What are some of the lesser known NSD (Non Scale Defeats!)

For those more motivated by what could go wrong vs what could go right, what are some of the lesser known (or talked about) consequences of weight gain?

Normally I can get motivated by looking forward at what I can expect if I keep on my weight loss journey, and I've seen a lot of great NSV's on here, but sometimes when that motivation drops a nice dose of the bad stuff can do the trick too!

Finding it difficult to lose weight without processed foods

Hello! I’ve been on my weight loss journey since September and almost 30 lbs down. After reflecting on my journey so far, I attribute a lot of my success to eating primarily processed foods (the reasoning behind this was to be able to easily count my calories, although calorie counts do have fall within a margin of error).

I’m starting to realize that with this weight loss journey, I want to change my relationship with food and eat healthily without so much reliance on processed foods.

The issue is, I don’t know where to start or even how to do so while making sure that I’m accurately counting my calories. I want to start eating healthier and more whole foods but I’m scared, nervous, and don’t know where to start.

I know this may seem silly to some, but I am really lost and feel like I can’t lose weight without having processed foods. Where do I even get calorie counts for whole foods? How do I keep track of everything? How do people eat just home cooked meals? There are so many questions and uncertainties that I have. I want to be able to feel this freedom with food, instead of feeling as though I’m only limited to just the freezer aisle and packaged, processed foods.

Love working out but still no changes

I started my weight loss journey in January. At first it was slow but I saw some changes, I lost 8 pounds in 4 months. But then I stopped taking hormonal anticonception. I feel I am more fit and stronger at the gym but on my body there is no results. And I am sure I eat less then before. But my weight is still the same. I read a lot of articles about women weight gain after stop using hormonal anticonception. Can it be the problem why my weight doesn't change?

Weight loss slowing down?

Hello, so I’ve been losing around 9lb/month(2.25lb/week) and have been feeling healthy and good doing so.

Today, I weighed myself and feel so gutted. This has been a harsh month because I’ve had 2 occasions- Anniversary and family members birthday, both of which I counted calories for.

I may have gone over by around 500 calories for each. Only thing is that would be less than a lb difference in honesty. I’ve also walked 2000 steps extra avg per day this month compared to last.

So why have I only dropped Just under 5lb and not say 7-8lb? My eating habits haven’t changed, I have drunk more cans of Pepsi max this month though. Should I lower my calories from 2200 to 2000(I’m 6’1,sedentary)? Thanks!

Gym Routine Questions: Please Help!

Hey there, I'm 23F 5'2 and 77kgs

I've recently begun working out at the gym and had an instructor draft up a routine for me. I'm combining my weight loss journey with a healthy meal plan consisting of 1200cal or less, regular work outs and keeping my cardio up with a fairly active job as well as usually topping 10k steps each day.

The instructor gave me a "full body workout routine" but I'm confused because the routine seems to be mostly arms and leg workouts and I'm quite heavy and pudgy in the mid-section and back. My legs are probably the most toned part of my body, and they're tiny in proportionate to my heavier frame (I'm so gross to look at..) I'm really concerned that I'm going to push myself and not receive the results I'm so desperate for. It just seems as though the parts I'm currently working on aren't the parts I'd LIKE to work on.

I really like the instructor and she's really nice, but I wanted to be a coward and ask the internet what I should be doing and if she had me on the right path. I'm just so disheartened that I'm never going to get anywhere near the body I'm striving for. I'd really like to have seen some progress before the start of next year. I just really want to look at myself and not have to stifle back a cry of repulsion or defeat.

So you aren’t sure of how to start? Don’t worry! “How do I get started?” is our most asked question. r/Loseit has helped our users lose over 1,000,000 recorded pounds and these are the steps that we’ve found most useful for getting started.

Why you’re overweight

Our bodies are amazing (yes, yours too!). In order to survive before supermarkets, we had to be able to store energy to get us through lean times, we store this energy as adipose fat tissue. If you put more energy into your body than it needs, it stores it, for (potential) later use. When you put in less than it needs, it uses the stored energy. The more energy you have stored, the more overweight you are. The trick is to get your body to use the stored energy, which can only be done if you give it less energy than it needs, consistently.

Before You Start

The very first step is calculating your calorie needs. You can do that HERE. This will give you an approximation of your calorie needs for the day. The next step is to figure how quickly you want to lose the fat. One pound of fat is equal to 3500 calories. So to lose 1 pound of fat per week you will need to consume 500 calories less than your TDEE (daily calorie needs from the link above). 750 calories less will result in 1.5 pounds and 1000 calories is an aggressive 2 pounds per week.

Tracking

Here is where it begins to resemble work. The most efficient way to lose the weight you desire is to track your calorie intake. This has gotten much simpler over the years and today it can be done right from your smartphone or computer. r/loseit recommends an app like MyFitnessPal, Loseit! (unaffiliated), or Cronometer. Create an account and be honest with it about your current stats, activities, and goals. This is your tracker and no one else needs to see it so don’t cheat the numbers. You’ll find large user created databases that make logging and tracking your food and drinks easy with just the tap of the screen or the push of a button. We also highly recommend the use of a digital kitchen scale for accuracy. Knowing how much of what you're eating is more important than what you're eating. Why? This may explain it.

Creating Your Deficit

How do you create a deficit? This is up to you. r/loseit has a few recommendations but ultimately that decision is yours. There is no perfect diet for everyone. There is a perfect diet for you and you can create it. You can eat less of exactly what you eat now. If you like pizza you can have pizza. Have 2 slices instead of 4. You can try lower calorie replacements for calorie dense foods. Some of the communities favorites are cauliflower rice, zucchini noodles, spaghetti squash in place of their more calorie rich cousins. If it appeals to you an entire dietary change like Keto, Paleo, Vegetarian.

The most important thing to remember is that this selection of foods works for you. Sustainability is the key to long term weight management success. If you hate what you’re eating you won’t stick to it.

Exercise

Is NOT mandatory. You can lose fat and create a deficit through diet alone. There is no requirement of exercise to lose weight.

It has it’s own benefits though. You will burn extra calories. Exercise is shown to be beneficial to mental health and creates an endorphin rush as well. It makes people feel *awesome* and has been linked to higher rates of long term success when physical activity is included in lifestyle changes.

Crawl, Walk, Run

It can seem like one needs to make a 180 degree course correction to find success. That isn’t necessarily true. Many of our users find that creating small initial changes that build a foundation allows them to progress forward in even, sustained, increments.

Acceptance

You will struggle. We have all struggled. This is natural. There is no tip or trick to get through this though. We encourage you to recognize why you are struggling and forgive yourself for whatever reason that may be. If you overindulged at your last meal that is ok. You can resolve to make the next meal better.

Do not let the pursuit of perfect get in the way of progress. We don’t need perfect. We just want better.

Weight Loss Causing Heavier Period?

I feel like I know the answer is yes since weight/fat and hormones are so intrinsically linked, but I can’t find anything more definitive online (every time I try to search this topic I just come up with articles about being underweight or losing too much weight can make you lose your period!)

I’ve lost 37 lbs since June (gone down 7 BMI points!) (probably had lost another 6ish lbs before that but I wasn’t being super dedicated yet) and my period has gotten WACK. I still have about 50 lbs to lose to get to a healthy BMI, so I hope it can adjust and chill out a little lol.

After I had my second child almost 4 years ago, my period got SUPER regular which had been amazing. Then during this current weight loss “journey” for the last couple months my period has had a day that was so unbelievably heavy for me I was in shock. Like using ultra sized tampons which I’ve never bought in my life WITH a pad and having to change it every 1-2 hours for about half a day! … My last period came a week early and just … won’t stop with the intermittent bleeding. Generally, I still FEEL ok (actually feel great from the weight loss!) Have some cramps while period is heavy but nothing too severe. I’ve just never had very heavy periods (even as a teen when I was thin and then I was on birth control for a long time then had kids and now don’t take anything for birth control now - I had a bilateral salpingectomy during my c-section 4 years ago!)

It’s only been recently, so it’s gotta be weight loss related, I’m guessing. I’m just shy of 37 so I don’t think it’s peri-menopause just yet, haha!

My weight loss has been from intermittent fasting / OMAD (+ snack) most days in order to keep at a caloric deficit. I have used an ephedrine/caffeine stack some days to help suppress appetite at times (but not 3x a day like body builders - just as needed once in the early afternoon to fight the hungries and not every day.)

Anyone else had an irregular / heavy period explosion after / during weight loss?
