Day 1? Starting your weight loss journey on Thursday, 25 February 2021? Start here!

Today is your Day 1?

Welcome to r/Loseit!

So you aren’t sure of how to start? Don’t worry! “How do I get started?” is our most asked question. r/Loseit has helped our users lose over 1,000,000 recorded pounds and these are the steps that we’ve found most useful for getting started.

Why you’re overweight

Our bodies are amazing (yes, yours too!). In order to survive before supermarkets, we had to be able to store energy to get us through lean times, we store this energy as adipose fat tissue. If you put more energy into your body than it needs, it stores it, for (potential) later use. When you put in less than it needs, it uses the stored energy. The more energy you have stored, the more overweight you are. The trick is to get your body to use the stored energy, which can only be done if you give it less energy than it needs, consistently.

Before You Start

The very first step is calculating your calorie needs. You can do that HERE. This will give you an approximation of your calorie needs for the day. The next step is to figure how quickly you want to lose the fat. One pound of fat is equal to 3500 calories. So to lose 1 pound of fat per week you will need to consume 500 calories less than your TDEE (daily calorie needs from the link above). 750 calories less will result in 1.5 pounds and 1000 calories is an aggressive 2 pounds per week.

Tracking

Here is where it begins to resemble work. The most efficient way to lose the weight you desire is to track your calorie intake. This has gotten much simpler over the years and today it can be done right from your smartphone or computer. r/loseit recommends an app like MyFitnessPal, Loseit! (unaffiliated), or Cronometer. Create an account and be honest with it about your current stats, activities, and goals. This is your tracker and no one else needs to see it so don’t cheat the numbers. You’ll find large user created databases that make logging and tracking your food and drinks easy with just the tap of the screen or the push of a button. We also highly recommend the use of a digital kitchen scale for accuracy. Knowing how much of what you're eating is more important than what you're eating. Why? This may explain it.

Creating Your Deficit

How do you create a deficit? This is up to you. r/loseit has a few recommendations but ultimately that decision is yours. There is no perfect diet for everyone. There is a perfect diet for you and you can create it. You can eat less of exactly what you eat now. If you like pizza you can have pizza. Have 2 slices instead of 4. You can try lower calorie replacements for calorie dense foods. Some of the communities favorites are cauliflower rice, zucchini noodles, spaghetti squash in place of their more calorie rich cousins. If it appeals to you an entire dietary change like Keto, Paleo, Vegetarian.

The most important thing to remember is that this selection of foods works for you. Sustainability is the key to long term weight management success. If you hate what you’re eating you won’t stick to it.

Exercise

Is NOT mandatory. You can lose fat and create a deficit through diet alone. There is no requirement of exercise to lose weight.

It has it’s own benefits though. You will burn extra calories. Exercise is shown to be beneficial to mental health and creates an endorphin rush as well. It makes people feel *awesome* and has been linked to higher rates of long term success when physical activity is included in lifestyle changes.

Crawl, Walk, Run

It can seem like one needs to make a 180 degree course correction to find success. That isn’t necessarily true. Many of our users find that creating small initial changes that build a foundation allows them to progress forward in even, sustained, increments.

Acceptance

You will struggle. We have all struggled. This is natural. There is no tip or trick to get through this though. We encourage you to recognize why you are struggling and forgive yourself for whatever reason that may be. If you overindulged at your last meal that is ok. You can resolve to make the next meal better.

Do not let the pursuit of perfect get in the way of progress. We don’t need perfect. We just want better.

Now you’re ready to do this. Here are more details, that may help you refine your plan.

Don’t go into health food stores if you’re overweight. Trust me, don’t.

Hi! If you’re seeing this post, thank you for clicking on little ol me. The worst thing just happened and I’m really upset over it, so I thought I’d share it here.

I’m vegan. I have been vegan since early 2020 as the pandemic began. Like many I gained lots of weight during the pandemic, both due to the lack of gyms/activities I could do, hitting a rock bottom depression that led to a lot of comfort eating, alongside starting new medications that both increased my appetite and caused me to gain weight like crazy.

Ironically enough, on March 2020, I posted publicly to my Instagram about my weight loss. Between the years 2016-2020 I had lost about 20kgs, and most people who knew me wouldn’t have recognised me as a thin her person because it was such a profound change. I was proud of my hard work and dedication. I was so happy to be healthy.

Now I’m sitting in a corner of a shopping Center holding back the tears. Not only did I gain all the weight I had lost over 2020, but the last time anyone saw me was when I was thin. I’m so large again that a lot of my clothes now are too tight and don’t fit, and just now I went to a health food store (they usually have lots of vegan goodies) and the cashier.... That cashier. He was very muscular and conventionally attractive. He acted like he knew it, too. So when I meekishly presented my vegan chocolate and crisps to him at the register, the look he gave me made my heart shatter. He looked at my body, and awkwardly said “oh, enjoy your... snacks”. Given it was a health food store, every other customer were either lifted from the pages of a fitness magazine or at the very least, thin. Getting vitamins or whole foods or whatnot. I know not every customer that’s ever been in that store fits the above description of course. But the way he looked me up and down, and almost seemed offended? Surprised? I wanted to burst into tears right then and there.

This is more a rant than anything, I don’t know if anyone will see this. But to hell if it kills me, I’m going to lose that 20kgs again this year. Even more. I’m gonna get healthy and get back on track. I don’t want to be looked at like I’m an oddity again.

A third of the way to my goal thanks to losing the allergens!

Tldr- Stalled despite doing the right stuff? Try an elimination diet/allergy testing!

At my heaviest, I was 447. I just weighed in at 365. For years I suffered with stomach upset, migraines, and a host of other issues. I've got fibromyalgia, so my doctors mostly wrote my symptoms off as my 'new normal' or gave me the line of 'if you weren't fat'. Meanwhile, I was doing everything I could to lose weight: monitoring my sleep, running at a calorie deficit, and eating the Mediterranean diet my nutritionist advised. I never lost more than a couple of pounds.

Last July, I started having the worst indigestion of my life. After some WebMD research (having lost insurance at the time) the easiest course of action to do at home seemed to be an elimination diet.

I went hard core, y'all.

I ate nothing but potatoes, rice, and green beans for three weeks. The first time I got to try cheese was like a blessing from the gods. When I realized that garlic gave me migraines, I wept bitterly. When I tracked all of the things I reacted to, the answer to my woes was clear: I was sensitive to FODMAPs.

Wtf was a fodmap?

"FODMAPs are a group of sugars that are not completely digested or absorbed in our intestines. When FODMAPs reach the small intestine, they move slowly, attracting water. When they pass into the large intestine, FODMAPs are fermented by gut bacteria, producing gas as a result. The extra gas and water cause the intestinal wall to stretch and expand." - from Monash.

I stepped off the scale at the same time that I eliminated all fodmaps from my diet. Then I had to accompany my partner to the doctor, and I asked to use their scale on a whim. Turns out that not being able to eat anything commercially made? It's a serious weight loss tool.

I'm down 80 pounds, 4 inches around my waist, and 5 migraines a week.

One negative after the weight loss...

F27, 5’7” and 60lbs down. About 20 to go but I’m in the heathy range.

One thing that makes me sad is looking at old photos. I had a wonderful last few years of traveling all over the world and being really happily surrounded by friends. I was losing weight the whole time, it’s been a slow loss, but man I am so grossed out by old photos of me. Even from 20lb ago when I stopped being overweight!

My friends share photos online for each other’s birthdays, and on the anniversary of a trip we took together. I have so many great ones but holy shit would I never post them. It makes me sad.

This is just a mini rant. It’s not a big deal, but it’s something I’m embarrassed about for sure. Especially since I’ve started dating someone new since about 10lbs ago and all the new contacts that come with him have no idea about my weight loss. I’m happy with how far I’ve come and I wouldn’t take it back. Just have to make some new memories.

23 year old heart patient. 250 --> 215 in 4.5 months.

I am a heart patient. 23 years old, 6'2", had open heart surgery when I was 19. This resulted in a really bad decrease and then increase of weight. pre-op I was 200 lbs. Post surgery I lost all ability to eat and hit 165. I looked like a skeleton. All at once, my appetite came back and with a vengeance. I skyrocketed to 250 lbs in less than 10 months. Ever since then, for the next 3 years, I struggled to start losing the weight. I tried being active, eating less, the most I could do was fluctuate between 235 and 250. Last year, I went to the gym, and was losing weight fast. I got to 230 but had to stop going to the gym due to COVID-19 and came back up to 250 yet again. I was convinced I would be at an unhealthy weight forever. Finally back in November, I became determined to get it right this time. I stopped eating 4 meals a day and snacks, and cut my calories down to 1700. I started going outside every day, fishing, hiking, whatever I could do to get active. I've had a hell of a ride. Lots of whooshes, lots of plateaus. Angry crying when I don't make my goal weight, and learning to understand patience and reconfiguring my relationship with food. It took 5 weeks after I started to see any weight loss at ALL.

Well, I'm happy to report that today, when I hit the scale, I saw 214 pounds. I am immensely relieved and proud to get past this barrier I've been facing for the past 3 years. I plan on going to 180 pounds, or 190. I don't care about the way I look (although I do look better, so it's a bonus), but I do care about my health. I just received the second dose of the covid vaccine today. In two weeks, I'm renewing my gym membership and going all the way. Wish me luck, everybody. 180, here I come.

Lost 38kg/84 pounds In 7 months

https://imgur.com/gallery/K8AoHPM

First picture is a still from a video I took, I avoided photos like the plague so was all I had.

Second picture is me yesterday trying on an old shirt that used to be tight.

I am 6ft1, started at 161kg/355 pounds...

This is how I did it:

  • Being so heavy initially, I started with fasting, so I would only eat 6 hours of a day. I focused mainly on calorie intake, sticking to 1400-1700 calories a day. I did go vegetarian for a month or two, which helped me change my poor eating habits and to think about what I was eating and more vegetable intake.
  • Once I had lost a bit of weight, quite quickly - I started up weight lifting at the gym 3 days a week, just a full body routine. I kept this up for 5 months, losing weight and continuing to keep track of my calories.
  • The last two months I have been really focusing on weight lifting, doing a 4 day routine, 2 days on upper body, 2 days on legs and then the other 3 days on cardio.
  • The cardio I have been doing is just keeping my heart rate above 145 for 30-40 minutes depending on how I am feeling.

TL:DR Ate less, exercised = weight loss haha.

I still have 20 kilos to lose, my goal weight is 100kg, I am putting on quite a lot of muscle, so with my frame I think that would be a good weight.

P.S I am wearing really short shorts in the photo.

Hungry me and not hungry me are two completely different people.

I get quite hangry, and hold none of the same health values when I'm hungry. I've been trying to get hungry me on board with weight loss, but she's not super keen.

I have an still trying to learn intuitive eating, but I have to anticipate more than 'listen' to signals. I know being hungry won't kill me, and I can control my behavior towards others (except sometimes when they are ditsing around).

I wouldn't say I eat incredibly bad when I reach that hunger point, but I definitely either don't eat the healthiest or the best portions sizes.

No one I know seems to have this same intensity when they are hungry. Has anyone had success overcoming this, or building habits around it?
