How many day-1s will it take?

To say that I’ve struggled with weight my entire life would be a ie. I’ve consistently lost the battle against obesity my entire life is a more accurate depiction of the truth. Sure I’ve thrown and landed a good punch here and there but only to see my opponent angered and make a come back with revenge. But I remain hopeful that one day I’ll be able to join so many on here who have seen success on their weight loss journey.

But here’s the thing, I still need to figure out what works for me. A journey of a million miles will always you in the same place unless you change something. You just can’t expect a different outcome from doing the same thing. So I continue to search for that “thing” that will push me to a different outcome. But it’s been a disappointing search for the longest time.

This is my life and like so many I’m just tired. But I love life and I love my kids even more. So today, for the countless time, I start my journey again from scratch.

Day-1: 323.6.

Official 100+ pound total weight loss!

Before/after https://imgur.com/a/Dd843DG

Well I never thought I’d be able to ever say it. When I try picking up 100 pounds it blows my mind that I was carrying that much extra around with me at all times. I’m so glad that I’ve set a goal for myself and have almost completely achieved it, it’s a feeling I never thought I’d feel, and everything leading up to this has been totally worth it.

How did I do it?

Well to start I did the easiest thing I could think of, cut out fast/fried foods, soda, excessive sugar and too many carbs. Drinking water was never something I enjoyed until I began my weight loss, now I drink upwards of 3 litres every single day which has helped tremendously. I started eating lean proteins, healthy fats and a reasonable amount of carbs, cut down heavily on sugar and kept going from there. Don’t get me wrong I enjoy pizza and fast food from time to time but moderation is key.

The second thing I did is found a form of exercise I could enjoy that didn’t feel like a chore, that for me was riding my bicycle. I purchased a new bike and started going for 5k bike rides when I could, then 10k, 15k and even up to 30km as it got easier. I now bike to work and home aswell because anything helps. I started going to the gym and doing very basic routine workouts and cardio which I still continue to this day.

INTERMITTENT FASTING!!! I began IF and my results started getting crazy, I do the standard 16-8 ( eat all my calories in an 8 hour window) and haven’t looked back since, it is very difficult to begin doing this at first but if you can do this in a healthy way I highly recommend it.

Edit- how could I forget my fitness pal. I track absolutely everything I eat. EVERYTHING. It’s kind of a pain at first but once you do it so many times it just becomes part of your routine! I feel like this is key to kicking off your weight loss.

I hope this helps people who are starting their weight loss journey and I wouldn’t mind sharing my experience and helping anyone that might have any questions!

It starts now

Hi, I'm new here and I'm not entirely sure what to say; I've told myself dozens of times: "it starts now," but I'm hoping that putting the record here will light a fire under my ass. I'm so impressed and even proud of everyone here for their progress and courage to share their stories; I hope that I gain some of that confidence too. I've always been a big guy and I've only had one period of real weight loss where I went from 300 pounds to about 250. Now, I'm 275 and terrified of reaching that ceiling. I've been spending time in the Florida sun playing tennis and frisbee and trying to be active about 3 days a week. Thank you all for sharing your stories and creating such a safe, welcoming community. I look forward to your kindness and support--it starts now!

Customizing a cardio plan to work in your favor

Figuring out how much cardio you need, how hard you should be working, and which cardio exercises are best can be a real challenge when you don’t have the right tools or information. While many people are pretty clear about their exercise goals, it can be pretty easy to fall into a cardio routine that isn’t as beneficial as we may have originally hoped for.

Lipedema - Are there any professional athletes with Lipedema?

Over the last year I have been working out with a girl. We are running 3 times a week and do very light weight workouts, in addition do a healthy diet. Personally, I'm happy with my progress but her body only changed a little. She does look much fitter but arms and legs didn't get slimmer at all.

Now, her doctor told her she may have "Lipedema" in a very early stage. If this was true she would never be able to lose fat on her arms and legs. Of course she is upset now and even at the point of quitting. All the successful weight loss stories we have motivated ourselves with apparently don't apply anymore with Lipedema.

I would like to motivate her again, however there aren't many successful "transformation stories" with this disorder. Actually I can't find any examples of people who got extremely fit despite of having Lipedema. Most often I read that exercise and calorie restriction was ineffective and the only solution was surgery to remove the "infected" fat tissues. This is very discouraging.

Maybe you can point me to successful stories or even name some (professional) athletes with Lipedema who could serve as rolemodel and motivate her to continue exercising.

Thank you!

Weight loss has totally stopped after fasting?

Over the past year I had lost a pretty decent amount of weight. I went from 188lb to 165lb at a steady rate, eating 1800 cals but with no significant exercise. I then fasted for 29 days in Ramadan, paying no attention to my diet as I wanted to ensure I was eating enough to energize myself for my exams in that same period. I came out of Ramadan at 166lb, one pound heavier. After this, I decided to limit my calories to 1700. I lost that extra pound in 3 days. Since then, my weight fluctuated around 165lb for the past two weeks, despite the lowered calorie intake, and 3x330 calorie runs per week.

Gift ideas for 25 years of weight maintenance?

I am in a weight loss support group (TOPS - Take Off Pounds Sensibly), and one of our members is celebrating 25 years at her goal weight (KOPS - Keep Off Pounds Sensibly). She continues to come to meetings weekly and supports everyone with great kindness. She is a wonderful role model for the group and overall just a lovely person. I'd like to get her a gift between $20 - $50. I don't know her that well, so it doesn't have to be overly personal, but I'd rather it not be flowers.

Any ideas? She is a lady maybe in her late 60's, retired but very active, lives in the suburbs of a major metro area.
