do you ever need to binge to break a plateau?

This is the weirdest thing I’ve ever noticed and I don’t even know how I started to notice that this was a thing but throughout my 30lb weight loss journey i hit plateaus like four times and noticed that if I couldn’t break it within a week, I would eat outside of my calorie budget and the plateau would break!

I don’t really count calories because I sort of treat those days as cheat meals but for example I haven’t been able to break 148 for WEEKS like just constantly fluctuating between 149 and 148 but last Saturday Saturday I ate: a pbj sandwich, 3 slices of pizza, a veggie burger and soft serve. So not exactly sure how many calories but def more than I usually eat and woke up the next morning at 146.9 and am back to my usual rate of shedding lbs since!

Has anyone ever noticed this? It’s literally so weird

Does anyone want to start an accountability group?

I was thinking of starting a weight loss group with 4 other people if anyone from the community is interested. It would include daily check-ins on diet & physical activity and weekly weigh-ins. I could set up a Slack channel and we could go from there!

Prerequisite: Must be serious about losing weight and contributing to the group - I'd really like to create a group that can motivate each other and keeps us all accountable. No specific diet necessary - just people who want to lose it.

DM me if you're interested and when we get to five (me plus four) people I'll send out the Slack invite. Cheers!

My body seems to like a certain weight, but I like my body better at a lower one. Why does it prefer a certain weight? Would it be healthy for me to attempt to reach that lower weight?

Hi!

Apologies if this sounds like a weird or stupid question, I tend to ask those a lot. Also sorry if this doesn’t make any sense either, I’m having some trouble trying to describe my situation well.

I am a 21 y/o female, 5'5, and I currently weigh 125 lbs with it fluctuating to 130 or so depending on my diet and level of activity that week. I know these are perfectly healthy numbers, my body just doesn’t wear it well is the thing. My activity level ranges from quite sedentary to consistent levels of activity that have me lightly sweating for several hours at a time due to work, all within the week. My goal weight is 115 lbs as that’s the only weight where I lose fat in my biggest insecurity areas where my body stores most of my fat.

I have weighed 115 lbs before but it was due to some extreme circumstances. My freshman year of college I stress lost the freshman 15 due to constant fast-walking uphill in*hot* weather and not eating due to stress and also poor. After that, I found it hard to eat. I would get nauseous constantly, dizzy, and was constantly tired. I ended up weighing 108 at my lowest. This was all within a year or so, so it was not a huge amount of weight loss in a short amount of time. My blood tests all came back perfectly healthy and were well within what was healthy for a girl my age and size (I saw a doctor bc I was worried about how tired and nauseous I was, they said nothing was wrong with me). I wasn’t eating much as it was painful to eat at that point, but when I could it was very healthy.

I eventually was able to start eating more consistently and I didn’t think I was eating that much, just like three meals a day and some snacks, sometimes. I gained 20 lbs in less than 6 months. I don’t get it. I just don’t understand why my body works like that. Why does it not like 115? Why 130?? I literally have to watch what I eat so closely to weigh the 125 I do now and even then I’m pretty sure I’m just losing the same five pounds of water weight. Ironically, I also have the ability to lose weight quite easily (yes I swear I suffer from both dilemas), I also gain it very easily.

I want to get back to 115 pounds but if I don’t eat once every couple hours, I get tired and sluggish. My blood sugar tested perfectly fine as well even when I was 110 lbs and not eating often so I don’t think it’s that. I’m confused as to why my body won’t let me weigh less than 120 without fighting me on it?

I used a calorie calculator and it says that I should be able to get to 115 in about two months with daily exercise and an intake of like 1500 to average it out.

Would it be healthy for me to steadily lose weight to 115 lbs despite the way my body seems to fight me when I weigh this much? I really don’t understand why it does. Does anybody know why it might do this to me?

Like I said, this is a stupid question but I’m really confused by it. I hope this makes even an iota is sense.

Thank you for any advice or help!

Ate well under my TDEE and still gained some weight?

Hi,

So i'm early in my weight loss, just at it for 2 weeks, but i've been successful at it before and understand the basics of what I need to do. Plus I come on here daily for tips and motivation.

Before starting I calculated me TDEE which is 2,260 calories. I didn't want to implement exercise just yet so I balanced it out by restricting to 1,000-1,200 calories a day. This has been working quite well for me so far. I structure 3 meals for the day, log everything, and stay away from snacking.

Yesterday was a bit stressful, and i ended up snacking quite a bit however I continued to track everything and drank my 4l of water. My snacks were roasted almonds (that i would weigh out and log) and a fruit. I had that snack 3 times yesterday. I didn't have time to cook so I ate packets of smoked salmon and cucumbers for lunch and dinner. I felt a little bad about straying but my intake totalled at 1292 calories, which is still well under my TDEE so I figured I wouldn't lose any progress.

This morning I woke up and weighed myself and I gained .6 kilos (1.3 pounds) which is a little disheartening because I know what it is like to truly binge and I didn't constitute my mess up yesterday to count as a binge. Also I'm confused how I would have gained this weight even when i stayed 900 cal under my limit. Can someone help me understand what happened?

feeling uncertain about my progress

age: 25
sex: female
height: 165 cm / 5'5"
starting weight: 103 kg / 227 lbs
current weight: 84 kg / 185 lbs
lost weight so far: 19 kg / 42 lbs
goal weight: 70 kg / 154 lbs
weight left to lose: 14 kg / 31 lbs

lost most of my weight: between 2017 september and 2018 december
plateauing: between 2018 december until 2019 october - my weight moved between 85-83 kg / 187-182 lbs
started going to the gym: 2019 october 12th
started tracking my calories: 2019 november 13th
BMR: 1837 according to a smart scale
diet: I eat 1500 kcal a day - about 330 kcal calorie deficit diet
work out routine: 1 hour cardio on the threadmil, and light weight lifting with my arms every other day

hey everyone

So mostly I'm not uncertain about how slowly I'm losing weight since everyone is different and university stood in my way for a whole year. I'm uncertain about how I feel about my looks. I know shallow. anyway I feel like I look much better since I lost half of my overweight like I actually feel like I look kind of nice when I'm wearing a nice outfit but I still feel unattractive when I'm naked.

It's also really hard to be patient with the weight loss journey. I want to be there already. and I often feel close to the end of it when I'm not, mostly bc I have been on it for about 2 years now.

and I can already feel the changes in my body since I have been going to the gym and even more since I have been tracking my calories. I know it sounds crazy but I definitely have less fat overall my body. I can feel and SEE that there's less fat hanging on my belly, above my knees, on my hips and above my elbows. hell even my face look less puffy and my double chin definitely look a bit smaller.

but it's still not enough. I still have 14 kg / 31 lbs to lose. I still have too much fat on my body, I know. but I swear I don't feel like I'm that fat since I do relatively well in the gym and bc how well I eat most days. not to sounds crazy but I feel like I'm doing things that fit people do bc that will lead me to become a fit person myself. but I don't look like a fit person yet and that drives me crazy.

and I could go on for ages about this topic but I won't bc this post is already long.

How my weight loss became a catalyst for a job promotion

Ive had joint pain in my right foot for a few years now. Ive been to countless doctors and the best I got was “Idk , maybe it’s swelling caused by an unknown source”. Not a single doctor recommended weight loss. The pain had gotten so bad I was unable to walk through the store with out taking a break. My pain caused me to live my life from the sidelines. I couldn’t do sports. I switched to working a desk job. I avoided simple thing like squatting or driving because of the pressure it put on my foot.

January first is when I took responsibility for my life. I was obese, I was depressed, I had no hobbies and my joints hurt so bad I couldn’t walk more then a few hundred feet.

I started swimming because it’s zero impact. I fell in love with that hour of quiet. The water was cool, I could clear my mind, and I always felt better about my self after a workout.

Soon I picked up kayaking and bicycling with my husband. Still low/no impact on my foot. It’s been great! We get out in nature. Enjoy the peacefulness of the lake or the smell of the trees as we ride by.

One day I noticed that I had made it through the grocery store without stopping. And in general, I hadn’t complained about my foot for a while. So I started doing more physical work; Weight lifting, hiking, and putting in manual labor hours at my bosses house after work.

Normally I do cold calls for the guy, Im one of the top producers. But slowly Ive become his “ranch hand”. Feeding the animals. Basic repairs here and there. Taking care of the animals. Yard work, ripping out bushes/trees. My husband and I built him a pool enclosure. I just finished laying fencing around his 6 acre property. And now we’re starting to build covering for his deck.

Yesterday, the owner comes up to me. He complimented my work ethic. He said that most the people that come over to help, don’t complete half the stuff I do. He said he’s impressed that I do so much heavy lifting “as a woman “. He says he’s creating a new department for the company and he wants me to manage it.

Im very excited and grateful for the opportunity. My weight loss journey has had so many serendipities along the way. Its improved my mental health. Ive gained hobbies. Ive met new friends to enjoy those hobbies with. My marriage has flourished. Ive lost pain that crippled my life and now my job is getting better too.

Its interesting how much life I gained when I lost some weight.

What are some of the serendipities that have come along on your journey?
