A woman who helped me up 2 months ago when I (F17) fell on a run noticed my weight loss

I went on a run in September and I’m the clumsiest person ever and happened to fall because it had been raining. The loveliest women helped me up and asked about my goals and why I was running in miserable English weather. I told her I was trying to lose weight and after I got my breath back we said our goodbyes.

Today, I went for a run and I saw the same woman after I had finished and she was shocked to see how much weight I lost. I felt like bursting into tears because I’ve had such a horrible week in relation to others not recognising my weight loss. (see my page for more context if you want). It’s just the best feeling when people recognise your efforts! Keep at it everyone, it will pay off!!

Why You Struggle to Lose Weight

*Ovaries required (lmao)

A lot of women who struggle with weight loss are suffering from a condition called Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS). I wanted to mention it here for any other women who may be suffering from this and may not know.

First, PCOS is REALLY common. About 20% of the female population has PCOS. It's not talked about often, though, because there isn't much that doctors know about it. There is no cure either. In short, PCOS is a condition where women produce more male hormones than what is normal that causes a hormonal imbalance. This causes cysts to appear in the ovaries which delays matured eggs from being released each month during the menstrual cycle. Often, the condition is genetic.

Symptoms of PCOS (Most people display only two or three symptoms but not all)

  • Irregular Menstrual Cycle (everyone with PCOS experiences this)
  • Difficulty to lose weight/weight gain/rapid weight changes
  • Severe acne
  • Hair thinning on the head
  • Facial hair
  • Lots of body hair
  • Difficulty getting pregnant
  • Severe mood swings
  • Constant fatigue

I found out that I had PCOS when I was about 16 or so. I completely changed my lifestyle after I found out I had it. My lifestyle goal wasn't to lose weight but rather to get the PCOS under control. Now at 19, I'm at my ideal weight. I won't go into much detail about how it was for me but the main thing I want to say is that the lifestyle/diet for women on PCOS can be different to what an average person might use for weight loss.

If you think you have PCOS from the symptom list, do some research on what you're experiencing and how you can possibly bring those symptoms under control. I can't give any specific advice because having PCOS can be drastically different for every woman. Which is exactly why there is no cure for it and why even doctors have barely any knowledge themselves.

If you are planning to go to a doctor to get tested for PCOS, be very specific on exactly what you want to get tested for.

Different women can experience different degrees of PCOS. While drastic weight changes was a symptom for me, my severe acne was a million times harder to deal with. My friend, on the other hand, found it practically impossible to lose weight and she suffered from constant fatigue too. Her journey to get PCOS under control was harder than mine was (as in, it took longer for her).

I just thought I'd make this post in case there's anyone out there who is trying hard to lose weight but is struggling. There's an amazing community online that women have created to help each other get through PCOS whether that's Instagram or elsewhere.

Good luck <3

Day 1? Starting your weight loss journey on Saturday, 21 November 2020? Start here!

Today is your Day 1?

Welcome to r/Loseit!

So you aren’t sure of how to start? Don’t worry! “How do I get started?” is our most asked question. r/Loseit has helped our users lose over 1,000,000 recorded pounds and these are the steps that we’ve found most useful for getting started.

Why you’re overweight

Our bodies are amazing (yes, yours too!). In order to survive before supermarkets, we had to be able to store energy to get us through lean times, we store this energy as adipose fat tissue. If you put more energy into your body than it needs, it stores it, for (potential) later use. When you put in less than it needs, it uses the stored energy. The more energy you have stored, the more overweight you are. The trick is to get your body to use the stored energy, which can only be done if you give it less energy than it needs, consistently.

Before You Start

The very first step is calculating your calorie needs. You can do that HERE. This will give you an approximation of your calorie needs for the day. The next step is to figure how quickly you want to lose the fat. One pound of fat is equal to 3500 calories. So to lose 1 pound of fat per week you will need to consume 500 calories less than your TDEE (daily calorie needs from the link above). 750 calories less will result in 1.5 pounds and 1000 calories is an aggressive 2 pounds per week.

Tracking

Here is where it begins to resemble work. The most efficient way to lose the weight you desire is to track your calorie intake. This has gotten much simpler over the years and today it can be done right from your smartphone or computer. r/loseit recommends an app like MyFitnessPal, Loseit! (unaffiliated), or Cronometer. Create an account and be honest with it about your current stats, activities, and goals. This is your tracker and no one else needs to see it so don’t cheat the numbers. You’ll find large user created databases that make logging and tracking your food and drinks easy with just the tap of the screen or the push of a button. We also highly recommend the use of a digital kitchen scale for accuracy. Knowing how much of what you're eating is more important than what you're eating. Why? This may explain it.

Creating Your Deficit

How do you create a deficit? This is up to you. r/loseit has a few recommendations but ultimately that decision is yours. There is no perfect diet for everyone. There is a perfect diet for you and you can create it. You can eat less of exactly what you eat now. If you like pizza you can have pizza. Have 2 slices instead of 4. You can try lower calorie replacements for calorie dense foods. Some of the communities favorites are cauliflower rice, zucchini noodles, spaghetti squash in place of their more calorie rich cousins. If it appeals to you an entire dietary change like Keto, Paleo, Vegetarian.

The most important thing to remember is that this selection of foods works for you. Sustainability is the key to long term weight management success. If you hate what you’re eating you won’t stick to it.

Exercise

Is NOT mandatory. You can lose fat and create a deficit through diet alone. There is no requirement of exercise to lose weight.

It has it’s own benefits though. You will burn extra calories. Exercise is shown to be beneficial to mental health and creates an endorphin rush as well. It makes people feel awesome and has been linked to higher rates of long term success when physical activity is included in lifestyle changes.

Crawl, Walk, Run

It can seem like one needs to make a 180 degree course correction to find success. That isn’t necessarily true. Many of our users find that creating small initial changes that build a foundation allows them to progress forward in even, sustained, increments.

Acceptance

You will struggle. We have all struggled. This is natural. There is no tip or trick to get through this though. We encourage you to recognize why you are struggling and forgive yourself for whatever reason that may be. If you overindulged at your last meal that is ok. You can resolve to make the next meal better.

Do not let the pursuit of perfect get in the way of progress. We don’t need perfect. We just want better.

Additional resources

Now you’re ready to do this. Here are more details, that may help you refine your plan.

NSV- I can zip my regular width boots! F/33 SW: 178 lbs CW:150 lbs

I’ve been on my weight loss journey for two years now. I struggled with losing weight in the beginning even though I was working out daily, tracking calories, and seeing a dietitian to help me with my habits. Every time I lost a pound I would gain it back within a week. It was devastating. Took a toll on me mentally that no matter what I did my weight was still in the same range 173-178 lbs. Last year I had to go shopping for wide-calf boots because my regular width boots won’t zip up. My calves were muscular from all the treadmill inclines I was putting them through but all I could think of they were fat. I hated them. I kept my old boots in my closet hoping that some day they’ll fit. Well since COVID hit, I started IF (OMAD) and did more cardio days than weight training. It seems that worked for my body and I started losing weight and keeping it off! -28 lbs in 8 months. This morning I decided to try my regular width boots and see if I could zip them all the way, and I did! They probably need an inch more of room to be more comfortable but I can zip then up! Small victories like these help me keep going. Looking forward to the next one!

Superfood Saturday: Cranberries

Tart and tangy, this fruit stands out from the crowd for its versatility, numerous health benefits, and long recorded history. While cranberries are one of the few fruits native to North America, they play an impressive part in the history books, having been featured on the menu for the first Thanksgiving. And today, cranberries are a staple at every Thanksgiving table with more than 80 million pounds being used for this holiday alone—albeit in both fresh and canned forms.

The cranberry was part of the Native American diet before the settlers arrived and it remains a popular food till this day. Cranberries got their name from the German and Dutch settlers who thought the plants looked like the neck and head of a Crane bird and therefore called them ‘crane berries.’ Cranberries are considered superfoods no doubt due to their phytonutrient content. Science suggests that phytonutrients provide antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer benefits. In addition, cranberries are fat-, sodium- and cholesterol-free, plus they’re rich in vitamin C and fiber.

A common misconception about cranberries is that they are grown in water. Instead, water is added at harvest time during the fall season to aid in their removal. Cranberries are grown all over the country, but a majority (about 60 percent) are grown in Wisconsin. You can store this fruit in the fridge for up to two months or freeze for even longer. When purchasing, you should choose firm, bright red berries and avoid the shriveled ones.

There are many different ways to enjoy cranberries, whether it be in cranberry sauce, dried and sprinkled over a salad, in cranberry juice, or as a festive decoration at your holiday feasts. Need some culinary inspiration for your next cranberry craving? Give one of these delicious dishes a try:

Quick question on laxative teas

Is it safe to drink it like after a night of pigging out and drinking alcohol? Or every other day of some sort since I have a slight constipation as well

Because I do if like I need to debloat myself or keep the water weight after a night of drinking and eating out with friends. But I don’t drink laxative tea if I’m just staying home and focused on maintaining my weight.

I’ve changed my plans now since I’m done losing weight but I must admit that maintaining is way harder than losing. Though I’m less stricter on my meals now, and going out again... less exercise compared before but still watching my calorie intake.

I’ve tried some ways to make my digestion better but normally I poop every 3 days... so before reaching the 3rd day of not pooping, I drink laxative the night before. (Suggestions and recommendations are highly appreciated on this one)

Don’t worry, I don’t believe the magic of weight loss in this kind of stuff since that’s how people are promoting it to brainwash others who want to lose weight. I just really drink it because of the reasons said earlier

Below 95 FOR GOOD!

15 days ago I wrote that I was below 100 kg for good, and now I think that I will not get above 95 kg anymore.

Weight loss has gone pretty rapidly after my relationship ended. I just had no hunger and plenty of motivation to be active every day.

Fortunately, my appetite is returning, because I don't want to lose weight too rapidly.

However, I do like that I have lost my first 10 kgs in a short time, and because of the result I don't look and feel fat anymore. As long as this is temporary I don't think it hurts me, but I don't want to lose like this any longer.

But I will keep losing weight, in a healthy way, by creating a sustainable healthy lifestyle. Hoping to reach 80 kgs before spring, but weight is just one number, becoming more strong and healthy over time so that I can be more free to do the activities I like and look good is the real goal.
