So you aren’t sure of how to start? Don’t worry! “How do I get started?” is our most asked question. r/Loseit has helped our users lose over 1,000,000 recorded pounds and these are the steps that we’ve found most useful for getting started.

Why you’re overweight

Our bodies are amazing (yes, yours too!). In order to survive before supermarkets, we had to be able to store energy to get us through lean times, we store this energy as adipose fat tissue. If you put more energy into your body than it needs, it stores it, for (potential) later use. When you put in less than it needs, it uses the stored energy. The more energy you have stored, the more overweight you are. The trick is to get your body to use the stored energy, which can only be done if you give it less energy than it needs, consistently.

Before You Start

The very first step is calculating your calorie needs. You can do that HERE. This will give you an approximation of your calorie needs for the day. The next step is to figure how quickly you want to lose the fat. One pound of fat is equal to 3500 calories. So to lose 1 pound of fat per week you will need to consume 500 calories less than your TDEE (daily calorie needs from the link above). 750 calories less will result in 1.5 pounds and 1000 calories is an aggressive 2 pounds per week.

Tracking

Here is where it begins to resemble work. The most efficient way to lose the weight you desire is to track your calorie intake. This has gotten much simpler over the years and today it can be done right from your smartphone or computer. r/loseit recommends an app like MyFitnessPal, Loseit! (unaffiliated), or Cronometer. Create an account and be honest with it about your current stats, activities, and goals. This is your tracker and no one else needs to see it so don’t cheat the numbers. You’ll find large user created databases that make logging and tracking your food and drinks easy with just the tap of the screen or the push of a button. We also highly recommend the use of a digital kitchen scale for accuracy. Knowing how much of what you're eating is more important than what you're eating. Why? This may explain it.

Creating Your Deficit

How do you create a deficit? This is up to you. r/loseit has a few recommendations but ultimately that decision is yours. There is no perfect diet for everyone. There is a perfect diet for you and you can create it. You can eat less of exactly what you eat now. If you like pizza you can have pizza. Have 2 slices instead of 4. You can try lower calorie replacements for calorie dense foods. Some of the communities favorites are cauliflower rice, zucchini noodles, spaghetti squash in place of their more calorie rich cousins. If it appeals to you an entire dietary change like Keto, Paleo, Vegetarian.

The most important thing to remember is that this selection of foods works for you. Sustainability is the key to long term weight management success. If you hate what you’re eating you won’t stick to it.

Exercise

Is NOT mandatory. You can lose fat and create a deficit through diet alone. There is no requirement of exercise to lose weight.

It has it’s own benefits though. You will burn extra calories. Exercise is shown to be beneficial to mental health and creates an endorphin rush as well. It makes people feel awesome and has been linked to higher rates of long term success when physical activity is included in lifestyle changes.

Crawl, Walk, Run

It can seem like one needs to make a 180 degree course correction to find success. That isn’t necessarily true. Many of our users find that creating small initial changes that build a foundation allows them to progress forward in even, sustained, increments.

Acceptance

You will struggle. We have all struggled. This is natural. There is no tip or trick to get through this though. We encourage you to recognize why you are struggling and forgive yourself for whatever reason that may be. If you overindulged at your last meal that is ok. You can resolve to make the next meal better.

Do not let the pursuit of perfect get in the way of progress. We don’t need perfect. We just want better.

Had two weeks off my diet and didn’t gain weight

So, I’ve got a lot of weight to loose. I had a big weight loss in my first month. However I’m not rushing it as I have a lot to lose. My first goal weight is to hit 250lbs by the end of the year.

I had two weeks of my diet due to a job change, various birthdays/meals out and festivals. Two days ago was the first day I weighed myself (fully expecting to have gained 4/5lbs) - turns out somehow I didn’t gain any weight. I’ve had multiple meals out, 2/3 tubs of Ben and Jerry’s, chocolate and birthday cake in this time. For the first time in my life I didn’t go ‘overboard’ like I use to do. I actually think I ate these things is moderation (previously unheard of).

I’m honestly so proud of myself - I’m hoping I can be under 300 in the next two weeks.

How working in fast food has helped my weight loss

I got a job probably around a month ago or so. Maybe more. It is in fast food, which I was extremely worried about for a while, because I have a hard time controlling myself with those things. On the upside, I don’t LOVE the food there so the temptation level is pretty low. Also it’s not free- just a 30% discount. Up until tonight I hadn’t weighed myself in a good couple of months, but when I stepped on the scale today, it read 190. In late March I was around 210, but it fluctuated heavily. I’m guessing it’s because I’m on my feet constantly, and along with that I don’t eat there pretty much ever. I don’t know why I was so shocked that it’s helped so much. Even just being around the food made me feel like I was going backwards with my progress. I’m sure it’ll stop dropping so quickly soon, but in the meantime this has given me a huge confidence boost. Has anyone else had any experiences with this? I’d love to hear about it.

Fat Man begone

I have shared my story a million and five times. So I will give the breakdown. Four years ago I looked like this before

I was so disgusted with how far I let my self go. I tried so many different diets and routines but nothing worked. I was disappointed depressed and debated just giving up. This was until these influences...

  1. Obese to beast. His videos and motivation was the spring board to my journey.
  2. The Hodge Twins. These guys are fucking hilarious. Watch their advice and eating videos. Complete game changers.
  3. Eliot Hulse. Not everyone’s cup of tea but I found his words and thoughts to be eye opening. I appreciate everyone of his videos.

  4. And finally CT Fletcher. If I can say one thing to anyone on their journey. Watch this man!! Probably the most inspiring and essential aspect to my weight loss. God I was I could meet him and shake his hand

If I can say one thing to everyone who reads this. Please don’t give up. When the progress really hits it’s so worth it. Also don’t ever pass up an opportunity to help someone who is on their own weight loss journey.

A little graph I made from my weight loss/gain notebooks. This shows my weight from 17-30, with large swings up and down, mostly in relation to my addiction to drugs. Don't do drugs kids!

I actually started out college gaining a lot of weight in muscle. That little bump right there was mostly muscle. But then I got a knee injury, and the eating habits I gained for muscle training didn't go away, but the training itself did. I gained a ton of weight. I was drinking a lot, loosing friends, and I felt like I was loosing any and all semblance of my previous self. I went from a 'cool' kid in my first year of college to an asshole, out of control slob by my last year. It was the worst time in my life. I graduated, got a job at an office, and at that office there were guys who partied even harder than what I did in college. Specifically, cocaine. I started doing coke a lot, and got addicted basically right away. I dropped weight a ton. 22 years old, I dropped 150 pounds. I felt on top of the world from 22-23, even though I was a drug addict, I was earning money and finally had lost my weight. Unfortunately my coke addiction turned worse and worse and I just fell apart. I went from normal weight to 137 pounds. Ages 22-25... that was just a blur. I got fired from my job, but luckily got another one from my uncle which didn't pay as much but was easier. I was clubbing a lot (dancing burns a lot of calories...) and barely eating anything if I didn't have to. I would say I was burning maybe 500-1,000 dollars a week on cocaine. All of my extra money after rent and bills went to it.

At 25, my uncle found out about my cocaine addiction, and then everyone found out. I knew before then I had to go to rehab, but I never really truly wanted to go until my family forced me to realize I was a fucking mess. I went at 25, and almost right away, I began over eating. I did get clean from coke, I haven't touched it since. But holy shit, I remember right when I got clean, I started eating like a crazy person. I gained so much weight. I was happy I was clean, but the weight gain was... disconcerting. I would not have some magic drug addiction to come save me from this. I kept thinking that I was likely going to be fat for life, and that this was just how I was. Lots of people got fat in their late 20s, I was no exception, right?

Well I decided to turn myself around and start eating healthier. I joined a gym, although I'm not using it as much as I should, but the eating healthier has been enough. I am slowly but surely losing weight, I have gone from 280 to 208 in two years. I have literally never been happier in my life. My real trick is to just restrain myself to only eating at certain times. I eat from 9am-11am, as much as I want until I am full, then again from 6pm-8pm.
