[No Oven] Never really learned to shop healthy. What are some healthy foods I should always have in the house?

This is less about weight loss and more about eating well in general.

I've learned that over the course of the past couple months, I'm awful at shopping for food. I'll buy a bunch of items that I think will be great while I'm at the store, spend anywhere between $100-200, and then when I get home and put it all away and somehow it looks just like it did before I went to the store, with one or two additional items.

We always have enough butter, eggs, coffee and creamer, rice, grits, ramen, onions, potatoes, mac&cheese, chef boyardee, etc. I've always put the emphasis on getting pre-packaged food that lasts a long time because it's unlikely I'll be able to go to the grocery store every week, and we eat like we do because with foods like these, it's rare that a single meal will cost more than $2.

My girlfriend and I recently moved across the country and food was the last thing on our minds until suddenly we were both so sick we couldn't leave the house. She was handling it and to her it felt like a mild hangover, but to me it was terrible. It literally felt like I could hear my earwax melting. Eventually figured all the sodium was making us dehydrated, so we chugged water for a while and within 24 hours we felt better, but we realized the way we've been eating for the past 3-5 years isn't really sustainable.

What are some foods that contain a lot of nutrients? I know everyone says eat a lot of fruit and vegetables, but which ones are good? I was on a lettuce kick last year but then I heard there isn't much in lettuce that's good for you. My girlfriend also suggested we should start taking multivitamins because we might not be getting the nutrition we need, but someone on Reddit a couple years back said they might cause cancer so I don't know if that's a good idea. Similarly, when I asked my mom she said tofu is good for you, but I've also heard soy can cause testicular cancer, which I'm not about.

What are some nutritious staples I should always keep on hand, that won't make us sicker in the long run? Not sure if this is relevant but we have the Costco membership!

“Ideal Weight” of 140lbs

I’ve weighed over 160lbs since the age of 15. I gradually put on about 20lbs over the course of high school until I weighed about 183lbs during senior year.

I believe I was 5’6” at the start of high school and 5’8” by the end of it.

I’m 22 now and have managed to get up to almost 200lbs, back down to 185lbs, further down to 170lbs, and then back up to 185lbs again.

Right now I’m at 173lbs and shooting for my first major goal weight of 140lbs. I’m starting to take my weight loss seriously.

As an adult woman, I’ve never fit comfortably into clothing smaller than an XL or a size 12(US) pant.

I’ve already made great strides in terms of my mental health, yknow not tying my worth to a number on the scale etc etc...

BUT I want to achieve a fit and lean body... something I’ve never experienced before. It’s more of a challenge for myself to achieve a goal I always thought was out of reach.

I’d just like some input from fellow ladies with similar heights (5’7/5’8 ideally) who are at my goal weight.... or on a similar journey to me! :)

I know weight loss looks different on everybody because people start at different weights, they lose weight via different methods and obvi everyone has different weight distribution... so that will all be taken into account’

This sub is so much about CICO and I hate it.

I’m all for tracking what you eat. Putting in writing every single thing you put in your body is a huge help for weight loss. And eating something and then entering it into the app and seeing just how many calories are in it is a big eye opener. But weight loss shouldn’t be about adding up calories all day. It should be about making healthier choices.

Tracking calories is stressful! If you use up all the calories you’ve allotted yourself and you find yourself hungry later, then what? You don’t eat? No. That’s unhealthy. If your body is hungry you should feed it. Starving yourself can be detrimental to weight loss, not only because of the likelihood of then bingeing but it messes up your metabolism. The goal is to learn what the right kinds of food you should be eating are.

And exercise is IMPORTANT. I’m not saying you need to go to the gym every day but you should be moving regularly. It’s downplayed a lot around here.

CICO might help you lose the weight but healthy eating and exercise is what keeps it off. And that is what it’s all about.

ISO personal anecdotes with thyroid/weight loss

Hi group! I joined this community with the goal of losing weight and hopefully making some friends along the way. I am 43(F) and figured it would be a good idea to see my general physician before I started to make sure I was in a good place to start dieting. He did an exam and also took blood for a general work up. To my surprise the results came back and my markers for thyroid hormone were super low and he started me on Thyroxine. My question is: has anyone here been in the same spot? Did your medication help you to balance out and start losing weight? If so, did you find it any easier or harder to shed the pounds?

I realize that people on here are not medical professional, but I would like to hear people’s personal experiences. Doctors are great at telling you how everything will work in a perfect world, but we all know that ain’t happenin’!

Small victory from 395lbs to 385.7lbs

Hi all,

I started my journey at r/loseit a week ago. I was desperate and didn’t know where to start. I was 395 lbs and very desperate because nothing seems to work for me. Some of you recommended to make small sustainable adjustments and work from there, that no Personal Trainer was needed . Guess what? You started a revolution with my weight loss journey. It might seem simple advise, but very powerful when you realize what it means.

I was presented with more than 6 or more opportunities to make bad decisions and make wrong food choices and I didn’t fall for any of them. Planning my meals ahead helped me combat these situation with whatever the “treat” was .( sweet, salty or savory) which is usually what I get cravings for!(this will highly depend on your tastes). Anyhow, planning ahead WORKS! if I’m able to do it , anybody who’s determined will accomplish this!

After a week of having a weigh in routine, preparing breakfast, lunch and dinner with portions being controlled and a determination to make good decisions, I finally reached 385.7 lbs on my last weigh in for the week on Friday. I’ve never felt this in control of myself and I really appreciate the encouragement and advise. You all rock!

F**K EATING HEALTHY!

Context: M/20/5’7/152lbs. Lost 70lbs a year ago. Maintained that for about a year. Now deciding to lose the last 10-15lbs because might as well right?

So, 2 weeks in and for the past 2 days I decided, eat healthy..? The whole takeaway flex is making me have to have protein shakes and I’ve been stuck on the same flavour a while and wanted a break.

Here I am eating chicken in the morning, salads, roasted sweet patato, no. Just no. It’s 2:40am and all I want right now is to binge. I’ve never in the past 2 years off my weight loss ever really wanted to throw it in the sh*t and EAT. It’s on my mind the last 2 nights and I CAN’T TAKE IT!

And yes I 100% sound like a kid but damn, can I just say thank GOD for CICO, because tomorrow after gym I’m getting a double spicy burger and having that protein shake on the side and I’m gonna damn well enjoy it.

Thanks for listening to my Ted talk.

Feel free to share any bad foods you have in cico because I literally can’t sleep atm
