Day 1? Starting your weight loss journey on Wednesday, 28 April 2021? Start here!

Today is your Day 1?

Welcome to r/Loseit!

So you aren’t sure of how to start? Don’t worry! “How do I get started?” is our most asked question. r/Loseit has helped our users lose over 1,000,000 recorded pounds and these are the steps that we’ve found most useful for getting started.

Why you’re overweight

Our bodies are amazing (yes, yours too!). In order to survive before supermarkets, we had to be able to store energy to get us through lean times, we store this energy as adipose fat tissue. If you put more energy into your body than it needs, it stores it, for (potential) later use. When you put in less than it needs, it uses the stored energy. The more energy you have stored, the more overweight you are. The trick is to get your body to use the stored energy, which can only be done if you give it less energy than it needs, consistently.

Before You Start

The very first step is calculating your calorie needs. You can do that HERE. This will give you an approximation of your calorie needs for the day. The next step is to figure how quickly you want to lose the fat. One pound of fat is equal to 3500 calories. So to lose 1 pound of fat per week you will need to consume 500 calories less than your TDEE (daily calorie needs from the link above). 750 calories less will result in 1.5 pounds and 1000 calories is an aggressive 2 pounds per week.

Tracking

Here is where it begins to resemble work. The most efficient way to lose the weight you desire is to track your calorie intake. This has gotten much simpler over the years and today it can be done right from your smartphone or computer. r/loseit recommends an app like MyFitnessPal, Loseit! (unaffiliated), or Cronometer. Create an account and be honest with it about your current stats, activities, and goals. This is your tracker and no one else needs to see it so don’t cheat the numbers. You’ll find large user created databases that make logging and tracking your food and drinks easy with just the tap of the screen or the push of a button. We also highly recommend the use of a digital kitchen scale for accuracy. Knowing how much of what you're eating is more important than what you're eating. Why? This may explain it.

Creating Your Deficit

How do you create a deficit? This is up to you. r/loseit has a few recommendations but ultimately that decision is yours. There is no perfect diet for everyone. There is a perfect diet for you and you can create it. You can eat less of exactly what you eat now. If you like pizza you can have pizza. Have 2 slices instead of 4. You can try lower calorie replacements for calorie dense foods. Some of the communities favorites are cauliflower rice, zucchini noodles, spaghetti squash in place of their more calorie rich cousins. If it appeals to you an entire dietary change like Keto, Paleo, Vegetarian.

The most important thing to remember is that this selection of foods works for you. Sustainability is the key to long term weight management success. If you hate what you’re eating you won’t stick to it.

Exercise

Is NOT mandatory. You can lose fat and create a deficit through diet alone. There is no requirement of exercise to lose weight.

It has it’s own benefits though. You will burn extra calories. Exercise is shown to be beneficial to mental health and creates an endorphin rush as well. It makes people feel *awesome* and has been linked to higher rates of long term success when physical activity is included in lifestyle changes.

Crawl, Walk, Run

It can seem like one needs to make a 180 degree course correction to find success. That isn’t necessarily true. Many of our users find that creating small initial changes that build a foundation allows them to progress forward in even, sustained, increments.

Acceptance

You will struggle. We have all struggled. This is natural. There is no tip or trick to get through this though. We encourage you to recognize why you are struggling and forgive yourself for whatever reason that may be. If you overindulged at your last meal that is ok. You can resolve to make the next meal better.

Do not let the pursuit of perfect get in the way of progress. We don’t need perfect. We just want better.

Weight loss with PCOS??

24F ~185lb 5’5

I have to preface this by saying at my highest weight I was 238 so I definitely have lost a significant bit, but for the past 2 years I’ve fluctuated between the 180-190s and all this time I’ve still had a big midsection/tummy (specifically the lower region). No matter what I do it seems like I can’t lose the 30 extra lbs I want to lose or the tummy. Anyone else have PCOS and have the same problem? I’m at my wits end and I want to lose it so bad, but don’t know what else to do. I’ve done Weight Watchers which got me down to 178 but I hit a plateau and could also no longer afford it. Any help or advice would be so appreciated!

Is less weight loss when first exercising normal?

So i record my weight every few days have for months been losing 3-4 kilos a month for a good while but whilst i was doing that my lifestyle was SUPER sedentary i got maybe 1000 steps if i was lucky most days i would wake up set up to study on my pc then goto bed.

Anyhow my weight loss slowed down from 1kg a week to 0.3k-0.4kg rather suddenly after i started exercising 40 min - 1 hour of brisk walking a day 5-7 km i am drinking a lot more water now i went from drinking 1.5l to 3l just because of the exercise.

My friend told me when you first start exercising the body can hold extra water weight for the first few weeks and that's probably what's making my losses look suddenly half as good but im super skeptical on that.

Is there any truth to what he is saying? i'm not eating any more or less only drinking more water.

I mean i'm still losing 0.3kg-0.4kg a week so i'm not too upset a loss is still a loss but it just confuses me how it only dropped so suddenly after i started exercising.

edit: i should note that my calorie intake is 1800 a day ever since i started losing weight i went from 2000 calories a day to 1800 now in a 3 month period i have been slowly eating less and less to go with the metabolism drop not sure if this info will help but yeah.

NSV

Good evening fellow weight loss friends!!

I am so proud of myself. I haven't binged in 5 days...the longest period in over a month. I am also really focusing on my habits. I am preparing healthy meals instead of buying snacks and junk. Also, I have not felt awesome, but I have worked out the past two days and I'm starting to enjoy it again.

Does anyone else not enjoy going to the gym unless your nutrition is on track? You cannot outtrain a bad diet and I KNOW that.

Anywho my NSV for today: Weighed 130lb (lowest since I started tracking again) Stopped at a gas station and DID NOT BUY JUNK FOOD. I purchased a banana and it was amazing & I didn't feel awful afterwards.

Lastly, I feel more positive today on this journey. The beginning is always tough for me. I saw a quote today that really helped me evaluate my actions. "They say time always changes things, but you actually have to change them yourself."

So today I put forth the effort to make conscious changes and I feel awesome and so proud of myself. I can't wait to see more success!

Help with weight loss

Big girl here....... so here’s my story, I didn’t always use to be big. In fact I use to be very fit and athletic but over the unkind years and 3 kids later I have reached a unhealthy weight that I swore I’d never reach..... a whooping 350 pounds. I’ve tried all sorts of diets and and finally just stuck to trying to cut out the sugars, and carbs and portion control. I’ve got a gym membership, but due to the gym being across town from me and I have no money for gas, I am needing to work out from home for now. I need help coming up with a workout plan that is doable and something I will actually stick to. What equipment do I have to work with, I have a punching bag, weighted ball, kettlebell, and that’s it. Can anyone help me come up with a daily workout (def need something to work out my legs abs and arms) but something that is joy high intense. I have very bad feet and back. Please I need help and advise. And please no judgement. Tia.

The pandemic fucked up my weight loss. (21M, CW: 242 lbs / 110 Kg)

Sorry for being so depressive and bitter about this :D

From January 2019 (weighed in at 249 lbs/113 kg) to September 2019, I managed to lose more than 25 kg (55 lbs) of body fat (undergone body scans three times - At the beginning of WL, during the WL and at the end of it). I was tracking my calories and trying to keep a 500 calorie deficit and it was successful. Next to eating clean, I would train at least 4 times a week (Muay Thai classes, 1-2 hours long workout sessions). Then from September to January I was just keeping the weight steady (around 90 kg) and pretty successfully.

Then the Corona came :D I spent 3 months of non-stop work in a warehouse (family business) and almost zero time to actually focus on my meals or trainings. I would have 2 meals a day but wouldnt count anything on my plate (but it was still healthy and simple) and even then I would try to do like 30 minutes of bodyweight workouts outside my home. Later on, during May, I even started jumping rope and actually got to a really good shape. Our gyms opened up at the end of May (I live in the Czech republic) and I started working out there again. My weight actually jumped when I started attending our gym. But it was for a short period where I was 95 kg instead of the normal 90 kg.

Unfortunately the government started limiting gyms at the end of October because of an incredible spike in the Covid numbers (imagine 10-15K daily cases in a country of just over 10 milion people). That is why I stopped attending the gyms altogether. I didn't want to risk catching this shit because of my father who would suffer greatly if I was to pass it on to him.

Since November to February, I went from 95 kgs to 110 kgs and I still don't understand how that happened. I became really depressed for these 3 months, I would eat all the unhealthy stuff that I could :D I am just so fucking angry that this pandemic happened, because of losing all the gains and gaining all my weight back. I had no motivation to attend online classes, work in our warehouse or eat healthy / train.

I have been working out in my garage (15 minutes of heavy bag work) for the last 2-3 weeks because I fucking can't see myself in the mirror without becoming really angry. I just feel like the second wave of lockdowns hit me really badly and it is very difficult for me to overcome this when locked down at home.

This is just a post that sums up my emotions, I know I will lose all this fucking fat that I gained back because I have already done it once, its just that I hate being slowed down in my progress. I want to train for full 60+ mins without feeling like I am about to die.

How do I diet more than a month? Help me to lose weight consistently reddit!

I remember on June that I wanted to attempt go on a weight loss journey. I started off with exercise first, nothing changed. I tried to get a cleaner diet but I didn't believe I can make it trough. I discovered CICO on September and for the first time I dieted for a month. I had binges at times so I went to a dietician, after 3 week I couldn't restrict anymore even when I tried so I gave up. I kept exercising. The thing is what most people don't say about weight loss is that it is slow and is different for everyone, for me I lose weight slower than some people. I went from 80 ish kgs to 74 kgs in 4 months. It can seem like it is good but after leaving the diet that the dietician gave, my weight rised up. Until end of the February, I tried to actually have a low fat low carb diet and went for an hour of walk everyday. I ate as low carbs as possible because I got palpilations everytime. I discovered eating raw veggies helping with digestion and nuts helping with curbing hunger and fruits became my satisfaction for sugar cravings. I tried to be healthy and cooked my own meals. You see healthy doesn't equal weight loss. I am sure I tried to do CICO as much as I can. At the end of February, I reached 79 kgs. It was a no surprise for me as I couldn't stop eating carbs for few weeks. I decided to be strict and do CICO 800-1100 cals ( with no raw vegetable and fruit count which I ate a lot of salad and fruits so it is probably around 1000-1300 cals) I wasn't perfect but I could stick to it for 5 weeks and I got down to 75 kgs. Family gatherings happened and I couldn't control my eating so I somehow went up to 77 kgs and never went down. Then Ramadhan came and I coudn't control my diet since. But I am dedicated to start off again after Ramadhan.

I want to diet consistently for 5-6 months and be one of those people that lose 20 kgs. Just how do people do this? It is so hard to multitask with college along with ignoring my family's unhealthy diet.

After 3-4 weeks my dedication lowers and I can't force myself to restrict that well. Just how do people do it so easily? I suffered a lot to lose that 4 kgs in 5 weeks, I couldn't even study properly and was obsessed with my weight.

Just how do I become one of those people that lose their excess weight in few months?
