won’t stick to it.

Exercise

Is NOT mandatory. You can lose fat and create a deficit through diet alone. There is no requirement of exercise to lose weight.

It has it’s own benefits though. You will burn extra calories. Exercise is shown to be beneficial to mental health and creates an endorphin rush as well. It makes people feel *awesome* and has been linked to higher rates of long term success when physical activity is included in lifestyle changes.

Crawl, Walk, Run

It can seem like one needs to make a 180 degree course correction to find success. That isn’t necessarily true. Many of our users find that creating small initial changes that build a foundation allows them to progress forward in even, sustained, increments.

Acceptance

You will struggle. We have all struggled. This is natural. There is no tip or trick to get through this though. We encourage you to recognize why you are struggling and forgive yourself for whatever reason that may be. If you overindulged at your last meal that is ok. You can resolve to make the next meal better.

Do not let the pursuit of perfect get in the way of progress. We don’t need perfect. We just want better.

I start the day off great but then end up failing….

man i hate that i have to write this because it makes me feel like i’ve failed. A little backstory : last year around this same time i was pushing 310lbs and got to a point where i looked in the was disgusted with myself, that pushed me to kickoff my first “successful“ weight loss journey , in about 4-5 months i had got down to the 260lb range , i felt way better but around the new years i stopped , it’s hard to stick to a calorie limit when you’re around family and all having a good time , eating , etc. I haven’t gained much weight since i stopped doing cico ( around january ) so i am proud of that but i’ve noticed i’m starting to backtrack a bit, i’ll find myself binge eating and i’ve been trying to get back in track and i’ll start off the morning doing amazing, i’ll eat breakfast around noon and a bit later have lunch or a little snack and it’ll all be good until dinner , when i first was losing weight i didn’t have a job so i could pretty much just meal prep whenever i wanted but now it’s hard to make a healthy dinner without just binging on something else , or if i do make a healthy dinner, i’ll come home from work, eat it and then binge in something else, if i can just stop the binging when u get home from work i’ll be able to get back in track, i tell myself i won’t do it everyday but then i end up doing it , it’s been a cycle for weeks now and i really don’t know how to go about stopping this after work binging , any advice would be greatly appreciated . ( my weekday work shifts are relatively short at about 4 hours sometimes 6 hours if i go in early )

the uneven body of weight loss

so i’m not sure if this is just a me problem, but i wanted to share it anyway! every time i lose about 5 lbs my body loses the weight in different areas, making other areas of my body look bigger than when i started! let me explain: so i just lost another 5 pounds or so over the course of two months-ish, and i’m definitely at my lowest weight this year. my body’s a little slow catching up, so my legs and arms will be the first to shrink, making my stomach and face look much chubbier than usual! then in another 5 lbs, my stomach and face will shrink but then my legs and arms look so big! unless i maintenance for a while, it’s a vicious cycle of uneven body fat distribution. i know it’s only temporary, so i try not to freak out so much about it, but it’s so freaking bothersome sometimes!

the only other time i’ve noticed weird changes like this is with my cat when he was kitten, his face would grow long, even out, then it’d be extra chubby and wide, then even out until he reached adult size

anyway i’m reaching out because i feel like i’m so alone with this topic! i see others lose weight, and lose is all over very evenly. like i said, i know it’s only temporary so i try not to let it bother me, but that self conscious mind set always kicks in when i see it.

i hope my post reaches others like me, i’d like to let you know you’re not alone! we’re in this together, and you’re doing fantastic!

ps: here’s my stats in case you’re interested. F, 5’4 SW- 165 CW- 146 GW- 130

Seeking advice: I'm at a loss with weight loss

Hi friends. I'm struggling today and hoping I can crowdsource inspiration/input. I (F28) currently weigh 173 (5ft. 6", 32% body fat) and have been trying to lose weight for a few months now to no avail and I don't understand why.

I started Noom in May at 174.8...and weighed in this morning at 173.2. I dropped Noom because I wanted to be more mindful of protein intake and macros, so I've switched to MFP and am trying to eat a more macro-focused, high-protein diet. I'm lifting 4-5 days a week and try to do some walks, runs, rowing, on the off days. I don't eat desserts, I don't drink alcohol or soda and yet the scale does not move. I'm looking at my weight graph that's basically just a straight line and it makes me want to cry. I've lost weight before with WW and running and lifting and got down to 140 - why isn't anything happening now?

Calculating TDEE put me around 2300-2600, so it recommended 1800-1900 calories a day. I've been really trying to eat that much although I was used to under-eating beforehand so it's a tough adjustment to be constantly making meals and getting ~160g of protein in. (Noom had me at like 1300 calories which in retrospect seems too low?)

Should I be eating more (is my calorie deficit too high?) The opposite - cut back to 1500 or 1600? Should I ditch lifting and just go back to running and cardio? I can understand the lifting may be building muscle that weighs more than fat, but it's hard when I see no physical difference and the smart scale gives me no data to corroborate that hypothesis.

It makes me worry something is wrong with me. It's like my metabolism is a runaway experiment. I'm at a loss and grateful for anyone's input.
