Depressed and way off target

Hello. My depression has taken a turn, it was very well managed. I had some lows but on average I was able to continue with things I wanted to do, and that included exercising. I was part of a local class that met on average 3 times a week for a total of 4 hours, and I did more at home on the odd days. These were High jntensity workout classes and my fitbit suggested I was burning an average of 600 calories per class.

I wasn't making any progress with my weight, and my clothes weren't any looser, but I felt better and healthier.

At around a year I started to feel very demotivated that I hadn't lost any weight through exercising, my diet was around 1400 calories a day, and after having my thyroid checked with no oncerns, I was distraught at all the effort I put in for no physical reward.

I am 85kg and I am desperate to get back on the horse and lose the weight. I just can't find the motivation to get going again 😪 I got very ill, then my depression got worse and then came the bad eating. I haven't worked out properly in a few months. I literally just want to sleep all the time.

How can I fix myself?

The common cold ruins always a perfectly good start of weight loss

Hi everyone, hope your journeys are going well!

Has anyone else ever noticed that every time they start a weight loss journey and exercising, they get the cold or something like that? I think I'm going crazy this literally happens every time!

I think it might have something to do with not eating as much and maybe going out more? I just recently got back on track with exercise and eating healthy and I have been sick twice this fall. First when I started I had a three week cold during September and now two weeks later when I got back on track with weight loss I'm sick again!

This sucks but I'm not caving in this time. I usually tend to give myself the "ohh but you're sick so you don't have to be so strict now". But I'm not gonna treat myself this time so while I can't exercise I'm gonna keep up my healthy eating habits. Maybe if I'm getting too weak I'm gonna make myself a big bowl of tomato soup, that always makes me feel better when ever I have the cold.

But yeah, anyone else noticed something like this happening to you? What are your go-to meals when you're sick and trying to stay calorie deficit?

Welcome to r/Loseit!

So you aren’t sure of how to start? Don’t worry! “How do I get started?” is our most asked question. r/Loseit has helped our users lose over 1,000,000 recorded pounds and these are the steps that we’ve found most useful for getting started.

Why you’re overweight

Our bodies are amazing (yes, yours too!). In order to survive before supermarkets, we had to be able to store energy to get us through lean times, we store this energy as adipose fat tissue. If you put more energy into your body than it needs, it stores it, for (potential) later use. When you put in less than it needs, it uses the stored energy. The more energy you have stored, the more overweight you are. The trick is to get your body to use the stored energy, which can only be done if you give it less energy than it needs, consistently.

Before You Start

The very first step is calculating your calorie needs. You can do that HERE. This will give you an approximation of your calorie needs for the day. The next step is to figure how quickly you want to lose the fat. One pound of fat is equal to 3500 calories. So to lose 1 pound of fat per week you will need to consume 500 calories less than your TDEE (daily calorie needs from the link above). 750 calories less will result in 1.5 pounds and 1000 calories is an aggressive 2 pounds per week.

Tracking

Here is where it begins to resemble work. The most efficient way to lose the weight you desire is to track your calorie intake. This has gotten much simpler over the years and today it can be done right from your smartphone or computer. r/loseit recommends an app like MyFitnessPal, Loseit! (unaffiliated), or Cronometer. Create an account and be honest with it about your current stats, activities, and goals. This is your tracker and no one else needs to see it so don’t cheat the numbers. You’ll find large user created databases that make logging and tracking your food and drinks easy with just the tap of the screen or the push of a button. We also highly recommend the use of a digital kitchen scale for accuracy. Knowing how much of what you're eating is more important than what you're eating. Why? This may explain it.

Creating Your Deficit

How do you create a deficit? This is up to you. r/loseit has a few recommendations but ultimately that decision is yours. There is no perfect diet for everyone. There is a perfect diet for you and you can create it. You can eat less of exactly what you eat now. If you like pizza you can have pizza. Have 2 slices instead of 4. You can try lower calorie replacements for calorie dense foods. Some of the communities favorites are cauliflower rice, zucchini noodles, spaghetti squash in place of their more calorie rich cousins. If it appeals to you an entire dietary change like Keto, Paleo, Vegetarian.

The most important thing to remember is that this selection of foods works for you. Sustainability is the key to long term weight management success. If you hate what you’re eating you won’t stick to it.

Exercise

Is NOT mandatory. You can lose fat and create a deficit through diet alone. There is no requirement of exercise to lose weight.

It has it’s own benefits though. You will burn extra calories. Exercise is shown to be beneficial to mental health and creates an endorphin rush as well. It makes people feel *awesome* and has been linked to higher rates of long term success when physical activity is included in lifestyle changes.

Crawl, Walk, Run

It can seem like one needs to make a 180 degree course correction to find success. That isn’t necessarily true. Many of our users find that creating small initial changes that build a foundation allows them to progress forward in even, sustained, increments.

Acceptance

You will struggle. We have all struggled. This is natural. There is no tip or trick to get through this though. We encourage you to recognize why you are struggling and forgive yourself for whatever reason that may be. If you overindulged at your last meal that is ok. You can resolve to make the next meal better.

Do not let the pursuit of perfect get in the way of progress. We don’t need perfect. We just want better.

Finally broke a 7 week plateau today!

I have been doing CICO and IF for 53 weeks. I have lost pretty consistently for most of it, but intentionally maintained my weight to give my body a break for two months in the summer. When I began restricting my calories again my weight loss was slow. For the last 7 weeks I have tracked, logged, moved, fasted, slept, and done all the things, BUT I only lost 1 pound. It’s frustrating to know I’m doing everything I should to see results but not see results.

Well today I got on the scale and was down 3 pounds. I finally got through the plateau!! I feel like I have a little more motivation now seeing the scale move. I am down 74 pounds since last October and I am so proud of how far I’ve come. I’m ready to work another year to get where I want to be, but the last several weeks have taught me that I should be generous with myself and dedicated to my health regardless of the external motivation.

Anybody else hit a difficult plateau? What are your go to strategies to keep yourself on track and motivated??

Can you eat too many egg whites?

I've been very serious about this weight loss journey and want to be sure I at least attempt to reach the protein goal. The current protein goal on my fitness pal based on my macros is over 288g, I've been eating one meal from my meal prep a day that usually contains between 30-40g's of protein and have been having 2 cups of egg whites three times a day scrambled. Doing all this has me at 202g of protein, 19gnet carbs and 13g of fat a day at 1202 calories. I mentioned this to a family member and they said I was eating too many egg whites and might be overeating but they're pure protein with no fat or cholesterol. I'm thinking of continuing with this for a week to see how my weight loss progresses. Am I eating too many egg whites? Is that even possible?

Coming Back From Weight Regain After 170lb Weight Loss

Hi everyone.

Years after I thought was the end of my weight loss journey, I am struggling once again with the feeling of being out of control. 5 years ago I set out to finally get a grip of my weight issues and self-loathing when I topped the scale at 350lbs. The journey was long but I stuck to it, using a combination of alternate day fasting and calorie counting to arrive at my lowest weight (180lbs) 3 years later. For reference, I'm a 5'11, big boned female.

Unfortunately, my cravings and obsessions with food skyrocketed when I lost the weight and it's been a upward slope (weight-wise) ever since. The pandemic didn't help matters either. I have regained quite a bit at the moment (I sit at 250 pounds now) fighting back with all I know about food and nutrition - portion control, calorie counting, healthy and mindful eating. You name it, I've done it...but the urge to just overeat or binge is overwhelming.

I am stumped with my absolute lack of willpower compared to years ago when the process seemed easier to bear. it's like I just can't diet anymore at this point.

At the same time I just can't simply go back to where I started at 350 pounds (or even worse). I know that I have to stop and reverse this trend while I still can.

I would like to replies from anyone who has ever been where I am now (i.e. extreme weight loss, struggles, regain) but ultimately turned the tide. How did you come out of this funk? I'm talking about dealing with food cravings and taming the urge to overeat for pleasure, as someone who was morbidly obese.

A simple 20lbs lost has made a world of difference in my looks and confidence

I'm a 6'4 male, 21, and at my heaviest I was 268lbs, and currently I am 248lbs and dropping. 20lbs at that weight did not seem like much of a change whatsoever, until I've been recently looking in the mirror, and I can actually see my shoulders, my collarbone shows again, I don't have a fat roll between my moobs and my stomach anymore, and my back actually looks like it has some shape again. My confidence has also went up a ton, not so much with my looks, but just the sheer fact that I know I am changing the one thing I hated myself for for so long.

For weight loss, I've been simply counting calories, I don't worry too much about it when I eat healthy foods (which has been a huge diet change, I try to eat only fresh meat, veggies and fruits as much as possible), but just watch portions when I each unhealthy foods, and lastly, not drinking my calories. Simply eating fresh and stopping fast food 4 to 5x a week has made me feel so light, not sluggish anymore, and believe in myself that I can change anything with time and effort. Here's to progress, everyone!
