[UPDATE] Progress on kidney donation weight loss (Part 2)

Original: https://www.reddit.com/r/loseit/comments/ahl98a/need_help_im_m35_donating_kidney_and_i_want_to/

First Update: https://www.reddit.com/r/loseit/comments/akn2hs/update_progress_on_kidney_donation_weight_loss/

Just another update on things as the testing date gets closer! Down to 232 lbs. from 252lbs. ! Got my eating habits on lock down (Eggs, cauliflower, chicken, and nonfat greek yogurt) and easily staying within 1200 calories. One cheat day a week where I visit my parents and my mother tries to kill me with food. I had to turn down taking home literally 8 cinnamon muffins she made.

My pants are feeling pretty loose these days. My regular belt notch is no longer being used and keeps throwing me off when I get dressed. Nice problem to have!

My only health sin right now, honestly, is salt. I CANNOT give that up. Probably my biggest weakness, but I always put salt on EVERYTHING. I know everything bad about it, but my sense of taste in general is kinda dull and I just cannot see myself ever honestly changing on this one thing. I do wish there was some sort of alternative like Splenda is to sugar.

Aside from that, taking daily one-a-day vitamins regularly and feeling pretty great. So far so good. I've got about a month left before I head to the Mayo Clinic!

Day 1? Starting your weight loss journey on Thursday, 14 February 2019? Start here!

Today is your Day 1?

Welcome to r/Loseit!

So you aren’t sure of how to start? Don’t worry! “How do I get started?” is our most asked question. r/Loseit has helped our users lose over 1,000,000 recorded pounds and these are the steps that we’ve found most useful for getting started.

Why you’re overweight

Our bodies are amazing (yes, yours too!). In order to survive before supermarkets, we had to be able to store energy to get us through lean times, we store this energy as adipose fat tissue. If you put more energy into your body than it needs, it stores it, for (potential) later use. When you put in less than it needs, it uses the stored energy. The more energy you have stored, the more overweight you are. The trick is to get your body to use the stored energy, which can only be done if you give it less energy than it needs, consistently.

Before You Start

The very first step is calculating your calorie needs. You can do that HERE. This will give you an approximation of your calorie needs for the day. The next step is to figure how quickly you want to lose the fat. One pound of fat is equal to 3500 calories. So to lose 1 pound of fat per week you will need to consume 500 calories less than your TDEE (daily calorie needs from the link above). 750 calories less will result in 1.5 pounds and 1000 calories is an aggressive 2 pounds per week.

Tracking

Here is where it begins to resemble work. The most efficient way to lose the weight you desire is to track your calorie intake. This has gotten much simpler over the years and today it can be done right from your smartphone or computer. r/loseit recommends an app like MyFitnessPal, Loseit! (unaffiliated), or Cronometer. Create an account and be honest with it about your current stats, activities, and goals. This is your tracker and no one else needs to see it so don’t cheat the numbers. You’ll find large user created databases that make logging and tracking your food and drinks easy with just the tap of the screen or the push of a button. We also highly recommend the use of a digital kitchen scale for accuracy. Knowing how much of what you're eating is more important than what you're eating. Why? This may explain it.

Creating Your Deficit

How do you create a deficit? This is up to you. r/loseit has a few recommendations but ultimately that decision is yours. There is no perfect diet for everyone. There is a perfect diet for you and you can create it. You can eat less of exactly what you eat now. If you like pizza you can have pizza. Have 2 slices instead of 4. You can try lower calorie replacements for calorie dense foods. Some of the communities favorites are cauliflower rice, zucchini noodles, spaghetti squash in place of their more calorie rich cousins. If it appeals to you an entire dietary change like Keto, Paleo, Vegetarian.

The most important thing to remember is that this selection of foods works for you. Sustainability is the key to long term weight management success. If you hate what you’re eating you won’t stick to it.

Exercise

Is NOT mandatory. You can lose fat and create a deficit through diet alone. There is no requirement of exercise to lose weight.

It has it’s own benefits though. You will burn extra calories. Exercise is shown to be beneficial to mental health and creates an endorphin rush as well. It makes people feel awesome and has been linked to higher rates of long term success when physical activity is included in lifestyle changes.

Crawl, Walk, Run

It can seem like one needs to make a 180 degree course correction to find success. That isn’t necessarily true. Many of our users find that creating small initial changes that build a foundation allows them to progress forward in even, sustained, increments.

Acceptance

You will struggle. We have all struggled. This is natural. There is no tip or trick to get through this though. We encourage you to recognize why you are struggling and forgive yourself for whatever reason that may be. If you overindulged at your last meal that is ok. You can resolve to make the next meal better.

Do not let the pursuit of perfect get in the way of progress. We don’t need perfect. We just want better.

Additional resources

Now you’re ready to do this. Here are more details, that may help you refine your plan.

Bad time on tinder revitalized my willpower to lose it - any similar experiences here?

Hello, long time lurker here!

A bit of backstory: A somewhat of a catalyst for my weight loss journey was when my then girlfriend's started commenting on my weight gain so I decided to do something about it. I was feeling good after losing over 10 kg/22 lbs (from +97 kg to ~86 kg) but the relationship had some fundamental issues so we decided to break it off in the early 2018. Since then I've been improving myself in other areas of my life (hobbies, finishing my master's, making new friends) and giving time to myself (didn't want to jump to a bandage relationship). Unfortunately (in hindsight) losing weight had been not one of the improvement areas so I basically plateaued at 86 kg for over 9 months or so.

Current situation: In early 2019 I felt ready for a new relationship and turned to tinder even though I knew in advance that it's rough for an average looking guy like myself. Like the typical average Joe I did some research on making a proper bio and which pictures to choose. After a while I was pretty disheartened with the 'results' as I still had 0 matches even though I didn't feel like I was being particularly 'picky' or trying to match out of my league (cons of living in a smaller town I guess?).

This experience kind of gave me an extra boost to be the best me I can be - cliché I know. After all, people get attracted to looks (especially via dating apps) and fall in love with the person. I guess it's shallow but it made me want to lose those last 14 kg/30 lb because I feel I'm missing a chance to romance someone just because of my appearance. Started counting calories and hitting the gym again!

Anyone have similar experience with dating apps as I had?

And has someone reached their goal weight with a similar motivation? How do you feel now?

Seems like my boyfriend is no longer taking our weight loss seriously...

My boyfriend and I have been struggling with our weight for the past two years. We decided that come February 1st we would change our eating habits and restrict our calorie intake. The first week went really well and we both lost weight, but this second week has not been the same. I realized that he does not have self control. I noticed earlier in the week that he does not know how to stick to correct portion sizes despite me telling him he needs to pay attention to this. He had an entire medium pizza, and an entire large pizza, to himself on two of the days this week. I came home yesterday and saw he ate multiple things of mine that definitely exceeded his calorie intake for the day. Now he is getting upset because I won't buy him a variety of different candy/treats for Valentine's Day even though we already agreed that we weren't celebrating.

I am getting fed up because I have been serious about this, while it seems that he is just being lazy and falling back into his old ways. I have been doing all of the work as far as meal planning, grocery shopping, cooking, dishes, and meal prep goes. I confronted him about this and he doesn't seem to think it's a problem... he claims that he "didn't think doing this weight loss thing would mean I couldn't have fun." even though we discussed and agreed upon what we would and would not be eating before we even began this. I would like some advice on how I can talk to him about this or what I can do to try and get him back on board. I would like to just not care about what he does but I know that the issues that his weight has caused in our relationship will end up breaking us up if he does not lose it. Please help.

Pushing through an aspect of trauma.

Without wanting to reveal too much, I was abused by someone I loved and now I feel like I am avoiding successful weight loss because I want to avoid being perceived as sexually attractive. I already lost 20kg during 2017/18 with relatively little effort, but I've gained about 8kg back since my situation got worse last year.

I know I can easily stick to 1200 a day, and I enjoy working out--but it's like the rational part of my brain (the one that really wants to succeed and lose it) switches off sometimes and the bad thoughts just overwhelm me, stuff like 'you're already disgusting, it doesn't matter if you eat more shit', 'if you stay fat nobody's going to pressure you into anything' et cetera. I don't exactly binge eat, but on bad mental health days I definitely eat larger portions, stop tracking my calories and avoid my workouts.

Of course it's just a matter of self-control (and therapy lmao), but I was wondering if any of you have advice on dealing with stuff like this. I got a fitbit yesterday since I find being able to track my progress helps me stay motivated and keeps the hurtful thoughts at bay/overwrites them with positive ones.

halfway there

I'm 5'6" and currently at 175, down from 200ish when I started. My all-time ever high was 211. I'd like to see what 150 looks like. The lowest I've been in my adult life was 167 when I got booted from Weight Watchers for getting pregnant. 167 looked pretty good on me (big boned Scandinavian stock).

I'd like to start a detailed CI/CO journal but not enough to bother. Work full-time teaching an insane schedule and what little free time I have I want to do something amusing, not tedious.

I've been eating largely what I want but not necessarily when, or how much, I want. If I'm going to have something more caloric, I try to have it during the early part of the day. I'm also keeping high protein snacks available to munch on periodically. Other than that, lots of veggies, soups and popcorn.

Oh, and beer.

I've discovered that binges cost me an average of 3 lbs. I try to plan for them and make sure they're worth it. I'm always questioning if the things I'm putting in my mouth are making me happy enough to justify the calories.

I also started going to the fitness center at school after work most days for at least an hour. The hardest part about that was getting used to working out with a bunch of teenagers. Oy

For the first time in my life, I'm interested in getting toned as well as smaller. The reason?

Hot flashes. 😆

It's getting to the point that I really want (desperately need???) to strip down to as little as is socially acceptably possible at times. Which means bare arms. I'll be damned if I'm going to run around sleeveless with arms flapping in the wind.

So, other than the fitness center, I'm doing sit-ups and push-ups at home and dancing (nothing disciplined, I just blast music and dance around the house).

My biggest issue is smoking. I really want to quit but am worried the effort will sabotage my mental health and weight loss progress.

I've been able to "take breaks" while using a patch but can't keep it going for long.

With winter in full swing (my god i HATE February) my outdoor time is fairly nonexistent. When it's not a freezing pit of wtf, I love being outdoors. I'm hoping to fill up enough of my time in nicer weather with outdoor activity but now?

Just trying to get through it.

Sorry, this is pretty long.

I am interested in any food or activity suggestions anyone might care to share. Also any encouragement is most welcome! I don't really have a cheering squad in the vicinity. All of my super special peeps live in other states or on other continents.

Peace
