Let’s talk about metabolism.

Alrighty. So we’re all familiar with BMRs (basal metabolic rate) and TDEEs (Total Daily energy expidenture). We’re aware that things like NEAT (non exercise activity thermogenesis) and TEF (thermic effect of food) and other variables that affect our metabolisms. The number of calories we burn at our current body and weight are super important for figuring out a calorie deficit at which we can lose weight.

I have a few questions about metabolism.

I know that it slows down the more weight you lose (because it takes less calories to run a smaller body). I know that muscle apparently also adds to your metabolism, but from the research i’ve seen, it only adds a couple extra calories out? From a weight loss perspective, is it extremely necessary?

Also, is it possible that staying in a deficit for a consistent period of time slows down your metabolism? If so, by how much? is it enough to stall or slow down your weight loss (besides the fact that lost weight = less CO)?

Are there really such things as faster / slower metabolisms? How much do they vary by?

How much does exercise really add to our calories out (since machines and watches overestimate). As long as weight loss is possible from a calorie deficit, is it necessary to exercise (aside from the obvious health/fitness benefits)?

And lastly, metabolic recovery. Say you have been suffering from an ED for a while, does your metabolism suffer, and by how much? How does metabolism “repair” overtime?

I’ve seen a lot of varying information about metabolism and how if we stay at too much of a low deficit it will damage it: what exactly is this damage?

Answers to any of the above, if not all, would be much appreciated. I’ve been eating at a deficit to lose a pound per week for the past 5 months, I have lost 20lbs and have roughly 10 more pounds to lose until my goal weight. weight loss has slowed for me but i’m at the lowest possible calorie deficit i can be at that can be healthy for me. i wanted to know about metabolism as i haven’t seen a solid list of information about it.

Diet ice cream

I am on a 1200 calorie diet, which is going pretty successfully. Frequently (every other day) I will eat an entire pint of a 220-300 calorie diet ice cream as a snack. I make sure it stays under my calorie limit, and I am still able to fit in a good sized breakfast, lunch and dinner around it.

I am worried that despite the low calories, the ice cream might still affect my weight loss? I only recently started doing this, so nothing really has happened yet, but I have read from a few sources that it isn’t a good idea to eat the whole thing? I am 17, and I don’t know much about dieting, so I am confused when I see things like this because I figured as long as I stay under 1200 calories I am fine, and I really enjoy my ice cream.

TLDR: Is it okay to eat entire pints of diet ice cream as long as you stay under your calorie limit? Why do some people warn against this?

Lost 110 through Keto hitting a Platesu

Hello reddit, This year I decided to make a better me after seeing myself weighing over four hundred pounds this past january. I went through a 1200 calorie Keto based diet with a 22 net carb edge, and have officially lost 112 pounds through this method and light exercise. After only losing 5 pounds this last month, I feel that I have reached a plateau in my weight loss, and am looking for a healthy workout routine to facilitate further weight loss. I was once a wrestler, but everytime I have worked out since I have injured myself by going "too hard" and am looking for a good general regime to help me be the best me I can. TL;DR Lost weight through diet, looking for a good workout plan to lose more weight.

Healthy eating plan for a student

Hi all,

I am going into my second year of university and I will be cooking for myself for the first time. As someone who is very serious about weight loss, I am super excited to have complete control over my meals. But I am not sure how to best approach this. I will have access to your standard kitchen (microwave, stove top, oven, etc.) and I am thinking that I may try to do things like meal prep and really double down on proper calorie counting and stuff. So if anyone has any experience with this and knows some cheap and healthy recipes they would like to share, I would be in your debt. Thanks in advance for any and all responses!

F20 - Need some accountability

Hi guys, hopefully this is an appropriate post (brand new account because I don’t feel comfortable talking about this sort of thing on my main) but I am looking for some support and accountability in my fitness/weight loss journey.

A bit about me, I am a psychology student who is currently taking a year out of studying to work. I am not and have never been overweight (5”3 and around 135) but have struggled with self hatred, anxiety and depression (not so much anymore but certainly in the past) and eating issues my whole teenage life.

I currently have a wonderful partner who is in great shape, and over lockdown he helped me to start a fitness journey with an aim to lose some fat and gain muscle. Initially I was making a lot of progress and was genuinely really happy with how I was looking and feeling - I worked out hard every day and even started to count calories (with some slip ups involving being overly restrictive but eventually finding a good deficit which worked for me).

However this past few weeks I have been living at home again and as lockdown restrictions have been eased, I have very little motivation to workout and keep up my previous routine as I prefer to go and see friends or have been tired from working.

I am starting to see myself slip into a really unpleasant cycle where I eat within my calorie goal and exercise for a few days, then have a day where I considerably overeat to the point of it being almost compulsive, far beyond me actually being hungry and ending up feeling so full it hurts/I feel sick. I can see how unhealthy this is even while it is happening and I always feel devastated and guilty after and vow to do better next time, but I feel powerless to break this cycle. I’m scared that I am on the path to binge eating disorder/binging and purging as I have felt a really strong urge to make myself sick after the last few bouts of overeating (especially worrying as I have a history of disordered eating).

I have definitely put back on a few pounds and lost some of the definition in my stomach and legs (although I don’t weigh myself as I find it very triggering) but I am mainly unhappy about the mental change and the decline in my self image. I really want to get back to where I was a few months ago, when my relationship with food, exercise and my body was so much better.

I know exactly what to do to lose weight and tone up as I have done it before, I love cooking and can make plenty of healthy low calorie meals and I even joined a new gym which I intend to start going to on Monday (they opened today but I was concerned with how busy it would be) but somehow I keep slipping up. I’m just desperate for any support, advice or accountability from this sub because I want to do better and stop this unhealthy cycle before it gets any worse.

I'm starting my weight loss journey. 22F/5'2"/70kg

I'm not sure if this is the right sub for this but here goes nothing. I've tried to do this for so long but for some reason always fail to do it. Announcing to the world (albeit anonymously) is exactly what I need. I've had a lot of health issues so I'm going to try intermittent fasting to tackle my weight and health problems. I'm turning 23 in October and want to reach my goals by then. I want to lose a minimum of 10 kgs. I'm going to combine IF with light exercise at home and a bit of walking. I have a bad habit of eating too much junk food. Any tips on how to battle midnight cravings(I can't eat during the fasting period but get super hungry and eat some chips)?

Too Fast.. Worried

Hi All,

Thanks to all your posts, I’ve finally gotten my crap together and began my weight loss journey. In 8 weeks I’m 20lbs down from 201lbs to 181lbs. I weigh myself morning and night and only eat one meal per day eating until I’m full.

I run 5k 4 times per week and use resistance bands for strength training.

I’m just worried if this weight loss is too fast! Should I count my calories and raise them if need be? I want this to be permanent and feel loosing fat too fast will cause me to gain the weight back when I’m eventually maintaining at 150lbs.

Is this actual fat loss or am I loosing muscle mass as well? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
