Mom wants to celebrate my first month of weight loss... by going out to eat

I texted my mom to update her on my 15 lb loss since today was my 1 month mark and I was super proud. Her response was that we can go out to eat tonight then... to celebrate me losing 15 lbs? I asked why I would celebrate eating less food with eating more food, and she said “because that’s what we do.” Eating out usually leads me to binge eating. I’ve only had a few meals out this past month and I always made sure they fit in my calories the day, or at least came close. It’s so irritating that family members would sabotage your diet as an excuse to go out to eat. I just needed somewhere to rant and I know a lot of you guys deal with family trying to sabotage your weight loss. I wouldn’t mind some advice on this either, if anyone has it.

Eating at a maintenance but still losing weight

Hey guys, I recently stopped my diet, and am now eating at a maintenance, which according to the TDEE calculator on calculator.net, is about 1850 calories. I am 169cm and 17 years old. I started my weight loss at my heaviest at 80.3 kg, but have successfully gone down to 57kg, which was my goal weight. However, about a month ago, I stopped eating at a deficit and started eating at a maintenance. However, after eating 1850 calories, I am still losing weight. Its become pretty alarming, as I've entered the point in which I am 55kg, and am about 3kg away from being underweight. Its not like I'm eating shit food either, I'm eating like oats, chicken breasts, wraps, lot of veggies.

Any way to stop losing weight?

Need help and advice for the start of my weight loss journey.

Hey everyone, I’m 23 years old(male), I’m 5,10 and 255 pounds, after years of insecurity about my weight I’m now determined more than ever to start losing weight and actually start to be more confident in myself, but I just have no clue where to start. I just signed up at a gym and my main goal for right now is to focus on losing belly fat cause that’s where I carry most of my weight. I have no clue what workouts to do, or what one is best to help loose the belly fat. And secondly I have 0 clue about diet. Diet is one of the main things that has held me back because I have no idea what I’m doing. Any advice would be very appreciated, Thanks!

Day 1? Starting your weight loss journey on Tuesday, 23 February 2021? Start here!

Today is your Day 1?

Welcome to r/Loseit!

So you aren’t sure of how to start? Don’t worry! “How do I get started?” is our most asked question. r/Loseit has helped our users lose over 1,000,000 recorded pounds and these are the steps that we’ve found most useful for getting started.

Why you’re overweight

Our bodies are amazing (yes, yours too!). In order to survive before supermarkets, we had to be able to store energy to get us through lean times, we store this energy as adipose fat tissue. If you put more energy into your body than it needs, it stores it, for (potential) later use. When you put in less than it needs, it uses the stored energy. The more energy you have stored, the more overweight you are. The trick is to get your body to use the stored energy, which can only be done if you give it less energy than it needs, consistently.

Before You Start

The very first step is calculating your calorie needs. You can do that HERE. This will give you an approximation of your calorie needs for the day. The next step is to figure how quickly you want to lose the fat. One pound of fat is equal to 3500 calories. So to lose 1 pound of fat per week you will need to consume 500 calories less than your TDEE (daily calorie needs from the link above). 750 calories less will result in 1.5 pounds and 1000 calories is an aggressive 2 pounds per week.

Tracking

Here is where it begins to resemble work. The most efficient way to lose the weight you desire is to track your calorie intake. This has gotten much simpler over the years and today it can be done right from your smartphone or computer. r/loseit recommends an app like MyFitnessPal, Loseit! (unaffiliated), or Cronometer. Create an account and be honest with it about your current stats, activities, and goals. This is your tracker and no one else needs to see it so don’t cheat the numbers. You’ll find large user created databases that make logging and tracking your food and drinks easy with just the tap of the screen or the push of a button. We also highly recommend the use of a digital kitchen scale for accuracy. Knowing how much of what you're eating is more important than what you're eating. Why? This may explain it.

Creating Your Deficit

How do you create a deficit? This is up to you. r/loseit has a few recommendations but ultimately that decision is yours. There is no perfect diet for everyone. There is a perfect diet for you and you can create it. You can eat less of exactly what you eat now. If you like pizza you can have pizza. Have 2 slices instead of 4. You can try lower calorie replacements for calorie dense foods. Some of the communities favorites are cauliflower rice, zucchini noodles, spaghetti squash in place of their more calorie rich cousins. If it appeals to you an entire dietary change like Keto, Paleo, Vegetarian.

The most important thing to remember is that this selection of foods works for you. Sustainability is the key to long term weight management success. If you hate what you’re eating you won’t stick to it.

Exercise

Is NOT mandatory. You can lose fat and create a deficit through diet alone. There is no requirement of exercise to lose weight.

It has it’s own benefits though. You will burn extra calories. Exercise is shown to be beneficial to mental health and creates an endorphin rush as well. It makes people feel *awesome* and has been linked to higher rates of long term success when physical activity is included in lifestyle changes.

Crawl, Walk, Run

It can seem like one needs to make a 180 degree course correction to find success. That isn’t necessarily true. Many of our users find that creating small initial changes that build a foundation allows them to progress forward in even, sustained, increments.

Acceptance

You will struggle. We have all struggled. This is natural. There is no tip or trick to get through this though. We encourage you to recognize why you are struggling and forgive yourself for whatever reason that may be. If you overindulged at your last meal that is ok. You can resolve to make the next meal better.

Do not let the pursuit of perfect get in the way of progress. We don’t need perfect. We just want better.

Hurt myself running, now feeling a little discouraged

I’m about 10 lbs into what I want to be an 80 lb weight loss (250>170, 6’ male). I used to be a pretty avid treadmill runner, so I bit the bullet and bought myself a treadmill to exercise at home. First 2 weeks were hard but going well and over the course of 7 runs I got up to 30 mins straight at 5 mph. Not exactly a marathon but I was pretty pleased considering my current weight and fitness level. Problem came over the last few consecutive runs where I was feeling worse and worse after each one, and finally on Friday after my 4th day in a row running I felt like I really overdid it. Ever since my feet/ankles/legs have felt completely destroyed, and have since been aching terribly day and night. It keeps me up at night and I feel like I can barely walk sometimes. I thought it would go away in a day or 2 but it still feels terrible and feels like it will for more days to come. Plus my whole body feels drained and I can even feel my core ache a bit. I know what typical soreness feels like from working out for the first time in a while and this feels beyond that. I feel like I really overworked them and potentially gave myself a mild injury. It feels so frustrating to have been making such good progress, and spending all the money and effort getting the treadmill for this to happen. Not to mention that I’m going to probably have to not run at all for a while and just walk on it with an incline because I’m so fat. Even though I’m cardiovascularly and mentally fit enough to do the runs. I’m doing my best to stay motivated with my diet but this is a real bummer and I’m in so much physical pain right now. sorry for the rant but I just had to get it off my chest!

TL/DR: Bought a treadmill for home exercise but I absolutely destroyed my feet/ankles/legs in a couple weeks because I found out I’m too fat to even run. In a lot or pain now and feeling discouraged.

Advice on clothes buying

Question for those of you who have lost a larger amount of weight. Did you buy new clothes throughout your weight loss? Or did you wait until you were closer to your goal weight and just dealt with baggy clothes?

I (31F) have currently lost just under 50lbs (highest 257lbs current 208lbs) and none of my clothes fit anymore. I am really tempted to buy some new clothes but I am hoping to lose another 50lbs and I feel like it would be a waste of money if I only wear them for a few weeks time. I did buy new bras a couple weeks ago and they are already feeling loose and I feel like I maybe should have just stuck it out with the ill-fitting ones until I reach my final goal. The only bottoms I own that actually fit are my workout pants (and a few are getting a bit big) which thankfully I can wear to work but I don't want to live in the same 5 pairs of pants every day.

F24/155cm - 70kgs > 49.8kgs (May 2019 - February 2021) - Progress and thoughts throughout my journey!

WL Progress May 2019 - Feb 2021

Started out at 70kgs and I'm currently sitting at 49.8kgs. In the top half of the pictures, I felt tired, sluggish and slow - both mentally and physically. There were good days but most were bad days, clothes didn't seem to fit right (I kept tugging at my tummy area to hide my stomach) and I decided it was time to change. I've always been on the heavier side since I was a kid, owing to genetics (my bodytype leans towards endo-mesomorph; gain fat and muscle easily essentially) and bad diet. I started off my weight loss journey with CICO and keto and dropped quite a lot of weight in the first few months; this was paired with HIIT and just more movement and activity in general.

By June/July 2019, I was in the low 60s and I'd moved to Switzerland for work. I did not keep up with keto and just switched back to carbs (albeit in moderation) and I did not really actively hit the gym either - I ate a balanced diet, I most definitely had my indulgent days (Swiss chocolate, cheese, meats) and drinking nights out with colleagues but by the end of 2019, I managed to keep the weight off and dropped to around 57kgs. I had a great time there and I owe the added weight loss to lots and lots of LISS (walking) as I lived in a small city with great views, I walked alot. At this point, I was not counting calories either!

In 2020, I started weight training and dropped to about 54kgs and remained there for quite a bit - I was perfectly fine with this, but I now have a defined goal of wanting to drop body fat and build muscle mass. From hereon, I did start calorie counting again as I had macros I wanted to achieve within a day (protein being the highest) in a deficit (around 1200-1300) - I am still in my cutting phase and will reassess in a month or so on where I'm at - from there, I plan to move to maintenance or a slight surplus so I can start building more muscle! My weight training focuses alot on legs, deadlifts, squats, hip thrusts, split squats and also arm work, as I have flabbier arms (prone to storing fat there) and I would like firmer and stronger arms.

All in all, I would say I never thought I'd get to the point I am now with my body but here I am, so it is possible. And it does not have to be boring either - my weight loss journey has incorporated a variety of diets and lifestyle changes (but CICO is most important) and they all worked to keep the weight off - I have a healthy relationship with exercise now (I enjoy it and don't see it as a punishment anymore) and mentally, I have a changed relationship with food. Healthy food can taste good, seasoned well etc. but eating "unhealthy" food sometimes is also ok - everything in moderation! Good luck to anyone else in the same place as I was - you can do it! :)
