Documenting my reasons for wanting to lose weight to try to keep myself motivated

I'm female, 23 years old, currently ~198 pounds. I started somewhere around 210 pounds, the heaviest I'd ever been. I first logged my weight at 205 on October 22. The last time I tried to lose weight was in 2017, when I started around 195 and got to 175 before falling off the bandwagon when my life kind of fell apart.

I've never been a healthy weight. I was a chubby toddler, reached a point of almost being healthy around age 8 after a growth spurt, but I've never had good habits. I hit my adult height at age 12, and I estimate I was about 140 pounds at that time. I've gone up and down since then, but I've gained ~5 pounds per year on average since then.

I'm tired of it. I've struggled with anxiety and depression (not weight-related, to my knowledge, but you never know) my entire life. I always feel better when I feel in control of aspects of my life, and I've never felt in control of my weight. I always expect to see progress immediately and fall off the bandwagon when I don't. This time I'm making a conscious effort to realize that I put this weight on over the course of more than a decade, I won't be able to take it off overnight.

To try to keep myself motivated, I want to list the reasons I want to lose the extra weight:

  • I want clothing to fit. I want to be able to fit into a large shirt instead of XL/XXL. I want the majority of dresses to be manufactured in my size and not have to look for the few made in size 18-20. I want jeans to stay up despite the fact that I have no hips.
  • I want to stop looking like an inverted triangle (broad shoulders, broad waist, narrow hips).
  • I want to be able to run without destroying my joints. I want to be able to have a conversation after climbing stairs without having to stop to catch my breath. I want to feel strong again and have muscle definition.
  • I want to comfortably fit into an airplane seat without feeling like I'm hogging the armrests!
  • I want to see if weight loss has a significant effect on my sleep apnea, blood pressure, anxiety, and terrible periods.
  • I want to stop hating having my photo taken.
  • I want to get my belly button pierced.
  • I want to lose the fat in my face so short haircuts are flattering on me.
  • I want to find bras that fit that don't cost a small fortune.
  • I don't want to have a heart attack at 30 or develop diabetes.
  • I want to feel confident enough to eventually start dating.
  • I want to be able to hike even a small mountain without feeling like I'm going to pass out.
  • I want to be able to chase my dogs around the yard.

In no particular order, of course. 😂

Day 1? Starting your weight loss journey on Saturday, 09 November 2019? Start here!

Today is your Day 1?

Welcome to r/Loseit!

So you aren’t sure of how to start? Don’t worry! “How do I get started?” is our most asked question. r/Loseit has helped our users lose over 1,000,000 recorded pounds and these are the steps that we’ve found most useful for getting started.

Why you’re overweight

Our bodies are amazing (yes, yours too!). In order to survive before supermarkets, we had to be able to store energy to get us through lean times, we store this energy as adipose fat tissue. If you put more energy into your body than it needs, it stores it, for (potential) later use. When you put in less than it needs, it uses the stored energy. The more energy you have stored, the more overweight you are. The trick is to get your body to use the stored energy, which can only be done if you give it less energy than it needs, consistently.

Before You Start

The very first step is calculating your calorie needs. You can do that HERE. This will give you an approximation of your calorie needs for the day. The next step is to figure how quickly you want to lose the fat. One pound of fat is equal to 3500 calories. So to lose 1 pound of fat per week you will need to consume 500 calories less than your TDEE (daily calorie needs from the link above). 750 calories less will result in 1.5 pounds and 1000 calories is an aggressive 2 pounds per week.

Tracking

Here is where it begins to resemble work. The most efficient way to lose the weight you desire is to track your calorie intake. This has gotten much simpler over the years and today it can be done right from your smartphone or computer. r/loseit recommends an app like MyFitnessPal, Loseit! (unaffiliated), or Cronometer. Create an account and be honest with it about your current stats, activities, and goals. This is your tracker and no one else needs to see it so don’t cheat the numbers. You’ll find large user created databases that make logging and tracking your food and drinks easy with just the tap of the screen or the push of a button. We also highly recommend the use of a digital kitchen scale for accuracy. Knowing how much of what you're eating is more important than what you're eating. Why? This may explain it.

Creating Your Deficit

How do you create a deficit? This is up to you. r/loseit has a few recommendations but ultimately that decision is yours. There is no perfect diet for everyone. There is a perfect diet for you and you can create it. You can eat less of exactly what you eat now. If you like pizza you can have pizza. Have 2 slices instead of 4. You can try lower calorie replacements for calorie dense foods. Some of the communities favorites are cauliflower rice, zucchini noodles, spaghetti squash in place of their more calorie rich cousins. If it appeals to you an entire dietary change like Keto, Paleo, Vegetarian.

The most important thing to remember is that this selection of foods works for you. Sustainability is the key to long term weight management success. If you hate what you’re eating you won’t stick to it.

Exercise

Is NOT mandatory. You can lose fat and create a deficit through diet alone. There is no requirement of exercise to lose weight.

It has it’s own benefits though. You will burn extra calories. Exercise is shown to be beneficial to mental health and creates an endorphin rush as well. It makes people feel awesome and has been linked to higher rates of long term success when physical activity is included in lifestyle changes.

Crawl, Walk, Run

It can seem like one needs to make a 180 degree course correction to find success. That isn’t necessarily true. Many of our users find that creating small initial changes that build a foundation allows them to progress forward in even, sustained, increments.

Acceptance

You will struggle. We have all struggled. This is natural. There is no tip or trick to get through this though. We encourage you to recognize why you are struggling and forgive yourself for whatever reason that may be. If you overindulged at your last meal that is ok. You can resolve to make the next meal better.

Do not let the pursuit of perfect get in the way of progress. We don’t need perfect. We just want better.

Additional resources

Now you’re ready to do this. Here are more details, that may help you refine your plan.

a battle with numbers [rant/storytime]

hi! i'm new here, and to reddit as a whole, but i needed a place to be able to speak about myself without (hopefully) no judgement. first of all, i'm a female at around 5'2-5'3ish and i'm currently 49.8kg down from 61kg. that must sound great, right? my body feels lighter, and clothes fit far looser. but i'm still not comfortable... you might be wondering why since my weight is perfect for my height, but i've been struggling. a lot.

you see, the way i lost it all was no where near what some of you may consider healthy. let's start from the beginning:

i've always been self-conscious about my appearance, and i only draw attention to myself whenever i try to be ”beautiful.” to someone on the outside, i was perfectly comfortable in my own skin. however, my eating habits sucked a**. when i was a kid, my uncle treated me whenever i craved anything. i wanted ice cream? done! i wanted pizza? sure! what toppings? i was understandably chubby due to this, and it followed me all the way to junior high. (by the way, i'm almost in first year of hs.)

i weighed 61kg when i weighed myself after coming down with a cold at the doctor's office, and mother said it "wasn't bad". at that time, i had club right after school and would have to take the bus from the mall. being the unhealthy eater i was, i bought a large can of pringles, a chocolate bar, non-diet soda, not to mention boba tea too (with tapioca, full sugar). it was almost unbelievable how i wasn't obese, instead i was on the very edge of "healthy"— almost overweight.

fast forward to the end of eighth grade: i performed at the talent show. it was great, i danced and had fun! but then my dance team decided to take a photo after the show.

everyone was slim: while my thighs bulged out of my jeans.

this was the start of the end. i began to think about weight loss. i started by eating better food:

avacado toast with a sunny side up egg.. oatmeal with bananas and almond milk.. whole wheat tortilla wraps with lettuce, tomatoes, etc.

but it wasn't enough. perhaps it was because i had no scale at the time, as my family scale was inaccurate and could not be trusted. i felt like results didn't come fast enough. i wanted something quick, even if i'm the back of my head knew that losing weight took so much time.

suddenly, an idea sprouted up in my head: what if i ate as little as possible?

and it worked! i lost 6kg in a month, and went from 61kg to 55kg! i was super excited, restricting myself only to 700-800calories per day. i had school, dance and clubs— so i got my exercise there. weeks passed, and my weight became stagnant. the 0.4kg i was losing became 0.2kg, and i felt bad. i wanted to be the super slim korean idols that appeared on television, going as far as to follow a few of the most extreme starvation diets.

without much thought, those 800calories became 500, then those 500 became 300, and finally: 200. i felt guilt and shame for going over that three digit number. it was all i thought about: stay. under. that. i would cry knowing that my family wanted to eat out, chewing and spitting out my food into a napkin and pretending to eat.

with that, i've quickly fallen down to 49.8kgs on november 8th 2019.

and i feel like crap.

there are SO. MANY. TIMES i've told myself to increase my limit— "i'll eat 300 today!" or "today will be a refeed day!" but i'll push it back more and more every time i arrive on said day. the numbers scared me. i was afraid of gaining even 0.1lbs. i want to eat so bad. i want to enjoy my life, i don't want to constantly think about food anymore.

does anyone have any tips to slowly increase my limit without gaining? or weight maintenance advice for someone like me?

i'm in desperate need to stop these thoughts, and frankly... i just want to be happy and eat healthily.

Nov 2009 my friend asked me (20 F,160 lbs, sedentary) to go for a run. Here is a story of a decade of Fitness.

Hello everyone! 10 years ago this month, my friend asked me to go for a run. Little did I know that my decision to say yes would completely change the way I lived my life for the next decade. I would like to share my story of how I went to a practically 100% sedentary lifestyle to my fitness-fueled life of today.

The beginning – Nov 2009

It all started when my friend Phil asked me to go for a run. Even though I was a complete slug back then who did exactly 0 exercise, something came over me and I said “yes”. When we got to the track, I knew I was out of shape, but I figured I could at the VERY least a half mile before stopping. I vividly remember after about 100 meters of just a jogging pace, every muscle in my body was screaming. As I continued to try and run I thought “Splashattack….you are 20 years old and you can’t even run 100 meters? What are you going to be like in 10, 20, 50 years from now?” It was that moment that I decided I needed to change my lifestyle.

Before Arm Pic Fall 2009

Initial weight loss: Nov 2009 – Nov 2010 (160ish o 125 Lbs) Running fiend

After that run I was dedicated to losing weight. When I finally bought a scale it read 161 pounds. My goal was to get to around a weight of 130 pounds. To start, I downloaded Lose It and started tracking my calories every day. I also started running…well more like walking. When I started, I could only run for like 30 seconds, then I would have to walk. At first I started going for these ‘runs’ 2 or 3 times a week. By April 2010 I hit my goal of 130 Lbs and I was running 3-5 miles 7 days a week.

2011 – 2015: General Maintenance (128 – 133ish Lbs) (Little muscle)

Because I hit my goal of 130 pounds and I wasn’t seeing any more progress, I slowly stopped running. Up until then, I religiously logged my calories on Lose It EVERY SINGLE DAY since Nov 2009. I felt at this time that I could pretty much guesstimate calories, so I stopped using the app. By mid-2012 I stopped running completely but I managed to stay around 130ish pounds. The highest I think the scale ever got was around 133 but with no exercise I was practically a noodle muscle wise.

2016: Weightlifting (122 lbs) (Building Muscle)

At the start of 2016 I was tired of not doing anything physically, but I really didn’t want to start running again. I got a gym membership and started weightlifting. At first I had no idea what I was doing, but after much research I learned how to use the free weights. I also re-downloaded lose it and ate around 1400 calories a day. I once again became obsessed with fitness, with a new goal of minimizing my body fat while simultaneously increasing my muscle mass. By June 2016 I was the lowest weight I’ve been at 122 pounds and had considerably more muscle mass then when I ran. I was content with my progress but I wanted to be more muscular. Unfortunately, in the Fall I threw out my back lifting and I haven’t been able to get back into it since.

2017: Rock Climbing (130 lbs) Arm gainzzzz

Fall 2017 my wife got a Groupon to a climbing gym near us. At this time, I practically gave up on weightlifting due to back problems but I was still managing to go the gym a couple times here and there. After our first climbing session we were both hooked. We immediately signed up for a membership and climbed 3-5 days a week until I got a pretty serious overuse injury in my hand Jan 2018 which put me out of climbing till around April. From April onwards we reduced our climbing to around 2 times a week.

2018 – Present: Mountain Biking (125 lbs) Leg Gainzzzz

Sept 2018 I started a new job that was 3 miles away. I figured since I was so close to work I could commute by bike. After testing out some bikes, I settled on an e-mountain bike so I could use it both to ride to work and try out some trails. I started on some pretty easy trails and I was (once again) was hooked. I started mountain biking 2 – 3 times a week. I eventually progressed to a normal mountain bike and this past summer I got a season pass to a downhill mountain bike park. Downhill MTB is by far my favorite physical activity I’ve ever done, and I can’t wait until the park opens again next season.

Mountain Biking

Conclusion

So there you have it, a story of how from 2009 to 2019 I went from a lazy 20 year old potato who couldn’t even run 100 meters without stopping to a 30 year old rock climbing/down-hill mountain biking fiend. I went from 160+ pounds to 130 and throughout the decade I fluctuated between 122 – 132 pounds. The reason I am sharing this story is to show you guys that weight loss and fitness isn’t just something you do for a month or two, it is a whole lifestyle. A lot of people hit their weight loss goals and then unfortunately relapse back into their old lifestyle. There is no ‘end’ to fitness. Also, if you find yourself unmotivated TRY NEW THINGS! In the past decade I went from running, to weight lifting, to rock climbing, to mountain biking. Trying a new sport keeps it fresh for me.

tl;dr 20 year old lazy potato in 2009 goes from 160 to 125 pounds and maintains for 10 years by trying new activities. Went from running, to lifting, to rocking climbing, to mountain biking. My weight loss journey didn’t end when I hit my goal, it only just began. If you have any questions about how I managed to maintain my weight throughout these years just ask!

Some fun quotes from my parents [rant]

I need to vent. You guys, I'm struggling. I'm in therapy for binge-eating disorder but it's proving to be a hard road. My parents, especially my mom, are thin and proud of it, so the second I gained boobs and a butt around age 12/13, I was under scrutiny. I had a relatively normal weight until 21 (135lbs at 5'4", hourglass figure) then I spiralled. I just wanted to post some memorable quotes from my parents as a way to get it off my chest. Here are just a few off the top off my head. Coincidentally, I'm not at all surprised I'm struggling with weight loss... some venomous part of me doesn't want to give my parents the satisfaction of conforming to their ideals... Not looking for advice, just ranting!

"Are you NOT eating right now because you're afraid I'll say something about it?" (Continues to eye me throughout dinner)

"Honey, I'm not sure you noticed, but you need to do something. No company would hire you looking like that."

"Don't be mad for pointing out your weight. I'm just looking out for you. It's like if I had a stain on my shirt, I'd want someone to tell me."

"Look, I worry you'll be unappealing to men. You just look very unpalatable."

"Hmm.... you don't look as fat from this angle."

"I'm under 110lbs!" (Mom said proudly after getting nearly skeletal during cancer treatment)

"We must've gained weight. How should we punish ourselves?" (After having a 'guilt-free' apple pie after lunch)

Back on the weight loss journey with a vengeance and back on this subreddit to share it

So I was on here a while back and posted a couple of pictures. I’d made some progress but somewhere along the line, how it inevitably does, the wheels came off and I gained some of the weight I’d lost back. It was hard to accept it but I did.

Now I’ve changed everything.

Not only am I taking time to be aware of what I eat, I’m now a member of a gym. I’ve been going three times a week for almost a month and I love it. On my days off from the gym I’m Spinning once a week and doing aqua aerobics once a week, leaving two days of rest.

I’ve never been so active in all my life - with this fitness routine being on top of a somewhat physical job - and though my weight has increased slightly I’m not allowing it to put me off.

I’m enjoying everything I do and I know it takes time to get results, and I’m willing to wait and start seeing the changes that occur
