Day 1? Starting your weight loss journey on Friday, 23 November 2018? Start here!

Today is your Day 1?

Welcome to r/Loseit!

So you aren’t sure of how to start? Don’t worry! “How do I get started?” is our most asked question. r/Loseit has helped our users lose over 1,000,000 recorded pounds and these are the steps that we’ve found most useful for getting started.

Why you’re overweight

Our bodies are amazing (yes, yours too!). In order to survive before supermarkets, we had to be able to store energy to get us through lean times, we store this energy as adipose fat tissue. If you put more energy into your body than it needs, it stores it, for (potential) later use. When you put in less than it needs, it uses the stored energy. The more energy you have stored, the more overweight you are. The trick is to get your body to use the stored energy, which can only be done if you give it less energy than it needs, consistently.

Before You Start

The very first step is calculating your calorie needs. You can do that HERE. This will give you an approximation of your calorie needs for the day. The next step is to figure how quickly you want to lose the fat. One pound of fat is equal to 3500 calories. So to lose 1 pound of fat per week you will need to consume 500 calories less than your TDEE (daily calorie needs from the link above). 750 calories less will result in 1.5 pounds and 1000 calories is an aggressive 2 pounds per week.

Tracking

Here is where it begins to resemble work. The most efficient way to lose the weight you desire is to track your calorie intake. This has gotten much simpler over the years and today it can be done right from your smartphone or computer. r/loseit recommends an app like MyFitnessPal, Loseit! (unaffiliated), or Cronometer. Create an account and be honest with it about your current stats, activities, and goals. This is your tracker and no one else needs to see it so don’t cheat the numbers. You’ll find large user created databases that make logging and tracking your food and drinks easy with just the tap of the screen or the push of a button. We also highly recommend the use of a digital kitchen scale for accuracy. Knowing how much of what you're eating is more important than what you're eating. Why? This may explain it.

Creating Your Deficit

How do you create a deficit? This is up to you. r/loseit has a few recommendations but ultimately that decision is yours. There is no perfect diet for everyone. There is a perfect diet for you and you can create it. You can eat less of exactly what you eat now. If you like pizza you can have pizza. Have 2 slices instead of 4. You can try lower calorie replacements for calorie dense foods. Some of the communities favorites are cauliflower rice, zucchini noodles, spaghetti squash in place of their more calorie rich cousins. If it appeals to you an entire dietary change like Keto, Paleo, Vegetarian.

The most important thing to remember is that this selection of foods works for you. Sustainability is the key to long term weight management success. If you hate what you’re eating you won’t stick to it.

Exercise

Is NOT mandatory. You can lose fat and create a deficit through diet alone. There is no requirement of exercise to lose weight.

It has it’s own benefits though. You will burn extra calories. Exercise is shown to be beneficial to mental health and creates an endorphin rush as well. It makes people feel awesome and has been linked to higher rates of long term success when physical activity is included in lifestyle changes.

Crawl, Walk, Run

It can seem like one needs to make a 180 degree course correction to find success. That isn’t necessarily true. Many of our users find that creating small initial changes that build a foundation allows them to progress forward in even, sustained, increments.

Acceptance

You will struggle. We have all struggled. This is natural. There is no tip or trick to get through this though. We encourage you to recognize why you are struggling and forgive yourself for whatever reason that may be. If you overindulged at your last meal that is ok. You can resolve to make the next meal better.

Do not let the pursuit of perfect get in the way of progress. We don’t need perfect. We just want better.

Additional resources

Now you’re ready to do this. Here are more details, that may help you refine your plan.

386lbs to 245lbs. After 11 months I have a lot to be thankful for.

Longtime shy lurker. I was weeks away from liver failure, blood pressure was insane, and showing signs of diabetes. Diet, exercise, and therapy were the only things that could right this sinking ship. The “before pic” me didn’t care how close he was to death, but the “after pic” me is posting because he is so thankful and grateful for a second chance. Hoping this motivates someone else that is struggling physically and emotionally and shows them that with commitment and motivation, anything is achievable. I never had a goal weight in mind, I just wanted to look in the mirror and be happy, and today I am happy. My weight loss journey isn’t over, but getting through each day seems easier and I now look forward to things, activities, & social events.

on the post-thanksgiving drive, but slightly more lost

I’ve (17M/5’5/CW120/GW115) been lurking for a while, but I’ve lost about 15 lbs since starting my weight loss journey in July.

Ever since Halloween with its cursed sweets >:( and the Thanksgiving break kicking in, I’ve kind of fallen off the wagon, eating anywhere from 2,500-3,000 calories daily— I don’t think I’ve kept a caloric deficit since the beginning of this month, and I haven’t done any running.

Today’s Thanksgiving. I went back to eating 1500 calories. It was hard in the midst of pumpkin pies and my mother’s signature apple crisp but I guess it’s worth getting back on the train to improve my health and lose some weight. My willpower’s low but I figure that once I start school again it’ll be harder to binge than when I’m always at home.

The thing is, even though I’m close to reaching my GW, I’m still unsatisfied with how I look, especially since I have a lot of fat stored in my thighs and stomach at this point. I know there’s no way to spot reduce the fat or anything of the sort.

I’m kind of at an impasse with what to do next. Should I continue to lose weight beyond my GW and try to cut my BF% before investing in lifting weights?

Gained 30lbs after my 20lb weight loss last year. Someone please save me.

Last year I used a mixture of intermittent fasting, very limited working out, and calorie counting to lose 20lbs from April(158lbs) to August(138lbs). My overall goal is 125lbs, but I’m happy anywhere between 125-135lbs.

This year I hit the highest I’ve EVER been, and I’m honestly struggling. I am 5’5 and just hit 165lbs. These last 15lbs have literally come from September to now.

My tracking is all over the place. I’m kinda in a toxic work place, and my mental health isn’t doing well so I’m eating to cope.

How can I get back to eating only when I’m hungry? How can I fight this before I lose myself forever? My frame shows my weight very obviously and I’m continuously embarrassed of myself.

I don’t drink sodas. I don’t eat fast food (and if I do, it’s a salad and turkey sandwich from Arby’s, never fries). I cut back our pasta intake greatly from four days a week to once or twice a month. I’ve seen no results from that. I have Lose It and My Fitness Pal on my phone. I have a gym membership but haven’t gone recently. It’s hard. My poor dog is crated all day while at work, and then if I go to the gym after work, I’m normally there two hours, so he will only get an hour or two out of the kennel at nights and that isn’t fair. I am going to try to start getting up at 5am to go before work but I am not a morning person whatsoever. I don’t know if I’ll ever turn that into more than just an idea. But I need to.

I hate to beg. But please. Treat me like a new person who has never tried to lose weight before. Help me get myself together and back on track. I’m desperate to make a change. But I’ve let work, school and stress wreck me.

I want to get better at a low carb diet. But I’m a one trick pony when it comes to dinner, and easy doesn’t always mean healthy. I’m on limited time so it’s been hard for me to meal prep. I don’t know my way around healthy foods much either. I hate fancy healthy foods.

So do I just do a bunch of cardio at the gym every morning for an hour? How to get I back to tracking everyday and actually staying under my limits? How do I lose like 5-10lbs pretty quickly, then 20lbs more in a healthy lifestyle change that only promotes this weight loss to stay.

How do I get my body, and my life back?

Thankful for my weight loss, but not for the painful realization where I seriously learn my limits.

Damn.

So, today is Thanksgiving. I traveled 2.5 hours to see my good friend and celebrate with her family, as we both just moved across the country for separate life endeavors and it’s our first holiday away from home, though her fam came out to enjoy Thanksgiving on the west coast.

I’m currently laying on her parents’ Air B&B bed, stuffed to the brim and in an awful amount of pain in my stomach.

I just ate more than I have in months, but still at least 2x less than I would normally eat on Thanksgiving.

Holy shit. After eating some pie, I realized how much pain I was in, and I had to rush to the bathroom and literally vomit. I have never ever in my life experienced that.

I’m now resting and waiting for some of the bloat to go down. I can’t believe how much I used to be able to fit in my stomach. I can’t believe how used to gorging myself I became?!? But it seemed SO normal.

I just needed to process this somewhere. It’s kind of scary! I know this is super excessive language, but it almost feels like I just “overdosed” on food, and my tolerance for it has decreased exponentially since starting to lose weight 4 months ago.

Eat slowly, my friends! Even on holidays! You can’t eat like you used to! Take it from me: don’t bother trying! It’s not a fun indulgence when you’re leaned over porcelain retching into your college friend’s family’s rental toilet. Seriously not worth serving 2 of mashed potato volcanoes.

Woof.

Question about CICO and Intermittent Fasting

Hi all, great group and info.

M/44. 5'10 263 lbs. Been doing Intermittent Fasting and it has been working for me. Have lost about 15 pounds, and been a while since I have been this low. Slow and steady wins the race.

My IM strategy basically amounts to eating once per day and eating whatever, however I want.

The down side...I kind of feel like crap. I get drowsy, my mind is foggy during the day, my one meal is often a pile of fast food. Blah. And also no exercise.

Before this I was very much concentrating on exercise. Weights mostly, but also walking, hiking and some yoga experimentation. I felt mentally and physically on point. However as my diet was not dialed in I was not losing weight (even though I received a ton of compliments about weight loss....improved posture and attitude does wonders).

So, question for you CICO masters. After Thanksgiving I am going to dump IF, very much focus on a slight caloric deficit, and get back to making exercise a primary concern. Is this the path you successful folks have been following? Do you guys and gals not worry about meal timing, amounts, etc.? It really just comes down to that number you take in?

Thanks
