NSV - My boss noticed!

Long time lurker, first time poster. Thank you to everyone on this sub, for the record. Y'all keep me motivated and it's so comforting to know I'm not the only one who feels like weight loss takes a century.

For context, I've been struggling with weight and body image since my childhood. My stepdad (lovingly) called me Chubs when I played softball on his team, I was always the heaviest of my friends and I've spent years absolutely HATING myself for it. Now as an adult, I'm definitely worlds more comfortable with my body image, but that doesn't mean I want to stay this way. I recently took an entry position in something that wound up being my dream career: ballroom dance. While for now I just run the desk, one day I hope to teach, compete, and perform. Of course, dancing is HARD on the joints when you're heavy like me (20F, 5'4, SW roughly 220 lbs give or take). My weight was inhibiting my joy, my dancing, and my sex life. I decided I'd had enough. Slowly I started counting calories again, even if I fell off the wagon with the app I'd keep track in my head. Dancing as often as I could, cutting carbs and sugars where I could. My boyfriend notices the difference constantly and praises my hard work, but I never really see it. Finally, the other day, my boss looked at me and said "Wow, varsaat, you look like you've been losing weight!" It's the smallest shit, but I look up to my boss so much and it meant a lot that she actually Noticed.

Sorry for the ramble, but the scale hasn't been moving so I'll take what I can get 😅

Eating healthy, but never seem to lose weight. Frustrated!

Hello reddit! I am a 31 year old female who has been a little on the heavier side her whole life. I am 5’5” 150 lbs and fit into size 8. I have a very athletic body and put muscle on easily, I’m an avid gym goer who lifts weights and does cardio. However, I am constantly struggling to drop pounds. I’m not trying to become a size 2 or do anything drastic, but I would like to shed 10-20 pounds and fit into a size 6. Despite having good muscle tone, I have considerable “fluff” on top of it. A number of years ago I went on a super restrictive ketogenic diet and lost 30 lbs, but I was doing it for digestive issues and not for weight loss. During that time I dropped pounds effortlessly, but my periods were out of whack (got them every 60 days), felt “off” emotionally and mentally, and slept terribly. So when my digestive issues resolved, I resumed a more relaxed diet but retained similar ways of eating. Here is my current exercise and diet status:

Exercise: minimum 3 days a week, but I typically get in 5 days. I workout 45 mins - 1 hour. Cardio to warm up, followed by lifting weights (reps in the 12-20 range), then finish with cardio. Compound lifts (squats, deads, etc) are at the center of my workout. I used to do more HIIT but I currently have terrible plantar fasciitis and have been restricted to biking. I enjoy working out! Been active all my life, my biggest restriction is work hours and schedules but I find ways around it.

Diet: I should say that ever since I was a kid I have eaten what most people consider a healthy whole food diet. There was never junk food or soda in the house. I have always loved vegetables and fruits. I always drink water or green tea (without sugar). I try to cook for myself and I usually bring my own food to work. I describe my diet as paleo-inspired where I avoid sugar and grains, but I do eat dairy. I also try to be carb conscious without cutting them out completely. Here is what I currently eat in a day: Breakfast: Greek yogurt, walnuts, chia seeds, berries Lunch: hard boiled eggs, blueberries, chia seeds Snack: nuts, or apples w/ cheese, dark chocolate Dinner: meat with veggies and sweet potato

I should say I’m not perfect. There are occasions during an overnight shift where I will grab a bag of potato chips or have a candy bar. But I am disciplined 90% of the time, and it’s to a point where I don’t know what to eat anymore. I really don’t want to go back to that restrictive ketogenic diet I was on before because I physically felt terrible on it despite losing weight. Any thoughts or insights would be very helpful!

How much did you lose when you stopped drinking alcohol?

Hi all, I've been seriously trying to lose weight for about a year now, and I've only lost about 25lbs. (I've lost 40lbs over all) I plan to keep losing until I have a flat stomach as I want a boob job (lol) and don't want to spend the $$$$ unless it looks amazing. I'm guessing it should be about 25 more lbs.

I am doing CICO, and I am losing weight, feeling better, etc., but my main problem is alcohol. Ya girl can DRINK. I went to a party heavy college, and all of my friends revolve every activity around alcohol. Pool day? Corona time. Small kick back playing Mario Kart? Wine time. Beach trip? White claws on white claws. I have made the effort to drink the low cal options like rum and diet coke, spiked seltzer waters, vodka and mios, etc., but I can literally drink 15 drinks in a day. Another thing to mention is that I have FOUR roommates that I went to college with that could drink Winston Churchill under the table. I am constantly surrounded by alcohol and people who just really love to drink it.

I feel like I am sabotaging myself on the weekends, but I don't know how to keep the same social life without binge drinking. My best friend will literally scream "SHAME" in my face if I turn down a shot, or "LAME, you used to be so fun" if I tell her I'm taking it easy. I love her to death but I feel like I have to lie to her about trying to drink less.

My questions are:

  1. How much will cutting out/back alcohol actually affect my weight loss?
  2. How do I stay engaged in my social circle and live with my roomies without drinking?

Please advise!

10 Fruits That Taste Awesome Grilled

Open-flame cooking brings out the best flavor in just about every food. When you grill vegetables and fruits, their natural sugars caramelize and they taste even sweeter. Many favorite fruits are fast and easy to grill, and they make a deliciously different ingredient, side dish, snack, or treat. Because they are nutrient-rich, filled with fiber, and low to medium on the Glycemic Index, fresh fruits are SmartCarbs you can enjoy without impeding progress toward your weight loss goal. Just be sure to consult your Grocery Guide for proper portion sizes.

Ready to try grilled fruit? Here are a few tips for success with all fruits and hints for enjoying 10 great tastes of the season:

Basket, Pan or Skewers

The grates that came with your grill are shaped for cooking meat, but less substantial ingredients, such as pieces of fruit, are prone to falling through as they heat up. When grilling fruit, put it in a wire basket or on a tray with small holes that allow the flames to touch the food but keep it from falling through. Another fun option: soak wooden skewers (like those used for kebabs) in water for 30 minutes, poke them through the fruit, then put them on the grill.

Go Large

Fruit cooks quickly on the grill and within minutes small pieces can begin to disintegrate. Cut it it in large chunks, even if you need to slice it down to bite-size before serving.

Light Oil

Spraying cut fruit with zero-calorie cooking spray, or tossing cut fruit with a little olive or coconut oil or butter before grilling helps bring out its flavor and prevents the pieces from sticking to the basket, pan or grates. Avoid drenching the food in fats, which can lead to a grease fire. Just coat it lightly.

Low, Indirect Heat

Cooking over high flames can leave you with burned fruit in a matter of minutes. Better to grill fruit on the outer edges of the grates or over coals that have turned gray.

Let Cool

Fruits contain a lot of water, which becomes extremely hot when grilling. Allow it to cool after removing it from the heat before eating so that scorchingly hot water doesn’t squirt out and burn your mouth when you bite into it.

So now that you know the HOW of grilling fruit, here’s the WHAT:

1. Peaches

Slice in half and remove the pits. For more flavor, brush with honey and sprinkle them with cinnamon. Put peach halves on the grill with the cut side down and cook for eight to 10 minutes, until fruit is hot throughout.

2. Plums

Like peaches, cut in half and remove the pits before cooking. Leave on the grill for four to six minutes, until the flesh is tender but not crumbling.

3. Apples

Peel, cut into quarters and remove the core and seeds. Sprinkle with lemon juice to keep the cut pieces from turning brown. Grill for 20 minutes, turning every five minutes.

[Q&A] If you practice eating at a deficit, how do you avoid becoming number-obsessed?

Hey all! Let me start by saying, I see all of you working towards your goal weight, an internet stranger is proud (and slightly jealous) of you.

Now, on to my question: (Background: my main form of exercise is walking, I really don't enjoy it at all. So counter this, I eat at a deficit, 1200 calories) If you're like me, and focus on diet and not exercise for your weight loss journey, how do you avoid becoming obsessed with the calories in every bite?

Also, has anyone here come close to developing anorexia-type issues because of it? I get such a rush of joy from seeing that I stayed under my calorie goal for the day, that I work towards not making the counter read 1200. Seeing my own behaviour warns me of a bad pattern. Does anyone have advice on how to deal with this?

Again - keep on keeping on y'all! all the love
