Day 1? Starting your weight loss journey on Monday, 26 August 2019? Start here!

Today is your Day 1?

Welcome to r/Loseit!

So you aren’t sure of how to start? Don’t worry! “How do I get started?” is our most asked question. r/Loseit has helped our users lose over 1,000,000 recorded pounds and these are the steps that we’ve found most useful for getting started.

Why you’re overweight

Our bodies are amazing (yes, yours too!). In order to survive before supermarkets, we had to be able to store energy to get us through lean times, we store this energy as adipose fat tissue. If you put more energy into your body than it needs, it stores it, for (potential) later use. When you put in less than it needs, it uses the stored energy. The more energy you have stored, the more overweight you are. The trick is to get your body to use the stored energy, which can only be done if you give it less energy than it needs, consistently.

Before You Start

The very first step is calculating your calorie needs. You can do that HERE. This will give you an approximation of your calorie needs for the day. The next step is to figure how quickly you want to lose the fat. One pound of fat is equal to 3500 calories. So to lose 1 pound of fat per week you will need to consume 500 calories less than your TDEE (daily calorie needs from the link above). 750 calories less will result in 1.5 pounds and 1000 calories is an aggressive 2 pounds per week.

Tracking

Here is where it begins to resemble work. The most efficient way to lose the weight you desire is to track your calorie intake. This has gotten much simpler over the years and today it can be done right from your smartphone or computer. r/loseit recommends an app like MyFitnessPal, Loseit! (unaffiliated), or Cronometer. Create an account and be honest with it about your current stats, activities, and goals. This is your tracker and no one else needs to see it so don’t cheat the numbers. You’ll find large user created databases that make logging and tracking your food and drinks easy with just the tap of the screen or the push of a button. We also highly recommend the use of a digital kitchen scale for accuracy. Knowing how much of what you're eating is more important than what you're eating. Why? This may explain it.

Creating Your Deficit

How do you create a deficit? This is up to you. r/loseit has a few recommendations but ultimately that decision is yours. There is no perfect diet for everyone. There is a perfect diet for you and you can create it. You can eat less of exactly what you eat now. If you like pizza you can have pizza. Have 2 slices instead of 4. You can try lower calorie replacements for calorie dense foods. Some of the communities favorites are cauliflower rice, zucchini noodles, spaghetti squash in place of their more calorie rich cousins. If it appeals to you an entire dietary change like Keto, Paleo, Vegetarian.

The most important thing to remember is that this selection of foods works for you. Sustainability is the key to long term weight management success. If you hate what you’re eating you won’t stick to it.

Exercise

Is NOT mandatory. You can lose fat and create a deficit through diet alone. There is no requirement of exercise to lose weight.

It has it’s own benefits though. You will burn extra calories. Exercise is shown to be beneficial to mental health and creates an endorphin rush as well. It makes people feel awesome and has been linked to higher rates of long term success when physical activity is included in lifestyle changes.

Crawl, Walk, Run

It can seem like one needs to make a 180 degree course correction to find success. That isn’t necessarily true. Many of our users find that creating small initial changes that build a foundation allows them to progress forward in even, sustained, increments.

Acceptance

You will struggle. We have all struggled. This is natural. There is no tip or trick to get through this though. We encourage you to recognize why you are struggling and forgive yourself for whatever reason that may be. If you overindulged at your last meal that is ok. You can resolve to make the next meal better.

Do not let the pursuit of perfect get in the way of progress. We don’t need perfect. We just want better.

Additional resources

Now you’re ready to do this. Here are more details, that may help you refine your plan.

Looking for (weight loss) “buddy” in Vancouver area!

Hi guys! My name is Amber, I am 31 years old and about 90lb heavier than my ideal weight. I am currently trying to shed those pounds but things are easier and more fun when you have somebody by your side, who is in the same situation. I live in Richmond, near Vancouver, and would like to met somebody who shares some of my problems, like binge eating, boredom eating, over eating, etc, and maybe you would like to do a little exercise with me? Keep each other accountable, share our victories... and so on! You can probably tell that I am socially a little awkward, but I am trying my hardest to nourish my self confidence, maybe finding a friend can help me with that. Cheers, Amber

NSV - Someone finally commented on my weight loss

I went on a cruise in July with my boyfriends’ family. Despite being a little comfortable about my body still, my boyfriend encouraged me to wear a bikini and show off my weight loss progress since January.

An important note is that I’ve been with him for four years. When we met I was severely underweight and transitioned to binge eating in college. His family has seen me progress from underweight to overweight. They’ve never commented on it at all and have always treated me the same.

Today I stopped by their place to say goodbye before heading off to my last semester of college. His parents noted that I looked really healthy and asked if I’d lost weight. I proudly boasted that I had lost ten pounds since July.

They’re the first people, apart from my boyfriend who sees my dieting, to notice and say anything about my weight loss. I’ve really finally found a healthy attitude towards food and managing to balance it with a stressful work life is really satisfying. They solidified my resolve to ignore my temptation to fall into old habits.

So today I’m sending out positive vibes to everyone on their journey. I encourage you to keep going and I’m here to tell you that it’s all worth it in the end.

Looking forward to a healthy marriage

Long time lurker, first time poster here. I recently made the decision to stop drinking, which has always been a saboteur in my weight loss. I'm getting married in about six weeks, followed up with a two week honeymoon. I want to focus the next few weeks on my health. This may not be an ideal time to make changes but when is there ever a time without stress or some event on the horizon? In addition to no booze, I'll be following a portion control plan and getting daily exercise. I'm grateful to have this community. Any one have experience with the relationship between alcohol abstinence and weight loss?

Really struggling with body image issues lately

Hi all! I’m not entirely sure why I’m posting here. I guess I’m just looking to vent and maybe see how other people dealt with similar issues.

So I started my weight loss journey in May, and I’ve lost 35 pounds so far. I’m so proud of myself and I’m really starting to see a difference! I still have a long way to go though, as my goal weight is ~100 pounds away. I’ve been very self conscious about my body for as long as I can remember, even when I was 50 pounds lighter than my current weight. I don’t wear shorts or dresses ever, and I won’t wear tank tops and just generally try to cover myself up as much as possible. While I’ve gained a little bit of confidence with the weight I’ve lost, I still cover up as much as possible.

I’ve recently gotten romantically involved with a guy, which is new for me. The past few years I’ve been single and gone on maybe a handful of dates, but I had just kind of stopped pursuing relationships or any sort of intimacy. I’ve been seeing this guy for a few months now, and it just kind of happened on accident. He’s really great and hasn’t given me any reason to feel self conscious around him. The thing is he is in really good shape and is just pretty conventionally attractive in general. So I should be feeling great about this! But for some reason, my head keeps going to this place where I think “there must be something wrong with him. If he’s attracted to me, surely he’s desperate because he can’t get someone thinner”. Which is really stupid logic, because I’ve seen his exes, and they were thin and attractive.

I’m frustrated with myself because I see how messed up it is that I can’t fathom someone being attracted to me the way that I am without there being some major flaw with the person. I feel like I have imposter syndrome, like I don’t belong with someone who is in better shape than I am (even though I definitely have a healthier lifestyle than him currently). I really need to work on liking myself more, because as proud as I am of my progress, I still am so self conscious.

Have any of you guys dealt with feeling this way? Is there anything that helped you to feel less insecure? Right now I feel like I won’t be comfortable until I’m much closer to my goal weight, but I don’t want to feel like I HAVE to be there to be good enough.

Starting weight loss (~510lbs) and a mentality shift

Hello all, I'm 22M, 6'5" and currently just over 500 hundred pounds. I recently started grad school and a lot of changes in my life After years of not caring I've finally started to convince myself that i really do want to be healthy. I'm starting to moderate my diet and begin exercising but it is still very difficult and times and it can be difficult to ask others for help. Today I tried yoga for the first time and have been eating healthy all day and honestly think I can feel a difference. I have no idea how long this journey will take and I truly hope I'll be able to keep up this change and motivation.

I want to ask if anyone out there has experience trying to loose a large amount of weight and if there's any advice they could give me on different exercises or eating tips I could try and where to find them? At my current weight many common exercises people have told me to do are painful and difficult but yoga seemed fairly helpful and within reach. Is this a potentially good place to start?

Officially started my weight loss journey last week and down 5lbs!

I'm an ex collegiate Offensive Lineman who's ready to shed off the fat sustained from playing this position since 6th grade. Recently graduated with my BS in Exercise Science, looking to become a Head Strength and Conditioning Coach one day.

I've spent the last 8 years of High School and College working out like crazy with top class S&C coaches so I've accumulated and maintained a lot of muscle mass while always holding my body weight over 300lbs for football (328lbs at my very heaviest!)

Anyways, I've been putting off losing my playing weight for 6 months, as I rested my body from the game and now I'm ready to really freaking do this thing. I'm excited to essentially use my degree and knowledge on my self as my own project peel away the fat to see the muscle I have underneath. My biggest downfall has usually been my internal motivation, so I'm super happy to join this positive-encouraging community to help keep me accountable.

So here I am starting this journey as a 23 year old Male, measuring in at 6'2" and 300lbs at 26%BF. Goal weight is 245lbs as I love weight training and want to stay big, and ~12-14%BF

LET'S GO
