It's really tough to estimate restaurant food calories

After finally getting out of a stall in my weight loss, it's pretty clear to me that going out more often and eating restaurant food was a big culprit in causing me to eat more calories than I thought I was eating. I would think "oh it's probably 400, so I'll put 500 or 600 to be safe" and yet was still finding my weight bouncing around the same 2kgs. I wasn't gaining but I sure as hell wasn't losing. There must be so many more calories in the food than I would assume.

But now that the things causing me to eat out are done with and I'm tracking calories precisely, the number on the scales is going down again. I'm 400g away from a mini-goal where I'll be rewarding myself with a new pair of board shorts for the summer!

Two Years In: 21 Pounds Down and Ready to Commit Again!

Hey everyone!

I wanted to take a moment to share my weight loss journey with you all, as it’s been quite the ride! I started back in September 2022, and honestly, it was a rough start. I went up 5 pounds before I finally lost about 20 pounds over 10 months. Just when I felt like I was making progress, I thought I deserved a break. So, I stepped away from using LoseIt, and that’s when things really started to slip.

I fell back into my old habits way faster than I expected. I was eating like a kid—cookies, cakes, and all the candy I could find. I didn’t say no to anything, didn’t prioritize healthy foods, and completely gave up working out for months! Before I knew it, I had gained back 10 pounds in just six months. It was like a reality check that I lost half my progress, and I knew I had to make a change.

Determined to get back to my lowest weight, I signed up for the gym again and worked on getting back into that routine. It took a couple of months, but I finally found my way back to counting calories and being disciplined. Fast forward to today, and I’m proud to say I’ve come a long way! I started at 192.6 lbs, hit a high of 197.6 lbs, and I’m currently at 172.4 lbs. My lowest weight was 168.6 lbs just last month, and I’m thrilled to say that for the first time in five years, I was out of the "obese" bmi range!

At 5'3" and 33 years old, I know it’s tough to reach a healthy weight when my eating habits resemble those of a sugar-loving child! After hitting 168.6 lbs, I went to a wedding and indulged a bit too much. I was going out three or more times a week, enjoying food and sugary drinks without a second thought. For a moment, I thought about taking a maintenance break, but then I remembered the struggle of nearly a year spent gaining weight and losing progress.

This journey is a lifestyle change, and I need to get a grip on my mentality and habits if I want to reach my dream weight of 135 lbs. Right now, my short-term goal is 165 lbs, with a long-term goal of 150 lbs. I don’t know how long it will take, but I know what it’s going to require.

For the first time since I joined LoseIt! two years ago, I went back and looked at what I ate and the exercises I did the week leading up to my lowest weight. I’m recommitting to that plan because clearly, it works for me.

So here I am, two years in and 21 pounds down! I’m excited to keep pushing forward, and I’m grateful for this community. Let’s go!!!

Exercise actually made a difference

These last couple of months I have been having trouble actually sleeping at night. I am always very sleepy but only get 1 to 2 hours of sleep per night after hours of tossing and turning. And thats only when my toddler and baby actually stay sleep through the night.

I have been losing weight by just eating less and cutting out junk. Which worked great for getting 50lbs off but, not so great for losing more weight. My current way of eating is now just maintaining my inital weight loss.

I was running on 1-2 hours of sleep daily, making exercise unthinkable, but I forced myself to start with 30-minute low-impact workouts. I could not believe how much of an improvement exercising for 30 mintues a day had on made on my sleep and overall well-being. I went from 260-265 pounds to 250-255 pounds. (with a daily fluctuation of +/- 5 pounds, likely due to water weight.)

I think now I need to actually start counting calories or at the bare minimum know how many calories I am actually consuming in a day and go from there. I am trying to lose 100lbs hopefully by this time next year if not sooner. That might still be over weight for my height (5'7) but way healthier than being obese.

I’ve started walking and now I’m really hungry?

I've seen a post similar to mine but I'd like some more curated advice. I used to struggle with this horribly in the past because then I used to jump rope, dance, weight train from time to time and walk around depending on my destination. When I stopped doing all those things the food noise had calmed down, but now just walking daily has my every waking thought be about food. Even minutes after I eat I feel hungry?? Like 20 minutes fly by and I'm thinking about what to eat next and my stomachs growling.

I stopped weight loss then because I kept eating and snacking and thought I was gaining weight because of it (I had no proof but it really affected me) I don't want to go through that again and even as I'm writing this my stomach seems to growl.

What apps/devices actually help?

I’m starting on my weight loss journey and I just signed up for my local planet fitness. They have an app. My iPhone has an app. The three year old Fitbit my friend gave me has an app…it’s all apps! What apps/devices have actually helped you with establishing a regular exercise routine?

I think my biggest struggle will be accountability. I’m a tired dad with three kids and I don’t feel like getting up and out that often (because I’m chasing kids all day long). I need to get my weight under control and get my health back in shape.

Any suggestions?

I know what to do, but can't stick to it

So I'm not new to the whole diet/ weight loss process but find it insanely hard to actually stick to it.

-I can't weigh/track my food for the life of me.

-I tend to eat standing up (part of it is because of my job, we need to eat fast etc) .

-I often eat straight from the container, can't be bothered with plating everything ( I know, sounds stupid, but I can't seem to break this habit)

-I eat chocolate , not a super large amount, but if I don't, I feel restricted

-I try to meal prep but HATE cooking,
(Though I hardly eat out)

  • I HATE the feeling of always being hungry

I don't eat junk food, fried food etc. I eat TONS of veggies. Just likely a bit more quantity of whole foods

I just feel helpless. I'm not obese, but I'm definitely not "fit" either.

Exercising is EASY for me. I work out daily, and always prioritize it.

How do you stick to it without feeling restricted?

Milestone Prizes

To keep myself motivated (40lbs lost so far, woo hoo!) I've been designating wonderful prizes to each milestone I set for myself, weight wise. For example, I promised myself a new TV for the living room once I made it consistently under 200 again. I purchased invisalign once I hit 180 consistently. With the final 10 pounds being the most notoriously hard to lose, I've run out of prize ideas. Unfortunately a pedicure or a nail day does not hold enough weight for me. For those who also had to "dangle the carrot" persay, what prizes did you offer yourself? Any ideas on other prizes for me? I'll list the prizes I've done so far below for anyone who's interested.
Also, I don't NEED the prizes to stay motivated, it just sweetens the deal in my mind when others in my office at work are having cookies and candy and mexican restaurants for lunch that I have something far better waiting for me at the end of a current milestone (on top of the weight loss). It also helps soften the blow when I say no to the frivilous lunches they go on, that I have (insert fantastic prize here) waiting for me.

So far, here have been my prizes:

  • Invisilign (I only needed a 6 month treatment plan)
  • Kayak Trip with Friends
  • Spa Day with Facial and Massage
  • Closet Refresh Mall Day (clothes that fit me shopping spree)

  • Flea Market Haul
  • Day trip to visit pinball museums and scenic train rides
