"Big and Tall" shop worker asked me if I was shopping for myself today (Big Win)

Over the past year and a half I've (M 24) lost over 100ibs (340 > 225). Despite what the scale says and what people around me tell me, I can't seem to stop perceiving myself as my 340 ibs self. Today I walked into the Big and Tall store I always buy my shirts from and when I walked in a worker asked if I was shopping for myself. I said yes and she said they probably wouldn't have anything that fit me (meaning everything would be too big).

Obviously your friends and family are going to tell you you look great when you're on your weight loss journey so you, or at least I, just accept it as basic courtesy because that's what friends do. I think what that lady said to me really hit because someone I've never met before didn't see me as a "big" dude. Definitely was an awesome feeling!

Weight Loss Update

Since I’ve been home from college I’ve been working out twice a day regularly while eating great -fruits, veggies and chicken- hoping to lose about 20-25 pounds by the time I have to return back to school. I’ve been a bystander on this subreddit since May and I’ve posted questions here and there but I’m here to give an update on my progress!

When I returned home from school in May I weighed in at 251 pounds. Today I stepped on the scale and saw the numbers 229.6. I couldn’t believe it! I’ve lost 22 pounds since the middle part of May! I’m so proud of myself for seeing those numbers. I’m the lightest I’ve been since high school. I’m in the best shape physically since high school. I’ve updated my goal to get to 220 before I go back, which is about 4 weeks.

I’ll update again here in a few weeks!

40lbs in 90s days. Choo choo!

I just wanted to make a celebratory post about being down 40 lbs in 90 days. Im 6 foot, male.

Gone from 465 to 425. My goal is around 200.

What am I doing? Just counting calories using myfitnesspal.

Planning to start doing more physical activity once I get down closer to 350, but that's more for plain cardiovascular health than weight loss.

Question to the reader: Is anyone else losing weight so they can live long enough to "live forever". Personally Im hoping we develop mind uploading tech this century and it would be a damn shame to die from something as preventable as obesity just a few decades before we can upload our minds.

Gf saw my stretch marks for the first time today.

I have stretch marks on my arms, hips, boobs, and thighs. They have been there since I've been borderline obese 3 years ago; now that I've lost a solid amount of weight they're of course still there. My girlfriend had never noticed them. But today she did, and pointed them out.

I can hardly be mad at her. They're there, she wasn't judgmental about them, she just noticed. I explained to her where they came from and that they're not going to go away. She said they "look like tiger stripes" and I knew she found that phrase on some misguided Tumblr post. When I started crying, she did not understand.

My stretch marks aren't "tiger stripes" or "lightning bolts" or anything of the like. They're there because I gained too much weight too quickly while falling into depression at age 15. They're there and they're never going to heal. They will forever remind me of how bad a job I once did at taking care of myself. They will always flag me down as someone who once lost control. They aren't pretty, they aren't a sign of beauty at all. Call me vain for hating them, I probably deserve it. But for the life of me I wish I had not done this to myself throughout my teenage years, and I wish I did not now have to spend my adolescence trying so hard to undo years of disordered eating. I wish I did not have stretch marks.

I explained all that to my girlfriend. I think she understands. She's been nothing but supportive throughout my weight loss journey; I love her even more for it. I know she wanted to say something nice, to let me know she loves me with my stretch marks. But desperately trying to see beauty where there is none is simply futile.

Fun Question: What’s the most awkward thing someone has said to you when discussing your weight loss?

Ok so I’m 5 foot 5 and starting out was about 175 pounds (12 and a half stone, or about 78kg, female, 29).

I’ve lost about a stone so far (14 pounds, 6.3 kg), which isn’t that much but it’s a start.

My dad, who knows I’m trying to lose weight, put his foot in it so thoroughly yesterday.

Dad: “it’s funny, your face has really started to change! You can really see it.”

Me: (uncomfortable and awkward, makes lame joke): “I’m going to be really pretty soon.”

Dad: “Yeah, just like the old days”.

Good. Lord.

I mean, I think what he was trying to say was that I was starting to look like the slimmer version of myself, before injuries and mental health took up residence on my hips and stomach, but it did not compute. He was mortified and backed out the room very quickly.

Love yourself like Lizzo

I'm sure that everyone here knows that the right mental attitude is one of the fundamental building blocks to any substantial change that you want to make in your life, both on and off the scales. It's tough to keep going with something that can be draining both physically and mentally, so you have to have the right motivation and drive to keep heading towards whatever goal you have.

I was listening to Lizzo's album earlier (specifically Soulmate, which you should definitely check out) and she gave me a renewed perspective for my current weight loss journey. Yes, it's very important for me to shift a few pounds and become fitter - I don't want to forever be breathless when taking my daily walk uphill - but I have to love myself for who I am now. The girl who I'll be when I have lost a few dozen pounds will have more than enough love and pride for every version of herself for having reached her goals.

I am my own soulmate, because I believe that no-one else is as capable to have as much love for myself other than me.

So when I look at myself in the mirror now, I don't see two separate versions of myself anymore - meaning the woman who I am and the woman who I am going to be. I see myself as I am now with all of my unique qualities, just with a bit of extra padding that I know will shift eventually. It's more important to lose the unhealthy mindset when it comes to self esteem than losing the weight itself, because losing the extra chub will be a byproduct of your newfound happiness.

There are still days where I feel down, but I'll be damned if every other day I'm not looking into the mirror and saying, "damn, she's cute as hell!"

Thanks Lizzo. I'll be walking around today with extra pep in my step because my badass self is only going to get better from today.
