Day 1? Starting your weight loss journey on Monday, 03 June 2019? Start here!

Today is your Day 1?

Welcome to r/Loseit!

So you aren’t sure of how to start? Don’t worry! “How do I get started?” is our most asked question. r/Loseit has helped our users lose over 1,000,000 recorded pounds and these are the steps that we’ve found most useful for getting started.

Why you’re overweight

Our bodies are amazing (yes, yours too!). In order to survive before supermarkets, we had to be able to store energy to get us through lean times, we store this energy as adipose fat tissue. If you put more energy into your body than it needs, it stores it, for (potential) later use. When you put in less than it needs, it uses the stored energy. The more energy you have stored, the more overweight you are. The trick is to get your body to use the stored energy, which can only be done if you give it less energy than it needs, consistently.

Before You Start

The very first step is calculating your calorie needs. You can do that HERE. This will give you an approximation of your calorie needs for the day. The next step is to figure how quickly you want to lose the fat. One pound of fat is equal to 3500 calories. So to lose 1 pound of fat per week you will need to consume 500 calories less than your TDEE (daily calorie needs from the link above). 750 calories less will result in 1.5 pounds and 1000 calories is an aggressive 2 pounds per week.

Tracking

Here is where it begins to resemble work. The most efficient way to lose the weight you desire is to track your calorie intake. This has gotten much simpler over the years and today it can be done right from your smartphone or computer. r/loseit recommends an app like MyFitnessPal, Loseit! (unaffiliated), or Cronometer. Create an account and be honest with it about your current stats, activities, and goals. This is your tracker and no one else needs to see it so don’t cheat the numbers. You’ll find large user created databases that make logging and tracking your food and drinks easy with just the tap of the screen or the push of a button. We also highly recommend the use of a digital kitchen scale for accuracy. Knowing how much of what you're eating is more important than what you're eating. Why? This may explain it.

Creating Your Deficit

How do you create a deficit? This is up to you. r/loseit has a few recommendations but ultimately that decision is yours. There is no perfect diet for everyone. There is a perfect diet for you and you can create it. You can eat less of exactly what you eat now. If you like pizza you can have pizza. Have 2 slices instead of 4. You can try lower calorie replacements for calorie dense foods. Some of the communities favorites are cauliflower rice, zucchini noodles, spaghetti squash in place of their more calorie rich cousins. If it appeals to you an entire dietary change like Keto, Paleo, Vegetarian.

The most important thing to remember is that this selection of foods works for you. Sustainability is the key to long term weight management success. If you hate what you’re eating you won’t stick to it.

Exercise

Is NOT mandatory. You can lose fat and create a deficit through diet alone. There is no requirement of exercise to lose weight.

It has it’s own benefits though. You will burn extra calories. Exercise is shown to be beneficial to mental health and creates an endorphin rush as well. It makes people feel awesome and has been linked to higher rates of long term success when physical activity is included in lifestyle changes.

Crawl, Walk, Run

It can seem like one needs to make a 180 degree course correction to find success. That isn’t necessarily true. Many of our users find that creating small initial changes that build a foundation allows them to progress forward in even, sustained, increments.

Acceptance

You will struggle. We have all struggled. This is natural. There is no tip or trick to get through this though. We encourage you to recognize why you are struggling and forgive yourself for whatever reason that may be. If you overindulged at your last meal that is ok. You can resolve to make the next meal better.

Do not let the pursuit of perfect get in the way of progress. We don’t need perfect. We just want better.

Additional resources

Now you’re ready to do this. Here are more details, that may help you refine your plan.

Losing weight but not inches?

Hello everyone.

My SW: 81 kgs in January 2018.Waist: 35.5 inch CW: 70.2 kgs today. Waist: 28-28.5 inches. I am 5'6, F.

So I am excited to say I am 0.2 kgs away from entering the 60's for the first time in my entire life. I am dying for the number to show up on the scale so I can snap it and record it as evidence of all my hard work.

Looking at before and after pictures, I can definitely notice my face and legs slimming. However, my waist measurements, which are usually in line with my weight loss, have not changed much during the last couple months (stuck at 28 inches) and that worries me and makes me believe I am only losing water weight or even muscle mass.

Lately I haven't been eating much and at the same time, my last decent workout was 2 weeks ago and have been sporadic due to the stressors in my life. I also fell ill twice this month, and I am approaching the end of my period.

I am just worried if this month's weight loss is truly sustainable or just a fluke due to all that has happened. A month ago I was 71.6 kg and I usually don't lose more than 1 kg per month. Once I get healthier again will my weight pick up suddenly? Appreciate any thoughtful opinion/input.

Weight Loss: Conscious effort required

I've been trying to lose weight for a while now, and it's occurred to me that this is going to take a lot of conscious effort.

I'm F, 5'5", CW: 147lbs, GW: 120lbs. I have weight to lose, but I'm not technically overweight. This past week, I've actually been counting calories. I can eat about 1200cals, with a buffer if I work out. I've lost a pound.

It's a lot of conscious work. I can't just cut out junk or alcohol; I wasn't consuming that much to begin with. I can't go out to eat anymore either. One meal could blow my entire caloric intake. Goodbye social life.

I basically need to pay attention to everything I eat because it's very easy to mess up. It's just a ridiculous amount of vigilance and I understand how some people go into ED territory. I'm not even an emotional eater (actually, I don't eat when I'm stressed). I do take pleasure in food, and I love eating out socially.

Anyway, for those who have managed to lose weight, you should be very pleased. I'm hoping I can maintain this momentum and join your ranks, soon enough.

For those of you who work in the food industry and are successful with your weight loss, what’s your secret?

I currently work at a bakery. All of our stuff is freshly made, and I sometimes aid in making cookies, muffins, brownies...all the goodies. I’m so used to taking a little bite of a brownie or a broken cookie every now and then.

Today at work was the first day that I did NOT eat a single sweet. I instead opted for the watermelon we sell and a Kind bar. It’s very hard being around so many yummy foods. Especially watching customers get our desserts and take a bite out of it and exclaim just how GOOD it is.

It’s like..I want a bite too! But I know I shouldn’t.

So, for those of you in the food industry surrounded by foods you enjoy...what’s your secret to motivation? What keeps you from grabbing a bite of something?

From 354lbs to 295lbs since 14JAN2019 (58lbs down in 20 weeks). 33% of the way to my final goal and not planning on slowing down any time soon.

Overview

On the 14th of January 2019 I weighed in at 354.06lbs and after 20 weeks of work (including 4 weeks of really hard work) I'm now weighing in at 295.86lbs. I entered Twotopia 2 weeks ago and it was something I started to think would never happen.

I used to think "Oh sure before I'm 50 I'll probably drop down to a normal size" but I've tried a dozen 'diets' before and nothing ever stuck, I was resigned to being the big guy forever. That is until I tried to play at a kids play centre with my 1-year-old and have never felt so unfit in all my life.

Facts and Figures

One of the oddest things I noticed was that my smart scales said I would weigh 80kg if I wasn't overweight and I started at 160kg. I weighed exactly one normal me more than I should, it's almost fate I started when I did.

I love crunching numbers and this is some of the numbers I get to play with every week:

 Kilograms Pounds Stone / Pounds BMI BMI Category Percent of Start Weight Percent of Final Weight Starting Weight 160.60 354.06 25 st, 4.1 lbs 47.44 Obese Class IV: Morbidly Obese 100.00% 100.00% Current Weight 134.20 295.86 21 st, 1.9 lbs 39.64 Obese Class II: Severely Obese 83.56% 67.25% Final Weight 80.00 176.37 12 st, 8.4 lbs 23.63 Normal (Healthy Weight) 49.81% 0.00% Total to Lose 80.60 177.69 12 st, 9.7 lbs 23.81 - 50.19% - Total Lost: Running Total 26.4 kg 58.2 lbs 4 st, 2.2 lbs 7.80 - 16.44% 33.00% Total Remaining 54.20 119.49 8 st, 7.5 lbs 16.01 - 33.75% 67.25%

The spreadsheet I'm using to track the above:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1wMuiRK_afNLLFjuiriv7Jo71Br5YHNjLKUZGtGB96PU/edit?usp=sharing

The blue squares are big goals:

  • It could be a symbolic number like 55lbs because it puts me into Twotopia
  • Something I really want such as weighing less than I have for at least the last 7 years
  • This post to /r/loseit

All the cells automatically change colours based on an insane amount of spreadsheet formatting I did (but I love spreadsheeting), almost every week when I add an updated current weight something else will change colour.

Having all the micro goals has been such a key contributor for me in the last 2 months. I am almost always hitting some key number in one of the weight systems which just helps keep me focusing on that next little goal while the big goals hit themselves.

Motivation vs Inspiration

The way I see it is that for a successful weight loss regime you need inspiration and motivation. 🔥 Inspiration is the spark that starts the fire (gets you going for a couple of weeks), 🌳 motivation is the fuel in the fire (keeps you going until the end).

What I found when I started losing wasn't that I actually had a lack of motivation, not this time and probably not for a long time. I've been wanting to diet for the last 5 years, what I've really been lacking in is the inspiration. The day at the play centre with the 1-year-old was the spark I needed to get going. Alongside this my key motivators aren't actually on the spreadsheet, the main reasons I've wanted to lose weight are:

  • Not being a fat dad, someone that can run around a play centre and kick a ball around with their kid without being exhausted in 10 seconds
  • Not being a fat husband, who snores likes a pig and lives off an inhaler
  • There are 1 or 2 other things

All I was missing was the spark to get me going until it gets "easy" a few weeks in. Don't get me wrong those first few weeks are so hard but without the spark and the fuel I'd not be 58 lbs down now.

Favourite Goals I've Hit

Some of the fun little numbers I've hit on this journey:

  1. 5 trouser sizes down, started at 52" waist and can now fit in a 42" waist
  2. I'm still using the same belt as when I started and I'm onto my 7th belt notch now, I'll get a new one when I'm 10 notches in but it's like my own badge of honour now
  3. Weigh less than 300lbs for the first time since 2015
  4. My initial goal was 52lbs within a year, 1 pound a week. I hit this goal in less than 4 months, really happy with this one.
  5. Two BMI obesity classes down! Two to go before I'm only 'overweight'.
  6. Hopefully I'll be back here in another 42 pounds to post an update 🤞

Day to Day Weight Loss

I'm just counting calories, I'm not looking at protein or carbs just CICO. I started at 2160 a day just for a week then dropped to 1900 and dropped another 100 every time I lost a stone. I've got to 1600 a day now which seems to be working fine. I eat so much fruit and veg but can still get treats in it's working great.

I used to get fast food/takeaway 5-7 days a week so one of the biggest god sends has been the right sort of takeaway. Chicken kebabs on pitta with salad and sriracha, around 600 calories but it's a real takeaway and helps me so much on this diet knowing I can get a nice meal without breaking budget.

TL;DR and Pictures

I've lost 58 pounds, 🔥🌳, 5 trouser sizes, dropped 2 BMI classes and made a spreadsheet. I'm 33% of the way to my final goal.

Trouser sizes

Slight Face Change: 354 Pound Passport Photo vs 295 pound Blue Steel

Slight Gut Change

Didn't plan my pictures well enough in advance, just working with what I've got.

Transitioning to maintenance and the effect on mental heath

How do people here deal with the transition to maintenance and the impact on mental health. I have reached my goal weight for the first time and am trying to maintain. At times it feels like I have developed an unhealthy relationship with food, constantly judging myself for everything I eat. I also find I feel guilty very easily for eating anything previously considered “off-limits” - which is really discouraging.

I though that when I reached my goal I would have a normal relationship with food. To be able to enjoy life, eat well and be healthy, but I find my weight loss journey has resulted in the opposite. Constantly feeling guilty and ashamed of everything related to food.
