1200cal is too low — here's my confusion.

I often see nutritionists / dietitians / fitness gurus on TikTok saying that 1200cal is way too low for an adult, or that 1200cal is the caloric need of a toddler, and that an adult should consume about 1300-2000cal per day. Toddlers move a lot, no? That's why they require high calories. What about me, a person who really just likes to sit/lie down most of the time? While I understand the concern that humans should not eat too low calories because it will be damaging to the body, I cannot fully grasp the concept that 1200cal is "too little" for someone in a caloric deficit, especially if that someone is a not very tall, very sedentary Southeast Asian woman like me.

I am 24y/o, 5"1 tall, weighing 64kg / 141lbs. I started my weight loss journey being 72kg last year. After measuring my BMR with a body composition scale, my BMR turned out to be 1312, and my maintenance is 1473. Of course, adding some walking / other activities, my body will burn more calories. See but that's the thing. I rarely move. I am very sedentary.

By the logic of eating 300 cal less than your maintenance calories to lose weight, I'm supposed to eat 1173cal. I rounded off the number, therefore I eat 1200cal everyday, with balanced macros.

So when these people say 1200cal is too low, I feel so confused. How many calories am I supposed to eat if I want to lose weight then? Does anyone else question the same thing?

Looking for advice

40M/257lb/6'2

Little back story. Been almost a year since I almost died. Went to ER severely septic. Lost part of my foot and require the use of a special orthotic boot to walk now. Was 290 before getting sick and left 242 in the ER. Lost a lot of muscle in the process. Have rebuilt some of that now through BWF progression and resistance bands. Wanting to get my weight down to 225-230 area. I'm disabled from the right leg damage and other mental disorders so I can't goto a gym. I have access to a magnetic rower and 200 lbs of resistance bands. Having a hard time figuring out my diet routine. Been tracking with myfitnesspal for 3 weeks now and stopped snacking. Don't eat after 6 pm and eat around 8 am breakfast. Is my weight loss not happening as of yet due to body restructuring? Or am i messing up somewhere? Any tips or advice are welcome. Trying to get control of this before I end up losing my leg so I don't struggle with the transition period. Thanks in advance.

1. Pot of Gold St. Patrick’s Day Shake >

shamrock shake

Every St. Patrick’s Day, it begins: The commercials and advertisements for the season’s quintessential minty shake start flooding your TV, radio and social media channels. You know the shake we’re talking about: It’s got fat-packed vanilla soft serve blended with a super sugary syrup and topped with whipped topping. Tasty? Maybe. But it comes at a cost. A medium shake clocks in at calories and a whopping 78 grams of sugar. Not exactly diet-friendly. Skip the fat trap, and opt instead for our deliciously creamy shake that’s got all the minty flavor of the Irish-themed treat without all the calories and sugar. It’s a delicious way to celebrate the season without compromising your weight loss goals. Get the recipe here >

2. Irish “Potato” Pancakes >

Irish Potato Pancakes
This healthier take on a traditional Irish treat is so unbelievably tasty, you’re going to want to make it all year-long. The pancake batter consists of clean, whole ingredients like cottage cheese, eggs, oats, vanilla extract, cinnamon and baking powder, and the drool-worthy cream cheese drizzle is a creamy combination of Neufchatel cheese, Greek yogurt, skim milk and stevia extract. And, as if these flavorful combinations aren’t enough to satisfy your pancake itch, you’ll top your Irish “Potato” Pancakes with sweet shredded coconut. Seriously… yum.

Ive finally reached my goal

Im an 18 yeard old male . (179cm)I started weight loss journey around the 18th of sep and i was 86kg. I set my target at 70kg even though i would i have like to be a little lower but 70 was more realistic . I first started with different diets but i would just he in a bad mood all day and find it hard to concentrate in school. I decided rather still eat what i like but of course counting calories and i started training which was easier for me than others as ive always liked and enjoyed sport.i could barely run 1km or do 50 skips. Due to my diet becoming less strict i became happier and training was the best thing for my mental health which i wouod say helped through the entire journey. Anyway fast track its 6 months later and i have finally reached 70kg , i can run 5km easily and skip 1200 a day . The best part of the weight loss journey is the self confidence ive built and ive become a happier person. I just wanted to say thanks for all the tips that ive read in this subreddit and my journey to maintenance begins now

Have any of you ever dealt with not having a sudden rush of weight loss at the start of your journey?

Hey guys.

So I’ve been down this road before. Lost 40 pounds in 2015 when I was 25 but then progressively put it back on again over several years. It knocked my confidence and I had trouble sticking to CICO again for a long time.

So I’ve spent the past year really focused on sorting my mind out. I’ve read some great books on mindset and stoic philosophy and I can safely say that the things that drove me to bing eat and constantly be 30-40 pounds overweight are cured. Mentally I feel like a completely different person.

But here’s the thing: I reached my highest weight in January at 228 pounds. I’m floating around 218-221 now but it’s been stuck there for 5-6 weeks. I know you hear of a lot of people not understanding plateaus, but early plateaus seem to be a big thing for me. I slowly lose water weight for a few weeks and then I stall. I count and weigh every calorie and I’m doing strength training for 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week (as I said: totally changed mindset).

I’m just wondering if any of you have dealt with this? All of the literature seems to suggest that most people experience sudden and rapid weight loss at first and then it slows, but mine seems to be consistently slow. And it worries me every now and then that maybe I’m missing some other problem.

I’m a male, 29. I eat 1650 calories a day Monday to Friday and 2000 on Saturdays and Sundays. +/- 10% every day.

When I talk about mindset btw: old me at this point would have said "its pointless, I cant change. Eat this tub of ben and jerries." New me is thinking "Well you cant control the pace, but you can control what you put into your body, regardless"

Would love to hear your experiences. Thanks.

Have to break the cycle

5'11, 17m.

So, I've been stuck at around 200 pounds for a couple years now. My weight loss journey began with the goal of improving my looks, and that's still my main focus, however I'm having a really hard time getting there. What ends up happening is I'll commit to eating a certain number of calories per day (typically 1500), and log all of my meals accurately... But then, come evening I lose my shit and become absolutely ravenous, destroying any and all progress I've made. It's frustrating beyond belief because the cycle seems unbreakable, it's been like this for nearly two years. When cravings start, I don't even think to ignore them. It's like a primal urge to stuff my face with as much food as humanly possible; it simply can't be resisted.

How am I ever going to get to where I want to be if I keep self-sabotaging like this? How do I stop??? I would see a professional but navigating the healthcare system is an absolute fucking nightmare right now, take it from my parents lol.

Terribly dissapointed in my weight loss

Hi everyone, I’m a 21-year-old man, with a weight of 109 kg (240 lbs) and a height of 180 cm (5’11 ft). I’ve been reading a lot about weight loss (IF, CICO) and I started intermittent fasting on a 18:6 schedule about a month ago. I’ve been tracking my calories with MyFitnessPal, I only exceeded 1200 like 5 times and not by a lot ( I know I shouldn’t do that but I’m a student and I go to parties sometimes🤷🏻‍♂️) I quit weed 2 or 3 months ago so I don’t overeat anymore ( and also to rebuild my mental health). I also pay attention to what I eat, I don’t drink milk, don’t eat eggs and I generally have healthy meals. I started working out 2 weeks ago, I hit the gym every day, besides Sundays, when I do cardio I usually burn between 400-500 calories. I don’t feel like I can eat any less and properly pay attention in class. My problem is, that I only lost around 1 kg (2.2 lbs) since I started IF and CICO. I’m 21 so it clearly should be a lot more right? I remember, in 2019 I lost 20 kgs in 2-3 months (44 lbs). I’ve gained 10 back since the lockdowns started, and I feel and look terrible. I’m going back to Hungary to uni in 2-3 weeks and the gyms are closed over there so I’m only gonna be able to do cardio. I know I should quit drinking altogether but it’s really hard lookin at people getting drunk and having fun while I’m sober. What the hell should I do?

TL;DR Lost 1 kg, been doing IF, CICO for a month, been hitting the gym for two weeks. I feel like shit and I’m not satisfied with my progress at all.
